This was such a suspenseful and gripping novel! I flew through it and cannot wait to read more by this author.
Emma and Ariella are neighbours in an elite suburb in Sydney. But they both have secrets, one of them that results in Ariella's murder. As it turns out, Emma's daughter, Kiki, has filmed the murder, also putting them in danger. Emma's husband forces the family to leave their home in the wake of the murder and escape on their yacht but the urgency behind leaving doesn't make sense. As the story goes along it's clear they all have something to hide.
This was full of lies and secrets and fabulous twists and turns. The author's writing is just sensational and I could not put this down.
Thanks so much to NetGalley and Amazon UK Publishing for the gifted review copy.
Holly Craig has written an entertaining novel with “The Shallows.” A domestic thriller centering on murder, secrets, and friendships.
Emma and Arielle live in an exclusive neighborhood in Sydney. A perfect neighborhood apparently? With perfect lives, children and husbands? Until, Arielle is found murdered! Not only that, Emma’s daughter has inadvertently and unknowingly uploaded a video of the murder. So, what was once perfect has been shattered and now Emma doesn’t know who to trust.
There really isn’t anything new in this domestic thriller novel. The characters are not likable or relatable, now in some cases unlikable characters are deliciously fabulous, but not here. The constant back and forth each chapter is an art, and if you don’t do it correctly it can be confusing, as it was here, at times.
With that said, the story moves quickly and is entertaining, but will be forgettable.
Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for an eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
A suspenseful thriller of a book. The only thing I didn’t like was the jumping back in forth in time. Each chapter will be a different time either months or weeks before. It was a little bit much to keep track of.
Heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Definitely one of the best books this year.
For me, this is one of those perfect beach reads.
A proper page turner, but probably won't remember it a few weeks down the line.
It's fast paced, and full of action, a lot of which seemed quite crazy.
I'm not sure I liked any of the characters, Emma least of all, which is saying something going on the company she keeps.
It's the one to pick if you want a bit of entertainment, and who doesn't?
An absolute nail biter right to the end. Read it in 2 days and couldn't get to the end fast enough. Heart pounding, skin tingling good with a strong female character. Fast paced, quick chapters that keep you wanting more and more, in a race to the end. Beautifully written, absolutely loved it.
Holy cow!! This book was a wild read. I highly loved and enjoyed it. It had me into it since the very beginning, and had me sat on the edge of my seat. I didn’t see all those twists and turns had me gasping every now and then. I absolutely loved it
Thank you netgalley for the chance to read this book. I was on the fence about whether or not I would like it, but figured I would give it a shot. It wasn’t for me. It was too long for me. I even skipped around to try to get more into the story and I just couldn’t. I feel like the plot could have been told in less pages and would have been better.
What a read!
The perfect holiday/beach read, it sets you on the edge and keeps you there throughout. When Emma’s new neighbours move in she soon realises all is not what it seems and there are so many twists and turns in this book which is set in current and past (but only by months) times. Completely loved and quite literally didn’t put it down!
