I was worried I wouldn’t like this book because I’m not a fan of football or football culture. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. The descriptions of individual games were my least favorite part, though expected for this memoir. The descriptions of how Russell navigated his identities as a young, black, bisexual male, the different cultures in which he lived and how they influenced him, and his individual struggles and overcoming them were all fascinating. There was a good, strong narrative voice and comfortable, easy-to-follow writing style. I feel many will see representation they identify with, and need, in this book.
