The family Cabin from James Caine was published on February 14 2023.
I have never liked surprise parties and after reading this book I hope no one ever plans one for me. The story starts out with Dawn wanting to have her husband Mikes surprise 40th birthday at their family cabin with a few friends. When Dawn shows up to start setting up she finds the missing girl from the news on the radio handcuffed in the basement.
Who kidnapped and handcuffed then locked this girl in the basement? Was it a stranger who seen an empty cabin as an opportunity? Was it her husband ? Dawn had no idea and she had to find out fast before this happened to her too.
I’ve never read any other books from James Caine but I’ll be sure to check them out in the future. This drastically changed and I was so hooked I couldn’t put it down till I found out what happened.
HOLY WOW.. Wouldve never saw that twist coming. This writer keeps you thinking who done it, even making your mind wonder if the hampster did it! Easy 5 star from me!
Thank you NetGalley for an advance copy of this future Lifetime Movie!!!!
I just don't know where to start, OMG James Caine you are one of the most twisted authors I know ( in a good way of course). This was a roller coaster, every time I thought I knew who the big bad "wolf" was, I was wrong. Dawn and Amber were the best crime fighting duo I have read about in a longtime. They were forced together by just plain bad luck but came out to be the sheros of the stories. The story flowed effortlessly, what started as a fun weekend in a family cabin turned out to be everyone involved worst nightmare.
I had to add this one to my library because I can see this one being revisited! Watch out Stephen King, there is a new "king" on your heels. Run, buy, READ!
Wow! This book started out super strong and did not let up! Great characters and plot. Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this book- will be looking to read others by this author. Thank you to NetGalley, James Caine and Victory Editing for the opportunity to read this ARC. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was definitely a quick read with a few twists that were well timed.
Dawn plans a fun weekend away with friends at her family's cabin to celebrate her husband's birthday. She has noticed her husband has been a little "off" lately and hopes this surprise weekend away will cheer him up. Shortly after arriving, though, Dawn hears and finds a girl chain in the basement. Who is responsible? Does her husband have another side to him that she doesn't know about? Is it her brother-in-law that she isn't a huge fan of but happens to be hunting with friends in the area that weekend? Is it the creepy neighbour who hikes near their cabin?
The book definitely held my attention and had me trying to figure out who could be trusted. I liked that it was a quick, twisty read. It flowed well. I did find some of it was a little unbelievable but it didn't take away much from the plot or ambience of the story. I felt for some of the characters as they shared stories from their childhood and it definitely had a few jaw-dropping moments.
I would recommend this book for a quick, twisty read. I would definitely like to read others by this author.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
This was a very quick read for me. It held my interest all the way through. I did find a lot of it unbelievable but that also made the story more interesting. Made me keep turning the pages to find out what would happen and why things were going the way they were.
You start out meeting Amber. Amber is a college student studying to be a lawyer. She spends lots of time in the library studying for exams. She is taken one evening when she leaves and doesn't take a call from her mother. She awakens in a basement chained with her hands handcuffed behind her back. A man with a wolf's head comes in and leaves a bowl of water and dog food. Also a bucket. He demands that she eats and drinks like a dog. He demands that she call him "master." He tells her he will put her down if she does not obey him. He has no regards at all to how he is making her feel. For what he is doing. He's a cold and calculating person. But who is he really?
Then you meet Dawn. Dawn is on her way to the family cabin. She's planning a surprise party for her husband, Mike, who will be turning forty next week. She wants to do something special for this this weekend and also invites her best friend Sarah and her husband Vic. Dawn and Mike have a young six year old son, Junior. Junior will be staying with Dawn's parents for the weekend. She wants everything to be perfect for this weekend.
Once Dawn reaches the cabin though she finds something that will change her life forever. There is a woman in the basement. She's handcuffed and chained. What on earth is going on. Who did this. Before she can help the woman she hears her husband arrive and tells the woman to keep quiet and she will be back to help her. Now this is where I found fault with this story. I would think that any person upon finding a woman bound in their family cabin would immediately call the police. Get help. Find out what is going on. But Dawn does none of this. She thinks it's her husband that did this. After being married for thirteen years she doesn't know him? I found that a bit out there also. But still it held my attention.
You meet Rick who is Mike's brother. You meet Vic and Sarah. Rick is Mike's younger brother and is unmarried. You also meet a neighbor. An older man who lives in a cabin year round. As this story unfolds you get to know all of these characters. It's told back and forth between Amber and Dawn. You get to know them and you may or may not like them. I liked Amber but thought Dawn was way to weak. Why she didn't call for help is beyond me. But like I said this story would have ended then I suppose. You will find out who did this. Who is behind this kidnapping and much more.
I enjoyed reading this story. It held my interest even though I had so many questions "why." Why not call the police. Why not shout out for help when in the grocery store if you couldn't use a phone. Why not ask Mike what was going on if you suspected it was him. I know you would possibly be afraid of a husband if you thought he was that evil but after thirteen years you would have to ask...
Thank you #NetGalley, #JamesCaine, #VictoryEditingNetGalleyCo-Op for this ARC. This is my own true thoughts about this book.
3.5 stars. It could have been a big five stars but I had to many questions. Read it and judge for yourself.
This book caught my attention within the first few pages and I couldn’t believe how engrossed I became! I kept trying to get ahead of Dawns perspective but I never knew what was next. The ending was the twist it needed. This was a a very very good novel and I will be recommending to my fellow book worm friends!
Let me start by saying I absolutely love thrillers and books with multiple points of view. This book did not disappoint! It was a little slow to start but then I couldn't stop reading once it got going. Overall it was a great book and one that I will recommend to other psychological thriller lovers.
Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for the ARC!

Dawn was so excited to surprise her husband Mike for his 40th birthday. Mike had not been himself lately so Dawn thought a kid free weekend with friends at their family cabin would help him to feel better. Dawn arrives early to set up his surprise party and hears a noise coming from the basement of the cabin. After investigating, Dawn finds a young woman she recognizes as Amber. Amber has been on the news as being missing. Why is this young woman chained in the basement of her family cabin? Mike really hasn’t been himself lately. What has he done?
Thank you to Victory Editing NetGalley and James Caine for the advanced copy of The Family Cabin. This was a page turner and I had it finished within 2 hours. I was instantly submerged in the story. It reminded me so much of the early 2000’s cult classic suspense movies. I had several theories as to who I thought was responsible for Ambers kidnapping and my main theory was right. The only reason why I didn’t rate as 5 stars was because there was one more character that I wanted to hear from at the end and didn’t.
The Family Cabin was published on February 14, 2023. Definitely add this one to your lists!
This was a quick and twisty read, and had me guessing the whole time. Some parts of the story moved a little slow, but it has a great ending! I'd recommend this one.
Amber organized a birthday weekend for her husband Mike, at their cabin. She invites their friends, another couple, to the isolated cabin in the woods. Soon after arrival, Amber finds a girl locked in the basement of the cabin.
The reader is left wondering who kidnapped this girl. Is it Amber's husband? One of their friends? Things start to heat up and you can trust no one.
Overall, this book was a bit slow. Many of the storylines were simply unbelievable, which made it a bit difficult to read and quite frankly, a bit silly. I did not really like any of the characters, either. It was quite predictable and there was no real twist and the end.
Thank you Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op and NetGalley for the advanced copy!
Fantastic exciting thriller. I was hooked from the beginning. It was a real page turner. It was fast paced from the off. Lots of twists and turns to keep you interested. Exciting plot that plays out very well.
This book is only 160 pages but they were the most action packed, heart-stopping pages I’ve read in a while. Amazing book and story.
This is why I hate surprises!
Dawn wants her husband Mike's 40th birthday to be special since he's been in a bit of a slump, so she plans a surprise weekend away with friends at their family cabin. With their son at her parents' house, they won't have a care in the world while they're snowed in.
The cabin is very secluded and has been in the family for ages. It's where Mike and his brother Rick grew up. When their abusive curmudgeon of a father passed, much to Rick's chagrin, the cabin was left to Mike.
When Dawn arrives first to prepare for the weekend, there's a bit of a problem. There's a missing girl in the basement of this cabin! She tells Dawn her name is Amber and Dawn shushes her until she figures out what to do.
Who PRAY TELL left a missing girl in the basement? Was it someone who saw an empty cabin as an opportunity or someone she knows? She better start finding out or she'll end up in the basement too!
I loved Caine's last book, The In Laws. I thought it was fresh and surprisingly twisted. I was hoping this would rattle me the same and it absolutely did. It was so outrageous, I had to laugh at times. I was screaming inside! this author has a way of writing that really draws you in and keeps you anxiously turning pages.
Caine is a new expert at taking you out to a secluded family home and ratcheting up the tension and I love it. Keep it coming!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review.
Wow! This was a crazy ride, a fast paced psychological thriller that had me guessing until the end. Every time I thought I had it figured out… PLOT TWIST!
This book grabbed ahold of my attention right away and kept me engaged the entire time. I couldn’t put it down.
Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy in return for my honest review. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

I devoured this book in a few short hours. I truly couldn’t put it down until I knew how it would end. It is a really well written psychological thriller with dual POV that kept you guessing until the end. There were so many twists and turns that you didn’t really know who to trust. It was dark and suspenseful.
The only thing that kept me from giving it 5 stars was the epilogue. It was endearing and thoughtful but it didn’t match the tone of the rest of the story and I didn’t find it to be a necessary addition.
My true rating is 4.5 stars.
My review will be posted on Instagram (link below) as well as Goodreads and Amazon.
Wow! Starts a little slow, but just keeps getting better! A fantastic book - really enjoyed the story, and by the middle couldn’t put it down until I saw how it ended! Great read!!!!

Amber organizes a surprise get-together with another couple for her husband Mike's 40th birthday, at their family cabin. The only problem is - Amber is the one getting surprised, when she arrives and goes down into the basement after she hears a noise, only to find a woman chained up down there. Amber knows her husband has seemed a little distant lately, and has left the house a lot in the evenings alone, but she chalked it up to midlife crisis, not this. Could her husband possbly be a monster and she had no clue? Or did someone else, anyone who knew where they kept the key to the cabin (she knows the fake rock is the most obvious hiding spot ever and a lot of people would have access to the place), use their cabin to hide the girl, not knowing they would be using it this weekend?
I have mixed emotions about this book. There was a lot of action, and suspense, and there were multiple suspects, so it did keep you guessing for awhile. My problem with the book is that I have a hard time reconciling the fact that her husband never showed his "other side", despite the upbringing he and his brother had. If he and his brother were brought up to hate women, it looks like it would have shown before now. I did also get a little annoyed with Amber constantly bringing up how she was an actress and talking about her acting skills, and playing a part. That just seemed a bit repetitive. Other than that it was a good book.
Heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Definitely one of the best books this year.
Dawn organises a surprise visit to the family cabin for her husband Mike's birthday, but she is the one who gets a shocking surprise when she discovers a young woman handcuffed and hidden away in the basement. Who is she? Did Dawn's husband do this? Or somebody else?
A tense and thrilling story that keeps you turning the pages until the shocking ending. Great twists and turns. Really enjoyed it!
