There are two timelines with two mysteries going on, featuring the same cast of characters. I couldn't care less about either of 'em. We don't spend enough time in the past to be invested in what happens to Marta, Annie, or the teens of Savior House. The flashbacks we receive only give us bits and pieces without enough emotion to make it meaningful. And the whodunit of the present timeline requires more suspension of belief than I'm capable of. I don't even know where to begin. The Corporation, the ditzy twins from hell... Insert eye roll. It was so unbelievable it was predictable, if you know what I mean.
Officially not a Finlay fan.
This is the first book I've read or listened to by alex finlay, and it was thrilling and had me on the edge of my seat and well written, and the narrators were great. The entire cast was. I had an early copy of the audiobook from netgalley, and i knew i needed this as soon as i saw it. And i really liked the novel. The only thing was that there were too many characters. i got a bit confused for a bit. I did like braittany pressley voicing the female character. It was well read.
This book had me pacing, just waiting to find out what happened next! I loved how fast paced it was, and really enjoyed the characters...even the bad ones!
Background: A group of friends (that grew up together in a group home) did something really bad 25 years ago that haunts them all. Now, they are all being separately hunted and corralled to uncover exactly what they did...and where.
This story is told from 3 different POV's - three of the kids that are now grown. The book gets right into it, it starts off with a bang!. I do wish there was a bit more character development, but it definitely didn't deter from the story-line.
The assassin(s) was also a fun curve-ball, as was one of the characters "allies". (Am I being too vague? I'm sorry but I don't want to give spoilers!) The ending tidied up nicely, but also quick.
Over-all, I give this book 4 stars, (And a full 5 stars for the narration!)
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ALC of this book!
Thoughts: This is my first Alex Finlay book and while I didn’t love it, there were elements I did really enjoy. I always love shifting narrators and dual timelines and I really liked the way we got so many perspectives. There is also a lot of action so if you are someone who loves a plot heavy story, I think you may like this one.
My primary criticism is that there wasn’t as much character development as I like, even in thrillers. I think some of the action came at the expense of the characters and really getting a sense of who they are at their core. And in my experience, when I don’t connect with any of the characters, by the time I reach the conclusion, I have very little vested interest in the resolution and what happens to those involved which sadly was the case here.
I listened to this one on audio and think the cast of narrators did an amazing job. I could listen to Brittany Pressley narrate the phone book. I would definitely suggest listening to the audiobook over reading the physical book.
Read if you like:
•domestic suspense
•action packed books
•dual time lines/POV
•short chapters
•plot heavy stories
Thank you Minotaur Books and Macmillan Audio for the ARC and ALC in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan audio for this ARC. I enjoyed how their were different narrators for each character and one of my favorite narrators Brittany Presley! I think What We Have We Done had a lot of promise but ultimately fell flat for me. The first 20% was interesting but the rest felt anticlimactic until the last 10%.
3 stars
After really enjoying Finlay's previous two books, I couldn't wait to jump into the audio version of this one. While it's an engaging enough read/listen, for me, it lacks the excitement and character connections of its predecessors.
There are three characters who switch perspectives here, and they are all tied by a past event and similar childhood circumstances...which are not typical. Readers really have to suspend disbelief and be willing to never get some of the answers they wish were readily available where this is all concerned. Out of the three characters, I found one developed enough to engage with early on, but as soon as I started to care about this character's situation, we were on to the next. Overall, it's challenging to get too invested in characters about whom readers know so little.
While I generally enjoy multi-perspective reads, in this case, that feature exacerbates the disconnect. The three central characters seem so separate, and by the time the connection becomes apparent, it's just tough to buy. Also, when someone has a truly unusual past as these folks all do, it's really surprising that some of them do not start putting specific pieces together sooner. I found some of these discrepancies tough to manage, too.
This is the kind of book I'm happy to listen to while going about my regular errands, cooking, and walking the dogs. It's entertaining, easy to follow, and includes some wild circumstances. That noted, for me, this one just does not reach the level of Finlay's other works. I'm looking forward to seeing a return to those earlier benchmarks in whatever Finlay produces next.
This book was amazing! I couldn’t put it down. Absolutely terrifying and thrilling at the same time. One of my favorite books!!
This was an interesting read. I did like the character development and the flashbacks of this suspense novel. It did seem slightly outlandish but overall kept me on the edge of my seat and very eager to learn more about the mystery both in the characters present and past.
This book was a miss for me. I liked the short chapters but the twists weren’t good or original.
Thank you NetGalley for eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a wild ride. If there is one thing I love, it’s a group of adults who are brought back together because of a traumatic event they shared in childhood. And this was done really well.
A trio of childhood friends are brought back together as adults under a strange and deadly circumstances. Having survived their early years in the same group home, forging a bond after devastating events, they go off to live vastly separate, vastly different lives. Now, 25 years later, they are back and that can only mean one thing… someone knows what they did.
I thought the pace of this was great. I really loved the characters, even some of the “bad” ones. This one was explosive, and surely not one to miss.
The narration in this book was great. I flew through this one because the narrators were so on point that time got away from me. Before I knew it, the story was over and I enjoyed every minute.
3.5☆ - As far as thrillers go, this one was ok. This is my first book by this author. I did like different narrators for each person. I also did appreciate the twists. I liked it, just not as much as some others.
