Thank you to NetGalley, Atria Books and Catherine McKenzie for the ARC for an honest review.

This thriller sucked me in from the beginning. The setting was beautiful and made you feel like you are there. The descriptions of hiking and working in Yosemite were wonderful. I will be traveling to this area in a few weeks and was familiar with some of the lakes and towns mentioned in the book.

I liked the dual timelines from Cassie's before and now. It added to the suspense of what is happening in the now. Jada's Instagram posts and Pearl's journaling helped provide more information as to what was happening durint their time in Yosemite.

I did not see the twist coming and was surprised! I do feel like some of what happened after the twist was revealed fell into place a little too easy but I enjoyed the ending. I would love to see what kind of future Cassie and Ben have!

Favourite Quote: “In Memory of Those Who Are Lost, But Not Yet Found”

The main focus is on the three women with dark secrets, and are all running from something ,that will impact their lives. and cause collateral damage. when their lives intersect in the scenic and dangerous Yosemite National Park. The park has two deaths a decade apart from one another. In each instance Cassie was there, is she responsible? Is that why she abruptly leaves New York and her husband.. The chapters are labelled as now and then. The exact timeline is never revealed but it doesn’t take away from the story. It just was confusing at the beginning.
Cassie returns to the only place she thinks she’ll be safe. Close to where she grew up, to return to work as a search and rescue for YNP.

I related to Petal’s character on a personal level, I felt right there while she was writing her entries into her journal it revealed her most inner personal thoughts.
I journal daily myself, it’s cathartic and helps with my anxiety. The author brought Yosemite to life with her atmospheric writing, the park leapt from the pages. It is both scenic and dangerous. It’s not just the nature you have to worry about, but also the characters, that are secretive and dangerous themselves. The storyline was full of plot twist, fast paced, and the ending was a complete surprise that I did not see coming. It was a worthy OMG moment for me.. The book was quite the roller coaster ride, that had me guessing right up to the end..

It was my first book by Catherine McKenzie and I look forward to see what she writes next. Also checking out her backlist.

Cassie has escaped her past life in NYC to come home and work with Yosemite Search and Rescue again. She meets some characters on their own journeys whose lives cross paths.

This was an interesting story but it took a while for me to understand what was going on. I felt like a little was hinted at here and there but then it was all poured out at once towards the end. It was a surprise and I enjoyed how it all worked out but I would have liked a little more a little earlier.

“But what’s that expression? Man makes plans and God laughs. God is laughing.”

Have You Seen Her comes out 6/27.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Net Galley for providing a free ARC of this title in exchange for my review.

Overall, I didn't like this book. It wasn't my type of book - more twist and turn than mystery - and had more of a true crime feeling to it than I usually go for. The writing was ok, didn't really connect with the characters. And some of the tech details about social media were wrong, and that just felt so odd. WE're all too familiar with social media today to get those items wrong.

This wasn't the book for me. I'm sure others will enjoy it.

2 stars for 'it was ok'

First of all, I would like to thank NetGalley, Atria Books, and Catherine McKenzie for providing me with a copy of Have You Seen Her in exchange for an honest review.

Have You Seen Her is a story about our main character Cassie, who is desperately trying to run away from her past and ends up returning back to her hometown hoping for a fresh start. She ends up returning to her old job as a Yosemite search and rescue worker where she worked as a teenager, and where 10 years prior, she ended up becoming involved in the case of the disappearance of a young woman that still haunts her to this day. Now a whole decade later, Cassie finds herself involved in yet another strange disappearance of another young woman with strikingly eerie circumstances as the disappearance of the other woman 10 years ago in this crazy mystery/thriller story.

First off, this book had me intrigued right from the first chapter. The plot drew me in by the first chapter, with practically a cliffhanger after every chapter. I loved how atmospheric this book felt, almost like you were hiking and searching through the woods with the main characters, which made the story feel more real. I thought that using the mixed media platform (Instagram posts/articles/journal entries) and the dual timelines in the book really helped with the mystery plot with giving different perspectives on each character throughout the story, while also shining light on the themes of abuse and interpersonal conflicts that we see throughout with our main characters. The only con that I have with this book would be that I thought the dialogue and conversations between the characters felt a little childish and boring at the beginning and middle of the story, and it was hard to connect with some of the characters at times, but I really enjoyed some of the character dynamics between Cassie/Ben & Jada/Petal.

Overall, I loved the slow burn suspense leading up to the major reveal and shocking ending, and I loved how this book wasn’t just your typical mystery/thriller story, but also a story about three abused, but empowered, women connecting with each other over their dark secrets and finding a way to face them together. I would definitely recommend this book to other people and I would like to read more books from this author in the future!

4.5 ⭐️

"Have You Seen Her" is an exciting, adventurous page-turner set in the picturesque and perilous Yosemite National Park. This was such a thrilling and twisty novel, and I could not put it down.

Cassie has left her life—and her husband—in New York City to return to her hometown of Mammoth Lake, California. After ten years, she is rejoining the Search and Rescue team at Yosemite. Cassie becomes friendly with her fellow SAR workers and some of the young adventurers who have made Yosemite their home for the summer. At Yosemite, Cassie meets Petal, a young woman who recently moved to the area with her much older girlfriend, and Jada, who is on a cross-country road trip with her boyfriend. As the three women cross paths, dark secrets are revealed, and their pasts catch up with them.

From the very first page, I was completely hooked. This book was packed full of secrets and surprises I never saw coming. Having previously climbed a couple of Colorado 14-ers, I was obsessed with the setting at Yosemite and McKenzie's descriptions of the park. This story is told from two different timelines from Cassie's point of view: then, when she first arrives in Yosemite in May, and now. It also includes Petal's diary entries, Jada's Instagram posts, news articles, and YouTube transcripts. I loved this format and thought it was a unique way to really get into the heads of each of the three women. This was a slow burn until the end, when things really heated up and became fast-paced. The twist at the end was completely unexpected. I highly recommend this book!

Set in two timelines, this book is about 3 women who want to change the direction of their lives and end up in various roles in Yosemite National Park. There are lots of twists and turns in this book that keep the reader wondering what will happen next. Most of the characters are likable but there were a couple females I couldn’t connect with. The scenery descriptions are superb! Although this was a good book I don’t think it’s as good as some of Ms Mackenzie’s previous books. I received an arc of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.

Clever, fast-paced thriller from Catherine McKenzie that kept me guessing. When Cassie Peters returns to the Search and Rescue team in Yosemite National Park after ten years, she's looking to start her life over, but she can't escape her past. When an Instagram-famous couple goes missing in the park, it's reminiscent of a similar incident from ten years ago. But this time, the media attention is much more intense and social media coverage is more widespread, which makes it harder for Cassie to hide from what, and who, she is running from.

Things I liked:
--National Park setting
--Then and Now timeline
--The chapter titles
--Mixed media format-short chapters, diary entries, and Instagram posts
--Rock climbing lingo
--Fast read (I read it in one day)
--Very surprising twist at the end

I was lucky to read another advanced reader copy book (ARC) thanks to Net Gallery. “Have You Seen Her” is the new book from Catherine McKenzie.
The pub date for this book is June 27, 2023.
Get your pre-order copy now! It’s a RUSH of a thriller/mystery.

This winding tale follows the parallel, free-fall lives of three very different women who accidentally meet each other in the beauty of Yosemite National Park.

Cassie leaves her busy, glamorous life in NYC to return to her past, taking on the role as search and rescue support in Yosemite. One day, she saves Jada, who shares her adventures, of traveling in a airstream with her boyfriend, on Instagram. And both women meet Petal who logs her feelings about her life with an older wife in her diary. Their story unfolds told in very creative mediums.

The collision course of a black bear feeding, lost hikers both today and 10 years ago, and a bag full of money unveil long-held secrets that jeopardize the futures all of these women. The end is a shocker I never saw coming!

Although rock climbing, hiking, and tent camping are not my thing and I only sometimes gravitate to thrillers, this novel was worth the trek into the unknown. The descriptions of Yosemite transport you along for their adventure. I could even visualize myself hanging from that rock pitch. Catherine also has a unique way of sharing women’s story in any setting. Loved her last year’s novel-Please Join Us-so was thrilled to get my hands on an early copy of this new book.

4.5 stars ✨✨✨✨
Enjoy!

Have You Seen Her captivated me with the setting in Yosemite and the SAR team details. The story is told in 3 different POVs. Cassie is the main narrator and the story alternates between the past and the present. Petal and Sandy's story is told in the format of Petal's journal entries. Instagram posts with a blurb and comments tells the story of Jada and Jim who are doing a cross country trip. I really enjoyed the variation in ways the POVs were told. It broke things up and was creative. There wasn't overlap between the different POVs which can sometimes happen and becomes repetitive. Not the case here. The story was a little slow at first, but picked up about halfway through. It's definitely worth sticking with. I did not see the twists coming.
A great suspense and thriller story with an amazing setting and diverse characters.

Thank you for Net galley and Atria publishers for this e-galley in return for an honest review.

This mystery/thriller takes place in Yosemite national park and the author does a great job making our setting an important character in the novel. Cassie comes to the park to work in search and rescue for the summer to escape an abusive husband, being able to talk a former boss into giving her a spot on the team since they worked together 10 years ago. We quickly also get involved with two other women ,Petal and Jada, whose stories we get more info from by inserts of Jadas' instagram posts and Petals diary entries.

The time line alternates in Cassies story from then and now, but I found it relatively easy to follow all the threads, and I did not see the twist at the end coming. I found some of the story pretty unbelievable however, but if you are willing to just go with the flow I am sure you will enjoy this latest thriller from Catherine Mckenzie.

This book was really good!
It goes between two different timelines, a journal entry, and Instagram posts. The twists were great!
The ending was so good. A little expected but still so stinking good. Cassie, Jada, and Petal are quite the characters.

Cassie is coming back to her old life working for Yosemite's Search & Rescue. She left 10 years ago after a tragic discovery, and started a new, better life. Or so she thought. Now she is escaping that life and an abusive husband. At the same time, Jada and her boyfriend Jim are traveling across the country and make their way to Yosemite. And Sandy and Petal have also stopped to set up camp. Cassie, Jada and Petal all have secrets. Then one of them goes missing.

This is a book of secrets and unreliable narrators. It's hard to know who is telling the truth, or even half-truths. There are a lot of twists that increase the suspense... all the way until the end. I liked the setting; hiking in the wilderness can up the creepiness when people are being stalked.

I thought it was a great psychological thriller that keeps you reading as little bits about the women are revealed. The writing was good, although sometimes the breaks with Petal's diary, Jada's Instagram posts, and news articles could sometimes be distracting. Overall, a very good thriller!

Well, THAT took a turn. There were a couple different story lines occurring throughout the book and they all had my attention. They all led to the assumption that something was going to happen, it was just a matter of figuring out how it all linked up and came together. I constantly found myself in situations where I felt like I was so close to figuring it out but so far at the same time.
Jada and Jim were impossible for me to not link to Gabby Petitio and Brian Landry with a lot of similarities between the two couples. That alone set this book apart from the typical “thriller” books for me. Not in a bad way either. Just more of a true crime type feel to it. But still being immersed in the storyline, creating a different reading experience for me. I loved the concept of it taking place in Yosemite, definately set the tone for the book, feeling both picturesque and mysterious.

This book has me wanting to dive into Catherine McKenzie’s catalogue.

Have You Seen Her follows a woman on the run from her past set against the backdrop of Yosemite National Park.

Cassie is running from her old life in New York City, equipped with a burner phone and a new job at Yosemite National Park. After ten years, she’s rejoining the Search and Rescue team. She becomes friendly with a group of seasonal workers and summer vacationers. But Cassie is not the only one running from her past. And the past will eventually catch up with them.

This atmospheric thriller has two timelines. It includes a mix of Cassie’s pov along with journal entries, Instagram posts, and YouTube transcripts.

This thriller is nicely paced, with compelling characters set against the vivid landscape of Yosemite. I’ve never been to Yosemite, but the author made me feel like I was there.

I was invested in this story right from the beginning. But the ending slightly fell apart for me. The final reveal was a bit of a letdown.

But other than that, this would be a great book to add to your summer tbr.

3.5 rounded up.

Cassie Peters has left her life in New York to become a search and rescue worker at Yosemite National Park - a job that she had years ago and involved her working on a case that still haunts her to this day. She quickly falls into old patterns and meets Petal the journalist and Jada the Instagram guru. When these three women cross paths, Cassie’s past catches up with her and there is no turning back.

This book was fast paced, unpredictable, and full of unstable, secretive, and dangerous characters. It was gripping and full of hidden agendas and jaw-dropping twists that you won’t see coming. Yosemite National Park was also brought to life with the atmospheric writing and made for an enjoyable backdrop.

Thank you to NetGalley, Atria Books, and Catherine McKenzie for a #gifted ARC of this book in exchange for our honest reviews.

I really enjoyed this read. Set in Yosemite Park, I could really get all the feels of the surroundings. Cassie is running away from her life and back to what she knows and is good at but also a place that holds secrets and a tragedy. A lot of interesting characters and a good twist towards the end. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC

Catherine McKenzie’s books just get better and better! I began reading her books several years ago and she’s really come so far. I loved her earlier novels and I recommend you go back and read them, they were so good. But she’s fully embraced suspense and Have You Seen Her is the latest. This is the story of Cassie Peters who returns home from NYC to work on a case from many years ago.

Synopsis:

Equipped with a burner phone and a new job, Cassie Peters has left her hectic and secretive life in New York City for the refuge of her hometown of Mammoth Lakes, California. There, she begins working again with Yosemite Search and Rescue, where a case she worked on a decade ago continues to haunt her.

She quickly falls into old patterns, joining a group of fellow seasonal workers and young adventurers who have made Yosemite their home during the summer. There, she meets Petal, a young woman living in a trailer with her much older wife, keeping a detailed diary of the goings on of the park, and Jada, a recent college graduate on a cross-country road trip with her boyfriend, documenting their journey on Instagram.

This comes out on June 27.
