This is the kind of book that makes you laugh out loud, all of David Rosenfelt's books make you have to hold in your laughter so you aren't that crazy person laughing hysterically at a book!
Andy Carpenter is a lawyer you want if you get charged with murder. And on top of my list for summer reads!
When a book is exceptionally good, one you look forward to every time, you hate to see it end. Such was the case with "Flop Dead Gorgeous", by David Rosenfelt. Independently wealthy, lawyer Andy Carpenter works hard to avoid working. This time, however, it's personal. The accused, movie star Jenny Nichols who, as Andy frequently reminds us, is someone he dated (briefly) in high school. She also adopted a mini-poodle, now called Mamie from the Tara Foundation, so there's no question Andy will be involved. With him comes his usual team, wife Laurie, Marcus Clark, ex-cop Corey and his retired police dog Simon, and Sam, who is the ultimate master of computers. All are fully fleshed out, even the dogs. Even Edna, Andy's adverse-to-work office clerk/secretary, gets some quality time.
I won't detail the plot, the publisher's blurb does an excellent job, and simply tell you to sit back and enjoy the ride. As usual, the book's opening scene seems to have no connections to anything....until it does. From there on it's a roller coaster of fun gatherings and some not so fun encounters as Andy does a deep dive into the investigation. Let's just say, Laurie's good but he's lucky to have Superman in disguise, er, Marcus, at watching his back.
The FBI, hired killers, cyber crimes, foreign spies, and, well, lots more are involved. Through it all, Andy retains his snarky sense of humor and walks the dogs, although I will note that he isn't pretending to be a tough, brave guy this go-round. Probably wise. Marcus is tough enough for all of them, and Laurie and Corey are by no means slouches. Andy and Laurie are just glad son Ricky is away on a school trip through the worst of the danger.
Bottom line, if you love courtroom/detective mysteries with an ample helping of humor, great characters, and some Hollywood glamour (Andy says to remind you he once dated Jenny), and dogs, you'll enjoy this one. Just be prepared for that conflicting urge to both draw out the fun while wanting get to the bottom of it all at the end. The entire series is that good and this one had a surprising twist at the end, at least one I wasn't expecting.
Thanks #NetGalley and #StMartinsPress - #MinotaurBooks for letting me catch up with Andy's never dull world. The glittery Hollywood touch was an extra plus. Guess Rosenfelt was recalling his own movie making days.
I absolutely adore this series and have been reading them forever! This book was a wonderful addition to the series! I can't wait to see what happens in the next book!
I just reviewed Flop Dead Gorgeous by David Rosenfelt. #NetGalley

Whenever I am reading on my Kindle and my husband hears me laugh out loud, his immediate reaction is “Oh, did you get a new Andy Carpenter book?” And yes, that is generally the case.
This is #27 in the Andy Carpenter crime/legal procedural series that is somewhat formulaic, but always entertaining.
Andy is a very successful criminal defense attorney in Paterson, New Jersey, who only works when he gets roped into it, usually because a dog is somehow involved and Andy has a soft spot for dogs. Laurie, an ex-cop, is his wife. Laurie has now teamed up with a recently retired policeman from the Paterson force, Corey Douglas; his K-9 partner, Simon Garfunkel; and Marcus Clark, Laurie’s muscle, to form a private investigating team called the K Team. Because Andy’s clients are usually indicted for murder, and Andy has to find out who really did the killing in order to exonerate his client, the K Team always work with him on his cases.
Andy and his wife Laurie have become friends with a girl Andy dated a few times in high school, Jenny Nichols. She is now a famous actress, but returns to the Paterson, New Jersey area occasionally. This time, Jenny is having dinner out with Andy, Laurie, and a few other couples including K Team members (except for Simon Garfunkel). In the middle of the meal, Jenny’s co-star, Ryan Griffin, crashes the dinner and insists Jenny leave with him. Jenny refuses, and Laurie and Marcus convince the two goons accompanying Griffin that they should all leave.
Later that night, however, Griffin is found dead - in Jenny’s kitchen no less - from a knife wound in the back. Jenny calls Andy to defend her.
As the investigation proceeds, Andy uncovers a convoluted plot of corruption and money laundering and of course also has his own life threatened. As usual, he is saved by his much braver wife Laurie and Laurie’s muscle Marcus. But can Andy save Jenny? It’s up to the jury, and the prospects don’t look good.
Evaluation: I look forward to new entries in this series, which, by the way, you don’t really need to read in the order they were written. Andy’s sarcasm and wit are unfailingly entertaining, as are his relationships with the rest of his team. I also appreciate the way he presents legal principles and complicated crimes in a way even I can follow. For a quick, diverting read that challenges you at the same time, you can’t go wrong with David Rosenfelt’s Andy Carpenter series.
I want everyone to know Flop Dead Gorgeous is another irresistible addition to the Andy Carpenter series. David Rosenfelt is not only prolific, he's very entertaining. What do you do if you're presented with a case you can't win? That's the challenge for Andy and his super team in this one. It's an investigation which takes Andy from coast-to-coast as he tries to find a way to keep his celebrity client out of prison. Of course, Rosenfelt makes things difficult for Andy with the newest member of his rogues' gallery. The "big bad" in this one is someone you don't want to see coming your way. Will justice prevail? Will the truth win out? Will Andy be removed from the Christmas card list of another judge? I'm not telling. You'll thank me for that after you read Flop Dead Gorgeous. You know you will. Thank you to St. Martin's Press, Minotaur Books, & NetGalley for the advance reading copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
Andy is one of my favorite characters in this series, I just love his sense of humor! This is another interesting and well done mystery! I found it interesting and entertaining, and the ending WOW! I would highly recommend this book to everyone!!
With an old girlfriend from high school in town, Andy invites his friends to a private dinner to meet Jenny Nichols, who is now a famous actress. When Jenny is the prime suspect in killing her co-star, who happens to also be an ex boyfriend, With Andy and the team’s full belief in Jenny’s innocence, the question is how they can prove it and get a jury to find her innocent. It’s a big c challenge but Andy and the team are up for it, for better or worse.
This series is a taste of home for me. I grew up in New Jersey and the snarky, sarcasm is a language of it’s own that I am fluent in…and I love every single sentence of it! If you love dogs, mystery and a good whodunit, this is a series for you. I consider Andy Carpenter to be the male equivalent of Stephanie Plum and my Jersey Girl roots sing each time I read a new entry in this series!
David Rosenfelt’s Andy Carpenter series never disappoints. This time his case hinges on a movie star, his high school crush Jenny Nichols. Jenny discovered the body of her ex-lover and current co-star Ryan Griffin in the house where she was staying during the filming of the movie. Nothing obvious can exonerate her, and she is charged with his murder. Enter Andy and his intrepid team of sleuths, hackers, enforcers and of course dogs to work to find the true killer. Things get dicey when Andy finds ample evidence that Griffin was a drug user and involved with some dangerous criminals, but he’s hard pressed to prove they murdered him. There are numerous twists and turns to reach the conclusion, but they’re all so entertaining and clever that you absolutely have to see it through. This one’s a keeper.
Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martins Press for providing this arc in exchange for an honest review.
An actress that Andy Carpenter briefly dated in high school is accused of murder of her ex and costar. Andy takes the case and engages his usual cast of characters.
I like this series. Andy is funny. He is over the top about his love for dogs. The rest of the cast is comical. Always a dependable mystery and a quick read. Looking forward to Andy’s next case.
Thank you for the opportunity to preview Flop Dead Gorgeous. Andy Carpenter is back and he is defending a high school sweetheart. Lol. Andy is one of the most humorous characters in literature
Another great mystery with plenty of laughs because Andy is funny. Really funny.
The typical cast of characters are in this novel as they try to solve a murder of an actor and producer found murdered in Andy’s high school friends kitchen. Andy knows she’s innocent but he has to prove it and this is another tough case.
Enjoyed this one and highly recommend! 5 stars
I thought this book is a little slow. It’s frustrating when they get to trial but have no idea who did the murder. I did know who it was by the middle of the book. There is lots of suspense in the story. #FlopDeadGorgeous #NetGalley
David Rosenfelt has a special knack for writing the perfect blend of humor, suspense, and legal drama in his Andy Carpenter series. Flop Dead Gorgeous does not disappoint. This time around, Andy is called on to defend Jenny Nichols, a Hollywood starlet he dated very briefly in high school. Jenny is accused of…wait for it…murder. The regular team as well as the K-team are there to try to figure out what really happened. From Hollywood to the hi-tech world of streaming to Russian billionaires, Andy and his team are on the case. This is one of the few Andy Carpenter books I read on Kindle versus listening to on audiobook and damn, if I don’t still hear Grover Gardner’s voice when I read the words. Either method is equally effective in the case of Andy Carpenter. This was a totally enjoyable read, one that I was sad to finish because it means I have to wait again for the next one. Thank you NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for my impartial review.
Flop Dead Gorgeous is the latest in the series of Andy Carpenter novels by David Rosenfelt and is one of his best. It is always interesting to see the different methods used to get Andy, a retired lawyer, to take on another case in which he believes his client to be innocent of the murder at the center of the story. All the usual characters and dogs are on hand along with the humor and sarcastic wit we have come to expect from Andy. The book is well written and has a few surprises in store for the reader along the way to a satisfying conclusion..
This book is highly recommended to all readers who enjoy this genre and I thank NetGalley and Thomas and Mercer for the opportunity to read this fun novel prior to its publication.
I enjoy this book The cases are interesting it was set around the entertainment industry and I like books with dogs in them. Thanks to NetGalley for the change to read this book
I’m always super excited when there’s a new Andy Carpenter book coming out. This time there’s an old high school girlfriend and her French poodle. Of course there is a murder and Andy and the gang have to come to the rescue. Loved this book and hope there’s more in the future.
Flop Dead Gorgeous is another good addition to the David Rosenfelt collection.
Retired lawyer Andy Carpenter remembers every dog that's come through the Tara Foundation's doors, but the most well-known alum of the dog rescue organization that Andy founded in Paterson, New Jersey, may be Mamie. Adopted by famous actress Jenny Nichols—Andy's high school girlfriend—the miniature French poodle is now practically a starlet in her own right.
After Andy has dinner with Jenny, the next day, Jenny's costar is found dead, a knife in his back. It's not long before Jenny is arrested for the murder and needs Andy's legal services.
I read this one fairly quickly, as it's such a good story. I enjoy reading this author's book, and they continue to be fresh and entertaining. I would love to read more about the dogs and have them feature more prominently in the storylines, but overall, a really good story and book to read.
I would recommend this book and this author. These are fun books to read, and I enjoy the author's writing style. The books are engaging and entertaining.

It's always a reason for rejoicing when Andy Carpenter is back to narrate yet another entertaining legal mystery. In #27, Flop Dead Gorgeous, Andy's (very briefly) high school girlfriend Jenny is now on top of the world as a popular movie actress, looking forward to starring in a new film. If only her possessive ex and costar, Griffin, weren't found dead in her kitchen with her knife in his back! Defense attorney Andy agrees to take on Jenny's case, even though it often seems hopeless. In the process, we also learn a lot about wealthy Griffin's involvement in the production side of filmmaking, including some some scurrilous schemes that could have led to his death. But although Andy and his team are relentless in their investigation, and though some of their methods are--shall we say--outside the law, they don't seem to be making progress in a timely manner.
Any of the 27 books in the series can be read without reading the rest. Here's all you need to know. Andy is independently wealthy due to an inheritance. He is, therefore, reluctant to get involved in a new case, preferring to spend time with his family and his dog rescue organization, but always relents when it involves someone he loves or respects. His engaging team includes his intrepid police officer-turned-PI wife, Laurie, and bodyguard/ investigator extraordinaire Marcus, to mention just two. Andy is definitely NOT beloved of prosecutors and most judges because of his shenanigans and his ever-present snark, making the courtroom scenes especially fun to read. I've read and enjoyed every one of the books in this series, and I will continue to read anything David Rosenfelt writes.
My thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press, Minotaur Books for the opportunity to read and write an honest review of this book.
4.5 stars
It's always a delight to read an Andy Carpenter mystery! This is book 27 in the series and although you can read it as a stand-alone I would highly recommend reading them all.
My only complaint is that I wish there was a little more with the dogs.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from St. Martin's Press through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you, St. Martin's Press!
