Thank you @netgalley and @macmillanaudio for the gifted audiobook!
💭Whoa. Talk about a wild! I know I shouldn’t say this but I think my favorite characters in this book were the two psycho hit-women. 🤣 Listen, I not saying I agree with their behavior…I just found them to be so entertaining!
I was easily drawn into this story of past friends now grown and being forced to get back together due to some unexpected deaths. Honestly I think the uniqueness in the characters made for a really fun read. What’s not to love with a stay at home mom with an eyebrow raising past, a rockstar not at his peek, and a broadcaster with a money problem?!
Alex has the ability to bring in many shocking twists and turns at a neck breaking speed. Even though they didn’t seem all the way realistic, it still worked for me. I thoroughly enjoyed this suspenseful, edge of your seat thriller and will certainly grab the next Alex Finlay novel!
Nico, Donnie and Jenna were teens in an abusive group home where they forge a bond having to keep a secret regarding multiple girls from the home going missing.
Twenty five years later, they’ve all made lives for themselves, albeit with baggage, but when someone seems to be trying to kill them, they have to reunite back where it all started.
Told through multiple POVs, the beginning feels like different books, as we get to know the characters and where they are now. The flashbacks to what happened in the past are spread throughout, ultimately leading to everything being revealed quickly and explosively at the end.
This is definitely a book that requires you to suspend disbelief, with high action value and I could imagine it as a movie. However, as the story progressed, I found myself not caring about any of the characters. I was most interested in Jenna’s storyline but when everything was tied about so neatly at the end, it just felt so unrealistic.
Overall, I’d recommend if you like fast moving, action heavy plots. For me, I wished we had more of the past in the beginning so I could connect with the characters and believe in their bond.
The narration of this book was one of the factors that kept me listening to the end. I thought they did a good and engaging job.
Thank you Macmillan Audio for the audiobook through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
My first book by Alex Finlay was The Night Shift and I loved every second of it. What Have We Done, sounded like it was going to follow a similar formula so I could not wait to check it out.
The story follows multiple characters through two different times in their life. Present day, and. Then 25 years earlier when they all were together in a group home. There was something sinister that they all took part in at that group home. Something they all wanted to keep hidden. Now, someone knows what they did and is coming after them.
That summary does not do the book justice. That makes it sound like a typical thriller, but this was so much more than that. This was a story that had a little bit of everything. It had rock stars, hitmen, organized crime, and so much more.
My biggest complaint was I wish it didn’t throw it all at you so quickly. I read the first half of the book I was enjoying it but I was also lost. There were all these stories that have not come together yet and it felt very disjointed. It felt like multiple vignettes and not a cohesive story. All those problems get pushed to the side because the book does come together as one story in the end.
I really enjoyed Finaly’s writing and the characters that he builds. I can’t really get into some of my reasons for not liking this as much as The Night Shift without getting into spoilers so I will need you to trust me.
Even with some of my issues, this is still a great book that I strongly recommend.
Five kids who were at the same group home 25yrs ago have a secret. What is that secret? Well, we don’t find out until near the end of the book but we do know someone is after them. This book is non-stop action and attempted murder. Some of the attempts are even successful. None of this book is plausible but all of if is pure popcorn thriller fun! 🍿
The audiobook is multi-cast with different narrators for each character, which made it easier and more enjoyable to experience.
*Thanks to Minotaur Books, MacMillan Audio, and NetGalley for the advance review copy
This author is quickly becoming one of my favorites for a twisty, thrilling book. The way he sets the scene is full of details that immerses the reader in the pages. How the author used the past only intensified the present and made the thrill of each scene more enjoyable. This book has a plethora of action packed scenes that will no doubt keep your heart racing.
Though this is a multiple POV, I felt as if this book was led by the story, rather than characters. The narrators each brought a unique voice to the story, making it well rounded. For those looking for a huge character arc, I felt that it was lacking in that department. This book shines instead with its “who-done-it” narrative and short chapters that keep the book fast paced. There are twists throughout the book that keep you on your toes and an ending that I didn’t guess.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audiofor this ALC
Overall I really enjoyed this book! I loved the back and forth between past and present. It kept the book so interesting. I also liked the multiple point of views. This was unlike any thriller I’ve read before and I liked the group home background. It made it that much more intriguing.
The narrators for this audiobook were fantastic! I always really enjoy books read by Brittany Pressley - she does such a good job!
Overall I definitely recommend this book!
This was a delight!
Alex Finlay is quickly becoming a favourite of mine.
This book was a little tricky at first, trying to figure out how all the bits fit together.
I do love a good puzzle you know; also there is a LOT of messed up stuff happening in both the present and the flashbacks.
The characters are likable in a detestable sort of way, the plot is exciting, and much intrigue happens.
All in all a fabulous listen!
Much love to NetGalley & Macmillan Audio for DRC.
This book just screams "I was written by a man!" lol I'm sorry but it's true. I mostly read female authors and I can always tell when it's a female written by a man and I chuckle a little. It was unfortunate because Jenna was the only character out of 4 POVs that I liked. Well, I did enjoy the mystery narrators but that was few and far between. The male narrators were annoying, kinda boring and with Donny, very cringe. He was more likable than Niko but they went too hard on the Southern gent speak and he was often just an idiot until it was convenient for him not to be.
This was one of my most anticipated books this year and I was disappointed. I just expected a more campy and spooky little tale where everyone meets up years after some youth mystery. We have a stay at home assassin, a washed up rock star that would have fit in with Daisy Jones and the Six, and a reality tv coal mine guy?
It was just so outlandish and it was all separate. You'd think the tragedy would happen and they'd all meet up but they were all doing this their own way through most of the book and it was like reading different stories.
I initially DNF but I hate to do that so I took the weekend and finished the audio and it was better than I initially gave it credit for but nowhere near as good as his other books.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read, listen and review! If you like a little more action than mystery, this is for you. It just wasn't my thing and I wish I'd known.
I’ve enjoyed Finlay’s other books but this one not so much. It was definitely more action-packed adventure than psychological suspense. I could totally picture this being a movie with Tom Cruise and Angelina Jolie. The premise was interesting and the writing wasn’t bad, but I never was really invested in the plot and didn’t care for the non-stop action. The multiple narrators were good and conveyed the urgency of the plot well. I did struggle keeping track of all the characters with the audio version.
Thank you Net Galley for this advanced readers audio listen. I have not been influenced or paid for my honest review.
Wow, this is going to be tough-like having to watch Ryan Seacrest announce his is moving on from Live! With Kelly and Ryan--I will neither confirm or deny that there were tears--I am not sure if I am being too dramatic by giving 3 stars, because I read it pretty quickly, but my main hiccup was the poor writing. Let me explain:
So a group of teens did something "bad" years ago, and now years later it seems like someone knows what they did and will stop at nothing to get their revenge.
I believe Finlay got stuck in the "teenage" mind, I felt like I was a reading a YA novel, it even comes equipped with some "That's What She Said" jokes to add to your repitoire-that is if you are a 7th grade boy. The writing was very choppy, everything felt over dramatized and goofy. The only chapters I could take seriously were the chapters told from Jenna's point of view. She was the only character that actually "grew up" and seemed sophisticated enough to carry out her job.
Donnie Danger (Every time I read that name I just got the skin crawlies). is the epitome of a has been that never was rock star. Again Finlay way over did the whole "ex rock star" , it gets old quick. I am not sure if he was trying to mock southern people by having him start every sentence with "Darlin'" uhhh.
I really did not care how all of the sudden in the middle of a chapter the author would switch to the past or a flashback, it was random and would just happen. It made for a very choppy reading experience....
If you take away all of the "Stuff" above, this book could have been a 4 star, because the idea plot and twist were good enough, but the writing and dramatics were just not for me. Im not giving up on Finlay and will definatly read more by him. This just didn't check the boxes for me.
Sad to say that I wasn’t a big fan of this one and I really wanted to love it. The multi poverty were a bit of a lot to take in and keep up with, but once I did it was interesting but all felt very related aside from what we learned in the synopsis. It was slow burn for most of the book while we got to establish the characters and what’s going on with each of them. It almost felt like each story was too good on its own to be infused like this? However overall it really fell short.
What Have We Done by Alex Finlay was quite the thriller and I highly recommend it. If you are looking for a book that will keep you guessing where the plot is going you should read this book. The different narratives and how the characters' lives were affected based on the incident that occurred when they were teens, were very well written. Alex Finlay did a great job of connecting readers with the characters and you begin to empathize with them. Great thriller with well-thought characters.
Great narrators and this audiobook was gripping.
A lot of characters and a lot of plot lines, so at times it was a bit difficult to keep it straight. That being said, it was very suspenseful and I really liked the story.
I went into this book mostly blind and I’m glad I did because it made it that much more twisty. I loved the multiple POV and the back and forth between their teenage days and the present. There were definitely twists I didn’t see coming, especially at the very end. It definitely kept me on my toes and I kept coming back for more. Th narration on the audiobook version was really well done.
I found this to be sort of slow at first just because you have to develop three characters. There are multiple narrators so it does get a little jerky at times but this was a great thriller that is more similar to an action thriller.
I’ve been looking forward to the release of this book since the announcement. I was super lucky to receive an audible ARC and to say I’m excited is an understatement. The multiple narrators for the audible version made my experience even more enjoyable as you’re able to quickly differentiate the multiple point of views. Also, I felt as if the narrators really added another layer of excitement to these well developed characters (Jenna, Nico, Donnie). I really enjoyed Finlay’s writing style, action packed, & gripping characters. This book grabs ya from the very beginning and takes you on a wild ride of thrills whilst the characters over come some serious odds. I sincerely hope the powers at be turns Mr. Finlay’s book into a movie. And highly recommend this book to anyone who’s into mystery/thrillers.

Thank you St. Martin’s Press & Minotaur Books, NetGalley, Macmillan Audio, & author Alex Finlay for the digital ARC. I’m super appreciative
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
I was excited to get approved for this audiobook. However I really didn’t enjoy it. It wasn’t quite a thriller like I had expected and there were just way too many different characters to keep up with.
I had high expectations and this fell waaaay short.
I will say the narrators did a good job.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Twenty five years ago a group of friends living in a group home did a bad thing. After all going their separate ways, they’re reunited now after one of them is dead, and someone is trying to kill the rest of them. This story is told from multiple POVs with four different narrators, so the listener experiences the past and present from many angles.
I enjoyed the narration, and having multiple character POVs. For the story, there was a lot going on that was a bit hard to keep track of. I had a few different theories throughout, some of which were close. But I also felt like I was missing a lot of development because there was too much going on with each character.
Overall, I’d give it 3 stars. It was enjoyable, but not my favorite.
Wooooof. That’s a no from me dawg. I did not want to suffer past 30%. I got some Last Thing He Told Me vibes with a lethal Carmen Sam Diego hot on the main characters tail while carting around her rude sassy stepdaughter (not the good sassy). Won’t be recommending. Not sorry ✌🏻
MIND BLOWN!! AMAZING!
Definitely ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️
I am still blown away by this book, it is a can’t put down until you have answered all your questions! The back and forth and swapping characters at first was a tad annoying but after it kicked off, it was breeze to follow!!
Narrators WERE AMAZING!!! The narrator for Jenna is by far my favorite!! She did an amazing job bringing Jenna to life!!
