Star Bradbury has written an informative and concise book with lots f practical applications for helping anyone make informed and educated decisions on behalf of their parents. SHe draws on 25 years of experience working in senior living and assisted living communities. There are links to resources which can be invaluable for information and funding. These resources are mainly for American readers but can be tools to learn and navigate healthcare options available. The book takes into consideration the feelings and emotions that we go through as carers and helps process those emotions with compassion. I do wish there was a Canadian version.
SUCCESSFULLY NAVIGATING YOUR PARENTS' SENIOR YEARS by Star Bradbury is subtitled "Critical Information to Maximize Their Independence and Make Sure They Get the Care They Need." That thought alone captures Bradbury's helpful approach to this topic – she strives to respect an elder's desire for independence while also stressing the need to establish timely plans for adequate care. This text is an excellent primer and encourages readers to raise all kinds of questions about topics like parents' financial situation, where they could live, getting more care when needed, and planning for the inevitable funeral and its aftermath. While not complete with links in the preview I saw, the appendices appear to be very useful, too; they are intended to cover commonly used terms, online resources and websites, and a list of critical documents. Much of that information is accessible through the author's website, including a list of questions to ask when touring Senior communities or care facilities: https://starbradbury.com/touring-questions/
How we approach the conversation with our parents about their end of life care and plans is very critical and the timing of when and how we approach it is key. In Successfully Navigating Your Parents' Senior Years, Star Bradbury provides readers with a helpful guide of things to consider when planning.
Star Bradbury has over 25 years of experience working in senior living and has been the director of an assisted-living and memory care facility as well as having worked in a life care community. In this book she shares with us her expertise so that we can make educated and well-informed decisions regarding our family.
Bradbury provides readers with tools to navigate the world of senior healthcare by outlining our options at each stage of the life cycle span, informing us about what types of programs exist and where we can find information and funding. She also defines many terms and professional roles that are helpful to understand as we plan and interact with medical and healthcare systems. She encourages us to consider the Medicare programs within each State and provides websites and resources for where we can do our own research.
Bradbury provides readers with basic questions to ask in order to determine the type of lifestyle that our parent's want as they age. This book is sure to help many people with family planning and end of life care/hospice planning. I love that this book takes a holistic approach to care and encourages readers to pause and process thoughts and feelings along the way. The author also encourages readers to consider how they will manage the many elements that may result in more family conflict than should be necessary which is another great aspect of this text.
