I enjoyed this book and I could not put it down. I really enjoyed the characters and the writing was really well done. It made you want to keep reading.
as a flight attendant myself, the first few chapters of this (where all the shit goes down) had me QUAKING in my boots. I enjoyed Newman's first book, and this one seems to be even more liked generally, but i think i actually didn't quite enjoy it as much as Falling. the scenes inside the aircraft were tense and well done, but i didn't realize so much of the book would be about the rescue team and i didn't really care for those parts of the story.
There is nothing like a plane crash book to keep me up at night! I love this author’s style of writing and I adored the characters in this novel as I did her first.
This was a thrilling read right out of the gate. Once you get over the horror of a plane crash, this story is about a group of strangers coming together to try and solve a seemingly impossible problem. It is a well written story filled with the best and worst of human behavior.
I look forward to reading more by this author.
Thank you to T.J. Newman, Netgalley and Avid Reader Press / Simon & Schuster for the opportunity to read and review this story.
Omg I feel like I can finally breathe…..
This one was SO intense, I felt like I was down there with them. Such a suspenseful and interesting read, it kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the whole book!!
Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my GOD.
It has been a long old time since I've read a book where I felt genuine anxiety and panic whilst reading. Lemme tell you, this one certainly delivers. It is fast paced, gripping and emotional. I could not put this book down, a solid five stars.
I’m pretty baffled at Newman’s expansive subject writing. I know she was a flight attendant but adding underwater welding and engineering to her writing was not what I had expected. Getting past the original tragedy in the first moments of the book took a little bit for me. I had to revisit and push through knowing the good part was past the initial “flight anxiety” I hold. I’m glad I did. It was a book of differing characters with some real heart.
Drowning by T.J. Newman
I loved T. J. Newman's first novel, Falling. I was so immersed into it and read it in a day. I expected Drowning to be the same but it sadly wasn't. Though I did love the story, I started it just before/during the whole Titan going down to the Titanic thing. It was erie! So though it didn't live up to Falling to me, I still really thought the story was clever and it did keep my interested. It did not make me scared to fly either ;) I do look forward to T.J.'s next book!
This was a great follow-up to Falling. The time pressure created brilliant tension and the characters were engaging. However I felt it lacked plot to make it as pulse-pounding as ‘Falling’.
After reading the debut, Falling, I thought for sure the author wouldn’t be able to top it - boy was I wrong! Drowning is even better if you can believe it!?! This book was so intense, at one point I had to walk away from it and do something else for awhile. From beginning to end this book delivers a non stop, adrenaline fueled, suspenseful story and I can’t wait for the next one!
I thank Netgalley and Avid Reader Press for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This was FANTASTIC!!!! Someone below said there is talk about this becoming a movie stapppp I will be absolutely watching it if it does. I was HOOKED literally 5 pages in, her writing ability and how captivating this story was I found myself constantly rooting for Chris, Will and Shannon. This literally had me on the edge of my seat and I plowed this in a couple of hours. 10/10 I’m so excited to find a new author, you have a new fan!!! Thank you to NetGalley sending me a copy of this book to read.
Drowning by T.J. Newman was hold on to the edge of your seat, have to finish this book in one sitting good. I loved it. Well done 👏🏻 I discovered T.J. Newman through her first book and thought that her experience being a flight attendant makes her writing and story telling so believing. I feel like maybe I could survive a plane crash now??
I read Falling and absolutely loved it. I finished it in a couple hours so I was so excited to get an ARC of Drowning.
Drowning starts with the engine of Flight 1421 failing as they crash into the ocean.
I enjoyed this book a lot and also flew through it but the pages and pages of technical jargon were a lot for me. I understand the need to describe the technology that will save the passengers but it seemed to just go on and on.
Still looking forward to reading more from this author.
I received this ARC from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review..
Although this is not a book you want to read if you have a flight coming up, the suspense will have you turning the pages rapidly. This will make a great movie, action packed, good characters, and thrills, 4.5 stars

I requested a digital advanced readers copy from NetGalley and Simon & Schuster and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.
My Thoughts: This novel completely blew my mind. This not your typical killer thriller, but nonetheless, it is definitely a thriller! Flight 1421 crashes into the ocean and while people are exiting out on the slider, referred to as “ditching,” an engine explodes, and the fire begins making everyone outside of plane in trouble. Out of the 95 passengers, around a dozen remain on board as the airplane acts as a submarine, kind of. There are great air pockets where they can breathe, however, the air inside is compromised and they only have a few hours of oxygen inside the plane. When you think things are very bad and could not get any worse, then boom. I have not read the first novel, “Falling,” but will be going back to read that one. This definitely kept me on the edge of the seat, especially towards the end, I could not put down!
The story is narrated in present time with flashbacks to the recent past. The main characters are the twelve trapped in the plane, and Chris, the soon to be ex-wife of Will and mother to Shannon, who is trapped in the plane. The other people trapped are Kit, one of the pilots; Kaholo and Molly, two of the flight attendants; Ryan, a newlywed, who lost his wife to the crash; Bernadette, a nurse; Maia, an minor who is unaccompanied; Iris and Ruth, a married couple who have been married for decades; Jasmine; and Andy, who was a jerk the entire time they were trapped. We circle back to Chris, she is on the group of rescuers, this group is the top of their game rescuers. However, this will be like no other rescue. The characters were well fleshed out with depth, are intense, a bit mysterious, and very creatively drawn. The author’s writing style was complex, multifaceted, suspenseful (to say the least), twisty, thought-provoking, and just brilliant, very brilliant. The author’s ability to balance the intense thrilling actions with the emotions of these passengers is superior. The intense tension that is built throughout the novel is top par. The story just immerse you in, makes you cry, makes you sad, and makes you happy.
I have never read a novel like this. It just hooks you from the beginning through the ending. I couldn’t wait to pick it back up and when I was not reading it, I was thinking about it. This is most intense, gripping, on the edge of seat thriller that I have read and will always think about it. While the premise is a plane crash, it devolves into so much more, love, grief, hope, determination, survival, and even second chances. The audiobook narrators were stellar, their voice variations were fantastic and just immerses you into that airplane. I highly recommend picking it up, go buy from the bookstore, or borrow from your local library.
Hold on to your seats! T.J. Newman's newest thriller "Drowning" will have you biting your nails, sweating profusely, and watching the clock continuously. Just remember to breath! Shortly after Flight 1421 has just left the Honolulu airport the airplane develops engine trouble and is unable to return to the airport. Despite the pilot's best efforts the plane makes a successful water landing and all appears to well. Most passengers are able to get to life rafts but soon realize they are still in danger. The few left on the plane realize the plane is going down so seal the plane hoping to make is air tight as possible. Will help arrive in time? Check out "Drowning" and see for yourself!
What a great book! I read this in one evening. The chapters are short and easy to read. It is heavily plot-driven while also including plenty of character development. I'm looking forward to reading what Newman writes next.
This was a good one. Starts fast and doesn't let up until the end. I liked "Falling" well enough, but thought it was a little overhyped considering all the publicity it got. Not this one. This one was on fire. I blew through it in less than a day. Some of it got a little too technical for me, but, as a visual reader, I imagined the movie that we'll inevitably see in a few years and don't think it will spoil the enjoyment for all of those people. Excited to see what comes next for the author. Will the plane motif continue?
talk about anxiety inducing, page turning, feeling literally every emotion possible! this book was a HUGE win for me. TJ Newman knows how to write a bingeable thriller, but this time around, i felt so much more emotion and was much more invested in the characters. there is a surprising family aspect to this story that brought on a lot of feelings and a LOT of tears 🥲 i don’t want to give too much away because every reader needs to experience the anxiety that this book will produce - but trust me; it will all be worth it! you will definitely catch this book on my favorites of 2023!
After reading Falling, I knew this author would be added to my auto buy list! Sometimes you just need something that you can’t put down and gives you an adrenaline rush and this definitely gave you both of those things! At some points in this book my heart was genuinely racing. What’s scarier than your plane crashing?! Now add that you’re trapped in that plane, in the ocean! This was edge of your seat, in depth characters and non stop action. Perfection!
