Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
I LOVE medical thrillers! I enjoyed the intense moments, the fast-paced suspense, and Leslie Wolfe's writing style. This is the first book I've read of hers. I thought the characters were really well-developed and Leslie did her research to describe those heart-pounding scenes in the OR with precise cardiothoracic terminology. Leslie Wolfe's THE SURGEON is one you won't be able to put down--add it to your TBR NOW!!
Being a doctor myself I'm always drawn to books about anything medical. Anne, a surgeon, loses her first patient in the operating room; a patient that she recognizes. Who is he and should she have tried harder to save him? We are also introduced to state attorney Paula and Derreck, Anne’s husband, who play a large role in this story. Although I didn’t particularly like the characters I did find that they were well fleshed out and I could understand some of their actions. I enjoyed this cat and mouse thriller and particularly like medical based books. This one seemed very well researched. What I really enjoyed was how it all came together with lots of little twists on the way. It took while for the story to get going but once it did I glided across the pages easily. I will be checking out the authors other books after this.
Thank you to Bookouture & NetGalley for allowing me to listen to this book
Twists and turns that will leave you feeling whiplash! This was a fantastic thriller that you need to read as soon as you can!
The Surgeon by Leslie Wolfe delivered a suspenseful and twisted thriller. It tells the story of a surgeon and the Assistant State Attorney determined to take her down. Revenge, jealousy and blind ambition drive the plot of this exciting tale.
The Surgeon introduces, cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Ann Wiley. Despite it occurring years ago, she still has yet to come to terms with the loss of her sister. Caught up in her career and the grief from the loss of her sister, she fails to notice the raising of the many red flags relating to her cheating husband. Derreck is a successful lawyer and seeks to become the next Mayor.
Now it so happens the woman Derreck cheated on Ann with is the same woman who is determined to bring her down, Assistant State Attorney Paula Fuselier. She waits patiently in the wings for the perfect opportunity. An opportunity which came when Anne lost her first patient in the middle of a surgical procedure.
Now Anne has no clue as to the reason the Assistant State Attorney was gunning for her. Also, she’s unaware of Derreck’s relationship with the woman. Her main concern, avoid prosecution and possible jail time.
While reading, the question at the forefront of my mind was, what was Paula’s real reason for the blatant hatred of Anne? I figure it had to be more than jealousy. The further I went into the story, the more it proved my theory. Revenge played a major role in her plan to destroy Anne.
Honestly, I couldn’t stand the characters. Anne, although a successful surgeon, behaved like someone without sense. For someone trying to avoid prosecution, she did some questionable things throughout the story. Also, her constant whining didn’t help. From the beginning, one recognized Paula’s viciousness. I had no trouble disliking her and discovering the reasons for her actions did little to change my mind about her. Don’t get me started with Derreck. Selfish doesn’t even begin to describe him. Everything he did was to save his own skin.
Leslie Wolfe created an intriguing story which contained a few twists and some surprising revelations that increased the level of the story’s enjoyment. This is the first book I have read by the author, and I look forward to reading more of her work.
I also listened to this audio. Book which I think I enjoyed more as thr natrarion was so good but my review of the story remains the same , although had a slow start once the story got going and I felt invested in the story I couldn’t put it down! It was full of twist and kept surprising me constantly with the way the story unfolded,
From start to finish this book had me hooked. Plenty of twists throughout I enjoyed this a lot and could not put it down!
I really liked the premise for this book, and loved the medical elements! You can tell the author did a lot of research in this area, and it was applied really well.
Interesting twists along the way, though a little slow to get moving initially.
The one place I think it could be improved was the ending, I was left wanting a little bit more of a twist ending, though I am liking it more with a bit of space between myself and the book.
This was an interesting one!
This book came out a few days ago. I received it from Bookouture via Netgalley.
We follow Dr Anne Wiley, a cardiothoracic surgeon who just lost her first patient on the operating table. A patient she happens to know. And we follow Paula Fuselier of the State's Attorney Office who is determined to bring Wiley down, but why exactly?
The story itself is quite interesting and thrilling. That makes for an easy and fun read. Some characters were a bit over the top. Anne, for instance is constantly anxious about being arrested and this is repeated quite a lot. Also, the reason Paula goes after Anne is quite obvious, but with a twist at the end I did not see coming. It's a very decent thriller with a main focus on jealousy.
3,75/5 ⭐
The Surgeon focuses on two main characters. Dr Anne Wiley a cardiothoracic surgeon who has her first-ever patient die on the operating table and the second is Assistant State Attorney Paula Fuselier who will do anything to get to where she wants to go. Someone who is not to be crossed! Paula starts sniffing around Anne once she gets wind of this patient who has died on the table. You can't help but feel for Anne whose anxiety is sky-high and has to start looking deeper into what the hell happened to save herself.
It's a slower read to start but it builds tension like a spring! Towards the second half of the book, it really gives you a thrill and you will be screaming at the pages!! It's full of lies, twists and secrets. How will it end? You will have to read it for yourself!
The writing style in this book is something I could not get past. I hope it was a misprint but when the protagonist refers to her teeth "clattering" instead of chattering, as a nerdy wordsmith it really bothered me. I had this terrifying image of those wind up teeth from the 80s jumping from her mouth and "clattering" across the floor. The author also uses a lot of metaphors, which they then explain are physically impossible, such as "my blood turned to ice." Reminded me too much of a boss I used to have who took everything literally and had no sense of humor.
What a pleasure was to read this book, Leslie Wolfe never disappoints me with her stories! The Surgeon is fast-paced and full of action read that kept me guessing who wanted what and which were the motives and the ending was brilliant!!! What seemed to be a perfect life turns out to be an ugly caricature with very bad consequences for all those involved in its design. Problems from the past landing and shattering present lives!
I thank Ms. Wolfe, her publisher, and NetGalley for the copy of this book.
There are already lots of helpful reviews out there, so I'll just recommend this for medical thriller fans.
I really appreciate the free review copy for review!!
The Surgeon is a medical crime fiction book and my first by this author. Not usually what I'd read. I couldn't get my head around the fact that a cardiothoracic surgeon had never lost a patient. To then suddenly lose someone she recognises, seemed odd! No wonder the state attorney got involved.
I could tell that Leslie researched thoroughly during the telling of the story - her use of the medical terminology was great. Apart from my initial thoughts of a cardiothoracic surgeon not having lost a patient before, I found the story intriguing and compelling. Enjoyed it!
Is she a murderer?
Dr Anne Wiley is performing a routine surgery one morning as per the last 12 years of her career and she’s never lost a patient - stats other Doctors could only dream about. Something goes wrong during the surgery after she sees the face of the man on her table. But who is he? Why didn’t she spend the 43 minute average trying to resuscitate him? These questions are on Dr Wiley’s mind as an ASA, Paula, starts to hound her for answers. But why is Paula so interested in the case?
The Surgeon is a book that can be read in one sitting, with the fast paced storyline and a shocking ending you won’t be expecting. I really loved getting to know the characters, hating Paula, and wondering why she was out to get Anne despite this being the first death in her lengthy career.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and Leslie Wolfe for letting me read this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Hooked! Suspenseful! A twist-filled medical psychological thriller that kept me at the edge of pondering till the end. Until Caleb Donaghy's unbelievable death on the table, the thirty-nine- year old Surgeon Dr. Anne Wiley never lost a patient since she finished her general surgery residency right after she moved to the cardiothoracic surgery department of Joseph Lister University Hospital in Chicago. Life in a hospital and surgeries of this type come with a risk. But she recognized Caleb who died under the scalpel she was holding near his heart during surgery which made her tremble and gave weakness in her muscles. Anne had no regrets or no remorse, Donaghy was a monster who deserved to die. Why? Who was Caleb to Dr. Anne?
Why is a prosecutor after Dr. Anne.? The plotline gets twisted when Paula Fuselier from the State's Attorney's Office raises suspicion and questions about Anne's patient Mr. Caleb Donaghy's death. I as a reader resented the character Paula as she was full of envy, frustration, anger, and lusting after Dr. Anne's husband Mayor Derreck for power and wealth. Dr. Anne is looking for answers as she called herself -A killer.
Leslie Wolfe told the story without giving away the suspense and twists in the storyline which kept me engrossed and curious. Thanks to Leslie Wolfe, NetGalley, and Bookouture Publishers for an advance copy for my honest review.

Love that the book was fast-paced and easy to read. It's a good thriller but I think the plot could have been more interesting, I wanted i bigger plot twist. I guessed before the end. It was quite challenging for me to read a book written in 1st AND 3rd person. First time seeing this and I don't know if I like it😨 No diverse characters 😓 I've also found that the main character was a bit boring and repetitive with her thoughts. It was my first time reading a hospital thriller, I love it, and will read more of course(Grey's Anatomy fan here!!) Thank you for the arc of this book! 3,75 stars
Jealousy sure is a B*tch!!
This book was just ok for me. It had suspense and I didn’t guess the twist at the end but still just lacked something for me.
Dr. Anne Wiley is a cardiothoracic surgeon who lost a patient, on the operating table. She has never lost a patient on the table until now. Did Anne call death too early? Why is the state attorney investigating?
This is a well researched, fast paced medical thriller with well drawn characters and a distinctive plot. It is a story of secrets and lies and revenge.
Highly recommend!
‘Trusted surgeon. Loving wife. Murderer?’ - cover tag line.
My thanks to Bookouture for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘The Surgeon’ by Leslie Wolfe.
This medical/crime thriller proved a highly engaging read. Like most crime and psychological thrillers, I read it ‘cold’ in order to avoid spoilers. So just a brief overview.
Chicago-based Anne Whiley is a cardiothoracic surgeon who in her twelve year career has not lost a patient. Until today. As she calls time of death we are made aware that although she hadn’t recognised her patient during the pre-operative consults, when she looks behind the drape she realises that he is someone that she hates. Had this led to his death?
As Anne wrestles with her conscience and looks into possible medical reasons for the death, she is shocked to learn that Paula Fuselier of the State’s Attorney Office is investigating the death. Her world is threatening to come crashing down, ruining both her career and marriage.
While I enjoyed this novel I did find it rather strained credibility that given the serious nature of cardiothoracic surgery that this was the first time that Anne had experienced losing a patient. In addition, her constant anxiety that she was about to be arrested for murder seemed like a catastrophic expectation given the circumstances. I could imagine a good defence attorney demolishing the case especially given Paula’s toxic behaviour.
Still, I set aside these quibbles as it really was a gripping thriller with plenty of twists and turns. It was the kind of book that I found almost impossible to put down.
Overall, while this was the first novel I have read by Leslie Wolfe, I certainly am interested in reading more of her works.
First, I want to thank Leslie Wolfe, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.
YES!! YES!! YES!! OH Leslie Wolfe you have satisfied my craving for a good twisted Medical Thriller!! The Surgeon is everything I was hoping it would be and more! I just loved it and couldn’t get enough of it. If you love Medical Thrillers as much as I do you must put this on the top of your TBR pile!
The graphic artists that created this book cover are pure geniuses! Between the title and the cover I was hooked and needed to know more! Great job!
Leslie hooked me instantly by giving us an in-depth and extremely close look of her day leading up to the surgery of Caleb. Leslie did a fantastic job with her detailed descriptions of Caleb's looks and features.
Having an education in Medical Assisting, Medical Office Assisting, working in the field and being a patient I have picked up some medical terminology knowledge along the way. Therefore, I was able to comprehend Caleb’s medical history, medical procedures, etc. That aspect interested me.
Leslie does a phenomenal job bringing all the purely raw emotions out within Anna! I felt her empathy at times and her fear during other times in the story.
The Surgeon made me question if the storyline twist ever happened in reality and if so how was it taken care of? It was just mind blowing and so twisted!!
Leslie did a brilliant job researching with the help of Dr. Deborah Joule on the intricacies of cardiovascular surgery.
