He Said He Would Be Late is about an Elizabeth (Liz) Bennett. She lives in Boston with her one year old daughter Emma, and her husband Arlo. Arlo receives a text from a coworker and Liz becomes obsessed they are having an affair. Instead of asking him about the text, or the woman, she begins basically stalking the woman. As Liz spirals out of control so does the book. I have always had a dislike for people who don’t work and just have to hire a nanny, and just spend no time with their children. This is Liz, though she’s suppose to be an author. The book goes on and spirals too long, it needs something to make it more entertaining.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. The review is my own.
I had the opportunity to listen to He Said He Would Be Late by Justine Sullivan and was excited as the blurb had me interested. Liz is living her happy life. She has published a book, her husband is successful, wealthy and a good father to her daughter. Then Liz sees a text with a kissing face emoji on her husband’s phone, she begins to worry he may be cheating. This drives Liz to stalk the woman who sent the text and figure out what is going on. Liz’s antics had me turning the pages and wondering what would happen next. An enjoyable read that that had me captivated.
Happy listening!
This book was a DNF for me so I can't say how it finished. I listened to 25% of the book so I feel I gave it a good chance. In that 25% nothing really happened other than she was afraid her husband was having an affair. There was a lot of detail but no action which I feel made the story drag on and I finally threw in the towel. I don't do that very often. Read/listen and judge for yourself.
This one wasn't really my cup of tea. I feel like the premise was interesting, but I'm not a fan of the actual execution. It just wasn't for me.
The cover is great and the synopsis sounded fantastic so I had to pick this one up. I loved the audio, the narrator did a good job of capturing Liz’s escalating fear of whether her husband was cheating on her or not as well as capturing her insecurities. I would not call this a psychological thriller, it was more of a domestic about being a new mom and paranoia of the change that entails and not feeling good enough and other insecurities compounded with the feeling that her allegedly perfect husband might not be faithful. The plot was a little too focused around whether he was or was not cheating but I thought it culminated in a very fitting ending.

This is about a woman that is struggling with new motherhood. She feels as though she’s lost her identity and then she finds something that makes her believe her husband is cheating. She becomes obsessed with discovering the truth. I really enjoyed this book, the author is funny- I loved the main character’s inner dialogue. She was so relatable and I cracked up many times. I did want a bit more from this story- more tension, suspense or a plot spin. Overall, enjoyable!
I received an advanced listening copy of He Said He Would Be Late by Justine Sullivan through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review and, here it is.

This story is about a woman who sees a suspicious text on her husband's phone and spends the entire story trying to catch him. I kept waiting for something more to happen but unfortunately, nothing came. I did not feel invested nor was I captivated.

I feel like if you like easy thrillers this could be for you.

Thanks to Macmillan Audio, NetGalley, and author Justine Sullivan for this ALC to honestly review. He Said He Would Be Late and is out now.
Special thanks to MacMillan Audio and Netgalley for the digital advanced copy of this book.
I was going into this book expecting a thriller. But the characters in this book made it really enjoyable.
I really connected with Liz's character and often times felt like I was reading about myself. But I thought it would be a thriller and the ending came so abruptly, I still have questions because it was not satisfying for me. "shrugs"
Is he cheating? Is he not? The title of this audiobook drew me in, and Liz, the main character took me on a roller coaster ride inside her head that was crazy fun and totally enjoyable! The narrator did a great job of bringing everything to life. I highly recommend He Said He Would Be Late and I'm looking forward to reading more from Justine Sullivan.
Thank you to NetGalley, the Author and Publisher for providing me with an ARC audio of this book for my honest review.
Never have I hated a main character more than in this book. I wanted to give her props for maybe realizing she wasn’t on board for mom-life. But the incessant complaining about every. single. thing. Nope. I hung on to the end because I just wanted to know if he is a cheater… thanks for the ambiguity. Maybe the nanny should get her own book. She was the best 5 minutes!
Thank you NetGalley, Macmillan Audio, and author Justine Sullivan for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This is my first DNF of the year. I made it to 65% in and realized I really didn’t care what happened in the end. This was a mind numbing, torturously slow read. It was marketed as a thriller, and man was that a big disservice to this book. There is no action, no real suspense. Just the daily life of a woman who complains that her days run together because they are so monotonous. If your main character is ridiculously bored with her life, I’m not going to want to read about her day to day life 🤷🏼♀️ I disliked every single character in this book, so that didn’t help either.
Liz Bennett is a new mom, and has the life that everyone seems to want. She’s married to a handsome man who works hard and makes all the money they could ever need, plus some. Yes he works late hours, but he does it all for their family. Liz feels overwhelmed taking care of their daughter, and is avoiding calls from her agent about the second novel she promised her months ago. The solution they came up with was to hire a nanny. But that just gave her more time to obsess over a text message she saw on her husband’s phone.
This book was marked as a thriller and it was anything but! Liz Bennet is sees a flirty text from her husband's coworker on his phone and is convinced he's having an affair. I kept waiting for the shoe to drop, but all I got was a paranoid, obsessive stalker vibe. The ending was so underwhelming and I was left feeling like I wished I could get my time back. Definitely do not recommend if you're actually looking to read a thriller.
Thanks to NetGalley and publishers for an advanced audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
I received this as an audio galley to listen to for free in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for giving me access.
Regrettably, I didn't love this book. It wasn't so much a thriller, but more of a wife just trying to catch her husband cheating. There was no suspense for me, which is unfortunate. As for the story, Sullivan did do a good job of composing Liz's experience and for that, I will round up to 4 stars.
3.5 stars- I think I was expecting some crazy marriage thriller and this was more slow-paced. I would not call it an unreliable narrator but you are definitely questioning Liz's thoughts and since we live in her head, it was a lot. But we have all had those gut feelings that don't go away.
The ending was worth the wait.
The audio was excellent and I would recommend it.
I found this audiobook to be pretty boring and long. Almost nothing happens the whole book. The ending was a very slight twist, but nothing major, and the rest of the book was just uneventful and uninteresting. I definitely wouldn’t call this book suspense, thriller, fast paced, psychological, or any of those catch phrases that imply action and a quick series of intriguing events. The characters were all pretty unlikeable as well. The most interesting part of this book was the beautiful cover artwork, but sadly the intrigue stopped there for me. I can’t say I’d recommend this book.
I received an advance copy of this audiobook from NetGalley for my honest review. I hate giving poor ratings, but sadly this one missed the mark.
Omg! I’m flabbergasted by the huge twist I never saw coming at the end! The twist was revealed and it just ended! I’d love to talk to #JustineSullivan about it! This #debut is so so good! I flew through it! Narration by Kelli Tager was absolutely perfect for Liz!!!!
Thank you, Justine Sullivan, Macmillan Audio, Henry Holt Books & Netgalley for my advance #audiobook! All opinions are my own!
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for this audiobook in exchange for my honest review.
I really enjoyed listening to the narrator, Kelli Tager. She did an excellent job in capturing Liz's character. I enjoyed the themes of infidelity and motherhood. Liz's thoughts were a bit all over the place, but that made her such a realistic character. I could relate to her in the sense that your mind and thoughts are constantly questioning everything as a first time Mom. At times she had me wondering if some conversations with her husband, Arno, were real or just in her head.
A fast-paced audiobook that kept my attention throughout. I loved the twists, I thought this one was more domestic drama rather than psychological thriller.
Highly recommend!
This book was ok but I had a hard time getting into it. And I hated the main character - woman use your fucking words and quit whining!! I am not sure if this book was a me problem or a book problem but it was not my favorite book.
2.5 stars rounded down. This book was difficult to get through, mainly because the main character, Liz, is so incredibly unlikable. She hates her baby, is rude to virtually everyone, and judges everyone based on superficial things, mostly their looks. I found myself hoping that her husband was not only cheating, but that he would leave her and take that poor baby with him. Speaking of the baby--she is supposed to be 13 months old but her vocabulary and behavior don't match that of a 13 month old. 13 month olds cannot be reasoned with. You can't tell a baby that age that you're not coming in unless they use an appropriate tone of voice or whatever ridiculous thing the nanny said. Then there were inconsistencies. She tells her mom she wants to make dinner for a guy she is seeing. Mom asks his name. She says "how do you know it's a he"...you just said so....ugh. Anyways, this one was frustrating. That said, I stayed relatively engaged and the writing style wasn't bad. I can't say I will recommend this one, but I would give her another shot in the future.
This book sucked me right in. I did not want to stop listening. The story was engaging and kept me guessing. I really enjoyed it. My one criticism would be that the ending was a little disappointing, but overall a solid book, great narrator and fast read/listen.
