In the same line as other Stamped from the Beginning versions, this provides an illustrated version of the history of slavery, the negative connotation of being Black and where many stereotypes drive from. Its content is as significant and essential as the other versions, but this provides a visually appealing version to grab an audience who appreciates or better learns from visuals. The illustrations are enjoyable and comprehensible. Overall, it is a great way to continue to spread the Stamped from the Beginning message.
So great! I'm really looking forward to this being published. I think it will be a lot more accessible to younger readers than even the kids version of the book, and therefore will have a much greater impact on those who need the information the most. I am really glad this is becoming a graphic novel and will definitely purchase it for my library.
This book has so much information it gives you history in easy to understand ways. The book is not an easy read emotionally so to make it an easy read physically will really help it get into the hands of kids. Which is important. I cannot wait to see the final project.

#netgalleyarc Yes, yes, and more yes,! I love that so many nonfiction books are being converted into graphic novels and this one was awesome. Such important topics are covered and are made all the more accessible with this book. Will definitely be ordering multiple copies for my HS library.
While this is only for the excerpt provided, it is clear that Joel Christian Gill has done an excellent job distilling Ibram X. Kendi's magnificent Stamped from the Beginning. The illustrations are expressive and dramatic, conveying the vast scope of the original work with a little bit of humor mixed into the history. This version is accessible and, despite its heavy subject matter, a lot of fun to read. I will be sure to get the full book when it was released to see how GIll adapts the later chapters of the book.
This is heavy content reframed in a digestible way for middle grade kids.
My 11 year old and I read the original Stamped (kids version) in 2020, but I know he’d have loved this version even more as he’s always been a fan of graphic novels. And frankly there’s just some emotions pictures can more easily relay than words alone.
I read the children's version of this previously and was excited to see a graphic format version was coming. From the preview, it looks like it will be a great addition. Kids who are perhaps intimidated by a lot of text will be more drawn to this version. Great information!
This is an important book, and a lot of people need to read it, but I quite honestly found it hard to parse. The lettering is crowded and cramped, the panels don't flow particularly well, and there is so. much. text. It doesn't feel like it was born as a graphic book, but rather was a text-only book being shoehorned into a graphic format. It just doesn't work well. The text needs space, and there needs to be less of it.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this ARC Excerpt in exchange for an honest review.
As this was just an excerpt, I cannot review it as I would a full novel. However, I can say that I've been wanting to read Stamped from the Beginning, in novel format, for quite some time. So when I saw that there was a graphic novel being written and that an excerpt was being made available, I had to request it. I've been intimidated to read Stamped from the Beginning, as I'm sure many other readers are, the content can seem quite dense and because of its important in addition, can be intimidating.
So far, this excerpt was easy to understand, even if it was packed full of information, and less intimidating to digest! I think with this being written, readers will find it easier to read, even as a preliminary read to the full fledged novel. I am not sure if they will be an exact comparison, but even still, this graphic novel feels like a great start. Within the 71 pages of the excerpt I've already learned more about the sides of history that are not taught in our regular schools in the USA.
I would 100% purchase the full length version when it is released, and I would recommend this to family and friends as well.
It's difficult to give a review for an excerpt but as an educator I feel this graphic novel would be a great launching point. I do feel it is beneficial to have read the entire book by Ibram X. Kendi to get a more complete understanding of the context but as an educational tool I feel this graphic novel could be very beneficial.
I can't review an unfinished book. This will count against my request/review ratio. This wasn't marked as an excerpt when I requested it.
This is the graphic novel version of Stamped from the Beginning by @ibramxk @joelchristiangill

Racism has been interwoven in our nation’s history since its birth. Antiracism is the effort to combat racist ideals with facts and empathy to change the minds, laws and behaviors of the people. Dr. Kendi’s work is beautifully drawn by Gill and takes a bit of creative license in order to best illustrate where we’ve been as a nation, where we are and hopefully, where we’re going.

If you’ve read the adult, YA and/or MG version of this amazing nonfiction title then you will definitely love the GN adaptation as it creates visuals that make the topic of antiracism and our nation’s history even easier to understand. This book releases June 6 and like all that came before it, a must read.
CW: violence, racism, racist slurs, microaggressions
I really like the premise of this and how it shows how it's using the graphic novel format to talk about race, culture, politics, etc. I think this chapter wasn't as engaging to me because I'm less interested in early America. It felt like there were a lot of names / ideas, and it just felt a little heavy? I still appreciated the goal, and am looking forward to picking up a more complete copy later!
(4/5) I'm glad that I have read the original version of this book (non-graphic novel), because I think that helped provide some context that a novel of this length obviously doesn't have the space to cover. Unfortunately, I don't feel comfortable giving a review of the graphic novel's content, since I was only provided an excerpt, but I enjoyed the art style and presentation and will definitely be checking this out again once it comes out.
This was amazing adaption of the orginal text. This version brings out the key points with humor, amazing art and showing and telling the history of racist ideas.
I found in graphic novel format that I enjoyed leaning in this way and I think many young readers and everyone will find it less dense and over daunting.
Thank you for providing this ARC I hope own voices add to this cause this is where thir voice counts.
I'm sorry, but I'm not comfortable reviewing excerpts of upcoming titles. If I'd known this wasn't the full book, I wouldn't have requested it. I look forward to reading it when it's released though!
I was provided an excerpt of this book by the publisher in exchange for a review
Stamped from the Beginning is well written and researched history of how racist ideas have shaped American life from its inception. I have read the original edition as well as the teen and YA editions. This text in any form should be required reading for everyone. This graphic novel edition is beautifully illustrated. The original text is vast and detailed. While I enjoy reading that version, I found this illustrated version easier to follow along with and maintain focus and engagement.
This is an excerpt from the upcoming graphic novel edition of Stamped from the Beginning by Ibram X. Kendi. The original book has been on my TBR for years but non-fiction, especially such hard-hitting, important topics, intimidate me. So this adaptation was an amazing way to get the information in a more digestible way.
I appreciated the blending of information with relatable examples and humor. This text, in any form should be required reading. I will be buying the book and am looking forward to finishing the story since this was an excerpt.
I enjoy all of Gill’s work and have become somewhat of a collector. the art was impeccable and absorbing. I do think some aspects of story-telling were a bit above the age-level of the intended audience — not graphic or inappropriate, just a bit oversimplified because of how complex they are. But I will still buy and recommend it once it releases! It’s a great addition or more accessible alternative to the fuller work.
I love Stamped and Stamped From The Beginning so I know this will be great. I enjoyed the first section and this form of storytelling being applied to history — although I wish it was mentioned somewhere that this galley was only an excerpt. I would have rather waited for the release than read a portion of a book.
