This book took me so long to read! But, I did enjoy it.
What really frustrated me is the miscommunication trope, I greatly dislike this trope and did not realize this would be their foil.
This was my first true LGBTQ+ book to read and I loved it and loved that it was a great introduction to this world.
The two main characters are so lovable and I really love it when a MC is getting over a heartbreak that clearly did not serve her and the love interest is just a white knight in shining armor.
Ari had great character development and was a good MC with depth and trust issues and just relatable all around. She was stubborn and had such a great love for her family and I really enjoyed relating to her in some ways.
I received this audio copy from Net Galley for an honest review. This book, For Her Consideration, is a queer romance that I listened to as an audiobook. The narrator was phenomenal! The main character, Nina, is scarred from a breakup 3 years ago. Words that were said made a huge impact on her, causing her to shut down from friends and love. Read this book to discover her way back.
5⭐️
Nina Rice has written everything and everyone out of her life after a horrible breakup three years earlier. She has put her dreams of writing for TV behind her but she still gets to write by managing celebrity email accounts for her talent agency job, all from her home in the LA suburbs. But everything changes one afternoon when her client, Ari Fox, wants to sit down for a meeting. Nina thinks this is the end of her career, Ari wants Nina to spend more time with her to actually sound like her in the emails Nina sends. After a dinner meeting Nina realizes the Ari has been flirting with her, and Nina’s confidence begins to blossom. Nina reconnects with her friends, starts working on her abandoned script and decides to keep her relationship with Ari a secret from her boss. What could go wrong?
For Her Consideration is single first person POV, found family, client-to-friends-to-lovers, sapphic, celebrity romance with some steamage.
I LOVED this book! I physically had to stop myself from binging it in one day. This book took so much time discussing the harm of toxic relationships and how much a previous relationship can ruin someones self-esteem and their future relationships. (Honestly, FUCK TAYLOR!!!) Amy Spaldings writing surrounding this topic, and in this whole book, was so well written. As someone that was seriously hurt from a previous relationship, it took me so long to get over it, to gain my confidence back and to be able to actually trust someone else in a relationship. Amy Spalding wrote these feelings perfectly.
You know when you’re reading a characters description and instead of picturing when the author wrote you just picture someone else in your head? Well for me I pictured Ari Fox as E.R Fightmaster. IYKYK 🌶🌶 Nina is a curvy queen and the body positivity was remarkable!! Especially in the steamy scenes!! Ari and Nina together had me giggling and kicking my feet. The secondary characters are also so much fun! Aunt Lorna (and her retirement crew) and Nina’s whole crew are so great and added an extra layer to the book.
The only thing I wasn’t a huge fan of was the third act breakup. It was… something? It honestly didn’t do anything for me and felt like it come out of nowhere, out of nothing. But the good thing that came from the third act breakup was that Nina took the time to heal herself, she went to therapy and made active changes for herself (Yay for not needed a relationship to heal oneself!). I also wasn’t a huge fan of how much Ari pushed Nina. Now I understand Ari wanted the best for Nina but she did cross some boundaries Nina specifically brought up. I would have also loved to have Ari’s POV!
I received an audiobook copy which was narrated by Sophie Amoss and she did a great job! I especially loved when Ari was saying "Nina Rice" 🥵 the narration was perfect!
Thank you NetGalley and RB Media for an advanced audio copy for an honest review.
This audiobook was so go to listen too. I loved the Narrator Sophie Amoss. She did such a great job telling their story. I absolutely fell in love with the characters . They felt like they were your friends. You could imagine spending time with them while hearing the story. I though it was such a sweet, swoon worthy, and joyful listen. I would definitely recommend this audiobook to anyone wanted a good lesbian love story. You will also get some good laugh out of this book as well. Nina and Ari will become a part of you heart.
Thank you NetGalley and RB Media, Recorded Books for allowing me to listen to this ARC for my honest opinion.
Nina Rice was broken up with in a rather brutal way, tbh, in that her ex-girlfriend gave her a list of twelve very specific reasons why she was a toxic person who would essentially ruin the lives of everyone she was close to. So Nina Rice pulled a Reputation Taylor Swift move and secluded herself in the suburbs of LA for like three years. But then she has to meet Ari Fox for work reasons and her life slowly starts to change.
Now, to be clear, For Her Consideration is absolutely a romance novel. This one hits the right beats and most importantly, ends with a happy for now/happily ever after vibe. And more importantly, this book is deeply healing in a way that I don't think I can quite articulate. But there is something about the way Nina's friends, her found family, welcome her back after her extended absence and the way they talk and heal and come back together. There's something wonderful about the presence of Nina's aunt in this book and the way she and Ari meet and the way Nina has lunch with her and her friends every Thursday. If you liked Love at First by Kate Clayborn, you absolutely need to read this book. I think you'll love it.
Oh, and I did get the chance to listen to the audiobook narration thanks to Netgalley as well. It was a single narrator for a single perspective romance and I thought the narrator did a good job. The only issue I had was that I can read faster with my eyeballs than I can listen and I was really into the story so I kept pausing the narration to read with my eyes.
It took me so long to get into this book, it's quite embarrassing.
I loved this book, so so much!
It's well written, the characters are well described and the plot is likely to happen to any group of friends (speaking of which, is there someone who wants to create a group of twenty-something queer women in Northern Italy?).
The story follows Nina (I loved her from the beginning because all the fictional Ninas I know are perfect, hi Nina Zenik!), a thirty-something lesbian, who has been in self-imposed isolation, since her ex-girlfriend Taylor told her, upon leaving her three years prior, that she is the doom of all her friends with her tardiness and self-centeredness. Through her work, she meets Ari, a rising star in queer Hollywood, and Nina ends up breaking the number one rule when working as an agent, or well, an assistant to one, in Hollywood: "Don't fuck the talent".
This relationship pushes Nina to face the "demons" of her past, reconnect with her friends, and finally, take matters into her own hands and follow the dream she came to Los Angeles with.
There is nothing I would change about his book, I truly loved it all, even the part I didn't like, such as Ari's insistence on Nina following her dream and facing her fears, was so much part of human nature and of Ari's own character, they felt just right.
I loved the family aspect, both blood and found, as Nina says near the end of the book. Lorna is an exceptional character and I aspire to be just like her at 81 years old. The found family is truly great: I loved the sense of community, of safety, they radiate throughout the book. I even enjoyed the confrontation in the end about abandonment.
The audiobook is really well made, the narrator did an amazing job!
All of this to say, please, please, please, read this book, it's that great.
This book was absolutely pure emotional magic. I loved it so much. I love the emotional journey they go on. I love the back and forth. I love the friends to lovers pipeline. (I keep giggling at this verbiage)
Every time I go to type about just how much I love this book or why I love it, I fumble over my word. Nothing seems 'right'. Nothing is good enough. This book is just so cute and perfect and I love it so so much.
Also, @sophie_amoss_vo_actor voice was just so perfect for this book! She did such a phenomenal job. She really draws you in and makes you feel EVERYTHING! such spectacular work!
Thank you Amy Spalding for such spectacular work. Now I'm off to go buy all your other audiobooks. and hopefully pre-order your 7th book!!! I'm officially a HUGE fangirl.
Thank you Sophie Amoss for your brilliant voice work! This will go down as one of my favorites of the year.
Thank you netgalley and RB books for the ARC!
Reasons to Read: For Her Consideration by Amy Spalding
-Debut adult romance book
-Body Positivity
-Relatable Characters
-Rom Com vibes
Amy Spalding does not disappoint in her first adult romance! The characters simply leap of the page and have you wanting more with each chapter. I absolutely loved Lorna the most she was such a great addition and helped bring the whole story together.
I am not sure who fell more in love.. me with the characters or Nina and Ari. While I loved how the book played out and how Nina and Ari became to grow so close I wish there would have been some elaboration on Nina’s prior relationship. The book mentioned many times how much damage Taylor (Nina’s Ex) had done but never fully elaborated on what happened. The narrators did an excellent job at giving me great visualization throughout the entire book as well! Thank you NetGalley for the chance to listen to this book in exchange for my honest feedback!
Nina is a once aspiring television screen writer has fallen into a rut for the two years. After a devastating break up she fled Los Angeles to the safety of the burbs and to be closer to her beloved aunt. She has been hiding in a condo and a entry level job as a assistant to a publicist, mostly responding to emails for celebrity clients. After a complaint from an upcoming queer actress, Ari Fox, she comes down and meets with the actress and her boss. Sparks fly between Nina and Ari. A friendship forms that simmers into to a very steamy situation between Ari and Nina. As Nina begins to open up to Ari she also is drawn back into the friends that she ghosted all those years ago. Will the relationship work and is Nina worth more than she thinks.
I LOVED THIS BOOK!! The characters pop off the page. Nina was so relatable in issues of worth and self confidence. The spice was on point and it was laugh out loud funny!! I love a book that references a ton of pop culture reference. This book was 10/10.
The setting of queer romance this year is all Hollywood and I'm not complaining. There were some moments in the middle that made me doubt whether this couple were actually good for each other, but I liked them both regardless.
This was an endearing f/f romance.
When Nina was dumped by her ex, she was given a long list of all the ways she was a terrible partner and friend. She withdrew from her friendships and swore off future relationships because of the damage the ex caused.
This is the story of Nina discovering she's not as flawed as she thinks and that she's valuable to those she cut off, and might just be capable of being in a relationship.
I didn't care for the friends, IMO they allowed Nina to withdraw without questioning. I loved Ari. And Lorna was a delight. The narration was very good.
So 3.5, rounded up.
Thank you to RB Media and NetGalley for the audiobook arc!
I had really high hopes for this book after loving Jordi Perez and to a certain extent, it did fulfil my expectations but at the same time, didn't.
The writing style was good, as was the premise but for me, characters lacked depth and there were a lot of things that could've been executed a lot better. The main conflict especially didn't satisfy me at all. I don't want to spoil but the reader is just told about the conflict (which is basically character flaws in the MC) through the various characters but we never get to see the conflict in action except for the very start of the book. It feels like the MC has suddenly overcome them which she didn't.
If these things usually don't bother you then I'll definitely recommend reading it.
Actual rating- 3.5
I enjoyed the characters, and Amy Spalding does a nice job creating an interesting dynamic between them. Plus the side characters are creative and really round out the story.
The narrator, Sophie Amoss, does a nice job with the audio version.
Thanks to NetGalley and RB Media for audio ARC! This was such a delightful read. The romance was swoon-worthy, the relationship and characters felt authentic and developed - even though the characters got together fairly quickly - and the novel flowed perfectly. I loved the group of friends/found family and Nina's Aunt Lorna was a particularly funny character whilst not being a caricature. I especially appreciated the plus size representation and more specifically that the fat character's journey of self-growth (overcoming her anxiety and lack of confidence) did not revolve around her weight. I loved that the main character was found valuable and attractive by others because of who she was as a person and not in spite of her weight. Finally, that the main character was found attractive and desirable and was not fetishized. All of these shouldn't be refreshing or surprising - but romance novels with realized characters and a plot that doesn't live and die by the *spice* can be difficult to find and even more so with fat characters. I'm looking forward to reading more by Amy Spalding!
It felt like it was a very YA book with the plot and wording of the book which disco yo me to continue to listen to the end, i was not a fan
This was such a cute audiobook! I loved the narrator and Nina was so relatable as the main character. She had her moments but so does everyone! I loved the found family concept. I was invested in Nina’s life and wanted the best for her. I love how it’s set in LA and the body positivity. The cover is a masterpiece really grasping what both characters look like.
I think I liked the narrator more than the story lol.
Listening to Sophie Amoss was really fun and I loved all the emotions they were able to pack into every dialogue that called for it. Something about the instalove storyline didn't vibe with me. I'm not opposed to instalove, it's just that this time I wasn't a huge fan of it.
But I did love Nina and her friends; those relationships being mended after so long apart was really sweet and I loved those interactions.
Basically I loved everything but the romance lol, which wasn't bad per say, just not the right vibe for me.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an arc of this title.
Normally I’m not into celebrity romances, but I decided to give this a shot, as I’ll be receiving it in a book box and I’m very glad it did! It was a wonderfully heartwarming read and I really enjoyed both the romance, friendships and how messy the main character was, because,, same lol.
3.5. This was a pretty cute f/f romance with a fun Hollywood setting and tons of lgbt/gender diverse characters. In fact there's literally only one man I can remember in this story and it's their uber driver lmao. The story is centered around Nina, a queer, plus-sized woman working in the entertainment industry as a sort of ghostwriter for celebrity emails. side note is this a real job? It sounds kind of fun.
Anyway what Nina really wants to do is write for movies and tv. Her job is pretty mundane until she meets Ari, one of her clients who is an up and coming queer actor known to be difficult to work with. Apparently. I didn't really get that at all from Ari's vibe? I think it was just sort of written in as a catalyst for them to meet, but not once in the story did I see Ari as neurotic or controlling, more the cool go-with-the-flow type. But that's just me.
Anyway (2) they meet, become entangled, chaos ensues, they have a disagreement, they make up, I won't spoil the end for you but all's well that ends well. I will say that something I HIGHLY APPRECIATED was that the issues they encountered in their relationship were NOT a miscommunication trope!! Thank you for being original! It felt much more realistic and satisfying for them to work out legitimate mistakes made on both parts rather than just getting mad at each other for not talking :)
The characters ranged from ok to good for me. I liked Nina enough. She's definitely a bit lost and DEFINITELY needs to go to therapy, which was acknowledged and talked about openly with her friends which I loved :) speaking of which I LOVED her friends! Such a fun little group that love and support and uplift each other, I loved them. Ari was probably the weak point for me - I thought she was a little love bomby at times and I hated how she always called Nina by her full name as some kind of quirk, it was so annoying please 😭
One thing I didn't super love/care about was a side plotline with Ari's aunt who is in a nursing home. Maybe this makes me heartless but I just didn't really care 😭 Lorna seemed cool but I didn't think her presence added anything to the story. In fact I kinda forgot about that entire part of the book until right now writing this. oop.
I also thought parts of it were a bit repetitive, it felt like at least 3/4 of this book took place in various restaurants or bars and I kind of started to feel like I was reading the same parts over and over. The last 1/4 ish was my favorite part with the art show and then the party in the epilogue was super cute.
Overall really liked! Thanks RB Media and NetGalley for the arc!
