I really liked the premise, performing a spell to erase someone from your life.
Gemma is dumped by her boyfriend, and after a few margaritas, decides to perform a cleansing spell to erase him from her memory. Her aunt, sister, and best friend Dax are there and Dax kisses her to seal the spell.
The next day, it’s clear the spell worked. She’s not heartbroken over her ex, but she finds her entire life is different. The worst thing is that Dax doesn’t know her anymore, because she met him the same night she met her ex. They were best friends but now Gemma realizes that he was much more than that.
Can Gemma somehow get back to Dax or will she have to attempt to reverse the spell? Is it even possible? I enjoyed reading the “what if” plot and seeing how far reaching one decision could be. 4.5 stars.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed as in this review are completely my own.
I have truly never read a book like this one, for being a debut it was amazing. This was such a quick, unique, and fun book to read.
Gemma gets dumped by her boyfriend of 4 years, and is in a very low point in her life. Her aunt decides to intervene just a tad by having her do a love cleanse that puts her into a parallel universe where she never met her ex boyfriend. But that also means she had never met her best friend Dax either. She spends the next month falling for him and him falling for her.
There are bumps along the way and she has to decide if she wants to stay in this new universe where she is with Dax or go back to her old one where Dax is still only her best friend.
Watching them grow together in this new universe was amazing. I was rooting for them the whole time. I could not put the book down it was so good. Perfect fall time read!!
“Sometimes the best risks are the ones you make with your heart.”
When Gemma gets dumped by her boyfriend, she reacts the way any reasonable twenty-eight-year-old would: she gets drunk with her friends and casts a love-cleansing spell to erase said boyfriend from her memory. But when she wakes up and realizes the spell worked, she also realizes that her life is now unrecognizable to her. And Dax, her bff, now has no idea who she is. Can she get this now stranger to kiss her and reverse the spell without falling for him herself?
This was such a cute rom com with lots of spice, spells, and alternating realities. Gemma is a fun and feisty character and I enjoyed her development and self improvement over the course of the story.
The audiobook was so fun! The narrator nailed Gemma’s angst and stress and really captured her essence. A great listen!
Thanks for the free audiobook @PRHAudio #PRHAudioPartner and to @netgalley, @randomhouse, and the author for the ARC.
I truly loved this book so charming and cozy. I need this as a physical book asap. Thank you net galley for letting me read this 5 star read.
I enjoyed every part of this book. it was fun, the characters were lovable, the plot was well paced, and the romance was sweet. It was one of the reads during the holiday season that I looked forward to picking up and getting to the end. I loved the magic aspect of the book, and how it intertwined so flawlessly with the contemporary world. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a feel good, funny romance.
This was only my second foray into Witch Romance, but different in that here, Gemma doesn't believe the magic will work, so that added a special je ne sais quoi to the story. It especially fit with my recent ao3 reads that were heavy on amnesia and alternate realities. Don't you love when a book fits the mood?
For me, what really shined brighter than the romance were the female relationships, especially between Gemma and her sister. She's the one who really helps Gemma open her eyes and her heart.
Overall, I'd give it 4/5 stars. Perfect for fans of 90s Sandra Bullock movies ala Practical Magic.
Gemma is freshly out of a relationship wishing she had never met Stewart. Dax is her best friend that she met the same night four years earlier. In an at-home spell circle, they, along with Gemma's sister and slightly kooky aunt wish that she'd never met Stewart. But be careful what you wish for.
What ensued was a parallel universe with a clear butterfly effect. The better her life in this new timeline got, the worse off the lives of those around her got. A month later, Gemma must decide which timeline she wants to live in: the one where she has it all or the one where she and Dax are merely best friends?
This Spells Love was exactly the light read I needed. It was cute, made me smile, and has really good themes throughout. It's pretty much what you would expect of it, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone needing a light romance. I look forward to the next!
And thank you to Random House publishing for the free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are 100% my own.
Thank you to NetGalley, Kate Robb & Random House for the opportunity to read the ARC for "This Spells Love". This is my honest and unpaid review of the book.
I really loved reading this book! It had a fun twist and some great insight into the "what if" factor that dominates a lot of people's decisions, and reflections. I didn't realize until I was part way into the story that this book is set in Hamilton, ON, Canada, just a short distance from where I was born myself! This made me so happy. Books are always set in New York, London, etc even when the authors aren't from there. Just goes to show that romance can blossom anywhere! The character's in the story were very relatable and I loved the story, the twists and the relationships between them all. I sure hope this author plans to write more books, and set them in Canada!
I have to admit that I took some time to start this one because I was magic-ed out from all my witchy fall books. Although this book was predictable it is the perfect book to read after any heavy books.
After a bad breakup Gemma performs a love cleansing spell with her kooky aunt but it ends up cleansing her best friend Dax’s relationship with her from the timeline as well. Gemma embarks on a quest to reverse the spell — which requires a kiss from Dax — and finds that she may be in love with the man she thought was only a friend.
I loved this book not only for the romance, but also for the self discovery that Gemma goes through as she lives through a different timeline.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher! 3.5 stars.
What a fun read!! Ever wonder how your life would be different with one changed decision? After Gemma breaks up with her boyfriend Stuart - she wishes she had never dated him. When she makes that wish while casting a spell from a book in her aunt’s shop, she doesn’t actually expect anything to happen. But she wakes up the next day in a slightly different world. If you enjoyed the movie Sliding Doors, this is a must read for you!! Thank you to the publisher, Netgalley and PRH Audio for the free ebook and audiobook to review.
I really enjoyed this multiple reality story of Gemma and Dax. In the first reality Gemma is going through a breakup and stuck in a reliable job she hates - her best friend is Dax. One drunken night, along with her aunt and sister, she does a spell from an old book that she seals with a kiss from Dax - she wakes up in a damp basement. She was granted a new reality - one where she is thriving but she comes to find out Dax is struggling. Despite this the two fall in love and she is left with deciding whether to stay or to go home.
I found this read quick and cute and I definitely fell for Gemma and Dax.
This book was so cute!! I'm not always sure about books with supernatural elements, but this story sucked my right in. Gemma was adorable and I was rooting for Dex!! Great read!
Okay this was definitely a cute read. I liked how the alternate timelines worked out. It wasn’t as confusing as other novels I’ve read this year with that kind of premise and I appreciate that.
Loved the trio of Gemma, her sister and her Aunt. I totally want to hang out with those three!
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Reminded me of 50 first dates. It was alright. I think I just wasn't in the right mood when I read this. I'll probably try to read it again and I can see myself liking it more. Right now it would be a 3.5 so I'll round to 4.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House for the ARC!
A fun book about the choices we make in life, and the people we decide to share our heart with along the way.
Our MC, Gemma, breaks up with her long-term boyfriend, doubts her entire life, and with the help of her family, a little (a lot) of alcohol, and a weird book that ended up at her Aunt's shop, she enacts a curse to erase her ex from her life.
Gems wakes up the next morning with her whole life changed. Her best friend Dax (who kissed her the night before) doesn't know her. She has her own shop instead of working for a company. This was a whole world where she didn't get with her ex... and all the cascade of changes that didn't happen to her in the world she knew.
Does Gemma stay in a world where she's a stranger to her best friend, where he's a different person than she's always known? To leave, she's gotta do the curse again and wish it all away, but she needs Dax to kiss her again. But oh, this feels different to the Dax she knew. This one is a *spark*. Does she really want to go back to her old life now that she knows what life with Dax could be?
I loved this one, personally. Fun, fluffy, and just a little spicy. I tend to read romances in-between more serious thriller and horror books, and this was perfect for what I needed. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this author in the future.
I received a copy from NetGalley for review.
Unfortunately this for me is a DNF (DNFing at 60%, so I feel mostly qualified to talk about it). I think for me not finishing is for the best because every time I look at my Kindle to start reading it I make the same face Miranda Priestly makes in the Devil Wears Prada when she's unhappy. It's the combo, friends to lovers, mediocre time hop where the love interest doesn't know what the main characters do that just doesn't hit for me. Gemma and Dax while probably a great couple for other people, just feels nefarious in this alternate timeline and it's just not enough for me to want to finish the book.
Started a little slow for me but I fell in love with both characters and both timelines. Hard choices and alternate realities will warm your heart.
Really 4.5 stars
A fun, cute rom com to read.
The chemistry between main characters, Dax and Gemma, was fun to see evolve over time.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
THIS SPELLS LOVE was exactly the cute, paranormal, witty romcom I needed to cement in my heart that witchy romances are, indeed for me. The classic spell-gone-wrong trope worked quite well, and I was swooning from the very beginning of the relationship.
Kate Robb was not on my radar before, but now she definitely is!
This book was OK. I got through it well enough, but really struggled to keep my attention. All in all, I'm not sure if I'd recommend it as I didn't really feel like it had anything new to offer.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with an ARC through NetGalley. As always, my opinions are entirely my own.
