Matthew and Helena had a college romance, now twenty years later they are back together and on holiday in Iceland. Whilst out hiking Helena insists on getting the perfect photo and ends up hanging from the cliff edge, fearing she won't survive she makes a shocking confession to Matthew, but what did she confess to and how will he feel once he hears the full story? Once back in England life returns to some normality until the knock on Helena's door changes everything, someone overheard her confession and is here to blackmail her, what will Matthew do?
Keep Her Secret is told in three parts and from Matthew's perspective, it's a fast paced read with some very likeable characters and some not so. The story unfolds in Iceland but then returns to England where Helena and Matthew are taken on a rollercoaster of horrific events and can't find the brake to stop the ride and get off. Everything they do just drops them deeper into a nightmare that seems to be never ending. It's a tale of many twists and turns which, at times, appeared to be a bit over the top but this, in my opinion, added to the thrill of it all, especially as it ends on a cliffhanger (no pun intended). I loved everything about this story, which is Edwards at his finest, and I was up way past my bedtime to finish it at 2am.
I'd like to thank the author, Amazon Publishing and Netgalley for inviting me to read this, I will post my review on Goodreads now and Amazon on publication day.
An involving book that hooked you and kept you there, loved the setting of Iceland for the start of the book, easy to read and get into in the story and an all round good exciting read
Keep Her Secret by Mark Edwards
After twenty years apart, Matthew and Helena have rekindled their college romance and are away in Iceland on their first holiday together. Swept up in the romance on a mountain hike, one moment they are taking the perfect photo, the next Helena is hanging from the cliff edge.
Wow ! Such an edge of your seat read - brilliant.
Love , love , love all books by Mark Edwards and this one could quite possibly be his best yet.
Really enjoyed getting behind the relationship dynamics between Matthew and Helena and reading how they got to where they are.
Helena and Matthew are on a holiday in Iceland, they’ve only got back together recently after 20 years apart!
With secrets shared on the holiday, the pair are in for a shock once they return to the U.K, repercussions were never expected!
This is one of those books where as you read it, you tell yourself that surely so much can’t happen to one couple, then you can’t stop reading because you want to see just what else could possibly happen!
This was a great story that takes you on one heck of a fast ride. Some great characters, and some pretty loathsome ones too. An intense thriller that had me enthralled from the very start.
My thanks to Mark Edwards, Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
When Matthew and Helena reconnect after years apart, they decide to seal their new romance with a trip to Iceland. When a freak accident leaves Helena literally hanging from a precipice, she utters a startling confession. Mark is rattled, but understanding and agrees to keep her secret - however someone else overhears her story, and they aren't as forgiving, leading the couple to test the limits of how far they are willing to go to protect one another.
I'm going to start out by stating that I'm a huge Mark Edwards fan, so Please know that going in. I'll read anything he puts out, so that's where my perspective is.
This was a tense suspenseful read from start to finish. The action begins with Helena's accident and then just shoots off like a rocket from there. I literally read this book in about a day and a half because I couldn't atop reading until I found out what was going to happen. It was so tense! And as usual, there were plenty of big twists and turns along the way: nothing is ever straightforward or as it seems.
The ending too was classic horror/suspense, just that what if/"oh no!" scenario playing out. I was almost laughing when I read it. Just a totally intense moment right there - I don't want to say too much else.
The only reason I didn't give it five stars was that it was missing a little bit more of the horror edge that I like in Edward' stuff. This was definitely more suspense than thriller. And I like the thriller edge in his work. But as a suspense novel - it was 5/5. But I miss the creepiness that's normally there.
But I still highly recommend this one, of course. don't miss this one. Or any one.
Helena and Matthew were college sweethearts. After 20 years apart, they meet again at their school reunion, Helena's husband has since died. The spark is still there between Helena and Matthew and so they get back together and live happily ever after... or do they?
They decide to go on a trip to Iceland together and join a group of people for a tour. Disaster strikes as Helena falls, hanging over a cliff edge terrified she is going to die, she says " oh God, this is my punishment " The group arrive and help Helena to safety.
Later in that day, Matthew asks Helena what she meant when she was hanging over the cliff, so she tells him her secret!
They return home and all is well until Devon arrives whom they had met on their trip, she knocks on the door and says, "I know what you did!"
This book keeps you guessing with a few twists along the way.
I really loved this book , a brilliant read . I have read other books by this author which all have been brilliant. Such an amazing, unusual story line. I didn’t want to leave this book down . The characters were really well described and the story unfolded keeping you on the edge of your seat with lots of twists and turns. . Would really highly recommend this as a fantastic read.
I could not put this book down! Mark Edwards has done it again. Building a story that is believable enough to feel real. This book had fantastic twists and turns that made the journey so much better!!
“Keep her secret “is a thrilling novel that takes readers on a perilous journey through the stunning Icelandic landscape. The story begins with two hikers, Helena and Matthew, who get separated from their group and find themselves in a dangerous situation. The novel starts strong, with an engaging plot and well-developed characters. As the story progresses, the author explores the extraordinary lengths people will go to in order to keep secrets. The pace is fast, with one disastrous situation after another, making it an entertaining ride.
However, as the plot unfolds, the story becomes more and more far-fetched. The twists become less believable, but still managed to keep me guessing. Despite this, the ending is good, providing a satisfying conclusion.
Overall, "The Split" is an engaging and diverting read that keeps readers focused from start to finish. While some of the twists may be over the top, the novel is still an entertaining page-turner that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.
I read this book in 2 days over the Easter holidays and I'm absolutely blown away. Such an interesting story, all the ends were neatly tied up and a fantastic ending. I'm so glad the author has written this book based in England as opposed to a couple of recent ones set in the USA.
Magpies and Here To Stay were my favourites but I now have a new one.
I really enjoyed the atmosphere and suspense of this novel. However, I did find it relatively easy to guess what was going to happen. Overall I kept turning the pages quickly and enjoyed my time with it but will likely forget the plot somewhat quickly. Edwards however is a talented writer and I will continue to keep reading his books!
A great read! Loved the descriptions of Iceland at the start, so beautiful. Quickly the story becomes tense and pacey. Love the darkness of the dilemma of having created a hostage - don't want to hurt them but can't set them free. Matthew was a bit too needy in love, but I guess the story wouldn't have worked if he wasn't. Enjoyed.
Thoroughly enjoyed this Book, another great read from Mark Edwards, very good story line to keep you on the edge of your seat, from start to finish , lots of twists and turns I found it very difficult to put down once I had started , The Title says it all I definitely would recommend this book, you will be amazed , I don't like to give much away as you will see why .
This is a great book. Keeps you guessing to the very end. Hard to put down. Every time you know what's going on another surprise awaits you. I recommend this book highly.
Buckle up!
A once in a lifetime adventure, a rekindled romance and twists and turns on every page! When Mark Edwards writes a book, Mark Edwards writes a BESTSELLING book! Keep Her Secret knocks it out of the park! Helena and Matthew are former college sweethearts who find their way back together again after a tragic event in Helena’s life. A spontaneous trip to New Zealand ignites their romance and a life-altering near death experience starts the downward spiraling into unimaginable sequence of events.
Helena reveals a dark deep secret to Matthew and is completely unaware that the mountains of New Zealand have ears. Upon their return home, their true adventure begins as the secret that Helena revealed comes to light. Helena and Matthew, two ordinary nice people are soon thrust into a never-ending maze of non-stop actions that Helena and Matthew cannot control. There appears to be no way out! Then in an instant, the final secrets are divulged in a shattering turn of events and Helena and Matthew have one final secret they will need to forever keep. We all know that secrets are rarely buried forever. Is that the case for Helena and Matthew?
This is one of my go-to authors and I have absolutely loved every book I have read by him. Sadly, and I hate to say this but I have to be honest, this one didn't quite make the very high bar he has set for himself with his previous offerings. Not that it isn't a good book in itself, it just did hit the heady heights I was expecting...
What I usually love about his books is the scare factor and that is born from credibility. And I think that's where, for me, it fell away from the quality I was expecting. At times it was bonkers and I do fear it skirted the line of being over the top and farcical.
But it's a jolly good read nevertheless. One that held my attention even through the eye rolls.
We start with Helena and Matthew - previously together at uni, now reconnected after the death of Helena's husband. They are, bizarrely, on a holiday in Iceland, arranged not long after they met again. After a moment of panic, which saw her dangling over the edge of a cliff, Helena makes a bizarre confession of a dark secret to Matthew... After the holiday, they are just settling down to life, Matthew having gone to stay with Helena, when a familiar face turns up at their house. A face from the Iceland trip and they know a secret... What lengths will Helena and Matthew go to keep that secret, well, secret...?
And from that point, that great start, it all goes a little bonkers and I wasn't really completely sold on the events that followed.
But, and this is important, it is well worth sticking with for the ending, which was really good... and disproves the whole journey vs destination debate!
I probably should also add that my enjoyment, or lack thereof, wasn't assisted by the characters who I didn't really like (I know you don't have to but you do need some connection) and really didn't care what happened to them.
Will this put me off the author and his future books...? Heck no, definitely not. I'll be there like a shot for his next one. One swallow never makes a summer and one book that wasn't for me in no way taints my overall opinion.
My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Mathew and Helena are given a second chance at love but will it be "happily ever after"? Of course not! This is a Mark Edwards book! You'll be hooked from the opening chapter... a cliff hanger! Even after reading all of Mark's books I still am kept guessing til the final reveal.
When I first read the blurb for Keep Her Secret I thought that Mak had changed genre and gone down the romance route.
But boy was I totally wrong!
Yes there is a romantic element to the book as two old university lovers Matthew and Helena meet up at a reunion and after not seeing each other in twenty years they start spending time with each other decide to go on a trip to Iceland as friends.
After a heart stopping moment for Helena whilst in Iceland and a conversation with Matthew after the event, and a change in Matthews circumstances he moves in with Helena.
But what happened in Iceland didn't stay in Iceland and there is someone out for revenge.
But who is it and what are they after?
Could you commit the perfect murder? And if you had the chance would you be prepared to do it again?
Are some secrets best left unsaid?
Pure Popcorn Thriller
Keep Her Secret is an over-the-top thriller in which a shocking secret leads to blackmail, kidnapping, and murder.
Helena and Matthew, a couple on vacation, unintentionally reveal a secret to a stranger that comes back to haunt them in ways they could have never imagined. Their new relationship is put to the test as they are forced to deal with life-changing consequences.
The chapters alternate between Matthew and Helena. Helena is an unreliable narrator, as the reader questions her version of events. Matthew is likable, whereas Helena is a bit cold and robotic. They both make stupid decisions resulting in how the events unfold.
Told in three parts--Part 1 sets up the events. Part 2 is a little slow, and Part 3 goes off the rails.
The plot is all over the place, it is a little chaotic, and some aspects felt loosely strung together. However, the fun part of reading this was that whenever I believed I had it all figured out, a twist would be thrown in the mix, taking the story in a different direction than I anticipated. Some of the twists were surprising, and others were ridiculous and required suspending disbelief.
Mark Edwards’ books can sometimes go off the deep end, but they are usually saved for me by the dark humor of the narrative. Sadly, this book was lacking in that area.
Overall, this is a decent popcorn thriller, but it is not what I was hoping for.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and Amazon Publishing UK.
