This book is magnificent! Seriously one of the best romances I have ever read. James, the Duke of Wulverton, has been missing for `10 years - lost in the wilds of the Yukon - when he is finally found. He has spent all that time alone and fighting for survival. His family now needs him to quickly step back into his role as Duke and marry quickly so his mother hires psychologist Dr. Southby and his son, Jules, to work with James on reintegration into society. What Dr. Southby doesn't know is that Jules isn't his son....but his daughter.
Jules has lived her whole life as a man due to a decision by her mother. The secret has been well kept from everyone, even her family, until she meets James. He sees right through her. There is so much I loved about this romance. The ways that they connect over their sense of loneliness and separation from society are great. They instantly bond and the chemistry is great. The story is written so smartly that it's so hard to see how they will ever make it work in the end and so I was riveted the entire time. I loved James and his "wildness" and Jules and her strength and smarts. There's a secret hideout, shared private conversations, and forbidden romance. There's a hero who hates everyone but her. And there's a beautiful friendship that turns into so much more. It's so hard to put into words why I loved this so much so I'll just say...read it. I cannot recommend this one enough. I love that Stacy Reid is not afraid to write stories that are different and go that extra mile and she makes it work. She is a must read author for me and this book one I will be sure to revisit in the future.
James Winters, Duke of Wolverton, has returned from the dead. Ten years ago he disappeared in the Yukon Territory. Living away from humans he needs help to be accepted into society as the duke. Jules Southby assists her father in his capacity as a psychologist having studied psychology at the University of Leipzig. A decision at birth put her in a life living as a young man. Jules and her father are hired to observe and help James adjust to his new life. The moment he meets Jules, his acute senses are very aware she is a woman. As she helps him adjust to a life around people, she is bewitched by the man he has become. Can she give up freedom for love? An emotional journey with passion and some despair. Get totally caught up in this excellent read!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
When I read the synopsis, all I could think was that it was going to be some kind of Tarzan-like story with an interesting twist on Jane included. I could not have been more wrong. This story was an absolute original, and I loved every moment.
James Winters, the Duke of Wulverton, was lost in the northern Canadian wilderness when he was 18 and after 10 years has been reunited with his family in England. Jules Southby has been living a lie her entire life thanks to her father's insistence on having a son. Both of them are hiding deeper, more complex desires but don't know how to express them without causing irreparable harm to their families. To see them discover the truth about one another, while keeping each other's secrets, is truly a delight.
The writing is what you would expect from Stacy Reid - snappy and completely on point; the dialogue is at times moving and at other times delightfully humorous.
I enjoyed meeting these characters, especially as they begin to grow and learn to accept they can no longer deny the missing parts of their souls. The story was intriguing, and I definitely recommend it to anyone who loves a good romance.
This book was bananas! The premise was so different and interesting. Stacy Reid really took time to develop the relationship between the hero and the heroine, definitely some swoony moments. The story was well paced and the characters were interesting, chemistry was well done. Overall a good time
A mark of a great romance author IMO, is when you're presented with a bonkers plot but it.just.works. It worked! It more than worked because I enjoyed the heck out of it.
I will read anything Stacy writes and boy did she deliver. Jules and James' romance was just so wonderful AND sweet AND swoony AND sexy AND just everything. I took 0.5stars off for some minor issues namely being that James gave off some fae man energy but this book was a delight! I can't wait for more of Stacy's releases!
*I received an ARC from Netgalley*
I'm sad to say this book just wasn't for me. The plot seemed interesting and it was certainly well-written but after a while my interest began to wane. I usually have no issue suspending disbelief but in this case I had a hard time doing so.
Jules has been living as a man since birth after her mother lied to her father about having a son. While Jules does appreciate the opportunities she has been granted because of this I had a difficult time accepting that her and her mother have successfully carried this ruse on for 23 years without anyone suspecting otherwise.
I honestly think I would have enjoyed this more had it been marketed as fantasy. James' habit of constantly smelling Jules was distracting and while I realize he survived in the Yukon wilderness for 10 years, his heightened sense of smell and ability to hear her heartbeat was a bit too hard to believe.
A girl who was raised a man and a man who was lost in the wilderness. It was a very unique experience in a book. Mrs. Reid knows how to keep a reader hooked. It was a sweet and lovely book with a different view on how woman supposed to be in that time period and how men were expected to act also. I love this book and I can't wait until the next book.
I adored James and Jules' story!! I was so enthralled in watching Jules come to know James and how she helped him to open up to others!
4 5 rounded up
This was a right book at the right time for me. I absolutely loved the story and passion of this couple. It was a unique plot for a regency romance. They had a different kind of banter than what I usually prefer but I loved the nickname and how they bonded through their secrets. It was steamy and just hit all my favorite aspects of a romance. I couldn’t put it down.
Thank you @entangled_publishing and @netgalley for the gifted copy.
Love is the compelling reason behind life.
A bonkers story is somehow so beautiful and filled with deep, real love.
This book. THIS BOOK. Everything about this book is the definition of bonkers when viewed from the outside. However, when you get into it, this is a book with characters and a love that ring so true.
I adore both our MCs. Jules has such a crazy story (and, IMO, such a crazy mother). Yet she has overcome with joy and strength. She is forthright and motivated by true caring for people. James is so powerful and yet so weak when it comes to his love for Jules. The contrast of a man who has lived in a wilderness for 10 years and the constraints of the haut ton is fascinating.
As a couple they are so sweet and genuine. I could read ten more books about these two. If you can’t tell, I love them!
My only complaint is the dialog sometimes felt a little stiff. This is my first Stacey Reid read, so it is possible this is on purpose and the dialog is like this because our hero has been away from human contact for so long. Other than that the writing is phenomenal, very lyrical.
Definitely check CW for this one, but other than that I say hurry up and read it!
Tropes: Insta lust, forbidden
CW: Homophobia, trauma, bullying, mental illness/PTSD, toxic relationship
I received an ARC of this book. All opinions are mine.
I am a huge fan of Stacy Reid and am always excited when she comes out with something new.
This is one of the most unique historical romances I have ever read.
'The Wolf' is a Duke that was lost in the Canadian wilderness for a decade and was recently rescued; he's largely nonverbal, hasn't cut his long hair, still lives largely in the woods behind his estate, and needs to prove his sanity to the Queen so that his title does not pass to a cousin.
'The Wildflower' is a trained psychologist; a woman who has lived the entirety of her life as a man, a decision made by her mother so as not to disappoint her father; she's stifled in her life but still enjoys her work, and for the first time, is intrigued and attracted to another individual as a woman.
Stacy Reid is SUCH a compelling author and although this story was quite complex and could have gotten much more complicated, she kept it quite short and sweet without compromising too much of the characters and their journeys.
I just loved this story, especially the characters of Jules and James. I did feel sorry for them both, though. Just imagining how James felt after being alone for all those years, then to be faced with a room full of twittering relatives, would drive anyone crazy. How selfish were Jules’ parents! They hadn’t thought beyond their own needs.I enjoyed the connection between James and Jules, how they quickly they understood each other and what they both needed. There are some passion scenes, times that made me smile and heartfelt moments that brought a tear to my eye. I wasn’t sure what the solution would be but I was routing for them to find a happy ending. This was an enthralling read with a satisfying epilogue. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I loved this book so much and I was sad as it came to an end. What I loved the most was how different this book was from the typical historicals. They take their time getting to know each other and when they finally give in to their desires, we get some very passionate scenes.
James Winters, the Duke of Wulverton, has returned home after he was lost at sea a decade ago. He survived the wilderness of Alaska and now London is buzzing with wild rumors. His mother is worried the gossip will doubt his ability to continue as the duke.
Jules Southby has returned home after a few years away as he pursued his studies. It also helped aid in the secret life she's been living. When she was born, her mother kept her gender a secret. But the ruse went on longer than intended.
Upon their first meeting, James is able to see who Jules really is through her disguise. Both feel this unexplainable attraction to one another. But both understand that nothing can ever come from this attraction.
Thank you so much to the author, Entangled and NetGalley for this ARC to review.
I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is the start of a new series by Stacy Reid. I have read others by him and decided to give it a shot. This was definitely not what I was expecting. You have a mom that asks her daughter to do crazy things to keep the father from finding out. I was not happy about that at all. Then the way the relationship grows between the two main characters is a little weird. It worked out but the definitely a different read.
This is one incredible read! This unique and original story is very heartwarming, emotional and sensual. Lost in the icy mountains of Canada for ten years, James, the Duke of Wulverton, is miraculously found alive. He is withdrawn and doesn’t allow for contact with others. His mother seeks the help of a mind doctor (psychologist) and his assistant son, Jules. But Jules has a secret of his own, and after twenty -three years of masquerading as a man, James’ intense sense of smell can tell that Jules is a woman in a matter of minutes. She becomes his “Wildflower “ and an incredible bond develops between them, which grows into a passionate love, one neither has ever known. This is such a beautiful story of love and acceptance.
The Wolf and the Wildflower was a charming historical romance! Jules Southby had lived her life as a lie. For the past 24 years, the world thought that she was a man. Her mother did it out of self-preservation, since her father wanted a boy. Yet Jules seemed happy with furthering her education and working in the psychology field. Two things that were not allowed for women back then. When Jules and her father were hired to help James Winters become refined within three weeks, they thought they were taking on an intriguing case. Yet Jules and James didn't realize that from the moment they met, both of their lives would be changed forever.
“Were you not alone, Your Grace?”
Painfully so. Yet James would never admit that. Instead, he murmured, “I had the ice-capped mountains and the trees. At other times I had wolves and bears. I had nature and the call of the wild. Those were enough.”
James Leopold Winters, the Duke of Wulverton, and the Earl of Lydon was 18 years old when he was lost in the wild. For the last 10 years he had struggled to survive. Alone, in a freezing environment and with danger at every turn. Now that he was back with his family, he still felt all alone. His family treated him like he was a savage and at times talked around him as if he wasn't even there. It was as though he was an animal in the zoo and they were studying him. They struggled that James didn't want to be touched and refused to talk about what he went through when he was gone. But James was loyal and didn't want to make his mom unhappy, so he agreed to see a doctor of the mind.
Wildflower ? Jules’s heart shook, and she lowered her head to hide her expression. “Is this to be my new moniker, Your Grace?”
“It suits.”
Do not ask, it is unimportant.
My heart hurt for Jules. When Jules had mentioned in the past about living as a girl, her mother begged her not to and to keep up the lie. Yet at the same point, she was terrified that if she did announce she was a girl that her father wouldn't want to share his studies with her anymore. Ironically from the moment that James met Jules, he was the first who could see through her disguise. And they struck a deal to keep one another's secrets. From that first meeting I could see that they were kindred souls and they were both so alone. As they spent time around each other, I loved watching when Jules was able to get through to James with her insight and knowledge. It felt monumental! She was so brilliant and I loved how she explained things to him. As time went by, they both shared things about themselves that no one else knew. And whenever James did that, it felt like he was giving little pieces of himself to Jules. It was impossible not to fall for him!
James turned away from her and started walking. A feeling he did not understand hooked into him, and he paused. “Run with me, Wildflower?”
“Yes,” she said softly.
The banter between Jules and James was fabulous! It was much needed with the heaviness in the air about both of their lives. Jules living a lie and James' gut wrenching past. It hurt that they both tried to shove down love. But when they were around each other, it felt like they were being given a fresh start. So I loved that he called her Wildflower and why that word was important to him. I loved how patient, kind and thoughtful James could be with Jules. And when they did become more, their moments together were racy, steamy and sooo hot! Alternating between the two of them gave us the best of both worlds and I loved hearing their different thoughts. Especially during their intimate moments. Yet I do need to mention that this story took quite a few times of suspending ones belief. I thought if I could read about vampires and werewolves, I didn't see why I would struggle here and I was so right!
“What are you thinking now, James?”
“That I want my Wildflower to touch me and that perhaps I wish to touch her as well. Skin to skin, without any gloves on our hands.”
Jules’s heart stuttered inside her chest. His wildflower?
Joy and heartache were laced through the pages making The Wolf and the Wildflower so easy to devour. The story was filled with secrets, jealousy, friendship, love and so much heart! And James and Jules story ended with a wonderful epilogue, with a peak into the future. Now I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that James' younger sister gets her own book hopefully. She seemed completely fascinating to me!
I am a total fan of Stacey' Reid's writing. This book did not disappoint. It was totally different from any other regency romance I have read. In a genre in which many of the storylines are the same, it was nice to read something refreshing.
This story is loosely based on the story of Tarzan. The Duke, Jane's, has been lost in the wilderness of Canada for 10 years. He is found alive and is returned to his family. Having trouble readjusting to society, his mother brings in a doctor of the mind to try to help him. The doctor brings his "son" Jules with him to help.
But here is the twist, Jules is not a he but a she. But no one knows this other than her mother.
Until the Duke. He has learned to fine tune his sense of smell and can differentiate between male and female. He is intrigued by the disguise and wants to find out more. So he decides to work with the son but not the father. Jules realized what the Duke has discovered and realizes that she can be herself with him to some extent.
This leads to many adventures and discoveries.
I enjoyed the book. Honestly, when I read the blub, I thought it sounded crazy and that I would dislike it. But again, Stacey Reid, I couldn't put it down. Give it a chance. I know I'm glad I did.

I want to thank Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book.
James Winters, Duke of Wulverton, has return to England after being lost in the Yukon Wilds for ten years. It goes without saying, he has some readjustment to make. Jules Southby has lived as a man her whole life. Her mother’s deception was not supposed to last so long, but plans do go awry. She accompanies her father to help James become reacquainted with the ways of Society. When they meet, it doesn’t take long for James to see through her disguise, although it is a good one. I really enjoyed this story. It does take some suspension of disbelief, but it is a great story. James and Jules may be the oddest couple I have read, with the exception of paranormal stories. Following their antics as they find their way is fun. There are some twists and turns, and definitely a surprise or two. Interesting read!
I received an ARC of this book of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and am voluntarily reviewing it.
Let's all HOWL for The Wolf and the Wildflower - what a unique regency read. A man lost in the wilds for 10 years and a women who's dressed like a man for her whole life fall in love WHAT?!?! Now I have to read this book.
Reid continues to be one of favorite regency authors. I read this book in one day. I definitely need to read more of this authors backlist.
Thank you Entangled Publishing for the advance reader copy.
This is one of the most powerful and moving love stories I have ever read! To some the set up might seem ridiculous and improbable but I bought into it and was sucked into the story. The wolf is a Duke who's been lost in the Yukon for 10 years since the age of 18. He was found by accident by a mining party and brought home to Victorian England. The Wildflower is a 23 year old woman who has been living as a man since birth. She's just returned from University in Austria and hopes to join her father's psychology practice. When her father is asked to come help the Duke of Wulverton learn to live in a civilized manner and return to functioning as the Duke, Jules accompanies him.
Jules Southby is a 23 year old woman who's lived her whole life as a male. Her mother almost died giving birth to her and her father was desperate for a son. When he mistakes Jules after her birth as his son, the midwife and his wife don't correct him. Mrs. Southby knows he will keep trying for a son and she needs time to heal and recover. It was meant to be a temporary deception but the truth never came out. As Jules grew she became aware of the advantages and freedoms being male gave her and they continued the deception. When she meets James Winters, the Duke, he instantly sees through her disguise and recognizes that she's female. This starts an entry point to aid James into reshaping and reacquainting himself with society. He and Jules form a strong bond.
James Winters is 28 and has been lost in the Yukon for 1o years. He has habits and coping mechanisms he developed to survive the wild and harsh environment but are not acceptable behavior for a powerful Duke. His mother the Duchess is concerned he's feral and she needs him to be presented to the queen and society in three and a half weeks at her annual ball. She enlists Charles Southby and his son Jules to come to their Hertfordshire Estate and assess and help her son. When they meet he sees through his senses, that are much more sensitive than normal because of his ordeal.
As Jules and James spend more time together their friendship becomes more and causes both in the end to see they cannot have a relationship that's acceptable in society . They know that he must marry. I found myself wondering how this was going to be resolved and it broke my heart when they separated. You'll have to see how they got their happily ever after. It's worth it believe me!
