Reading a book about an older woman losing her freedom was honestly refreshing. I feel like we forget the elderly and we forget to think about how terrifying these "homes" can be, and I know in some cases it is the only option.
But I am telling you, as a former hospice worker, that old age and death go a lot more smoothly when the families take their people in and care for them. I mean when they can make it happen.
The whole scene where they cut our protagonist's hair was hard for me. Hair is so personal! I wonder often how people can work in jobs where they violate people. I have known "good people" who do these things. We now in the 1940s "good people" did horrible unthinkable things.
I liked this book. It was terrifying but we also got to see the different perspectives. It was also incredibly wholesome. Especially the ending.

Heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Definitely one of the best books this year.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
So this book gave me constant anxiety throughout it. And it was really hard to like any of the characters in it. What Jakalyn did was a bit unrealistic at the end. And I feel there were a lot of things that weren’t quite accurate.
However the basic theme of being sent to a facility by a family member and not being able to leave just gave me complete anxiety.
This was an ok book that could have been a great book with some slightly better writing.

After her husband's death, Jacklyn is grieving and not quite herself. When her children send her to what she believes is a retreat, she sees this as a way to get back to herself. However, she soon learns this is actually a facility for psychiatric treatment and she can't leave. She becomes determined to break out.

I was expecting more suspense than this book gave. I am also not sure about all the different perspectives here. I like books like that, but I'm not sure it worked as well with the premise here.
