What Have We Done
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Genre: Thriller
Author: Alex Finlay
GR: 3.60
I requested a digital advanced readers copy from NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press and Macmillan Audio and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.
My Thoughts: I was fortunate enough to have the audio and kindle version of the book. I preferred the audio. Britany Pressley is a great narrator, the other two were good as well but Pressley is one of my favorites. Finlay is one of my favorite thriller authors. We follow the lives of what appears to be three different people, but we find how their lives intertwined. The premise is very interesting, a crime that occurs from the past puts a contract killer on the hunt in a very dangerous cat and mouse game.
The story is narrated by Jenna, Donnie, and Nico, from their POV. The three characters were very easy to follow. Jenna is a stepmom of two daughters, happily married. Donnie is a ‘has been’ rock star, holding on to his fame. Finally, Nico produces various things on TV. The characters were not who they seem to be, mysterious, and were creatively woven throughout the novel. The characters could have been expanded just a bit more. The author’s writing style was suspenseful, twisty, creative, and brilliant. Things that happen in the book don’t seem possible, however, this is fiction, so you do have to suspend your belief, but it is worth it. Finlay does a great job with detail and creating the tension in the novel. The flow and pace are fantastic, I could not put down the book.
Finlay knows how to write thrillers. He weaves suspense with mystery and keeps you on the edge of your seat, with a book that is impossible to put down. The book is gripping, action packed, and very enjoyable. The only thing I would have like to see if more development of the Savior House. I highly recommend picking up the audiobook!
I really like this book. I liked the mystery in a mystery. I like the twins, they made me laugh. I like that I didn't guess everything that was happening, actually I was no where even close to being right. This audio is a good escape for a few hours. This is my first book by Alex Finlay, I will be listening to his other audiobooks.
Alex Finlay has become an auto buy author for me. I love everything he writes and can’t seem to get enough of them. Serious book hangover after this one. I just keep thinking about the story !!
One of my most anticipated books of 2023 and I got the pleasure of receiving an audiobook from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review!! Yesssss!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Where to begin with this one … let’s start by saying this was again highly anticipated, mesmerizing and heart pounding at times Alex Finlay novel! This was all wrapped up nicely in a bow but dropped a star because it felt a little rushed and I would have loved some more character development.
Alex Finlay is a great storyteller!! The audiobook narration mixed with the storyline fit together perfectly! I highly recommend the audiobook!! It’s definitely a binge worthy book!!
What Have We Done is very much aligned with the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” genre. If you like multiple perspectives, deep deep conflict, and a real mystery, this is for you!
This is a twisty and action packed book. I loved that it had shorter chapters so it made you feel like you were flying through the book. Sometimes with longer chapters you feel like some thrillers just drag on. But I didn't feel that way with this book. This was a first time read for me by this author and I will be reading more books by Alex Finlay. I also listened to this Audiobook and I really enjoyed that.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martins Press (Minotaur Books) for allowing me to read this ARC in advanced.
I absolutely loved the author’s previous novel, The Nighy Shift, so I may have hyped this one up a bit. I enjoyed it for the most part, but found some of the pacing to be too slow moving for me, and I didn’t connect with the jumping timelines.
*many thanks to Minotaur and Netgalley for the gifted copy for review
Alex Finlay is consistently entertaining and the full-cast narration makes this a particular treat. A recommended purchase for collections where thrillers are popular.
First, I LOVED the full cast of narrators for this one. It really gave me a sense of who was speaking, versus one lone person doing all the voices and narration for every individual's chapters.
I enjoyed this book a lot, but did find some of the characters stories to be more interesting than others. I found Jenna's story to be one of the most interesting, and the chapters that I most looked forward to while reading this book. I felt like the other characters were a little more "boring" but they did all come together in a spectacular way.
This book is in no way a "believable" book, but once you got past how far fetched the situation was, it made for a very entertaining read. I was guessing throughout the book, and the ending was not at all what I ended up guessing!
Thank you to the Author, Publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
25 years ago best friends Jenna, Donnie, and Nico lived together in a group home for orphans called Savior House. After several girls disappear from the home, Savior House is closed and the trio were sent their separate ways. Years later, they are reunited, but not under happy circumstances. You see, they have a secret along with 2 others, Ben and Artie. Ben is a judge and he is found murdered, and each of the three friends also has an attempt on their lives. Does someone know their secret from years ago? Who is targeting the friends and why? To save themselves, they must revisit their past, a past they have all tried to bury.
I have enjoyed the previous two books I read by Alex Finlay and this one was not exception. I am going to start this review by saying, this is a book that is pure fun, a popcorn book that you just need to go with, suspend belief and just enjoy. The story is told from the POV of Jenna, Nico and Donnie. The attempts on their lives were fantastical with the killer bumbling each one. They all survived and now they are angry. What Have We Done is filled with nonstop action with multiple plot twists. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, there would be a twist that would take me off in another direction. I loved the three main characters and was rooting for all of them. Donnie is a down and out musician, an alcoholic that is close to washed up. Nico is a miner on a reality show, but he used to work for an Irish mobster. Jenna is a mom with a wonderful understanding husband, a stepdaughter and one daughter of her own. She has a huge secret that is shared in the story. I found all the characters to be well developed. I am not saying anymore about this story except to recommend it to those who enjoy a story full of action, twists and likable characters that you cheer for. If you are unable to suspend belief and enjoy a story that is a bit over the top, then this one will probably not be for you. I did a read/listen with this story and enjoyed both formats, but loved how the audiobook brought the story to life. With a full cast: Brittany Pressley, James Patrick Cronin, Jon Lindstrom, and Maggie Thompson all adding their voices to the story, it is hard not to become immersed in the action.
The kind of book you can’t put down. It is so well written, and the mystery and twists and turns had me intrigued and glued to the pages from start to finish. This is an addictive thriller with an ending that you will not see coming. Love Alex Finlay and everything he writes!
This book was really good! I like how it kinda gave little bits of info here and there so you didn’t have to wait until the end for the big reveal. I liked the different back stories of each character being revealed as the book went on. It’s an interesting read about how different people deal with different childhood traumas. Good story overall.
Omg this author did it again! Did not disappoint! This is definitely one I’ll be suggesting to everyone.
Of course my favorite character was the villain(s). This story seemed really chaotic at times, like there were too many characters ,and also very far fetched. I didn’t really think anyone was like-able and maybe that’s why I didn’t connect as well with the characters. I think if they had removed on extra POV, it would have been much more smooth and less chaotic, but on the flip side that might take away from the significance of the story overall. I am glad I listened to it because I had been seeing it pop up all over, so thank you @netgalley @stmartinspress & @minotaur_books for the ARC audio!
25 years ago a group of friends in a group home did something that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. Shortly after the home was closed and the friends were all separated and lost touch. Present day it appears that someone else knows something about that day 25 years ago and may be looking to kill each of the friends one by one.
This was ok but not super thrilling. There was a lot going on and a lot of different people being introduced throughout the story. There was action throughout but I still felt like this was a very slow burn. A lot of things were unbelievable and felt very juvenile. I did end up really enjoying the ending and it certainly caught me by surprise. There were a lot of details throughout that were unnecessary including the epilogue. I will give this a 3.5 rounded down.
Thank you to NetGalley and Alex Finlay for allowing me to listen to an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I loved Alex Finlay’s “Night Shift”, and it took me no time to read. I was drawn to Alex’s new book for that reason, and I really love Brittany Pressley as a narrator. I will say though, What Have We Done was not for me. This book took me several days to listen to.. I didn’t care about any of the characters and took over 25% in to even get into the story.
I really wanted to like this one, and I’ll definitely still try Alex’s future books.
“What Have We Done” is a thriller written by Alex Finley. The first half of it is slower as it builds up to the main event. But once the action really kicks in and the backstory is all told, it really takes off. The content and storyline were both pretty interesting. It just took a lot to build up to the event at hand. I really enjoyed the narrator but preferred to read this book rather than listen to it.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for allowing me the chance to listen and review this title!
Many thanks to my partners at @macmillan.audio and minotaur_books for the #gifted copies.
Pop that corn and get ready to be entertained. The past seeks its revenge in Finlay’s newest thriller.
Years ago, friends at an orphanage did the unthinkable Now, all this time later, a contract killer is hunting each one down. But who hired the hitman? And who, if any, will survive?
There’s no doubt Finlay can pen a binge-worthy popcorn thriller. I was captivated from the beginning and couldn’t stop reading until I knew! His writing is faced paced and electrifying.
Out of all the characters, Jenna was my favorite. I loved the juxtaposition between her past and present. I found myself racing through other POVs to get back to hers. I’d have loved an entire story based off of her alone.
As the tension builds, so does the need to suspend belief. And as action packed as the book is, the ending fell a bit flat to me.
Because of that, I didn’t love this one as much as I have Finlay’s previous works. But I’ll still be the first to grab his next release.
🎧 I love a good full cast narration, and this one did not disappoint! Brittany Pressley (a fav), James Patrick Cronin, Jon Lindstrom, and Maggie Thomas made this already explosive storyline even more dynamic. Definitely grab the audio for this one.
Compared to Finlay's previous books, this is much heavier on the action. It's great, if you like your thrillers more caper-y than realistic; I prefer the latter. Still a compelling listen.
This was a great action packed thriller from Alex Finlay! I found it very entertaining and absolutely did not wan to stop reading until the end! I really enjoyed all the twists we discovered. I think the flashbacks felt slightly out of place at times and got a little confusing. Overall a great read!! I also really appreciated the full cast narration as it helped with the changing of perspectives.
Thanks to Net Galley and Macmillan Audio for the ARC of What Have We Done
