Great thriller! I really enjoyed this book! This was my first Leslie Wolf book but definitely not my last. I had to read this in one sitting just couldn’t put it down. There was so much tension and twists.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book
I was so excited to read a doctor-themed thriller and this was a good one. I would’ve loved to see the plot wrap up a little cleaner but definitely worth the read.
Wow! Really loved this book! My first Leslie Wolf book but definitely not my last. Fresh concept with great characters! This one kept me up way past my bedtime. Lots of tension and twists. Nicely placed reveals kept me totally invested.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book
Anne Wiley is a gifted and talented heart surgeon. She's never lost a patient on her operating table before. Then one day her first patient dies. Pulling back the drapes she realises that her patient is a man she's hated for years. They have a past. Although she's done nothing wrong Anne cant get it out her head that she is in someway to blame to the patients death.
Things take a turn for the worst when the states Attorneys office and in particular one particular lawyer starts looking into the case. What are the motives at play and how is everything connected.
This is a great fast paced read. I loved the way the characters in the story developed.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to see an ARC
This is a new discovery of an author for me but this book did not disappoint. I was swept away with this book and couldn’t put it down. I ended up loosing loads of sleep last night as I had to finish this book before I closed my eyes. After a heart surgeon looses her first patient on the operating table her life spirals out of control as she questions what went wrong and we discover she also recognises the patient. Even though she did nothing wrong and is cleared by the hospital the new state attorney is determined to make her pay and charge her with murder but does she have an ulterior motive? As she starts to question her own actions it’s a fight to save her career and everything she holds dear. This book is a fast paced and exciting read with a great edge of your seat ending.
The Surgeon is an exciting medical thriller that starts off quickly and keeps you turning the pages to see what will develop next. I enjoyed the different POVs for each chapter, and the writing style was easy to follow and fast-paced. The medical information incorporated into the story makes the reader feel like they are standing side by side in the OR with the very likable protagonist, Anne Wiley. While there is a political aspect that is important to the story, there is not so much detail to potentially bore the reader and the author does not express political beliefs through the characters, which I found appealing. Overall, it is a highly enjoyable and exciting thriller. I received a copy of The Surgeon from Bookouture via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Wow what a book thank you ever so much for the opportunity to review. I could not put it down. Would definitely recommend to others! From the very first page of this book, I was stunned, mesmerised. Written with a ferocious manner that'll knock the wind out of you! I’m a fan of medical thrillers so this was right up my street!
Heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Definitely one of the best books this year.
I enjoyed this book. I love psychological thrillers. It’s not a fast paced book, but it kept my interest throughout the story. I couldn’t put it down. I had to know what was going to happen next. The plot twists weren’t too surprising. But I wasn’t expecting all of it. You can tell the author did a lot of research. I think she did pretty well. There were a lot of medical terms. This is my first book by this author. I’ll definitely be checking out her other books.
Thanks Netgalley for my ARC!
Anne Wiley is a cardiac surgeon who has not lost a patient in the 12 years she has been practicing.
She operated on a patient who had a heart aneurysm, and the heart did not start beating when the aneurysm was repaired. Fifteen minutes is spent trying to get his heart to respond when Anne looks at his face for the first time, and recognizes him, and then declares him deceased, much to the disgust of the Anesthesiologist.
Paula, an ambitious Assistant State Attorney. She has an agenda and will stop at nothing to get revenge.
A riveting read! Tremendous twists and so well written.
I am thinking that there will be a sequel to this book, I hope that I am not wrong. I can think of quite a few plots for a sequel!!
I did not like Paula, and I did not like Anne's husband, both characters were after what they could get, with no thought to anyone else.
Anne is another story, comes across as a kind and caring person, but is actually too good to be true.
But all in all, a fantastic read. I look forward to seeing the follow on if there is one.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Dr Anne Wiley is a cardiothoracic surgeon with a spotless record, until her first patient dies while being operated on. Moments before, Anne recognised him. Did she let him die?
This is the basic premise of The Surgeon but the plot goes so much deeper.
At first, I found myself frustrated with the main character. However, the pieces fell into place as the story progressed and I found myself soon gripped by the plot.
The Surgeon is an enjoyable read with a few "killer" twists thrown in for good measure.
With special thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy in return for an honest review.
Very well researched book, full of details and cannot fault the authors precision
A fascinating story that although took me a while to settle into once I did I enjoyed and found the twists and found very interesting
Overall a good read
Gifted heart surgeon loses her first patient. The story starts fast and keeps going. In addition to all of the medical research evident in the story, politics at many levels become an additional aspect used to demonstrate the author’s writing “chops” A variety of characters interact, plot, and scheme throughout the pages keeping the story going in and out of the hospital..
“The Surgeon” is a thriller by Leslie Wolfe. I really liked how the author grabbed (commanded?) the reader’s attention with the opening chapter - Dr Anne Wiley is a gifted heart surgeon who had never lost a patient on the operating table … then she does. The reader learns about the fallout Dr Wiley has - from being investigated by the hospital (standard procedure) to dealing with her feelings (and flashbacks) about the death. Throw in Dr Wiley’s husband running for mayor … and an over eager state attorney - and things get rather heated. I really liked Ms. Wolfe’s research into the medical terminology (I didn’t know that heart vegetation existed) and heart surgeries. I also appreciated the legal and hospital procedures too. It took me a while to get into this book, I must admit. I did find the willingness toward forgiveness a lot to take toward the end of the book, though I understand it (I just didn’t like how it was played out). For what it’s worth, I didn’t connect the dots regarding what happened on the table - and I’m not quite sure how I feel about it - though (again) it did make sense.
Anne, a surgeon, loses her first patient in the operating room; a patient that she recognises. Who is he and should she have tried harder to save him? We are also introduced to state attorney Paula and Derreck, Anne’s husband, who play a large role in this story. Although I didn’t particularly like the characters I did find that they were well fleshed out and I could understand some of their actions.
I enjoyed this cat and mouse thriller and particularly like medical based books. This one seemed very well researched. What I really enjoyed was how it all came together with lots of little twists on the way. It took while for the story to get going but once it did I glided across the pages easily. I will be checking out the authors other books after this. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for my copy of this book.
I love a cinematic psych thriller – one that I can picture as a tv episode or movie – and The Surgeon by Leslie Wolfe fits the bill perfectly!
I was drawn in from the beginning and stayed up late (really late), turning pages to find out how everything in the intricate plot fit together.
And while I did guess a couple of connections early on, I didn’t catch a big one. Overall, it didn’t matter, though, because even though I was right, I still didn’t know how it all related.
Without giving anything away, motives play a big part in the plot. But if you think you know what a character’s motive is, you probably are wrong. The author does a great job of giving the reader enough to form opinions but withholds little bits that ultimately lead to the truth.
Did I mention I love that?
The setup, a heart surgeon with a secret and an ambitious ASA with an axe to grind, was also intriguing. I kept picturing an episode of “The Wire” or “Law & Order.”,
The main characters, Anne and Paula, were clear and fully realized. I got a feeling for both of them through their actions and words.
If I had to pick at anything, it would be Anne’s obsession over what happened during the operation. I can understand that a good surgeon would want to know exactly why something occurred, but it became a bit repetitive.
Also, I don’t think Derreck was as fleshed out as the women. We know about his ambition because we are told about it, but I didn’t see it from him. He seems to be more of a pawn in the story instead of an equal character. Maybe that is the point.
The Surgeon had everything I enjoy in a psych thriller: compelling main characters, hidden agendas, long-held secrets, and surprise twists. Leslie Wolfe has been added to my one-click author list.

Overview: Anne Wiley is a gifted surgeon who, upon recognizing a man on her operating table, stops efforts to resuscitate him. Paula Fuselier is a determined assistant state attorney with the promise of a bright career if she plays her cards right over the next few months.
Paula is tipped off that the first ever patient to die on Anne's table might not have been an accident. But as her investigation continues, Anne realizes the determination behind Paula's eyes is more than professional interest - something about this case is personal.
What I loved about this book:
The incredible detail in this book, both medical and legal, is impressive. This is a really interesting combination of medical and legal thriller, showcased from two different main characters.
This was a slow burn read to me in the beginning. The medical/legal detail kept me engaged from the very beginning, and once I got to about 60% of the way through and little clues from the plot began sliding into place, it quickly transitioned into a must-finish-asap sort of read.
What I didn't love about this book:
Anne was just a little too perfect to me. Sure, she killed a guy, but that - to me - was justified. Her willingness to forgive Paula without a second thought felt almost too easy. Sure, there's compassion for those who have experienced serious trauma - but by that point, so had Anne, and by Paula's hand, which to me would at least cause some apprehension.
Her surgery stats seem... a little wild to me, too. Just seems too improbable that a surgeon practicing long enough to have her face on a billboard as a hospital's star surgeon has really never - not once - lost a patient.
Overall:
This was a fantastic, genre-bending read. I think this falls somewhere between medical, legal, and domestic thriller and I'm SO into that combo.
The last page or two were perfection. Can we get a #2 on how this plays out?
I haven't read Leslie Wolfe before but color me impressed - looking forward to reading through this author's catalogue!
Took me a bit to get into this storyline but once I had got used to it I really enjoyed it even though it wasn't a nice thing to read about.
The characters were all well described and no doubt the author researched this book well with accuracy.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC which I can recommend.
Surgeons save lives everyday, but sometimes something goes wrong and they are devastated. A patient dying in their OR is horrible and they know they did not do anything wrong. Why did it happen?
But what if they are responsible? Not by doing anything wrong per se, but by not doing everything they could have done and give up too soon? But can you give up too soon when you are convinced there was nothing more you could have done or could you...?
When a patient dies it's horrible, but when the ASA comes after you, you don't know what is going to happen. You fear the worst though. There is nothing left for you to do. You have to find out what was going on, because something does not add up.
Why? is the question that keeps going through your mind.On the other hand you made the world a better place once you knew who you were operating on. Will everybody share that thought though...?
People often lie and cheat because they are after something. Some of them are pretty clear in what they want. Others have a very deeply hidden agenda...
I loved this book. I admire the author for the research she has done. I felt like now I am able to do the operation myself. ;)
I was not one of Paula's fans, but in the end I did understand what her reasons were. She was following her heart, but did not think things through. I felt for her.
Derreck is something else though. He knows what he wants too and he must be thinking that a bit of blackmail is the way to go.
A great story. 5 stars
Thank you
