I made it to about 70% before I decided not to finish it. The multiple POVs were a bit disconnected to me. And I didn't care about any of them.
3.5 stars (rounded up)!
"What Have We Done" is the first novel by Alex Finlay that I have read, and I enjoyed it for the most part. I did find it to be a bit formulaic, with characters like an eccentric tech billionaire, an aging binge-drinker has-been rockstar, a generic former assassin who has softened now that she has a family, a once-messed-up-kid-turned-lawyer who wants to make the world a better place, etc. This book also sort of had a dynamic akin to the one in Stephen King's "It," but without all of the creepy clown stuff. At first, I was a little confused because there are so many moving parts and so many characters. Luckily, it all becomes clear and eventually clicks into view. When it does, that's when the thrills and twists begin. As our characters have assassination attempts on their lives one by one, we start to realize there are more things going on than we were initially told. Details slowly unravel about what happened 25 years ago to this group of foster kids who all experienced unspeakable atrocities to land them in the same place, Savior House, and what that meant for them moving forward in their lives. When it all comes together in the end...I was a little bit let down, but the ride to get there was compelling enough that I would still recommend this book. I think this story is pretty well-paced, which could have been because I was enraptured with the voiceover work by Brittany Pressley, James Patrick Cronin, Jon Lindstrom, and Maggie Thompson, who make this book 1000 times better than it might have been with just the voices in my head. A+ work to all of them, spectacular narration by the lot of them.
Thank you to NetGalley, Alex Finlay, and Macmillan Audio for providing me with an ARC copy of this book! All opinions are my own, and I was not compensated for my review.
Ah!! Goodness, I wanted to love this! I adore some of Alex Finlays' other work, but this was a miss for me. I could not connect with any of the characters and found the story unrealistic. It felt like popular groups from other books were mixed in with this story, and there were far too many characters. It made the writing feel messy and not cohesive.
I did finish the book, and it did keep my interest because of the suspense and mystery; however, it was predictable.
Someone who enjoys a multi-story line and numerous characters would enjoy this. If you do not need to connect with a character and want a suspenseful story, I would try it!
Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for an audio ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thriller that kept you wondering "what they did" until almost the end of the book. Enjoyed the narrator and the story line itself.
This book was kind of a mess. Too many old tropes -- orphans in a secret society, kids hiding something from their past, identical twins... Ugh. It's like all the major best-selling themes were thrown in a blender and this was the result. No character development. No sympathetic characters. No real backstory. Was this written by AI?
A killer is targeting a small group of adults who were all at the same foster home. It has been 25 years since they have been together. Why now? What does it have to do with home the home in Chesterton, PA? I jumped into this one blind -- just knowing it was not connected to Alex Finlay's previous titles. The audiobook features multiple narrators including the talented Brittany Pressley and three others. I kept a digital copy open as well so I wouldn't miss any details. The POV switches often and keeps the plot moving. You might think you know what is going on, but there will be surprises --even in the Epilogue. I loved how this kept me on my toes and that Finlay has given us another strong female protagonist to root for with potential for future books.

This book was okay. I enjoyed the multiple perspectives to the story and multiple storylines. Still, it felt like there were A LOT of different characters and storylines….Sometimes it did not feel cohesive. At times, I thought that this was a sequel because it felt like there may be something I was missing, only to realize that this was not a sequel.
What Have We Done is a very intricately put together novel. There are many individuals involved and you have to pay close attention to what’s going on with each person so you don’t miss something. Which is why I’m happy that I chose to listen to the audio version of this book. All of the narrators kept my attention and were great with their part of the story.
Overall this story sucked me in and I listened to the audio in less than a day. I was drawn into the lives of these people that I couldn’t stop listening until the story was over and I knew how the book ended. Like I said above, the narrators did a great job with this book and I highly recommend it!
I had high hopes for this but was disappointed
It was good but not as great as I was hoping. There were several narrators and was a bit unbelievable
Thanks so very much to NetGalley and Alex Finlay for this eARC in exchange for my honesty opinion. Set to publish 3/7/23
This wasn't the book for me, but this is likely because I couldn't follow the audiobook well. I might try it again with an e-book or physical copy; I found the audio difficult to navigate.
I love Alex Finlay so I was excited to jump into his latest. Unfortunately, this one just didn't work for me. There are entirely too many characters and not one of them is likeable. The entire cast of narrators helped some, but still... The plot is a bit clunky and predictable. Overall, it didn't click for me. A huge thank you to Netgalley, Alex Finlay, and the publisher for an ALC in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is my second book by the author, and while it was entertaining, it just didn't quite grab my attention. I couldn't really connect to the characters, and though the writing was good, I did feel the story was somewhat predictable. That being said, I would give this author another try in the future.
I did the audio - and loved it. Multiple narrators always makes me happy.
Children in a group home are bound for life - sharing a deep secret. Missing girls from their group home. A small town run by brothers.
And now someone is hunting them down.
Really good twists. I enjoyed these characters - and their harsh start to life. Very well done.
3.5 stars rounded up to 4!
This was actually my first book by Alex Finlay and I definitely enjoyed his writing enough to pick up more of his work, so I'm looking forward to reading the Night Shift and Every Last Fear after hearing such great things.
What Have We Done was a very fun and fast-paced thriller that was very heavy on the plot while being light on the character focus, even though there were LOTS of characters introduced in this one. The audiobook was well done and was very quickly paced, so I finished this one in just a handful of sittings. It definitely took me a little bit at first to really understand the different main character POV's, but once I did it wasn't too hard to tell who was who and how their stories connected.
I loved the 3 POV's in this book although I found the character development to be relatively lacking, so it made it hard to stay super engaged with what was happening to them and I found it hard to make myself really care about them because of this. Regardless, definitely one worth picking up for a fun and quick thrilling read, although I definitely recommend going in knowing it's not the most realistic of thrillers-which I personally don't mind as long as it's done well.
Thank you Netgalley and Minotaur Books for my audiobook review copy! Publishes 3/7.
Thank you NetGalley, St. Martins Press, MacMillian Audio, and the author for the #gifted ALC in exchange for honest review. Such a great audiobook production with a full cast. I was loving it up to 40% or so and thought it would go in a direction then in a completely different one. How many characters are too many characters in thriller books???
3.5/5☆
So this book is definitely different. It starts off grabbing your attention, and it does not let it go ever. This is definitely a murder thriller book and has a ton of twists. The minute you think you know how it will end, something changes the dynamic. The ending is great, and I loved it so much.
WHAT HAVE WE DONE - ALEX FINLAY
4⭐
PLOT - Jenna is a stay at home mom with a past, Donnie is a rockstar with a habit, Nico is a reality TV producer with a debt.
25 yes ago they were best friends living at Savior house a group home for parentless teens.
When the home was forced to shut down they split up and now they will be reunited as someone is trying to kill them.
MY THOUGHTS -
As with all Alex Finlay s books..the suspense is top notch, multiple alternating POVs and short chapters.
There is quite some action also in this one and I did enjoy the uniqueness of the hired assassin.
Out of all 3 characters Jenna's was by far best and well developed as compared to the others.
In all a good suspense thriller.
The narration was full cast and was fantastic esp the French accent was on point.
Would definitely recommend the audiobook for this one.
Thank you publishers and netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
Man, I was underwhelmed by this book. I loved Alex Finlay's "The Night Shift" so I thought I'd give this a try. I found the characters unlikeable and the story a little unbelievable. The different narrators were good but I still struggled to follow the story.
Thank you to Netgalley, Alex Finlay, and the publisher for an eARC audiobook.
This book is one of my favorite books of the year, so far! What a wild ride! Just when I thought it was over, there was another huge twist. The narrators were fantastic!
25 years ago 5 kids buried a secret near the group home in which they were living. they all went their separate ways after that. Now, the past is coming back to haunt them. One of them is murdered and the other 4 have had attempts made on their own lives. Who would want them all dead? Who knows their secret? Can they trust one another?
This book was fast paced and very entertaining. I highly recommend the audiobook. There are 4 narrators and the timeline goes back and forth from past to present. Hearing the different narrators really made the connection to the characters easier. Each of the four narrators were also excellent.
I finished this audiobook in 2 sittings because I just had to know what happened. The end of the book was heart stopping. I am rounding up to 4.5 stars.
This is the first book of Alex Finlay that I have read and I can’t wait to read more.
Thank you to Alex Finlay, St. Martin’s Press/Minotaur Books for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
