A heart surgeon who has never lost a patient recognizes the man on her operating table to be a nightmare from her past mid-surgery...and then he dies. A ruthless assistant state's attorney is onto the death immediately, but how did she find out? It's hard to say too much without being spoiler-y. Anne's anxiety gets a little tedious as things progress and the way she deals with the pain of the past seems a little left field. While the climax was tense and revealing, the ending felt a tad abrupt and unsatisfying. The supporting cast of characters is solid and overall I enjoyed The Surgeon.

This book gave me anxiety in the best way! I was hooked and not able to put it down. I needed to know what would happen next.

The Surgeon is a well-paced book with one of the most devious and diabolical characters I've encountered in a thriller. Here are the things I enjoyed:

-The setting: Chicago is a great city, and this book takes place there and leans into it with the various mentions of the landmarks.

-The occupations of the main characters. I know nothing about the medical field, but I liked the drama of the hospital. Is it realistic? No clue!

-One other character is unredeemable, and I hated her, but she was someone I loved to hate.

Thanks for the advance review copy.

What an intriguing medical thriller!
Main character, Anne Wiley, has it all…..successful career as a cardiac surgeon, a wonderful husband. Her life is going great. Until it isn’t.
Definitely an edge of the seat, heart stopping read!
The medial and legal information throughout the story is very in depth.
If you like reading medical thriller with a legal aspect, this is a book you should pick up.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Anne Wiley is a trusted and successful surgeon, known for her streak of never losing a patient. Until the very first chapter, Dr. Wiley never had a patient pass away under her care during surgery. She is performing a routine procedure when the heart would not restart, as she glanced to the patient behind the drape she paled after recognizing him. How? Well, that is not fully disclosed... you get bits and pieces throughout the entire book.
Meanwhile, the narrative switches between Anne and Paula Fuselier, an attorney climbing the ladder. Clearly the two are connected, the reader assumes Paula will be assigned to investigate the death of Anne's patient. Easy, right? There is so much more to the history and story line than a simple investigation from the state's attorney office. Ironically, it was the Cook County State's Attorney's office (shoutout to Chi town), which was weird to read and see!

I really appreciated the two narratives between Anne and Paula. It allowed you uncovered things from both sides with anticipation of connecting all of the dots. It wasn't like most split narratives where you favored one over the other. Anne has a motive, and nothing will stop her. Meanwhile, Anne is an "innocent" bystander who has her over secrets...
This book was giving Freida McFadden vibes from the start. Which I LOVED. Very similar writing styles and I highly recommend this book!

This was an excellent read with lots of unexpected twists and turns. This is a new author to me so I will look out for her other books.

I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review-
This book was great! I could not quit reading——
She was a surgeon who had never lost a patient —— till today. Did she do something wrong? Did she call the time of death too soon? Is it because she saw who the patient was? Someone is determined to see her loose her job and more- why? This book was mind blowing!

I could not put this book down. It was excellent from start to finish. I am always eager to read medical thrillers so this was right up my alley. Scandal, plot twists, this book had everything. I felt as though it was well written from the medical side of things (I work in healthcare.) I can't wait to read more from this author.

Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the advance read of The Surgeon. This was good. It was not great but it was good. The book started off a bit choppy for me. It was a bit hard to get into but once I got into more details of where the story was going, it got a lot more interesting and easier to read. The two sides of criminal prosecution and surgical failure. It was a sight to see in this book. This book shone a light on what goes on in this world. I do not want to say to much. I suggest having a read.

Excellent read and impossible to put down. I pretty much read this in one sitting... a long span but, oh, so enjoyable and twisty. Loved the depth of the characters and their motivations. Highly recommend this read.

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for an advanced copy.

I usually don't love medical thrillers but I am soooo glad I gave this one a chance! It was so good. Cannot recommend it enough!

I love Leslie Wolf’s ability to craft such an unlikeable character! I’m always amazed by how much agency they exhibit in earning my attention. One of the characters in this story engineers her own conflict, causing her to be magnetic in my eyes. I loved watching her ruin her own life and, for me, it was the anticipation of what she was going to do next that propelled the plot forward…not necessarily the character many thought was driving the action. Sorry for the vague review…this is such a powerful and well-written book and I don’t want to give anything away for you.

I also love Wolfe’s plot twists. She’s a master of them. It’s not her actual twists that are mind bending, although they certainly are, but rather the set-up. When I finish one of her books I always find myself quietly pondering the big reveal and going back over the plot in my mind to think of clues I may have missed. I always give 5 stars to an author who can trip me up and mess with my perception of characters and actions. In this book, Wolfe gets all the stars for getting me MORE THAN ONCE!

Like a renowned surgeon, Wolfe has a tight grasp on her skills, making her an auto-read author. Her skills are well-honed and so perfectly utilized that readers won’t see the twists coming nor have time to ‘hate’ a character simply because they don’t like the personality or actions! An author who has the ability to create an unlikeable character and have me cheer them on, is most certainly gifted. You need to read this one to experience a master craftsperson at work. This is a novel I’ve already been telling everyone about - heaven help the next person who asks if I’ve read any good books lately! I could go on and on and on about what I loved about this book.

I was gifted this by Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review

**4.5 stars.
The Surgeon is a medical thriller about Dr Anne Wiley and her immaculate surgery survival rates. She’s ends up losing a patient but was it a natural death or intentional? Who was this patient and why is the assistant state attorney suddenly so interested in this death?
I’m not sure if I loved this book so much because I was a cardiac nurse for 8 years. It was fun reading a medical story but this was a great book. I could NOT read it fast enough and it only took me an afternoon to finish it. This is my first book by Leslie Wolfe but it will not be my last.
I would have easily given this 5 stars but the ending was a little too happy and forgiving for me. However, the book had just the perfect amount of suspense, adultery, and mystery.
Thank you to Netgalley for this advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review. The Surgeon will be published on March 8 2023. Definitely get yourself a copy.

The lives of two women, Anne and Paula, are told separately at the beginning of the book, and then their lives intersect in a way that I never saw coming!

Anne is performing a routine heart surgery when she starts losing her patient. She performs every life-saving technique that she's trained to do until she looks at her patient's clean-shaven face and realizes that she knows him...and she doesn't want to save him.

Paula, the brash, ambitious Assistant State Attorney who is investigating the death of Anne’s patient has her own agenda. Why exactly is she investigating Anne? What does she suspect?

This was my first read from this author, and I thoroughly enjoyed the medical terminology and how easily she shifted points of view between two totally different women who both share one common factor...the desire to protect someone they love. The sense of paranoia and heightened unease that permeated this book was so well executed. I thank NetGalley and Bookouture for the early read. THE SURGEON will publish March 8, 2023.

A scandalous medical thriller that will blow your mind. Anne, a highly regarded heart surgeon, loses a patient during surgery. This death puts Anne under severe scrutiny by her hospital and by the state's attorney Paula, who will stop at nothing to get dirt on Anne. Could Anne have saved the patient or was she a murderer? What a tangled juicy web the author weaves of lies and deception. Everyone involved is hiding something, but how far will they all go to get to the truth? Paula was a character I detested. She was the evilest of villains out to do anything that will advance her career at the expense of everyone around her. That is what made this book so riveting. I needed to know how this web of lies untangled and who would ultimately pay the price. The twists were surprising, and the plot was intense.

I have been one fortunate little cookie when it has come to my February book approvals.

I’m in healthcare and I actually LOVE my job so when I see anything related to healthcare in a synopsis I instantly NEED to read it .

The Surgeon

This is a book you read with the lights on.

Now, how do I sum up a book that I not only read once but twice since I received a copy . The first time I read this book I couldn’t read it fast enough. I had to know what was happening and I could not absorb it fast enough. The second time I read it was to enjoy all of the details and twists I thought I might have missed.

Do you think I loved it? Absolutely!

This was my first book by Leslie Wolfe, but I hope it’s not my last! The talent emulates on each page . I devoured every last word .

Curious why I loved it so much ? You are going to have to pre order yourself a copy! This sure to be best seller releases on March 8, 2023

Trusted surgeon. Loving wife. Murderer?

Before my world came crashing down, I had it all. The successful career I dreamed of. The beautiful red-brick home where I could relax in front of the fire. The handsome, devoted husband whose blue eyes and charming smile always made me feel safe.

As I call time of death, my voice is steady. My colleagues stand hushed around me, their eyes on me, confused, concerned.

I have never lost a patient until today.

My hands tremble inside their gloves. I slide down the cold tiled walls, my heart racing in my chest.

I have never hated a patient until today.

But what choice did I have, once I recognized him?

And what will I do to protect myself, if someone learns the truth?

I cant blame Anne if she want to take revenge, do justice, sadly she is a good egg, honest people who cant endure the guilt. Then her husband Derreck, what a piece of s*** narcissist, who can statisfy with powerfull career, wonderful wife, supported family, still looking and playing outside. Paula oh my god..her revenge scheme was so good, too bad she has misunderstanding and face with a narcissist liar. I really enjoy the family drama, hospital drama, politic drama and plot twist its give me the thrill.

Thank you to NetGalley for provide this book, it is pleasure to review this book.

This story follows a cardiac surgeon who seems to have it all. A great life, a husband who is an attorney and a successful career until, she loses her first patient in surgery! Her career and her life begin to unravel. This shocking story with many twists, leaves the reader wanting to finish. I enjoyed this book! 4 star read !!! Pick it up for heartstopping suspense! Thank you to Netgalley, bookotoure and the author for providing an opportunity to read an arc of this book in exchange for my honest review!

Dr. Anne is a dedicated surgeon. Never once her patients died on the operating table. But when one of her patients dies, Dr. Anne wasn't confused and shocked as her colleagues. Once when Dr. Anne recognized who the patient was, she wanted to kill him. Meanwhile, Paula, a state attorney who is having an affair with Dr. Anne's husband is determined to bring Dr. Anne down, pinning her to the death of that patient.

This was a fast-paced medical thriller, switching between Anne and Paula. You might wonder why Paula is hell bent in destroying Anne for just a mere affair with her husband--for jealousy or for something else in her agenda? Honestly, Paula is one of those characters that I literally couldn't stand at all (you know you have those moments when you hate a particular character so much and I felt like that way with Paula). This was unputdownable, there were a bit of twists and turns, the ending was also unexpected. I have read Leslie's books before, the Detective Kay Sharp series and so I enjoyed reading this standalone novel written by her. I really hope that she would write more standalone in future as well!

Overall, this is a page turner which worth 4 stars!

Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.

The story follows a surgeon named Anne who has an impeccable record. That all changes when she loses her first patient, someone that she recognises. Paula, Assistant State Attorney who is investigating the death of Anne’s patient has her own agenda. The questions of who the patient is and if Anne could have prevented his death are ones that follow us throughout the book.

The Surgeon was a fun read. Thrillers are one of my most favourite genres, especially psychological ones and this one delivered a great story leaving me wanting more.

It did take me a while to get into this book but once I did, I didn’t want to put it down. It’s fast paced and tied all together at the end perfectly. I’m interested to read more from this author.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me this arc!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
