I enjoyed this book, especially the multiple POV. This was a good one to listen on audiobook. Five people, now grown up, who were all in a teenage foster home together, all have created amazing lives for themselves. They were all involved with something horrific and buried the secrets in the past. Someone is out to get each one of them. I do typically enjoy stories where old friends come back together, this one seemed to just miss the mark. The story was entertaining although parts of this book didnโt feel realistic. There were some twists and turns that caught me off guard. It was a quick read with short chapters that I found myself wanting to finish. Overall, it was just OK. I didnโt overly love it, but I didnโt dislike it either.
4.5 Stars
Finlay is SUCH a clever writer.
I was absolutely thrilled to get to read and review this. I loved the writing and characters in this story line. All roads lead home. The pieces of this story come together and will make you question every one. Some of his best writing yet.
Audiobook Narrator selection was genius. I love a good host of narrators to keep you guessing.
Big thanks to Net Galley, Alex Finlay, and Macmillan Audio / Minotaur Books for the opportunity to review this audiobook production.
This is my first time reading any of Alex Finlay's work. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this book. The book did seem a little bit too long, as I think some of the plot points could of been shortened, but overall the story was really good. I didn't care for any of the characters, but a lot of them were not lovable anyway so they were written nicely. I thought I had the ending figured out... turns out I was wrong!
The narrators were great! I've heard most of them before so I'm a bit bias, lol.
Thanks Netgalley!
I enjoyed this book. It had a great plot, interesting characters and great narration. The book has three storylines: Jenna the ex-secret agent in DC. Donnie, a has been rock star in PA, and Nico a tv producer in West Virginia with a huge debt.
I loved following these characters around through the streets of their town especially Jenna. I absolutely loved hearing about the streets in DC and Virginia. I have never been to Capital Grille and can't wait to go there now. The author did a great job with the characters and giving us insight into the towns. I actually did not know much about West Virginia, so hearing about their coal mines was very interesting and very intriguing to follow along in a story plot. The book is a face paced quick ride. At times some characters could last longer than others and could be overdrawn, but I am sure it was pivotal to building character. Personally, I would have liked to see a little more of Nico's character and a little less of Donnie, who at times quite annoyed me. He is like one of those guys that gets 1000 chances yet keeps repeating the same fate. I think we all know this guy. You root for him at first, but after the 999 time, you realize he has worked to repeat that karma. My favorite character was Jenna by far! I really love when there are various timelines happening at once that all leads to a bigger connection. I also loved that we get the POV of each character through their eyes. This was definitely a great read, and I would recommend it to anyone who loves thriller, mystery, CIA and secret double agent movies or books.

I love this kind of story, it kept me at the edge of my seat and guessing from start to finish. Full of secrets, twists and turns, fast-paced and so clever. Loved it!
Thank you Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for this gifted copy.
#FirstLine ~ PROLOGUE : Twenty-five years ago - At the top of a knoll through a break in the trees, five teenagers stand at the edge of a shallow grave.
This book was FANTASTIC. A new favorite. It was so perfectly plotted. I loved the varied perspectives. It was intense, well paced and satisfying. I never quite knew what was going to happen, which made it all the more fun. What a wild ride!!! A must read for all thriller lovers!
Goodness, that was a wild ride. "What Have We Done" is the latest from Alex Finlay, who has made many fans with his previous "Every Last Fear" and "Night Shift." Based on the synopsis and his previous works, I was expecting a pretty straightforward thriller, but this book was much more in the adventure/spy lane than described.
There are a number of characters in this novel, including two timelines that mash together, often without warning. Jenna, Nico, Donnie, and Ben were all children in foster care at the Savior House when they were teens โ a place that seemed to have its own share of abuse and trauma. While there, they shared part in an unspeakable deed that they've since tried to forget. It seems someone hasn't forgotten, though, because now in the current era, they are trying to kill them off one by one โ and in Ben's case, they've succeeded.
There is solid pacing and intrigue in this novel, which kept me engaged throughout. Where it faltered for me a bit was in the over-caricatured characters and the overly-complicated double-crossed ending, which was so rushed that I just about missed what had really happened. I did still enjoy this enough that I'm happy to give Finlay another shot with a future work.
The story follow three best friends who all ended up at a group home as adolescents. They form a friendship and have some secrets that they keep together. We follow the story with them in the group home 25 years ago, as well as them in current time in their adult hood. The chapters are separated by characters as we begin to unravel what mysterious occurred at the group home as well as who is attempting to uncover these secrets and why.
This story had a great tone and I really enjoyed Jennas chapters. I was hooked initially but as the story went on it felt less fleshed out and messy. New characters were introduced that felt bland to me and over all because of the odd pacing I felt myself caring less and less about the story line.
Overall, the book is a 3/5 stars for me. Thank you to NetGalley for the digital ARC.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the free e-audio book in exchange for an honest review.
Firstly, the audio version of this book was very well done. Kudos to the narrators Brittany Pressley, James Patrick Cronin, Jon Lindstrom, and Maggie Thompson. I found that I was so engrossed in this book while listening and that was partly due to the voices of the narrators.
Jenna, Nico, Donnie, Benny and Art spent time as kids in the abusive group home, Savior House. Each was placed there for different reasons through the system and it was not a safe haven. Several of the girls living in the home went missing. Fast forward 25 years and all 5 are living their own exceptionally glamorous lives when one of them is killed and the others are targeted. Is it because their childhood secret has come back to haunt them? Who is pulling the strings and why?
This is a twisty thriller with suspense and dramatic events. The characters are well developed but each one leads a wildly successful life which pushes the envelope of believability for me. A federal judge, a contract killer, a rockstar, a silicon valley millionaire and a successful reality show producer, all a bit much to believe.
However, its an entertaining and colorful story if you buy into the characters and their lives. It is a fast paced mystery that I did not figure out until the latter half of the book. Still worthy of a read!
Highly recommend the audio book! 3.5 stars rounded up.
Hearing much love for Alex Finlay, I decided to listen to What Have We Done, his latest thriller.
Three characters have paths that connect themselves to Savior House and the body they buried there. All three believe that the past is in the past. But that all changes when they each are attempted to be murderered. Running for their lives, they must be reunited to save everything they've ever known. But will they be too late for others to discover what they've done?
I enjoyed listening to multi cast audiobooks that have dual point of views. However; i felt that some chapters were unnecessary or dragged on while others brought on that "aha" moment of suspense. I enjoyed the narrator who voiced Jenna and the twins. But, I was not able to connect with the male narrator as I felt the voice didn't fit the atmosphere needed. Overall, I was able to figure out the mystery halfway through and listened to find out how Alex Finlay tied it together.
I really enjoyed the beginning of this book, but the plot became increasingly hard to follow. This one may be better consumed as a physical book, but the different characters and plot points did not seem clearly executed.
The idea that Jenna was a previous hit woman was super unrealistic to me and kept pulling me out of the story. The ending was also wrapped up too neatly, making the entire story extremely underwhelming.
3.5-3.75 stars
This fast-paced, action-packed story was all over the place pretty much right from the beginning. I was expecting a sort of typical murder mystery/thriller/return-of-the-past book, and although it had elements of those pieces, it was more of an action/adventure thriller. Some sections of the plot required real suspension of disbelief, and a few details felt kind of convoluted when trying to bring multiple perspectives together, but all together, they created an intriguing and exciting story, and I did enjoy it.
The first part had me hooked on the stories as it was being told through multiple POVs. At that point, I didnโt know how they were connected nor where it was going to go.
There was one storyline that I preferred more than the others and I wished it would have been given precedence.
The bulk of the middle section (part 2) was boring to me, and it caused my interest to wane.
The ending Part 3, was the twisted conclusion of why they were brought together in such murderous fashion after 25 years being apart.
All in all, it was a decent read especially if you enjoy multiple POVs. 3.5 stars
Wow. This book had me holding my breath. This was an action movie, like mission impossible and Jason Bourne all in one. This book was so fast paced that sometimes I wish we could have slowed down to know the characters a little more. Multiple POVs with great narrators for each. I am never let down by Finley!
Oh man I was on the edge of my seat from the first few minutes of this book!!
I swear I literally had anxiety at times in this book waiting to see what was going to happen!! Constant suspense until the very end!
I enjoyed Alexโs book The Night Shift and this one was so good too!
I thought the narrators all did a great job! Flowed nicely and enjoyable to listen to.
Finlay has done it again!!! This book had all the mystery, twists and small drama that I love in my thrillers! I love the POVs and surprisingly, all the characters! I read on my kindle, and then immediately listened to the audiobook!
I found the book ok. It took until halfway through the book for the plot to make any sense. I was confused for much of the book. Iโm still not sure what exactly was going on with Jenna, Donnie and Nico. I guess they knew what really happened at the group home and the people wanting to kill them wanted to get revenge on them for not doing anything to stop it.
I was very intrigued by the beginning and set-up of the characters in this book. Three people with a connected past all befall unusual circumstances where ultimately they are being chased and sought after to be killed. Sounds fun right? The ultimate race/chase for your life!
As the reader, we are flashed back and forth in time without and dates on the page, so it did get confusing at times keeping the many characters straight amongst the time period. Then the book continued to what felt like a non-stop action movie where the action took the plot rather than the history and storyline.
I ended up feeling pretty meh and underwhelmed by the book. One of those that started out with a lot of promise but petered out half way and limped to the end. Because it was an audiobook it helped push the narrative along for me, but I found I just didn't care by the end.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the complimentary audiobook.
I enjoyed this one; my first by this author. This book is a great illustration of why this genre is called 'thriller'. I wish I had a less hackneyed phrase to use than "breakneck speed" but that describes perfectly what the pace of this book was like.
Five friends who, while in a group home as kids, did an unspeakable thing are reunited twenty-five years later when one of them dies under mysterious circumstances, and someone seems to be trying to kill all the remaining four. The reasons for the spate of attempts on their lives is revealed interspersed with flashbacks to the group home, a place that helped shape who each of them would later become. This is definite movie-material, but honestly, even without the visuals, the unfolding of the story was so vibrant it jumped off the page.
This is a great read if you want to explore a genre you never thought you would like. I generally don't intuitively pick up a thriller when looking for a new read, because I guess I had the prejudice that it will be like an action film-heavy on the explosive moments, but light on character development. And character development is what I like most about reading. By Alex Finlay gave plenty of both, seeming into intuitively know when to lighten up on the action and give us a little bit of the interiors and motivation of the main characters so that in the end, there is a perfect balance of crazy situations and explanations for why the characters are in those crazy situations to begin with as well as plenty of backstory to explain why they react the way they do to the craziness.
Will definitely read more of this writers work and of this genre. Recommended for seasoned thriller readers, and for those who may want to explore something new.
Audiobook note: Excellent narrator; the kind who doesn't get in the way of the story by being overly dramatic, but lets the drama of the story speak for itself.
Thank you #NetGalley for the free audiobook. #WhatHaveWeDonebook
