Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me free access to the advanced digital copy of this book.
What a fun book! Want to know more about 4*Town and their story? This one is for you! It is like a companion to the movie as it is all original stories that add depth to these characters who are only introduced in the movie. Just a cute read!
Oop this is my first review for NetGalley, I put everything in the publisher note!
To summarize, I thought the art was cute and spot on for these characters and the audience. The story overall was a bit of a let down. I know this is just an add on for some fan favorite characters, but I would have loved to see them working together as much as seeing them individually. Even their broken up stories had them paired with other people, so it's not like there was no opportunity to explore their individual personalities while having them be together.
This was so cute!! The characters a whole lot older than I thought they were, one even has kids!! I really liked knowing more about them.
Big thanks to NetGalley and Viz Media for the Arc!
Holy did I enjoy this ! 4 Town hit a special place in my heart in the movie and to see the character brought to life and more depth added was amazing!! This story is just fun! It's good time getting to know the different members and how they interact together! I loved the variety in the boys and their different goals! Honestly I would be happy reading multiple different stories about them and their careers as boy band idols! The illustrations truly brought another dimension to the story! This is perfect for any fans of Turning Red or 4 Town!!
Thank you SO MUCH NetGalley and Viz Media for access to this DELIGHTFUL ARC
5/5 stars!!
Anyone who knew me last year knows I was OBSESSED with Turning Red when it came out, and this manga addition is just so good! It was just so sweet and wholesome and FUNNY!! Absolutely loved it!
4 Town is the band in the Turning Red Disney movie. This graphic novel is about the band. However, I’m not exactly sure who the audience for this graphic novel is. At times it feels like it is for a middle grade however, with the “Dad” issues and the meet cute love interest feel makes it feel more adult. This is one of those things that I think is It’s meant for about six grade and that’s who will read it. I would much rather read about the characters from Turning Red, which I think was a fantastic story.
I received an eARC courtesy of VIZ Media/VIZ Media LLC via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
Quite simply, this is okay. Not sure what the overall purpose of this book was or who the target audience is.
I loved the extension of the movie with this graphic novel. Turning Red was one of my favorite movies of 2022 and this just made me want to rewatch the movie again! I will definitely be ordering this for my library.
I will be honest, I wanted to read this because I enjoy Turning Red. The art style was so cute, but the overall story was a bit eh to me. Overall though I have sold this to a few Turning Red fans!
Thank you to NetGalley and Viz Media for an e-copy to review.
What a cute tie-in to the movie Turning Red! As a lover of the early 2000s boy band group I enjoyed seeing more of 4*Town 4 Ever. Getting a glimpse into their personal lives felt like such a bonus to anyone who has seen the movie and couldn't get enough of the band. While no real overarching plot except what the boys do on their off days I still think it is a fun read and thought the art was clean and well done, really matches the typical manga style.
This was.....short and interesting. We get some backstory on the 4 Town boys - in unexpected ways- but it lacked any sort of plot that we would be used to in any medium. As Manga, the characters lend themselves well to this medium so that is nice. I wanted to really enjoy this but it took about 20 minutes to work though and is geared toward a very young audience.
I'm not quite sure what I was expecting when I saw that there was a 4*Town manga, to be honest, but I can't say I was disappointed? It's largely a get-to-know series of scenes featuring each band member so you can get more of an idea of their individual stories and personalities. They play off each other pretty well and seem to be a realistic portrayal of life beyond the concerts and recording sessions that bands have.
That said, I feel like they were given almost *too* deep of personalities/situations? [Spoilers] Jesse talks to Tae Young about how he was adopted, he can't find his birth parents, and his adoptive father died when he was young and he couldn't support his adoptive mom in her grief, so he ended up finding family in the children he had later on. Tae Young has a very in-depth (and slightly dark) explanation about his own father verbally and emotionally abusing him because he isn't what his dad wanted his son to be. Aaron Z. is deeply jealous of Robaire, with whom he grew up and feels is "too perfect" and is sucking the happiness out of him (which gets resolved when Robaire literally sings his praises to him). The only band member who didn't have a depressing or dramatic story was Aaron T., who simply took his bodyguard shopping and got into some shenanigans with fans. The depth was not at all what I was expecting when I saw we were getting a tie-in manga for the band.
That said and like I said before, I wasn't disappointed. Despite its seriousness in the guys' stories, it was just as wholesome and sincerely funny (Aaron T. dropping his ice cream and Jesse opening a jar for Robaire were my favorite pages). Did this plot device of a set of characters really need all this? Nah, not really. Am I okay with it? Honestly, yeah. And I'm especially happy for all the kids who are inevitably going to take all this new information about these characters and make fanfic about it. This kind of supplemental character development and showcasing is what we need for popular media.
(One thing, though: even though everyone but Tae Young is in their twenties, the bit about their pajamas felt a little yikes because Aaron Z. says he sleeps naked. I'm not sure a 22-year-old telling his fans who are mostly minors (and minors who aren't even teens yet) that he sleeps naked was a good choice here.)
It was everything I expected and more. I loved the movie, Turning Red, so I was really excited for this. Good job with the artwork also it is soooo pretty!
A really fun tie in manga for fans of the boy band 4Town in Disneys Turning Red. You get to know each of the guys a bit better and they have their own issues that they are dealing with. The illustrations are in true manga fashion and will leave you laughing at some of the hilarious scenes included. Lots of friendship cute moments and tons of laughs!
Turning Red: 4*Town 4*Real takes Disney/Pixar fans behind the scenes of the titular boy band. This volume contains original stories that reveal the struggles the members face while staying true to the themes of the original film. The art is great and the stories are fun. This is another Disney hit that Turning Red fans MUST READ. As one myself, I was very happy with this volume and look forward to purchasing a copy when it releases.
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to review this title.
Fun read for fans of 4 Town and Turning Red movie. Each band member spends some alone time in different and surprising ways. I can see this being a popular read for the demograpic it is meant for and maybe some more additions to the story. Well done.
4 stars for 4*Town? Yes, actually! This spin-off title could have coasted off the love for its mother film and I wouldn't have blamed it or batted an eye. No, instead, readers get a fun trip back into the Turning Red universe that does indeed shine a spotlight on the favored local boy band. I expected some fun art and a few cameos from the film, what I wasn't expecting was actual backstories for each of the band members in their little spotlight chapters. It was nice to see them be more fleshed out as actual characters. 4*Town didn't have to go that hard, but like the actual songs from the fictional band, it did, and I respect the effort put into it.
This is a fun graphic novel that shows a day in the life of 4Town. Fans of Turning Red will really enjoy getting to see more of the characters that make up the boy band from the movie. This doesn’t shy away from the downsides of fame or insecurities someone may have even when it seems they have it all. The friendship and support they offer each other is really heartwarming. Overall, a quick and entertaining read! Thank you NetGalley and VIZ Media for the arc.
In this Turning Red spinoff, the fictional boy band 4*Town takes center stage. During their stop in Toronto, amid a North American tour, the boys get to take some time to themselves and this graphic novel follows them to the museum, mall, and practice room. Torontonians will be delighted to see local spots and references are abundant, just as in the movie. There's also heart to this beyond nostalgia as the boys deal with family issues and insecurity (the Aaron T. chapter "Attention" is more of a breather as it's just pure fun). Altogether, this is such a charming book sure to delight fans of the movie who wanted to see more of the band that set Mei and her friends' hearts ablaze. I may just be a 4*Townie after this!
