It was refreshing to read a thriller set in a different place, with characters who are not investigators/journalists. Having said that I don't know if its much of a thriller. The pace was mediocre and the suspense mild.
The twists i didn't expect but it wasn't jaw dropping by any means.
I also wasn't aware the book is about domestic violence until well into the story.
Thank you, Netgalley, publisher, and author for the ARC (a year late.)
I usually love Catherine McKenzie’s novels, but I truly struggled to get all the way through this book. I look forward to her next release in hopes the story is more enjoyable and more of a suspense/thriller for me.
Thank you NetGalley and Atria Books for this ARC!
Full review to come on Goodreads and Amazon. Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for a review copy
HAVE YOU SEEN HER was thrilling and atmospheric! The inclusion of news articles, social media posts, etc made it feel immersive and I loved that part of the book. I didn't feel like the romance subplot added anything to the story. HAVE YOU SEEN HER was my first book by Catherine McKenzie and it won't be the last.
My thanks to Atria books, Catherine McKenzie and Netgalley.
This was definitely my kind of story. I loved every minute of it!
I've developed a soft spot in my old age for books that make me feel at home. And the part of California where this book takes place is very much home territory-ish!
This was a fantastic story and whodunit!
Probably going to have to read more from Ms. McKenzie in the future!
Thank you to Netgalley, Atria books, and Catherine McKenzie for an advance copy of Have You Seen Her in exchange for an honest review. If you're looking for an atmospheric, suspense novel- look no further then Have You Seen Her. I literally devoured this book in two sittings and was very happy with where the story took me. This was told in multiple POVs but every POV seemed to flow together very well and I never found myself confused. Cassie was a great main character who the author used to really suck the reader in during the first couple of chapters. Without giving to much away, I feel as the author did a good job linking characters together to help tie up the loose ends of the end of the story. I think this would be the perfect book to read over a bonfire or during a camping trip. This one is out now! 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5 for GR.
My Honest Review
Have You Seen Her
By Catherine McKenzie
This is a very atmospheric thriller, multi-pov, & unreliable narrator mystery had some decent twists. This one was a bit of a let down. So many characters, so many backstories, just fell a bit flat for me.
📚Expected Release June 27, 2023📚
Thank you Atria, NetGalley, & the brilliant author Catherine McKenzie. I’m super appreciative for the opportunity.📚
This was a first for me by this author so I wasn't sure what to expect when coming into reading this one. Its based off three different women who all come together along a journey in Yosemite. I do wish more could of happened sooner rather than towards almost the end of the book. The use of two different timelines was nice and gave the story a different feel to it but yeah this one was a average read for me. I am sure I will try giving this author another chance in the future.
I started reading this, but I couldn't get into it. I've enjoyed some of Catherine McKenzie's past novels but the premise for this one felt so outlandish — and yet the introduction moved so slowly — that I decided it wasn't for me.
“Have You Seen Her” by Catherine McKenzie offers an intriguing backdrop of Yosemite National Park as it delves into a web of suspense and personal turmoil. The novel follows Cassie Peters, who returns to her small hometown and takes up a job with Yosemite Search and Rescue, haunted by a past case that still weighs heavily on her.
McKenzie skillfully sets a tense and atmospheric tone, using the dramatic and isolated setting of Yosemite to heighten the suspense. The novel introduces a compelling cast of characters, including Petal, who maintains a detailed diary, and Jada, an Instagrammer on a road trip. Their interactions with Cassie build a complex narrative as secrets from Cassie’s past resurface.
However, while the setting and atmosphere are well-crafted, the story can feel predictable, with twists that are easily anticipated. The character development, while promising, occasionally falls short of depth, making it hard to fully connect with their individual journeys. Overall, “Have You Seen Her” is a solid read with an engaging setting and a suspenseful plot, but it may not offer the depth or surprises that some thriller enthusiasts seek.
This was a fast paced thriller that really surprised me. There were quite a few twists and turns that I did not see coming at all. I would think I figured out what was going on and then suddenly I would find out I was very wrong. No one can be trusted in this thriller!
Thanks to Netgalley and Atria Books eGalley for the E-ARC. This book was sooo good. The story was faced paced with always something happening I never got bored nor distracted everything was just flowing. I will admit I have a love/hate relationship when I dont know things before-hand and this book kept alot of things close to the vest BUT even when you thing okay its just low key suspense Catherine was like ah ah ah Im not done yet. Dont sleep on this book if you havent read it pick it up
I enjoyed how the story was told. Jumping from the past to the present on one character’s timeline with Instagram posts and journal entries from two other characters was great. It gave just enough information for the story to unravel, but kept me reading because I wanted to know how everything was connected.
Have You Seen Her is quite a psychological thriller by Catherine McKenzie. The past can often rear its sometimes ugly head to wreak havoc on one's present life. Lots of twists to the unpredictable plot leave the reader wondering just who the culprit is and will the mystery be solved, will the main character even survive? A complex and riveting tale of three women whose paths cross and whose secrets are revealed. I read a complimentary copy of the book through NetGalley and was not required to write a positive review. The opinions are my own.
3 stars!
I think unfortunately this book just really bored me. I felt myself nodding off at times because it just couldn't hold my attention, and although I don't mind the more mystery end of a mystery/thriller, this book was so monotonous and boring. Unfortunately not the book for me!
