This was my first Alex Finlay novel and now I need to go back and read more. This book was a good popcorn thriller. Very fast paced. I picked it up and read it in one sitting.
Thank you Netgalley for this audio edition of What Have We Done by Alex Finlay.
Jenna, Nico, and Donnie, once friends in a trauma filled group home, are now grown and making the best of their lives. They have lost touch, but will always remain tethered by what they endured as kids. Now they are forced to have a reunion when all of them are threatened with violence and danger. Jenna is given a hit job that isn't optional, Donnie is thrown over the cruise ship he is working, and Nico is trapped in the mine where he has a reality TV show. It's clear right away that these aren't just flukes, and they are all going to have to work together to find out who is out to get them.
Normally this kind of book is right up my alley, but I unfortunately really struggled with it. I found myself constantly having to repeat chapters. It felt a bit messy, like the transfer between past and present were way too abrupt. I just couldn't get firm enough with the story to really dive in.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an audio copy to listen to in exchange for an honest review.
This was a wild ride - I binged the entire book in a day and have no regrets. It is fast paced, with some very flawed characters that you can't help but root for (mostly). I could picture most of the book as a movie and it ended quite well (mostly). I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a fast-paced book.
What Have We Done by Alex Finlay
Five kids did something bad 25 years ago! And now a sociopathic, set of twin female assassins tries to hunt each of them. The story is narrated in 3 pov. Nico, Donnie, Ben, Art and Jenna are the characters who meet after losing their love ones and end up at Savior House. There is someone killing young girls the kids believe it is a monster also they are being bullied by other members of the house.
Now we move forward into the future Ben a father of a young girl a district Judge who was the smartest of the group is killed. Someone is coming after them and it is up to the four left to figure out who it is and to stop them.
The story character development seemed off a bit but the overall mystery was good. For this reason I have mixed feelings about the story. I don't want to give any more information away about the story.
I do recommend it for its fast pace and the mystery part of this thriller.
Narrated by Brittany Pressley; James Patrick Cronin; Jon Lindstrom and Maggie Thompson which made following each character easier for they had their own voice. I would like to read something else from this author in the future the murder aspect of the story was really good. If you like thrillers with some mystery then this one will be fore you.
Thank you to Netgalley, Macmillan Audio and St. Martin's Press for a free copy of What Have We Done for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions I expressed in this review are my own.
It takes a bit to get into the story and get all the characters straight, but once invested you won’t want to stop listening. The characters are diverse and interesting. With so many principle characters, it was a good idea to have more than one narrator. The narration team has done a great job. It’s clear, easy to listen to and well paced.
Thank You to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for the opportunity to enjoy the audiobook version of this ARC.
What Have We Done by Alex Finlay is a story about 5 childhood friends that are forever connected by a secret they've kept for 25 years. I have seen a lot of people really like it and I thought it was very well written. There were a lot of interesting things happen but I just could not quite connect with the book the way I hoped I would. I think as an audiobook, it was difficult to keep up with all the main characters. It was not bad and I think I'll read other books by this author, but I just did not love this one.
Thank you Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for providing me with an early copy of this audiobook. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a really fun audiobook with a stellar cast of narrators. Hats off to Brittany Pressley, James Patrick Cronin, Jon Lindstrom, and Maggie Thompson for bringing this large group to life! I really appreciated the distinctive voice for each of the main characters.
The story was about Jenna, Donnie, Nico, Arty, and Ben who met at a group home as teenagers. Twenty-five years later, a contract killer is hunting them and they need to find out why. This was another action-packed thriller from Alex Finlay! I struggled to keep track of the shifting timeline in the audiobook format, but the plot definitely kept my attention. I wish there was a little more character building, I wanted to know more about the 5 as adults to connect with them on a deeper emotional level. Overall, it was a unique story and I enjoyed it.
Thank you Macmillan Audio and Minotaur Books for the opportunity to listen to the advanced audiobook!

What Have We Done tells the story of foster siblings that did something terrible during their time at Savior House as orphaned teens. Decades later, they are being hunted down by an unknown assassin. After reuniting in order to figure who is after them, and why, they are forced to confront the terrible event all those years ago.
The story is told through multiple POVs and has dual timelines. Sometimes that makes a book difficult to follow as an audiobook, but the distinct narration for each character was very helpful.
i enjoyed the listen and thought each narrator gave a great performance. It was a little unrealistic, but at the end of the day i read fiction by choice, and letting go of wanting things to be 100% believable is part of the deal. I would have liked more character development during the time at Savior House in order to really flush out the character arcs.
It wasn’t a perfect 5 stars for me, but overall an entertaining listen. (3.8 Stars)
4.5 stars! Fast-paced and edge of your seat reading! 25 years ago, a group of friends did a very bad thing. A very bad thing that may have saved them at the time. The kids were orphans, living in a group home called Savior House. Several girls kept disappearing. It was all very hush, hush.
Now 3 of the friends, Nico, Jenna and Donnie, are being hunted for that very thing that happened 25 years ago. Their friend, Benny, a federal judge, is already dead. Any of them could be next if they don't figure out what is going on and who was actually at fault for the missing girls of the past. Read by a full cast!
*Special thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for this audio e-arc.*
DNF... I can't stay focused on this story. I even tried the audiobook twice. Maybe I will come back to it one day.
Thanks to the publisher for giving me access to this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
What Have We Done? Well, it involved 5 kids shooting a person in a shallow grave. That isn’t a spoiler. It’s the opening scene. Then the excitement ramps up. We are introduced to three characters-Jenna, Donnie, and Nico. All three are obviously from the first scene but live completely difference lives. What they still have in common is that someone is trying to kill all of them.
Alex Finlay smoothly folds in bits of the past, the group home these kids all survived, into the events of the present. A sinister place where young girls regularly disappeared. As kids, they tried to stand up for themselves and change things. So why is someone trying to kill them now? Every character is partly unlikable and partly sympathetic. You really feel for these kids. I’d read a lot more about Jenna!
Read this book on a day that you have some time because you will not want to put it down.
The different narrators in the audio version helped to keep the many characters separate and easy to follow.
What Have We Done by Alex Finlay
3 people, living 3 very different lives, are brought back together after someone tries to kill them. They are now forced to revisit growing up in the same foster home and the people who connect them. Lots of twists and turns and lots of characters!
I’ve heard not so rave reviews on this one so I ended up listening to the audio. I was surprised to find I actually did enjoy it! The audiobook kept me entertained through a several hours of deep cleaning the kids play room.
I found the characters likeable and interesting. The storyline was a bit scattered and at times confusing, but I still had no real problem following along and guessing where it was headed. I’m sure it was unrealistic at times as well, but I find most thrillers like that!
Overall it was a good book, nothing amazing but I recommend the audio for an entertaining story.
Thank you to @netgalley and @macmillan.audio for the audio and @minotaur_books for the ebook!

This was the first novel from Alex Finlay that I have experienced. It did not disappoint! I am a firm believer that when listening to audiobooks the narrator(s) can make or break the story. The group that performed this novel did an excellent job. Their voices kept me interested and they communicated the different emotions within the book well. They also made it easy to follow the storyline just like you were reading the physical book. I really enjoyed this novel and the story that Finlay created. I loved getting the different points of view from each of the former Savior House residents and seeing the web that was spun between them. I liked how past and present helped develop each of the characters as well. The mystery had me hooked from early on. I love the different twists the plot took and even better was that I didn’t see the ending coming! Finlay did a great job keeping the truth hidden until just the right moment. I will absolutely be reading more from Alex Finlay and recommend others to do the same!
3.5 stars
I loved Alex Finlay's previous book Every Last Fear so it only stands to reason I'd grab this one. I was lucky enough to receive both the kindle and audio book.
Told from the perspectives of a trio that were bound together by a shared experience in a group home 25 years ago. This experience wasn't shared with anyone turning this into a dark and mysterious story. I was captivated right away.
What Have We Done is a story that jumps around a lot. The mystery held my attention and left me scratching my head wondering what was going on. But my interest did start to want somewhat in the middle. I think after a certain point, with a lot of characters, things were a little muffled in terms of who was who. Ultimately though things fit together at the end.
The audio was read by a number of different voices, all of whom did a great job. It came in at almost 9 hours and was enjoyable to listen to.
While What Have We Done? was an entertaining read Every Last Fear is still my favourite and one I recommend.
My thanks to St. Martins Press and Macmillan Audio for advanced copies in exchange for a honest review.
I liked the overall story of this book but at times I got lost due to all the different points of view in the story . Three people that have very different lives now are thrown back into the past . When they were kids they all lived in a group home together until other kids seemed to be going missing . Now they must solve the mystery while being trailed by twin assassins. Instead of going to college these two decide to become killers instead and since there are two you don’t know what may happen
I got soo lost with all the different pics that it became hard to track what was happening at time. Maybe just wasn’t for me or would have been better for me to read it in print . I’m happy for all those that will enjoy . I did think the people they chose for the narration did really well though and recommend.
Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC of this book. I listed to the audio version. Narrators were solid. I wish it would have more clearly stated then vs now as the past and present timeline sometimes took a few paragraphs to contextualize. One character stood out from the rest; Donny was so endearing!! I enjoyed the premise of the storyline and really loved the ending. That being said, there was a whole lot of suspending belief required. It would make a great action movie! It felt more action than mystery by way of thrillers. It was different from the norm so I appreciated that but it was not one of my faves maybe just because femme fatales are not my jam.
This book is a thriller that has the past of three characters coming back to haunt them. I loved that each character had their own narrator and they were fantastic. There is a stay-at-home mom that's past has major baggage. A rock star, and I loved his rockstar persona and a reality start producer. They all crossed paths when they were younger and are back trying to figure out who wants them dead. This is a fun thriller! Thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan audio for the opportunity to listen to this book that is out March 7th 2023
Jenna, Donnie, Nico were close friends growing up in Savior House, a group home for kids without parents. They were also close with other outcast children at Savior which had mysteriously gone missing or were later murdered. They all put their past behind them, or so they thought, when they went their separate ways all those years ago. Now adults who haven’t communicated with each other in years, working as a mother slash undercover hit woman, washed-up alcoholic rockstar, and tv producer with a gambling problem, they all must face their reckoning in a dangerous game of cat and mouse with someone from their past. But who? And why? Did it have something to do with what they had all done all those years ago in the woods?
This book was definitely one of my most anticipated reads of the year. I had a choice of consuming this title between audio, physical, and digital and I decided to listen on audio. I flewwww through it in only a handful of days because I was very interested in the plot and how all of these characters’ stories connected. The narrators were also fantastic. I always appreciate when a book written in multiple POVs and/or dual timelines have multiple narrators to fit the bill. I had no idea where the story was going or how it would end but it kept slowly building and kept me pretty entertained the entire time. I do wish it was slightly faster paced and more thrill, though, but it all came together in the end.
3.5/5 stars
This was my first Alex Finlay book and I’ll definitely be reading more from him in the future!
Thank you to Minotaur/SMP, Alex, and NetGalley for an advance listener and advance reader copies of this title in exchange for an honest review.
Reading Between the Wines book review #26/115 for 2023:
Rating: 3 🍷 🍷 🍷
Book 📱: What Have We Done
Author: Alex Finlay
Genre: General Fiction (Adult) | Mystery & Thrillers
RELEASES on March 7, 2023!!!
Sipping thoughts: This book is filled with all of the things that make books great for me like multiple POVs, short chapters, switching timelines and dark content. While I enjoyed the previous books I read by Finlay, I felt like this one was a little bit of a letdown because I wanted to love it. There were so many characters which in itself is okay but I just didn’t care about anyone except Jenna. I also felt like I needed more time spent at the orphanage to build the storyline and make the mystery make sense. The ending was jammed pack and left me a little confused. I wish the real villain had made more sense to me.
Cheers and thank you to @NetGalley and @MacMillanAudio for an advanced copy of @WhatHaveWeDone.

I am not the right audience for this book!
From the start we are introduced to many characters and multiple storylines all at once. I couldn't quite follow what was happening until later in the book. Once I understood the connection I did find that aspect intriguing. Each of the main characters grew up together in a group home and then parted ways. That piece was interesting but I found it hard to connect with any of the characters. I didn't know enough about anyone to care much about them. Those are just the main characters, then we also have multiple villains and secondary characters to follow. There was a lot packed into this book!
It was a thriller, but without much investment in the characters I didn't really care what would happen next I was just waiting for the book to end.
Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy of the book to read and review.
