First book in a series from an author I haven’t read before and it was ok. Found it a bit hard getting into it in places will see how the other books in the series go.
This is the first book of what looks like a cracking series. I just loved Millie and her friends, and the story pulled me in and kept me entertained from the start. I have always enjoyed Kerry’s books and think the way he adds a touch of humour now and again, as usual made me laugh out loud. Reminds me of my all time favourite of his “Jessica”.
He’s a great author, and knowledgeable too and this shows in his work. Usually with the first one, it takes time to like the characters but as there weren’t too many the story just flowed and you couldn’t help but like them.
The ending was a surprise, and so I’m off now to read the next instalment, which I’m sure will be just as enjoyable plus I like the fact that there appears to be 4 atm so to be able to read them back to back is even better.
My thanks to Kerry, the publishers and Netgalley for the ARC.
I enjoyed this one. It was sometimes creepy but it was a little like a cozy mystery with menaces. I’m looking forward to reading the second one in this series. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
The One Who Fell (A Whitecliff Bay Mystery Book 1) by Kerry Wilkinson Millie and her story was slow paced and dragged in places. When finally got to the end there was only a partial conclusion of the mysteries. A pleasant enough read but did not like that the book had a “to be continued” ending on one of the major elements of the story.
Thank you to the author, Bookouture, and Netgalley for the opportunity to preview the book.
I loved this book, the skill of this author gives you a satisfying ending, while desperate to read more. I’m so invested in these characters and I’m so pleased that this is a series. Fantastic read.
This book sent chills down my spine!
i really felt like someone was watching me as secrets started unfolding. So gripping with every page and the twists and turns just make this book unputdownable!
If you are looking for a new series this needs to be added to the top of the reading pile. you will not be disappointed.
This mystery just happened to hit a few plot and character elements I tend to dislike. Lots of drama and dysfunctional relationships around the main character, and it very much reads as if it is part of a series that’s meant to tell one, much longer story. It’s well written and dramatic, so others without my objections may really enjoy it. It just wasn’t for me. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest opinion.
This is a great read from Kerry Wilkinson.
Millie volunteers at the local care home and while she’s spending some time with Ingrid, she tells Millie that she saw a woman on the roof opposite her bedroom, and that she fell.
Millie is concerned about the woman so starts asking questions.
Due to her past she’s not always given a warm reception and with some of the locals blaming her for her parents death, Millie wonders if she’ll get to the bottom of it.
She gets in touch with Guy and he’s intrigued by the story so helps Millie make some enquiries.
This is a great mystery thriller that will have you racing through the pages.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Very excited to be given the opportunity to get a first look at a new series from one of my go to authors.
Meet Millie, at a crossroads in her life, still lives in the small town that she grew up in where everyone knows everyone and their business, or at least they are sure they know all about Millie’s business, or do they?
Nice introduction with an unusual main plot and the usual irreverent humour of the author.
Looking forward to see if we will find out the truth of Millie’s business in number two The One Who Was Taken
Setting the Scene; Whitecliff is a small seaside town like so many where the citizens know, or at least recognize, each other, and many thrive on secrets and gossip. Millie Westlake is the subject of much of that gossip. Millie was a wife and mother when her affair with a Member of Parliament goes viral, costing her a marriage and custody of her son. She is forced to move in with her parents whose subsequent deaths cast a larger shadow over her life. Since then, she has found some purpose in volunteering at the local nursing home. Many of the residents just want someone with whom they can talk or play games. Millie is there to help fill that need. When Ingrid, one of the home residents, tells Millie she saw a girl in a white gown pushed from a nearby rooftop, there is just enough detail to peak Millie's interest. When she begins looking into it, she finds much more than she anticipated, Some will enrich her life, and some will endanger it.
What I Thought: This in an interesting introduction to a flawed, but not unlikeable, MC. There is more to her story than the surface facts reveal, but she holds her tongue and keeps her head down, at least until she is driven to follow up on Ingrid's reported sighting. Without excusing her mistakes, I like Millie and found myself routing for her. Her friendship with Jack rescues the story from being maudlin, and a new found relationship that develops adds another layer of interaction and revelation for Millie. Let me state here that there is absolutely no romance or love interest in this story. Jack is a gay man with a partner, and both are Millie's friends, maybe her only friends. The mystery of the girl on the rooftop is somewhat predictable, though the unfolding of the story is interesting, nonetheless. By the time the story concludes, the mystery is solved, and we are provided some insights into Millie's background/motivation. However, details of the deaths of her parents remain shrouded in mystery, hopefully for another book that will include more character development, as well.
I’m enjoying this series. Good reads with an interesting premise. Quick easy reads with some humour thrown in. Good storyline with likeable characters. Enjoyed the series so far.

This story was a bit less action then I am used to BUT the amazing characters and depth in creating the story more than compensate for that. This is a well written investigative whodunit. There are twists and turns and the story holds you in. The way this is told is like you are woven into the story. I devoured this series and I am sad to say goodbye to Millie and Guy.
This is a whole series you should definitely try out.
Many of my favorite authors are published by Bookouture and this is the first book by Kerry Wilkinson that I have read and unfortunately it was not for me.
The pace of this book was slow and a bit tedious, struggling to get into it and almost put it aside but pushed through to read ‘til the end. I would classify it more as a soft/light mystery, rather than fast paced, gripping, edge of your seat reading that I am use to and love.
The first half of the book, the most that happens is Millie being told someone was pushed off a roof that she then starts to investigate and the sighting of a panther that brings a retired journalist to her door, apart from that bringing him to her door, I was wondering, why was it part of the story, where were they going with this, is this critical in some way to the story or just something random?
This is more a story about Millie and her journey, post-divorce, notoriety as a result of her parents death and being accused of it and the public humiliation and fallout of an affair with a politician along with snippets into the stories of the town she is living and those in her life.
This is the first book in the new ‘Whitecliff Bay’ mystery series by Kerry Wilkinson. I have read a large amount of books by this author but somehow this book almost felt like it was written by someone else. It took me awhile to get into this cosy mystery novel but hopefully will set me up for the other books in the series.
Millie Westlake works at the local nursing home as a volunteer where she enjoys mixing with the residents. Her own past is a dark one, with a failed marriage as well as been accused of killing her parents. One night one of the elderly residents tells Millie a story where she saw a girl pushed off the roof. Millie is unsure whether to believe the woman but is unable to get the story out of her head and feels the need to investigate for herself. Once she starts investigating she uncovers evidence that appears to back up the woman’s story, the problem is her probing may be putting her in danger.
Not really the page turner I was hoping for but still a good read and hopefully the start of another successful series. This first book is an introduction to the characters who presumably will be appearing in subsequent books.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Bookouture for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
This is my first book by this author. It was a good mystery but I did feel a little lost because the story of Millie’s past is slowly brought up. Overall it was a 3.5 for me. I would recommend because the next book was very good.
Millie Westlake is a volunteer at her local nursing home. She enjoys spending time with the residents and hearing all of the rumors, especially when they don’t involve her life mistakes. Her marriage fell apart and then she was accused of killing her parents!
When one of the elderly ladies named Ingrid tells Millie a shocking story, she doesn’t know whether to believe it to be true. Ingrid says she saw a girl being pushed off of the roof of a local home while looking out her window. Although Millie should probably ignore the story, she can’t seem to get it out of her head. She decides to investigate.
After finding evidence that Ingrid’s story could be true, Millie digs deeper. She may be upsetting someone though and feels like she’s being watched. Will she be able to find out the truth without damaging consequences?
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
I attempted to listen to the audiobook version of this and it was a fail for me. I however did enjoy the written version of it and will be reading the next two books in the series after giving the first one a chance in written form. Audiobook form could not keep me interested at all.
The One Who Fell was a mystery crime novel. I gave this a 4 ⭐️. Kerry Wilkinson is one of my favorite authors. This story was about relationships, secrets, second chances and mystery.
What happened to Millie? And what about her parents? I found the writing entertaining and enjoyable with great side characters.
I listened to the audiobook also and found the narrator perfect for this book.
Thanks Bookouture via NetGalley.
Unfortunately, this book wasn't for me, I got to 26% through and all we know is that someone may have fallen off a roof and there may be a panther roaming around, I did try to keep on but it just hadn't grabbed my attention and wasn't interested in picking up the book, there were attempts at "cliff hangers" at the end of each chapter but it took so long to get there I wasn't really interested anymore, sorry I am sure some will find it exciting it just wasn't a page turner
I'm a massive fan of Kerry Wilkinson's Jessica Daniel series so was intrigued by this new series. It's a quick read with short chapters and a bit of humour. I do really enjoy his style of writing but it didn't quite have his fast paced, you've gotta find out what happens storyline like in his other series. There's a lot happening in the story but it wasn't my favourite. Still worth a read if you wanting something quick, easy going and a bit of mystery. I give it a 3.5 but I've rounded it up to a 4.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for a copy of "The One Who Fell" in exchange for my honest review.
Millie Westlake is a nursing home volunteer and a dog groomer. She is also suspected by by many in town to have killed her parents. She shares custody of her son Eric with her ex-husband Alex who seems to have a deep-dark secret. One day Ingrid - a resident of the nursing home, and an unreliable witness according to others at the home - see someone jump off a roof in the distance - or they may have been pushed? Millie sets out to find the truth while putting herself in danger at the same time and unsuspectingly others as well. When she is warned to be careful, she does the exact opposite and puts herself and others in harms way.
This story takes longer to get going than other books by this author but once it does, the suspense is there and the interesting characters start to develop. It will be interesting to see what Millie does next.
