This is a very twisty and action packed book! I loved that it had shorter chapters so it made you feel like you were flying through the book. The plot was very tense and had me on the edge of my chair the entire time. This was a first time read for me by this author and I will be reading more books by Alex Finlay.
What Have We Done is about one secret five kids share during their time at Savior House group home, 25 years ago. Flipping between Jenna (a former assassin turned housewife), Donnie (a drunk rocker) and Nico (a TV producer with a gambling problem), all three on very different paths in life, all end up in life threatening situations thanks to some killer twins. They must go back to the place where it all started - Chestertown. The twists kept coming until the very last page (literally). Short chapters flipping between characters, made the book fast paced and easy to follow. Although transitions between present day and the past could get lost with no real transition, other than a new paragraph. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and the twists seriously kept coming and coming. I recommend reading this book if you are a fan of fast paced thrillers that should definitely be made into a movie.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio & NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this digital ARC
Well I definitely wasn’t expecting an assassin story based on the description but that’s what I got. And while I didn’t hate it, had I known that going in, I probably wouldn’t have gone in 😂
Jenna, Donnie, Nico, Bennie, Annie, Artemis all bonded together when they were children living in a group home called the “Savior House”. Traumatic events tied them together for life and despite not staying in contact for 25 years, they are now being drawn back together because the big secret they’ve all been hiding has been revealed and someone is trying to kill them all off as a result.
The story is told from multiple POV and both current and past timelines so there’s a lot to keep up with so it’s easy to get lost if you don’t pay attention.
I really enjoyed Night Shift but this was kind of a miss for me so 2.5 stars. I did really enjoy the full ensemble cast of the audiobook however. They did a great job bringing the story to life.
Thanks to St. Martins Press and NetGalley for this audiobook arc in exchange for my review.
Thanks to NetGalley and Alex Finlay for an advanced audiobook copy. This audiobook just wasn’t my cup of tea. It was just middle of the road for me. Not sure if it was male narrators. The female was excellent.
Thank you MacMillan for the audio for Alex Finlay's What Have We Done. This is an effectively narrated suspense stories, the multiple POVs being nicely executed by Brittany Pressley; James Patrick Cronin; Jon Lindstrom; Maggie Thompson and the pacing matching the style and intensity Finlay brings to a story of adolescent secrets and present day murder and chaos. The story is filled with constant twists and uncertainty that comes together effectively to deliver a story ultimately about adolescence, trust, and family/friendship.
This is a great audiobook for thriller/suspense fans, for those new to Finlay''s work or for earlier fans. If you like books such as those from Balducci, Meltzer, Coben, and Grishman this one is for you.
I read an ARC of What Have We Done back in October of 2022 and loved it, but when I got the opportunity to listen to an advanced copy of the audio version, I couldn’t pass it up. Often times listening to a book can be a very different experience from reading it. (I can’t even begin to tell you how many books I have in both print and audio formats.) That is the case here, though I can honestly say you can’t go wrong no matter how you choose to consume this book.
Here are my original thoughts from when I read the book: The story revolves around a group of friends that were bonded by an event that happened 25 years ago. And now that event is coming back to haunt them. (Or hunt them!) The vast majority of chapters are told from the perspective of three main characters: a stay at home mom with an amazing backstory, a washed up rocker who can’t get his act together, and a quasi-celebrity reality TV producer drowning in debt. Three very different characters with one common problem. Someone wants them all dead! We also get a few chapters from some of the villains’ perspective, and I will they these villains are delightfully twisted. Little by little, as we see these characters struggling to survive, the past event that bonds them is revealed, culminating in a heck of a climax. I loved the pacing in the book, the near nonstop action. Finaly’s writing style reminds me of early Patterson. Short, relentlessly engaging chapters, practically demanding you to read on (or listen in this case) to see what happens next. If this were a movie (which I’d love to see) it would be a fun summer action blockbuster popcorn flick. I wholeheartedly recommend this to thriller fans.
Now when it comes to the audio, I have to say it’s incredibly well done. The audio book uses four narrators: Brittany Pressley, James Patrick Cronin, Jon Lindstrom, Maggie Thompson, and they each do a phenomenal job bringing the characters and story to life. In fact even already being familiar with the story, I found myself unable to stop listening and finished the book in barely a day and half. I’d like to thank Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to listen to an advanced copy of the audio version of Alex Finaly’s What Have We Done.
I was expecting a mystery and got an action packed book. There was no character development! There are many character POVs and different timelines. If you love action this book is for you, but as someone who thought they were getting mystery, this isn’t it.
Thank you to NetGalley for an audio ARC of What Have We Done.
I stopped reading at about 25%. I just can't get into a book about assassins. And the narration was just too animated for me. Maybe if I was reading a hard copy it would b different, but again, assassins. I also only cared about one of the POVs, but not enough to continue.
What Have We Done is the latest book from Alex Finlay and another winner! His stories are so well-plotted, complex, fast-paced and utterly enthralling. This dark thriller centers around five kids, who for various reasons, found themselves as wards of Savior House. This unsavory home for foster kids is a particularly dangerous place for girls, who have a tendency to go missing.
Fast-forward twenty-five years and each of the five friends, who have gone their separate ways in life, are unexpectedly reunited when each is individually targeted in an assassination attempt. Jenna, the one woman in the group, and most well-trained, is determined, with the assistance of her former friends, to find out the truth, secure their safely and put the past behind them at last.
What Have We Done is a compulsively readable, action-packed thriller filled with creepy, twisty plot points and deeply flawed characters. It’s an edge-of-your seat page-turner that is eerily entertaining and one you won’t want to miss!
This thriller is narrated by Brittany Pressley, James Patrick Cronin, Jon Lindstrom and Maggie Thompson. This group of voice actors truly add tension and personality to the tale and bring this story to life! I highly recommend the audio version of this book!
In the scope of the books I've ready by this author, I place this one in the middle. I really liked Every Last Fear, didn't care for The Night Shift. This one was okay, but nothing I'm going to remember for very long.
Attempts are made on the lives of three people: Jenna, a stay at home mom, Nico, a reality show producer, and Donny, an aging rock star. What do they all have in common? Back when they were kids, they lived in an abusive group home, and some things occurred there that they would rather no one else finds out about. But someone has, and they need to figure out who before it is too late.
The book overall is entertaining and I listened to the audiobook in less than a day. It's fast paced and kept me interested throughout. That's about as good as it gets though. The characters aren't well developed and when I got to the end and saw how it all fit together I thought "Is that really it?" Although the cat-and-mouse excitement in the present day was gripping, I just didn't feel like I got enough from the past to appreciate the motive of the bad guy(s) or even to understand the motivations of the characters.
The audiobook was presented well with individual narrators for the main players in the story. They were what kept me invested, I tried to go back and forth between reading the book on the page and listening and listening definitely ended up being the best way to experience this book.
In the end--decently entertaining story with good action, but not particularly memorable.
I wanted to love this but it kinda fell flat and I don't know why. The beginning was fun and got me hooked but then they took so long for the three of them to realize that they were all being targeted? Like idk if I had the same trauma bonding event and then 25 years later someone tries to kill me, I'm going to contact the others and be like "hey, you too?" I didn't like the plot twist, and the ending didn't get wrapped up nicely? Tell me why the bad guy comes back in the epilogue? Epilogues are supposed to be happy go lucky, happily ever after.
Part of it was still enjoyable and I did finish it but I think I over hyped myself, I've been craving a really good thriller, mystery, and murder kind of story but I just haven't picked up one that's satisfied it yet and I think that's what is making me over critical of books.
Thanks to Macmillan Audio for this ALC.
Our story starts 25 years ago with a dark secret amongst a group of teens in a group home. Fast forward to the present and they're all wildly successful, but someone is out to get them, bringing them back together for a reunion they didn't expect. If you love fast-paced thrillers, add this one to your list! Yes, it's totally over the top and you have to suspend belief, but this is a really fun read. The chapters are short and the POV rotates, which will leave you guessing in this cat-and-mouse game. LOVED the full-cast audio and highly recommend reading via audiobook on this one!
Read if you:
- want a fast-paced thriller
- like short chapters
- enjoy action movies
Five teens made it out of a horrible foster home from which kids disappear. Now, 25 years later, someone is out to get them.
This thriller is told in 3 POVs (the 3 MCs) and 2 timelines (now and then). I liked the past timeline more then the present one. This one definitely wasn't for me. I'm a bit tired of this kind of story, it has to be stellar to catch my interest because I'm under the impression I've read it MANY times before (ie something horrible happened when the characters were teens and it's now back to haut them). I found it repetitive, confusing, and too much was happening. You definitely have to suspend disbelief, and I found the ending fell flat (there was no big surprise/twist). All in all, it wasn't really a thriller (at least not in my book). I've read some other great reviews (and I loved Alex Finlay's 2 other books), so maybe it will be a better fit for you! I listened to the audio book, and the narration was great.
I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I have enjoyed every book Alex Finlay has written, this one is no different.
I could not stop listening. I was way more invested than I usually am and in fact, I did not want to stop to make lunch today.
I also did not figure this one out and I LOVE THAT!! Normally I figure everything out. I love that this story kept me stumped.
4.5 stars and the audio is great with several narrators.
I am so thankful to Macmillan Audio, NetGalley, St. Martin's Press/Minotaur Books, and Alex Finlay, for granting me an advanced e-copy and access to the audiobook before it's supposed to hit shelves on March 7, 2023.
Jenna, Donnie, and Nico all have a darkened past that's impossible for them to forget, especially when that secret gets unearthed and a hit gets put on them to terminate their mission: life. These former orphans grew up in a group home, headed for nowhere fast, with dozens of kids going missing, left and right.
Years later and they must do everything they can to survive, reunite to join forces, and unveil the motives for those trying to take them out, all while staying incognito within their now, seemingly ordinary lives.
This is a fast-paced multi-POV thriller and while it is certainly entertaining, I found the characters to be a little hard to believe. They all seemed to have interesting individual lives and I feel like they had so much potential, but they were written one-dimensionally. My favorite perspective to read from was Jenna as we were able to see a bit more from her than the other characters, next was Donnie and last was Nico. If you love a good action story with some mystery, you might really enjoy this, but I prefer more character development in my stories so I found this to be lacking at times.
Thank you Netgalley for providing a digital ARC.
This kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time and I didn't want to stop reading until I found out what was happening! There were twists and turns everywhere, but I ultimately fell in love with every single one of the three survivors that were being targeted. Jenna, the step mom who had a dark past she was trying to escape, Donnie the washed up rockstar and Niko the reality TV producer with a gambling addiction. They were all targeted and ultimately survived. Unfortunately, one of their crew didn't, and they had to find out what happened to Benny to go figure out who was targeting them.
Jumping back from then (when they were in the group home) and now timelines, I really had no idea which way the story was going to turn. I loved hearing about the friendships they had back then, but my heart ached for each and every one of them because of the hand they were dealt.
If you are looking for a face paced thriller that will leave you guessing to literally the very end, this book is for you.
The narrators were absolutely fantastic. They brought this story to life and did a great job.
Thank you to Macmillian, Alex Finlay and Netgalley for an early audio copy.
What Have We Done was a fast paced and action packed thriller! The plot was engaging from page one and never had a dull moment. This story had much more action than I had anticipated which was a really nice change of pace from the usual psychological thrillers. The characters were all written so well. While I can't say all of the were likeable, they were so real! I liked getting to know each of them as more of the story unraveled. The plot twists came out it nowhere and hit hard! I can't wait to read more from this author.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers from this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
Shout-out and big thanks to Macmillan for the approval! Side note Macmillan Audio has really come thru for me lately with my requests! Much appreciated 💕
This was an audio re-read for me. I thought the narration was fantastic. The cast of narrators all were great with their different characters. They kept me interested and invested in the character's outcomes and the story overall.
I still really liked this. Packed with action. There were some high-tension/ high-thrill moments throughout. There were some twists I didn't expect. The ending went a tad bit off the rails, but everything is wrapped up nicely with a big bow "For Annie, and the others" by the last page.
I forgot how much I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS ENDING, like obsessed with the last few chapters
From the very beginning we know there is a group of 5 kids living together in a foster home that have done something bad. Twenty-five years later someone is trying to kill them all off. And this is the story of them trying to figure out who knows their secret. Each of the characters has their own problems going on in current day life but are thrust back to that day twenty-five years ago when they did the terrible thing they just want to forget. I thought that the story progressed nicely, we are presented with flashbacks of the kids time in the foster home intermittently which help to build the backstory and tension. I wasn't ever bored and was surprised more than once.
What Have We Done hooked me and held my curiosity throughout the whole book. While the characters are unlikeable, they also almost felt like side characters to the story as it was so fast-paced and there were so many moving pieces. Although unlikeable, the narrators did a great job adding layers to the characters that might have been missing if I had read it myself.
Overall an interesting story with twists and many secrets. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a little mystery and suspense.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for letting me listen early!
