From the length of the subtitle on Murdle: Volume 1, “100 elementary to impossible mysteries to solve using logic, skill, and the power of deduction”, I was expecting 100 short stories like in Two-Minute Mysteries. Instead contains 100 increasingly difficult logic puzzles.
When solving logic puzzles, a grid and pencil are required to eliminate possibilities and discover the one and only solution. Because I received Murdle: Volume 1 in kindle format, it was impossible to solve any of the puzzles—making this a very disappointing read. Luckily, the published version is only available in paperback.
If you are thinking of buying this book, visit murdle.com and play the daily logic puzzle beforehand. The puzzles are the same format (but with a handy online grid). If you like it, but want more than one puzzle per day, Murdle: Volume 1 is the answer. 4 stars!
Thanks to St. Martin’s Griffin and NetGalley for a digital review copy of the book.
Fun quick book to get you thinking and wake up the brain. Hard to follow as a download but I have ordered my physical copy and I can’t wait to complete more Murdles.
This book is a lot of fun! I think that's the purpose so it definitely succeeds.
I think the one downfall for me was that the electronic version both doesn't have images and is quite hard to navigate when solving puzzles (I keep losing the bookmark for the clues and the solutions a the back!). I didn't dock any stars thought because I think as a paper book, it would be absolutely fantastic.
This book would be fun for pre-teens and teenagers and adults, which is fantastic. It would take some time to go through it (similar to a crossword or sudoku book) so I think it would be really fun as a beach read or for relaxing. I am very interested in getting a paper copy, especially for future volumes.
Whodunit?????
Do you like solving puzzles? Do you enjoy solving mysteries? Then this book is for you!
I love doing my own super sleuthing while reading so this book of crimes that need to be solved was right up my alley! Readers are given clues, a list of suspects, and must solve the crimes using logic and deductions to eliminate suspects to determine whodunit.
The puzzles go from easy to the how-am-I-ever-going-to-solve this level. So much fun!
If you are an armchair detective, enjoy playing the game clue, or figuring things out then this book will be right up your alley!
So clever!
Love the idea of Murdle (this is #1) in book format! Not only is this an ongoing emerging mystery story but also deduction puzzles (elementary, medium and hard boiled) to solve with clues such as people descriptions (right-handed, hazel eyes), locations (ancient ruins) and objects (decoder ring, piano wire). The author recommends using a grid and pencil for jotting down observations, following along with Detective Logico.
I am besotted with this new-found interest which prompted me to visit the Murdle website. The premise of the book is fantastic and it oozes wit and Clue/Agatha Christie vibes.
Though I worked through the first few puzzles on paper (with the help of hints in the back), it was challenging as the clue pictures/illustrations did not appear on Kindle format. I am dying (!) to complete the remainder in the physical version.
My sincere thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for providing me with an early digital copy of this engrossing puzzle book!
This one is really hard to do on the Kindle. I really need the physical book for this one. Puzzle books just don't work electronically for me.
Twenty-five whodunnits that kids — and their grownups — can attempt to solve. You’ll need scratch paper and a pencil. These aren’t Encyclopedia Brown-level mysteries; they’re pretty hard. Even so they’re really fun, and I’m super excited that the title says “Volume 1,” meaning there will be more! Great for exercising your brain!
In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press and St. Martin’s Griffin in exchange for an honest review.
I stumbled upon Murdle not too long ago, though I don't remember how, but I thought it was a rather unique take on the daily puzzle genre. Murdle is rather simple yet complicated, as it is a strategy game based on deduction. You are, like Clue, given a set of suspects, locations, weapons, and motivations, and then given clues that will help you start to piece together the puzzle.
This kind of puzzle comes with both pros and cons. On the positive side, it does keep you busy as you try to figure everything out. On the negative side, the puzzles are made to seem more complicated than they actually are. You aren't given much in terms of evidence, so it feels impossible to solve it, but you don't actually need to deduce much to figure it out. I personally am not a fan of that, but I am sure other people would be able to grasp it a lot easier.
As for the book itself, I do think this was a smart move on the part of the creators. That is mainly due to the reason that it allows you to physically write in the books, thus making it easier to actually deduce. When doing the puzzles online, you can scroll back and forth and write everything down on paper which is rather tedious.
I also liked the format of the book with it being organized by difficulty level and the hints and solutions being at the end. Overall, this is a fun book for people who like puzzles that aren't too complex, but I think this should be done in microdoses, as I don't think I could play multiple ones in one sitting.
This is a fun book for people who enjoy deductive reasoning puzzles, but it’s much more suited to a paper book, preferably with the typical chart for keeping track of everything. It’s also the type of book that’s going to take weeks to months to finish as people go through just a puzzle or two at a time.
This was so much fun! It was a little confusing on my kindle but, I think getting the physical copy will be worth it! This one is hugely recommended by me.
I freaking love Murdle and this encapsulates all of the daily puzzle fun in book form. They also add some elements of story to the mix with Detective Logico's past. Plus the time trial for the Elementary section? BANANAS! I definitely want a physical copy so I can try out a speed-run and the "all in the mind" challenge. They also add fun elements like the Astrological Primer, decoder ring, and even an over-arching mystery. Plus hints and quick solutions in the back, where you have to actually seek them out. Looooooove.
*Thank you to St Martin's Griffin and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review*
Move over Wordle, here come Murdle, the murder mystery solving game! Given suspects, motives, weapons, and settings, use the clues to solve the murder. Logic puzzles for the stressed or bored, Murdle is a fun way to unwind and with this collection, there's no need to wait for the next one to post. Great for the travel season!
Fun book I think might be more enjoyable in physical form. I was confused and hard to follow on kindle.
Thank you, NetGalley!
Murdle is a fun puzzle book with a bunch of different puzzles. It was a little hard to follow along on Kindle, but the printed copy will be a fun gift for your murderio in your life. It would be fun highlighting and taking notes as you read along. I will be picking up a print copy in the future.
Thank you St. Martin's Griffin and NetGalley for the eARC of Murdle! All opinions in this review are my own.
I have always loved logic puzzles and Murdle is no exception! These puzzles become more challenging as the book goes on ranging from Elementary to Impossible. It was a little difficult to read it as an ebook, I would definitely recommend the hard copy. Murdle would make a great gift for any puzzle lover!
Do you like logic puzzles? I didn't realize I did until now! I’m always game to try something different, and this book was a lot of fun. That said, it got harder with each section and I got stumped before the end of the book. There is a story as you go along in the book to tie the puzzles together, and I loved the humour!
Deductive Logico (our intrepid detective) faces a series of 100 mini-mysteries to solve. We get to help him out as he sleuths his way through:
Elementary: Fun, easy puzzles. They got me thinking but I quickly deduced I’d be able to move on to…
Occult Medium: Definitely more concentration required here, but they weren’t too hard if I paid attention. I couldn’t do them in my head, as the book suggested as a challenge. I moved through to…
Hard Boiled: Ok, I did one of these, thinking “I’ve got this.” But no, the puzzles were quite difficult and stumped me. That said, my sleuthing spouse was able to solve them! I took a look at…
Impossible: I’m going to confess: I didn’t try these as I’m not smart enough. But maybe you are!
This is a great book for whiling away the time, and it’d be great on an airplane! Also, it would be a fantastic gift book for the puzzle-lover in your life. It reminded me of the time long ago when I did the LSAT test to get into law school (which I never pursued, maybe because I’m not that great at logic puzzles!). The book is inspired by the author’s website at murdle.com, where you can sign up to solve daily puzzles. I may just do that, because it’d keep my mind sharp, something to add to my daily crossword habit.
The only thing I’d suggest about this book is to pick up/order a physical copy as it’s handy to be able to mark in the grids provided rather than print them out all the time.
Happy logic puzzle solving!
A fun take on a different kind of puzzle book. I honestly think I would enjoy this more with a physical copy instead of the e-book version. It is not very well put together to be able to read and blocky. I may give this one another chance with a physical copy once available to buy.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 STARS
Puzzles mixed with a dose of mystery makes Murdle: Volume 1 a definite winner! I enjoyed attempting to solve each puzzle—from the fairly easy ones to the most challenging. I think I would've preferred to complete the puzzles in the actual book, but I made do with using a separate notebook.
I would like to thank NetGalley and St. Martin's Press with providing me an early copy of this book. Murdle: Volume 1 by G.T. Karber is a MUST read that will join the ranks of the BIBLIO-ELITE!!!
Thank you NetGalley, St. Martin's Press and G.T. Karber for this e-arc in exchange for my honest review.
I love these types of games so this book was really fun to work through! My only "issue" was the ebook format, I think I would've enjoyed it more with a physical copy but this was still fun and will recommend it to my friends who also enjoy these types of games! 4 stars for me!
Such a fun book! I love playing the daily games online and this book was so much fun to do. I love the format of the games and how quick yet challenging they are.
