I loved this! A quick read with so many twists coming from all directions! I finished this one in 2 days! #AlexFinlay knocked it out of the park! #mustread!
@britpressley, #JamesPatrickCronin,
@Jonlindstrom & #MaggieThompson are the best narrators for the multiple character viewpoints!
Thank you, Alex Finlay, @Macmillan Audio, Minotaur Books, St Martins Press & Netgalley for my advance ecopy and #audiobook! All opinions are my own!
This novel is phenomenal! It forces readers to revisit that never-ending question, "Can you escape your past?" Most amazingly, the ending was completely unpredictable. I loved it!
This was a fast paced, action packed read. The premise is interesting, but a bit outlandish. While there is a lot of action and even some humor thrown in, the characters felt two dimensional. I feel like the book had to rely on the over the top premise to make up for the flat characters. I liked the fast pacing, I liked the assassin thing, and I found it to be a quick read. Action usually isn't my thing, but I read this after some flops and the change of pace was fun.
Alex Finlay does it again!! Total page-turning mystery with lots of layers and well executed movement through two timelines and different perspectives.. The kids of the group home Savior House are grown up and surprisingly successful, but each have their struggles and they all share one major secret. The way Finlay unfolds this story-- that at surface is focused on someone trying to kill each of these old friends, is full of twists and surprises. Sharing multiple POVs - as a reader I was most locked in on the character of Jenna, who maybe had the most outrageous exit from the group home and years to follow.. Fun story, q1uick pacing, very enjoyable.
VERY quick and enjoyable as an audiobook with a cast of narrators anchored by Brittany Presley, who is always amazing.. Just the type of book I like in audio!
Alex Finlay is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. What Have We Done by Alex Finlay was cinematic and unputdownable. The exquisite storytelling and pacing are painfully perfect. Told from multiple POVs but the POVs added depth to the plot points and did not distract from the story. I absolutely love the writing, it was compulsively readable. Great story, with well-developed characters and twists and turns for days. You'll love this book!
I received a review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley for my honest review. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
I felt let down by this book. There just wasn’t enough twists in the story line to keep me interested. Different points of view in different timelines was a very interesting way to tell the story but some times it was a little difficult to keep up.
This was an entertaining thriller but it lacked depth
We have a small group of protagonists in this story, each of them have found their own path in life. Donnie is an aging rockstar, Nico is weighed down by his gambling habits, and Jenna has found peace with her new family despite her killer past. The three of them are forever bound together by the suffering they endured at their teen group home, and the choices they made during their stay there.
There is a fun cast of characters besides Jenna, Nico, and Donnie. We have Jenna’s assassin mentor, the hilariously annoying contract killers, moody bandmates, Irish mobsters, and one of the richest men in the world.
Following the death of one of the old group home members, who grew up to become a federal judge, a conspiracy against Jenna, Nico, and the rest of the crew begins. Attempted murders are abound and steadily we learn more and more about the history of the group home, including the disappearance of a shocking number of teenage girls that eventually led to the closing of the home.
While there are a lot of dramatics in this book, many of the characters and plot just fall flat to me. How convenient that first off, all these kids from a group home became rockstars, federal judges, tv show directors, and world class assassins, but also the main antagonists are supposed to be crazy killers yet do a terrible job at actually, you know, killing.
Despite the issues with depth and reality, this book still accomplishes the goal of entertainment
I really enjoyed listening to this multicast. The story takes a while to get going because we are introduced to a variety of characters. They can be hard to keep track of so the different voices do help. The story keeps you engaged and the epilogue is a nice wrap up for some characters as well as a cliff hanger for another novel.
Now to go back and read Alex Finley's other novels...
First of all, the narrators for the novel were excellent. Their various voice inflections and characters that they embodied were done seamlessly. The story as a whole was very engaging. There were a few components that made it seem a little too farfetched, namely that five teens that were orphaned/abandoned and placed in an abusive home called Savior House and yet all become very successful was a bit much. But overall the story was well-paced and intriguing.
Sooo many characters and I still don’t quite understand how it all tied together? I was so confused for the first 80% and became even more confused at the end when everything was revealed. Not a favorite but I am imagine others might enjoy it
I've now read all of Alex Finlay's books and unfortunately, this was my least favorite. It felt very different than his previous books, which isn't always a bad thing, but it just didn't work for me. What Have We Done was very action packed, but there wasn't a lot of character development. I've just finished the book and I can't easily recall the different characters. It was fun, but overall forgettable.
Thank you to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for my ARC audio copy of this book!
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel!! This book had me intrigued from the very beginning. Twenty-five years ago, five friends, all 15 years old, are standing over a shallow grave in the middle of the night. One of these friends holds a gun, and they all proceed to take turns shooting into the grave. What are they doing, and what led them to this point?
Cut to present day, and we are introduced to three of the friends for their POV, Jenna, Niko, and Donny. What happened 25 years ago is haunting them, and they all find themselves in mortal danger. Alex Finlay does a fantastic job of creating these characters who you can’t exactly make yourself love, but you don’t hate either. They are complex, and they are well crafted.
I enjoyed the way the author told this story using the present day and flashbacks to 25 years ago. My only issue with this, and it may be because I listened to the audio, is that I couldn’t always tell when a flashback started. I sometimes thought we were still in present day and would have to back up to figure out where the flashback started. Again, this may be because I listened to the audio.
I did enjoy the audio narration, it kept me intrigued and was well done overall! This book was enjoyable for me, I was intrigued the entire time and ended up binging the audio. This truly is a thrilling and suspenseful novel; one of my favorites of the year so far!
Thank you to NetGalley and Alex Finlay for my honest feedback and review.
Unfortunately this book did not hit as a mystery or thriller. In the very beginning we're told what happened. None of the characters had any real depth to them. It felt like I was reading an abridged version of someone's character line ups for their future books. I wish I could give this more stars but this was just not the book for me. I did enjoy the narrator however.
While the story was compelling and interesting enough, I found the ending frustrating. Additionally, like Finlay’s other work, some of the language was problematic in the way he described BIPOC folks in the narrative. Overall I enjoyed Night Shift more.
Thank you NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to listen to this audiobook. This was overall a good story. The house for parentless teens ends up with a group who bond with each other and try to keep each other safe from the house’s owners son. And other terrifying things that cause girls to go missing?? Their only way to escape is to end this nightmare. The five are then bonded forever by a terrible secret. They all move on with their lives. I would have personally loved to hear more about Jenna’s life and things she did before she got married and had a family. When one of the 5 ends up dead and an attempt made on two others, they all end up right back where it all started. Are they going to finally find out what’s going on and who is trying to kill them??? Gotta read it to find out!
Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for my audio review copy in exchange for an honest review! I really enjoy Alex Finlay’s thrillers! They are always fast paced, full of twists that you don’t see coming, and hard to guess the ending! His one was no exception! The chapters were short, which adds to the overall atmosphere of the story, and is perfect for thrillers. My only drawback, was there were many POV’s which made it hard to keep track of what was going on.
This book was a wild ride, right from the start! It was incredibly fast paced, and difficult to put down. I felt like the storyline was easy to follow for an audio version, which is always good, because I'm usually multi-tasking while enjoying an audiobook.
I felt like there should have been more background on the four characters prior to diving into their attempted murders, as I was a little lost on who was who when I first started listening. Maybe that would have been more easily identifiable by reading the print version. I do feel like this came together as we got further along, and had some of the additional flashbacks to their teen lives.
I really enjoyed the ride of finding out about the adult in their lives that ultimately tricked them about the missing teens. That really was an unknown twist, which I should've seen coming as authors don't usually introduce characters like this one without a reason for moving the plot point forward.
I felt like a lot of the lives of these teens as adults was pretty unbelievable, albeit interesting. They were all incredibly successful in very wildly, different ways, which I had a hard time with.
3.5 out of 5 stars!
Alex Finlay's newest thriller centers around teens (Jenna, Donnie and Nico) who met in a group home and were bonded together by a dark secret. As adults, they all live very different lives and are still impacted by the trauma of their childhoods. Their past comes back to haunt them in the form of contract killers and they race to figure out who is after them. The thriller is fast-paced and engaging from start to finish and though the character development is not nuanced I was invested in the outcome. I predicted the twists pretty quickly , but overall enjoyed the multiple POVs and the cast of narrators in the audiobook enhanced the reading experience.
Thank you so much @macmillan.audio and @netgalley for my complimentary audiobook. I was thrilled to receive this!
My thoughts are my own.
I thoroughly enjoyed this intense thriller!
One summer, a group of teenagers does something terrible, but it is something that they believe is necessary; and then they vow never to talk about it.
Twenty-five years later, Jenna, Donnie, and Nico have each moved on to live productive lives. But they have never forgotten their troubled youths. They are no longer in touch, but suddenly, someone is trying to kill them and they reunite to find out what is going on. Soon, they find themselves in a deadly situation involving blackmail, murder, assassins, and deception. Could the killer be one of them, or someone who knows the truth?
The main characters were vulnerable and likable! I did not want any one of them to be the killer! The action was nonstop. The chapters alternated viewpoints and I was equally invested in each storyline. The conclusion was perfect and what I have come to expect from this author.
The audio format has four narrators, which really adds to the enjoyment of listening! I truly could not stop listening!
Read this if you enjoy thrillers that keep you turning the pages (or listening) to see what happens next!
Short synopsis: A stay at home mom, reality TV star, and a cruise ship singer all have a shared past. When they are all targeted by someone trying to murder them, 25 years later they’ve realized their past has come to haunt them.
My thoughts: This was very bingeable, the writing was done in such a way I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next, and I loved the short chapters.
It started out strong, and I enjoyed Jenna’s character being a stay at home mom with a past in assassination. I think out of the different perspectives hers was my favorite.
I didn’t see the twist coming, but I felt like the beginning grabbed my attention so fast and towards the end I was less interested. I did feel like the flashbacks could have been done better, I found myself struggling to figure out if i was in the current timeframe or the past.
That being said, I will definitely continue to read books by this author because I have enjoyed them so far.
The narration was very well done, and I felt like the different perspectives were easy to follow with the different voice actors.
