Cassie is running from something or someone. Meanwhile she takes a job at Yosemite looking for lost hikers are responding to medical emergencies. Eventually, these two collide as the someone she was running from comes looking for her. Another great thriller by Catherine McKenzie. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
My thanks to Atria books, Catherine McKenzie and Netgalley.
This was definitely my kind of story. I loved every minute of it!
I've developed a soft spot in my old age for books that make me feel at home. And the part of California where this book takes place is very much home territory-ish!
This was a fantastic story and whodunit!
Probably going to have to read more from Ms. McKenzie in the future!
I received an advanced copy of this book through NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I've read many of McKenzie's books, with You Can't Catch Me as one of my favorites. You may be as surprised as me to find her newest book surpassed the 4 star ratings for previous works. Maybe it's because the last few books I've read were somewhat unsatisfying, but from the beginning, I absolutely loved Have You Seen Her.
Cassie is leaving her old life in Manhattan as an art gallerina to be on a search and rescue team in Yosemite, near where she grew up. Her mom is still there, but they aren't close, and she's running from someone.
We meet the other members of the rescue team as the summer starts. Then, a couple who are visiting Yosemite for the summer and chronically Instagramming the events such as feeding a wild bear disappear. When Jada and Jim go missing, the SAR team starts searching for them, and Cassie stays behind in case they show up. Or maybe some other reason. Then another "missing" person reported, Petal. There's something in common with these missing hikers. All the while flash forwards to Cassie being rescued by her team with a dead body. So many questions and all the time the suspense built for me. When you get to around 73% or so, a somewhat huge revelation that I only partially guessed was made.
I don't want to give too much away but it was very enjoyable and well written. Trigger warning for domestic abuse.
Release date 6/27/23 4.8/5☆ rounded up.
I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley. This was my first Catherine McKenzie book but will not be my last. It had everything I look for in a thriller. Setting as a character: Yosemite National Park. Secrets. Twists. Suspense. It kept me guessing what will happen next!
Cassie has a successful husband and seemingly perfect life in New York, so why is she on the run and hiding in Yosemite National Park? Cassie had worked on the search and rescue team in the park 10 years ago and her familiarity with the area makes it the perfect place for her to get lost in now. However her anonymity is soon threatened when a couple goes missing while hiking and the media descends on the park. Danger is lurking everywhere from the physical dangers of the landscape to the mysterious disappearance of the hikers that bears a striking resemblance to a disappearance and death in the park a decade ago. Are the disappearances connected and are they connected to Cassie herself? The author does a good job of jumping back and forth between timelines and just when you think you know who to trust and who to fear, the secret lives of several characters make for a surprising last minute twist.

The writing style of this book was really well-done, and I feel that the characters were all given proper arcs and development . My qualms with this book is that readers are just...told things happen. Rather than experiencing events, it's just "this happened." This could be a lot better, could be a lot worse.
I really enjoyed this book! It's about a woman named Cassie who is trying to start over from her old life, running from a past. She starts working on a Search and Rescue team in Yosemite National Park, when things start to go awry. The setting was beautifully written and the suspense was wonderful. I would definitely recommend this book!
I thought the premise was good, but I felt there was a lot more telling than showing, not my favorite. I also didn't connect with any of the characters, which at the end made sense, but it almost felt like a lost cause then..
Cassie needs an escape, and there's no better place for that than the woods. It's to the woods she goes, then, to work in Search and Rescue. But Cassie has secrets—and so do the people around her.
I am *always* looking for hiking books. SAR books. Stuck-in-the-woods books. For reasons I cannot explain, I both want to spend all my time in the woods, not getting lost or being murdered by axemen, and also read a lot about people...uh...in the woods, sometimes getting lost or being murdered by axemen. Somehow these two desires have managed to coexist (peacefully, without axe-murder!) so far.
You can imagine, then, my pleasure at finding a mystery set almost entirely in a national park, with SAR work and hiking aplenty. (In another life, I want to be a backwoods ranger. In this life, I love reading about it, but there aren't all that many novels that fit the bill.) McKenzie has done her research here, and I love the details about hasty searches and the high proportion of callouts that don't amount to much. Cassie loves the work she's doing, but she's also aware that a lot of what goes wrong in national parks boils down to "people are really, really stupid sometimes".
"Have You Seen Her" moves quickly—I read the bulk of it on a three-hour flight, and the time (along with pages and plane, I guess) flew. I have mixed feelings about twists in general, and this book has a fairly significant one. On the one hand, I didn't see it coming (hurray); on the other hand, the mysteries that make me happiest are the ones in which things *are* as they seem, I'm afraid for the character throughout, and the narrator isn't hiding anything big from the reader. I'm afraid that any more I say will veer into spoiler territory, so I'll leave it at that, but this will be a better fit for those who want twisty and turny than for those who want something more straightforward. Still, a solidly satisfying read when I haven't been able to escape into the woods recently.
Thanks to the author and publisher for providing a review copy through NetGalley.
Women and their secrets....man, oh man.
Insanely fast-paced and with a reveal that will take your breath away, the less I say about this the better.
Thanks to NetGalley, Catherine McKenzie and the publishers for the opportunity to review this book.
First off, I want to thank NetGalley and Atria books for the chance to read and review this advanced review copy of 'Have You Seen Her'.
This novel had me on the edge of my seat from the very beginning. I didn't even want to come up for air. It is well-written, twisty, and dark.
Cassie Peters is running away from her life in New York. When she gets to Reno, on her way to Yosemite National Park, she throws her phone away and replaces it with a burner that she thinks can't be traced. She has landed a job at the Yosemite as a search and rescue employee, the same job she had ten years ago.
At the park there are the usual outdoors folks, along with Cassie's co-workers, and an assortment of summer people and campers. Of interest are Sandy and Petal, an unusual couple. Sandy is much older than Petal and appears to be quite controlling. She has an edge to her. Petal is documenting her time at the park in her journal which she writes in daily. Another couple, Chris and Jada, appear to be happy and in love as they document their travels on Instagram. However, there is a dark side to their relationship that is not always apparent.
Cassie is scared, all the time. She wonders if she is paranoid but realizes that she has a lot to be frightened about. I think we all know the saying, "Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean there isn't someone following you". As Cassie goes about connecting with others at the park, at the same time she does her life and death search and rescue work, she always has her eyes and ears open for anything out of ordinary.
Cassie has the usual search and rescue experiences: twisted ankles, exposure to the elements, lost hikers, and the lot. However, when a couple disappears in the park, it brings back memories of a traumatic event that Cassie endured ten years ago.
Things are not as they seem in this thriller. There is darkness and mystery lying await at many a corner. As Cassie tries to quell her anxiety and fear, she realizes that she has a lot to be concerned about. No matter what precautions she takes, no matter how many times she changes her name, she can still be found,
I enjoyed this book through and through with just a bit of disappointment with the ending. Although it is entirely unpredictable, I felt it difficult to suspend belief. Maybe that's just me. This is a book not to be missed by any thriller fan.
.
A fast-paced thriller set in the hauntingly beautiful grounds of Yosemite. I was obsessed with finding out what happened to Cassie from the very beginning, suspecting an abusive husband…? But never quite sure because Cassie wasn’t the most reliable character- misremembering things and imagining seeing people who weren’t really there. The present missing person(s) storyline is eerily similar to the past missing person(s), with dual timelines explaining the past case. I was invested the entire story. And the plot twist?! It was bonkers and SO good. I really, really enjoyed this book.
Thank you so much to Catherine McKenzie, @netgalley, & @atriabooks for this ARC in exchange for an honest review 🖤
Add this to the list of endings & twists I didn’t see coming. This was a really enjoyable read. If you’re into light thrillers that aren’t super dark I would definitely check this one out! I did feel like a needed a little more info from Cassie on why she was leaving her husband & why she had to go to these lengths to get away. He obviously seemed like a rich & powerful guy but I don’t feel like it was explained enough throughout & even at the end why running was the only answer.
Read this one if you’re into: remote-ish thrillers, suspense, twists & turns, disappearances, & the past colliding into the present.
Fast paced thriller set in the world of a search and rescue crew in Yosemite National Park. I like books which take me into a world I am unfamiliar with and I enjoyed hearing about how the crews live, prepare for rescues and searches and the difficulties they face when people are lost in the parks. Cassie is the main character and she has returned to search and rescue (called SAR) after taking a 10 year break. Cassie was born in nearby Mammoth Lakes and left after a friend died during a hike in the park. The story is told in then and now sections and includes not only Cassie's story but the journal entries of a young woman named Petal and some Instagram posts from a couple who traveled around the country and posted their journey.
Cassie was an intense character who found it hard to trust others and to let others in. After leaving an abusive marriage she is trying to hide out while living in the park and rejoining her original rescue partner. It seemed like not many people liked Cassie including her own mother and the author did a good job at describing her loneliness. The only person who seems friendly to her is Ben, a fellow worker and she begins to have romantic feelings for him. At the park, Cassie and the crew live in tents with the regular campers and she becomes friendly with Petal a young woman who wants to be a writer and lives with her older, controlling partner Sandy, and Jada a young woman whose story mirrors that of real life Gabby Petito.
When Jada and her boyfriend Jim go for a five day hike they fail to return and Cassie and her coworkers have to find them before it is too late. Cassie's life and past coming crashing in as she juggles searching for the missing couple, trying to figure out who is sending her vaguely threatening messages and she thinks she has seen her ex husband lurking around..
There was a big twist I didn't see coming in the end and all of the pieces of the story came together in a clever way. I enjoyed this book and would love to read another book set in the world of search and rescue. Thank you to Atria books and NetGalley for a ARC of this book in exchange for a honest review.
I loved this book. I can always expect a good twist or two from this author and that's exactly what I got!!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Atrai books for my ARC!
This book was very different from the previous McKenzie book Ii read, in the best way. I really enjoyed this! I found the mystery engaging, the characters well-drawn, and the setting was pitch-perfect. This book centers around Cassie, who has fled her marriage and life in New York to return to her old gig at Search and Rescue (SAR) at Yosemite. This return to her old life brings up many unpleasant memories for Cassie, and what's worse, they seem to be repeating in real time. The premise was so different from McKenzie's previous book, and I loved Yosemite as the setting for this slow-burn, character-driven mystery. Obviously there was some suspension of disbelief, but this book was so engaging it wasn't a problem for me. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a mystery with dual timelines and a very unique setup!
Catherine McKenzie's name popped up with must-read 2023 releases and while I was looking at Goodreads Reading Challenges and Award Winners. Have You Seen Her is the author's latest book, and I was lucky enough to grab a copy on NetGalley. Told in the present and slight past, we meet 3 women who are on a journey to Yellowstone. They have no connections from what we can tell, but somehow they all meet up, intertwining their lives to save a bear from being euthanized. One saves the other's life when she nearly falls on a climb. The third is writing a simple story about how they all met. As the pages unfold, we learn what they are all running from, and it seems minor until it isn't. Slow-burner, somewhat unreliable narrator (not told in first person) but the chapters leave essential facts and scenes out. Readers don't find out until too late what's really happening, and by then, it did feel like a let-down because too much was hidden. At the same time, time plays a critical role so finding out facts at the proper time is important, and maybe things are necessary and intentional here. Good writing. Interesting characters. At first I wasn't into the story but it grows on you. Will definitely try another book from the author.
Smart and fast-paced, I think this is going to be hard to beat.
The backdrop of Yosemite gives this story a little extra oomph.
It’s filled with secrets, hidden agendas, and some pretty great twists.
This author is usually a big hit for me, however this book didn't hit the mark for me. With this being about rescues at the National Park, I wanted to experience what these were like and not told about them after the fact like this book did. I get that something was going on with Cassie, however there never was clarity about what finally made her leave. It was assumed that there was some kind of breaking event. I thought Petal was completely predictable and just nothing new. It was obvious that there was involvement there. The ending made this book a little more interesting, however at that point it was a bit late for redemption for me. Thanks for the ARC, NetGalley.
Whilst I really enjoyed the book at first, it started to drag and I lost interest as it kept going. I have never DNF’d a book before and will finish anything that I start, and the twists on this made it worth finishing, however I had figured them out pretty early on
