Okay here's the thing, I really enjoyed this one. It had all the suspense, mystery and twists that I love in a book. Then I got to a certain point that was eerily similar to a very big case that was not too long ago to not take a little offense that someone took that story to their advantage. A few tweaks and it would change that perception for me. However, after picking up on that, it did change and ended up being not so similar but it still bothers me that to a point, it was. I am not a sensitive one when it comes to books in any way but this was just a little too soon. That said, this was still an overall good, solid read. Three and a half stars.
Thank you Netgalley and Atria Books for this ARC.
Have You Seen Her is the second novel by Catherine Mackenzie and I enjoyed it more than the previous one by her. This book is on the short side but it is not short of excitement, thrill and mystery.
Cassie Peters has left her past life behind and moved out to Yosemite to start a new life again as a Search And Rescue worker for the summer - a job she once had during her teenage years. She makes this big jump to run away from her abusive husband and in her heart she knows it was right. Throughout the summer she experiences some daring rescues but then several people begin going missing and it is very reminiscent of her past time working there.
During her time working at Yosemite, Cassie makes friends with a young woman named Petal who is living with her wife and seem to be on different pages and paths. Cassie also meets another young woman named Jada and her boyfriend who love instagramming their vacation- the good, the bad and the ugly.
This book is heart pounding and thrilling with plenty of twists and turns. Mackenzie does a phenomenal job at building suspense and creating an ending that is unexpected. I found this book to be a page turner and one that was a quick and easy read that held my interest and attention. I liked the National Park setting and liked the small group vibe she built. Overall I liked this book and it was a solid 3.5 stars from me. Thank you Netgalley, Atria books and Catherine Mackenzie for this advanced copy. This book comes out June 27th and you definitely need to put it on your list- especially if you have any camping trips planned!
The writing and characters were great. You really get inside of Cassie’s head and how she is feeling/what she is thinking. The back and forth in time POV was a little confusing, for me personally, at first. I enjoyed most of the story until about 93% of the way through. I felt that the ending dragged on for longer than it should have. The twist in the middle was fantastic, and I never saw it coming. I still enjoyed this book, even if the ending dragged!
This book took too long to get into. It was slow and confusing with too many characters and story lines. By the time it got to the twist I wasn’t as interested.
Cassie Peters has escaped from her abusive husband and her life in New York without leaving a trace. She has secured a job working for search and rescue in Yosemite National Park. Years ago she did the same job, but left after an attempted rescue gone bad.
Seemingly everyone in this novel has secrets and hidden agendas. Cassie is haunted by her past at the park, and constantly worried that her abusive husband will track her down. The tension increases further when several campers go missing.
I really enjoyed this one. It was a “can’t stop reading “ book that I read in a day. The tension continued to build, and I didn’t see the twist coming. A perfect summer beach read.
My rating is: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Pub Date is June 27th 2023.
Thanks to Atria Books and Netgalley for providing me with this eARC to read and review.
Thank you Netgalley and Atria Books for letting me read this book!
This mystery/thriller follows three groups of people. You have the main character/POV, Cassie who is running away from something in her present life and returning to her past as a SAR (Search and Rescue) for Yosemite Park. Jim and Jada are a couple venturing around Yosemite, experiencing the wilderness as much as possible. Lastly, Sandy and her young girlfriend Petal live in Yosemite. All three groups of people have dark secrets that eventually intersect.
The story is intriguing, yet a little slow at the beginning to build up the storyline. It was a little hard to follow at first because of the three different storylines but it improved better once I figured out who the main characters were. I enjoyed how the main character's POV (Cassie) was the main story, then Jim & Jada's actions were either told by what Cassie witnessed or posts that Jada was leaving on social media, and Petal's POV was told by her journal writings. I love when books have multimedia, I find it fun, easy, and fast to read. The ending of the book was the best part and told very well, answering all questions that were hanging opening throughout the story.
Overall I give this story 3.5 stars, but I'm rounding up for GoodReads & Netgalley.
The story starts slow and I found it a little confusing. This one wasn’t for me but I was intrigued enough to persevere to the end. The plot twists are significant. I was invested enough that I had to find out how everything fit into the story.
2.5/5 rounded up to 3/5
Thank You to NetGalley, Atria Books and Catherine McKenzie for the opportunity to read this ARC.
This book was very hard for me to get through. I enjoyed the back and forth between then and now. But the wilderness aspect of it and the 3 different storylines kind of threw me. I willl try the author again because I did like the writing style
This book had an intriguing premise but then little to no action for the vast majority. The first 50% of the book just dragged on and by the time there was decent plot movement, I had already lost interest in all the characters. I finished it to see how it ended but not sure I would read anything else by this author.
The book started slowly for me, there was a lot more to the story than the description indicated, giving a lot of information about her life in the past with a few glimpses of the present. The two different timelines were confusing to me and seemed like there was a lot of filler until more towards the end of the book. were more action took place and then ended, the ending was a surprise for me. I usually enjoy dual timeline books, but for some reason I couldn’t keep them straight until I was well into the book and even then I would have to check back to see if it was then or now and not sure how long ago then was. It took a little to understand the time frame and keeping the characters straight and what their involvement is but in all it was a good read.
Thank you NetGalley and Atria Books for the copy of Have You Seen Her by Catherine McKenzie
Have You Seen Her by Catherine McKenzie was an entertaining read that was extremely enjoyable and hard for me to put down!
It's surprising, gripping, suspenseful, and filled with so many unexpected twists and turns that will keep you guessing right until that cleverly written surprise ending!
The way that the details were revealed to us was extremely well-done and the setting was very atmospheric which I totally loved.
"I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."
Thank You NetGalley and Atria Books for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
I am writing an honest review in exchange for a free ARC from netgalley.
I was so excited when I found I was approved to read this ARC. This author is one I've had my eyes on (and own 2 free Kindle copies of) that I hadn't tried yet. I'm honestly embarrassed that I waited this long y'all.
Cassie Adams escapes her abusive husband and returns to Yosemite as a search and rescue employee. What could possibly go wrong? Well, she is getting anonymous texts that aren't exactly friendly, her mother who she's never has a good relationship with continues to pester her, and her former friends and co-workers are happy she's back but also view her as a constant reminder of a tragedy they faced ten years ago.
This book is best read in a 3 day-1 week period. I was super busy with work so it made the story feel a little choppy but I tried so hard to read it wherever I could, including the nail salon. I kept staying up late for one more chapter trying to figure out the plot twists. I must admit I was fooled and did not see the connection between plot points until the end. If you consider yourself a thrill seeker or murder mystery sleuth, then this is the book for you. Also, I can't wait to read more from this author (goes to Kindle downloads...)
Have You Seen Her was a thriller set in a wooded area that involves 3 women and a lot of secrets. I enjoyed this book and was surprised by the twist that happened. 3/5 stars.
Catherine McKenzie’s newest novel had me hooked from the beginning. Cassie, the main character, spent her adulthood running from the past she desperately wanted to leave behind, only to run right back to it in order to escape the life she had worked so hard to build. The book seemed fairly straight forward until about the 80% mark, and then it took a turn that I definitely didn’t expect. I liked how the plot twisted and turned at the end, but I wasn’t a fan of the actual ending if that makes any sense. Overall, it was a solid read and I look forward to exploring more works by this author.
Yowza, Catherine McKenzie has done it again!
I’d like to thank @netgalley and @atriabooks for this advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
First, let me say this seemingly new trend of “outdoor thrillers” involving hiking and the back woods has me totally stoked. It’s officially my favorite sub-genre of thrillers, and I love that some of my favorite authors are in on the trend.
This book follows Cassie (of many aliases) as she escapes to Yosemite National Park to get away from an abusive husband in NYC. Cassie has found a job as a search and rescue worker, something she did at this same park many years ago before a tragedy struck close to home and sent her packing her bags and starting a new life. This time, she’s back for a fresh start and to hide away where her husband will never find her.
…or has he?
This compelling thriller has a little bit of everything - shady characters, the great outdoors, romance, found family, and risk-taking. The story is told in “before” and “now” segments, and peppered between mixed media storytelling like journal entries, annotated YouTube videos, and social media posts.
We get to know several other characters, including Ben (fellow SAR worker), Jenny (who was with Cassie when the last tragedy struck at Yosemite), the social media influenced Jada and her boyfriend Jim, and your, naive Pearl and her girlfriend Sandy.
This was a wild ride and didn’t go where I anticipated it would. There’s a good twist here that had me re-reading chapters frantically to figure out what I missed.
If you like thrillers, outdoorsy mysteries, or just adore Catherine McKenzie like I do, you need to preorder this or grab it when it drops June 27! The perfect summer thriller.
HAVE YOU SEEN HER, the latest thrill ride from Catherine McKenzie was a VERY slow build in my opinion. I kept thinking, ‘When is something good going to happen?’ Then, everything started to fit together and I realized that something GOOD was happening all along. It just seemed to take a very long time to get there. The last fourth of the book put everything together and left me shaking my head in wonder.
When Cassie returns to Yosemite to participate in the Search and Rescue program 10 years after leaving, she discovers that some things can come back to bite you. Running from an abusive husband, she loses herself in the work and enjoys the freedom of all the open spaces after feeling like she was so locked into her marriage with Kevin. Ten years ago, Cassie and another searcher, Jenny found the body of her friend and classmate whose boyfriend had trekked out to get help after she was injured. Cassie and Jenny didn’t find her in time and Cassie left home to build a new life.
Now, ten years on, Jenny is a supervisor and hires Cassie when she decides to go home. She comes to know some of the hikers/campers staying on site and when another couple goes missing, it’s seems as if Cassie is dropped back into the past.
I must admit that I was considering if I really wanted to even complete the book. It just felt like it was going nowhere. But I told myself to stick it out, and I’m so glad that I did for I had whiplash with all of the twists, turns and revelations at the end which redeemed the slow start for me. Soo many secrets and lies! Think I’ll go for a walk!
I was shocked at how much I enjoyed this book. I went in thinking it was just going to be a typical missing persons book. Wow, it’s so much more! This book kept me guessing to the end. I also did not notice any grammatical errors( a huge plus)!
I couldn't put this one down! Catherine Mckenzie tells a suspenseful tale with lots of unexpected twists. Set in the beautiful, scenic Yosemite Park, Mckenzie explores the themes of regret and revenge and just how far someone will go to escape an abusive relationship. The story is artfully told through online platforms, personal diaries and narrative which made it relatable and realistic. This was such a satisfying read, and I hope to see more from these characters in the future.
This book centers around Cassie, a women who flees New York City to escape her husband. She flees to Yosemite National Park to work as a search and rescue (SAR) team member, something she did after graduating high school ten years ago. During her stint as a SAR team member the first time, she dealt with searching for a young woman she knew growing up. Now she is searching again in Yosemite for a lost couple. We get to see how grueling the search and rescue process is, not just the physical toll but the emotional toll it takes on the SAR team. The book is told switching between different time periods, going between events months ago, the present time, and ten years ago. We know there are a lot of hidden secrets and I don’t want to divulge them here. Relationships are brought into question, past history catches up sometimes, there’s a lot going on. The book moves along at a fairly good pace and was quite suspenseful. I was surprised by the ending. Overall, I enjoyed this book - personally, I would have liked a few things done differently in the end, but I would still recommend this book. The characters were interesting but not always likable. I would give this book 4 stars out of 5.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this digital ARC in exchange for an honest review. This book is due to be released in June, 2023.
This is another great thriller from Catherine McKenzie! I dove right in and could not put it down. I was guessing throughout and really enjoyed this one! If you love suspense/mysteries like I do, I think this will be a favorite.
