A cute romcom for anyone needing the equivalent of a bubble bath for your brain. The overall plot was predictable by the end of chapter three, but it was a fun lighthearted journey to get there. The characters were sweet and easily loveable. The only issue I had with this book is at one point a character asserts opposite genders can never be platonic friends. Other than that I recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick afternoon read.

My thanks for the ARC goes to NetGalley and Random House, Dial Press Trade Paperback. I'm voluntarily leaving a review.

Genre: Romance, Magical Realism, Contemporary Romance
Spice Level: High (as in over 10% of the book)
Language: High (plenty—over the top number of f-bombs)

The good stuff:

- I liked the relationship of the sisters and aunt.
- Friends to lover trope is one of my favorites.
- Learned something more about curling.
- Love Canada!

The not so good stuff:

- The language turned me off of this book. I just don't like so much crude language as a personal preference. So, I ignored it and sped read.
- This book hits a spicy section and stalls there for a LONG time. Very graphic content. (I totally skipped most of it, just diving in enough to see if they actually talked or had anything important happen.) Graphic sexual content is also not my thing because I want to feel like the story is progressing.

So, this one wasn't for me. Because the premise is fun, I'm still giving it a decent review because if the factors I didn't like are your thing, you're going to love it.

This Spells Love is a charming magical romance. I think at some point in our lives we wished we never met someone. Well, Gemma’s wish comes true! But is the grass really greener? I’d recommend This Spells Love to someone who enjoys friends to lovers and magical elements in their books.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Who hasn't ever wondered what their life would be like without making a specific decision??

This was a good book, especially for a debut author. I adored Gemma and freaking LOVED Dax. I did find myself looking forward to reading it when I was doing other things. But the story was just missing *something* for me to rate it higher, but I don't know what exactly that is.

I don't know whether it was too insta-lovey for me (after Gemma was in Kicks, of course) or if there wasn't enough drama/troubles that Gemma and Dax had to face. Gemma's reveal to Aunt Livi and Kiersten that she's from a parallel universe fell flat. Who just accepts that someone is from a parallel universe without questions? I thought Aunt Livi's cognizance of what was going on (her comments in the apartment, the coffee on the train) was going somewhere, but it was left hanging.

I don't know. It was just missing something to take it to the next level. But I did really enjoy it.

Thank you to NetGalley & Random House for providing an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

Thanks so much for this Arc! What a wonderful debut from Kate Robb 👏 The story line was different but so so good. The love story between Gemma and Dax was so good I devoured this book in a day! It made me laugh and it made me swoon 🫠, what more do you really need from a Rom Com? You need to add this to your TBR like yesterday! I can't wait to see what else this author has up her sleeve ☺️

“What if I never met them?”

I'm sure you’ve asked yourself that question. I know I have many times. This book allows a glimpse of the parallel universe of that very question. After a drunken night trying to get over her ex, Gemma casts a spell, along with the help of her family and best friend Dax, to erase her ex from her life, not knowing the whirlwind it would create in her life. I could tell from the opening line that I would be fully absorbed and love this book! This is a perfect mix of cozy, funny, and heart-eye-gushing moments. Her family had me laughing out loud, and Dax gave golden retriever energy that I wanted to bottle up and keep for myself. Towards the end, I was becoming nervous about how everything would end for everyone. This was well worth the read if you're looking for a cute rom-com.

I. Loved. This. Book. I knew pretty quickly that this was going to be a 4 or 5 star read for me.

Think Peggy Sue Got Married meets Book Lovers (but without the books).

Gemma is thrust into an alternate reality when she - with the help of her aunt, sister, and BFF Dax - "cast" a spell to help her forget her ex. But in this alternate reality, Gemma's life is different - from her job to Dax being clueless as to who she is.

Gemma has to figure out how to get back to her actual life, and she knows Dax is the key.

As readers, we experience Gemma and Dax fall in love. It is organic and pure. I loved it. But while we are reading as these two characters fall in love, we are also trying to figure out what will be the "trigger" to send Gemma back to her life - and what will happen with Dax there.

There are 3 spicy scenes that are pretty descriptive. I did not find them cheesy and over-the-top; it was just essentially the natural progression when two people are "discovering" each other.

This book is going to appeal to those who enjoy a rom-com with just a slice of spice.

I really enjoyed this, I just love a girl who has no idea her best friend is in love with her. Seeing her fall in love with him in the other universe was a lot of fun. My only thing is that I wish we got to see more of them together in their universe.

I received an arc through netgalley.

This was a really fun read! It took me a little while to get into it, but I think that's because I'm not always a fan of timeline play. But I am a fan of ~magic~ and romance, so I'm glad I gave this book a try! It was a cute story that was different from my normal rom-com and romantasy reads. The characters are endearing and easy to root for and I would definitely recommend this cozy romance to a friend!

This Spell Love is a cute romance between friends, Gemma and Dax. Honestly I was expecting to be more witchy magical story, it wasn't, but I still enjoyed it a lot, it was cozy and the romance was so cute. Love the idea of time travel, and how small actions create different paths and can change everything.

Gemma and Dax are best friends, they met the same day that she met her now ex-boyfriend, to forget him her aunt prepares a spell, but it goes wrong, and instead of never meeting the ex, she wakes up in another alternative reality where she is not friends with Dax either.

Gemma and Dax are so cute together, fun and witty too. They are independent and talented, own their own small business, his are personalized footwear and hers a skin care shop.

The romance is the principal plot, but I love that there is also a family focus, I enjoy the scenes between Gemma and her older sister Kiersten, and the cool Aunt Livi; their bond is evident. Also, the portrayal of small businesses, from having an idea to opening and operating your own business. It’s lighthearted but at the same time kind of realistic.

This was fun, Gemma and Dax are loveable, the romance is slow burn but spicy, it’s a charming debut, with a sweet but fun romance, cool family, yummy food (and margaritas) and a Canadian setting.

Read it if you want:
• Time Travel (in 13 Going On 30 style)
• Cute but spicy romance
• Friends to lovers

This blew me away. I loved SO much about it. Like basically everything. This book moved so fast I just couldn’t help but to completely devour it. I loved the balance of sci fi parallel timeline exploration with romance and also some personal growth thrown in there with some side characters.

The friends to lovers. This is a favorite trope of mine and this one I felt handled it accurately. Gemma gets a chance to explore a possible romantic connection with her best friend of 4 years but it’s realistic in that in the alternate timeline it isn’t just easy going. Gemma is still recent post break up with someone else in the original timeline and it’s confusing and daunting and I just loved that personal exploration and doubt. I loved that Gemma and Dax got a chance to have these cute strangers to lovers moments. It’s almost like you get two different romances in one but it’s written so well that they really tie in together. Gemma gets to explore what’s the same in the new timeline and discover what’s different and it’s genuinely so fun. As a reader we get to see a new relationship develop while internally Gemma shares with us their original development in a really organic way. Fate is on Gemma and Dax’s side in the new timeline and it’s just full of butterfly moments as they connect. Again with the fast pacing, it lends such a benefit to the romance and general storyline.

There’s also hilarious side characters that feel very vivid but also an important one in particular in Gemma’s sister Keirstin. Sparing spoilers I just really liked that added bonus and side story.

This is open door and a wonderful amount of spice. Yay!

This was everything I look for in a romance and I’m so grateful to Dial Press/Random House for this ARC! I’m looking forward to upcoming books from this author. This had me feeling all the feels.

"This Spells Love" by Kate Robb is a romantic and comedic novel that tells the story of Gemma Wilde, a young woman who tries to heal her heartbreak by casting a spell to erase her ex from her past, but wakes up in an alternate reality where she's lost more than she bargained for. The book is full of love, humor, banter, chemistry, spice, and angst. Its plot is unique, warm, and a cozy read, with a touch of magical realism. I would have liked to see a bit more character development, though overall it was whimsical, witty, and an overall fun read. I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of magical romance, or just someone looking for a cozy and fun read.

OH MY GOSH!! I loved this debut romance from new Canadian author SO DARN MUCH!! Set in Hamilton, Canada there were just sooo many great local references that only Canadians will get. Well Done!!

But aside from that, it was also just the most perfect friends to lovers, second chance romance with a time loop twist (always my fav story element). Gemma has been best friends with Dax for four years and when she gets dumped by her long term boyfriend she gets drunk and does a silly spell with her aunt to erase all memories of her ex, sealing the spell with a kiss from Dax.

When Gemma wakes up the next day she realizes the spell has worked but also that Dax has no memory of her either and in this new life she found the courage to start her own business - taking a chance she hadn't been brave enough to do before. Trying to make Dax remember her has Gemma realizing just how great he is and considering what if they were something more.

This was the perfect balance of he secretly falls first (I love a great pining cinnamon roll hero) and learning to take chances in both life and love story. Steamy and sweet and just plain unputdownable. It was also great on audio read by new to me narrator, Khaya Fraites. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital and audio copy in exchange for my honest review!! I cannot wait to read what Kate Robb writes next!!

When I say I was addicted to this book, my god. I read it in a day. I couldn’t stop reading. I found myself trying to read every time I had a second to. I absolutely adored Gemma. So much. Same with Dax. Honestly? Every character in this whole dang book. The amount of times my heart was broken or I was so happy that it made me cry, too high. Just such a good and fun book. This is exactly the kind of book that I want when I saw I want a happy feel good book.

A bit spicy in parts but nothing too crazy. Maybe 3/5 on spicy level.

Seriously though, run to get this book. I can’t get over how much I loved it and can’t wait for this author to have another book.

Thank you to NetGalley and Random House for publishing the ARC.

This book was an adorable rom-com with just a little sprinkle of magic and an aunt that seems to know everything that happens before it does. It features Gemma, a 20-something fresh off a breakup and living a life devoid of any real accomplishment. And Dax, her wildly successful best friend who you can tell from the beginning has been in love with her for four years. She makes a wish to have never met the jerk boyfriend and comes to find that this glimpse into the future she might have had is not all sunshine and roses either.

This book hit me hard with the 13 Going on 30 vibes, and I loved seeing Gemma grow from an anxious mess into a competent human. I loved seeing how she and Dax met in this new universe and how much she let her ex guide the anxious behavior she exhibited. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the building of Dax and Gemma's relationship. My only complaint is that there were parts where their relationship felt very rushed, including the ending. Overall though, I enjoyed the story and had a lot of fun reading it.

Gemma is heartbroken and performs this witchy ritual to erase the day she met her ex. The only problem is that she met her best friend, Dax, that same day.
When she wakes up in a parallel universe where she has never met her ex, life seems better. She has a better job even though she lives in a basement. She has more friends because she hasn’t wasted the last 4 years with her ex and actually socialized. And she fulfilled her dream of opening her own store.
But Dax doesn’t remember her and thinks her some crazy stalker, So she decides to do the ritual again but now she has to wait for a month when the moon is in the same phase. Of course during this time she ends up falling for him and realizes he’s always been into her. Which makes her consider that maybe she can stay in this universe forever.
But the grass is not always greener on the other side. Turns out her dating her ex for 4 years wasn’t a complete waste after all...

Amazing!!!!!! I loved this book with all my heart. It was such a unique story and unlike anything I have ever read. Really this would make for an amazing movie or show.

What a great Romcom with all the feels!!! I can't wait to read more by Kate Robb.

Gemma is so relatable, and I was rooting for her the entire book. Dax is everything you could ever ask for in a book boyfriend. The plot is chefs kiss!

The ending had me in tears. I really adored this book so much. Thank you NetGally!

Highly Highly recommend!!

Ahhhh this book! Kate Robb has written romance GOLD. Perfection—I seriously can not find any flaws. I love a book with heart and this made me feel all the emotions associated with the terrifying thought of taking it one step further with your best friend. Kate Robb does an EXCELLENT job of working through the scary emotions of tipping the scales from the side of friendship only to romantic interest. In this single POV friends-to-lovers tale, Gemma (with a G—thanks Snake) has recently broken up with her boyfriend Stuart of four and a half years. Her constants in her life, sister Kiersten, Aunt Livi, and best friend Dax are the people Gemma can count on to help with her heartbreak whether it’s with a pitcher of margaritas or box of Nana’s doughnuts. But when a love curse/spell is performed to help Gemma get over her heartache, a kiss is required to break her luck. As the only male around, Dax is tribute, but perhaps this “friendly” kiss has more meaning behind it than it should?
Gemma is thrust into an alternate universe where her relationship with Stuart didn’t happen and she doesn’t have her best friend anymore. I loved that Gemma had to figure out what she wanted from Dax and how to win him over after a disastrous meet cute. In a way, it was like seeing their friendship begin all over again and I loved how it pushed Gemma to confront her feelings for Dax. Oh boy Dax. Let me pause for effect…
I loved his character so much. Even though we never have his point of view, he’s so transparent (even when he isn’t to Gemma), so thoughtful, he pursues Gemma and is exactly what you’d look for in a friend to lover relationship. In my mind he’s the perfect book boyfriend, also so stinking hot and a man that makes curling look good? It’s no wonder Gemma wants to jump him every chance she gets. Let me tell you, the sex in this story is hot. Hot-hot. I was right there with Gemma wanting to climb him like a tree, glorious manhood and everything (some of the funniest scenes are of Gemma talking about what’s happening under Dax’s sweatpants).
Not only is the relationship between Dax and Gemma explored more in this alternate reality, but Kiersten is a big part of Gemma’s life too. She is the BEST big sister: funny, hot mom energy, always a bit of a mess, and really loves her sister. I would absolutely read a book about Kiersten and husband Trent (hint hint Kate Robb?) getting their HEA. I also loved how the city and are outside of Toronto was a character in and of itself. You can tell that location is a big part of the story and I felt like there was a sense of place that made for a unique setting.
Even though I had a suspicion about how the book would end, I didn’t care because this story is so magical. I can definitely see a reread in my future and cannot believe this is Kate Robb’s debut novel. If she can write such tender, charismatic, and charming characters already, just sign me up for whatever she’s writing in the future. I received an advanced copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Thank you to @netgalley and @stmartinspress for an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book 25% in because the FMC is the type of person who gets in their own way sometimes, which is frustrating. However, her personal development was there and perceptible and the way she and Dax (re)connected in the alternative universe was sweet albeit awkward, haha. I think there could have been more body to how Dax became interested in Gemma because it seemed a little too insta-lovey. Though, I understand that it was due to an underlying comfort from the other universe. That was the only part that could have been beefed up.

This Spells Love by @kate_robb_writes is amazing storytelling. PERIOD!!! 🤩

Blurb: What if one little wish changed everything?

When Gemma gets dumped by her long-term boyfriend, she reacts the way any reasonable twenty-eight-year-old would: by getting drunk with her sister, kooky aunt, and best friend, Dax. After one too many margaritas, they decide to perform a love- cleansing spell, which promises to erase Gemma’s ex from her memory. They follow all the instructions, including a platonic kiss from Dax to seal the deal.

When Gemma wakes up, she realizes that this silly spell has worked. Not only does it seem that she never dated her ex, but the rest of her life is completely unrecognizable. The worst part: Dax has no idea who she is.

To reverse the spell and get back to her old life, Gemma must convince her once-best-friend-now-near-stranger to kiss her. But as she carries out her plans, she finds herself falling for him—hard. Soon, Gemma begins to wonder whether she even wants to go back to the way things once were. What if Dax was The One all along?

🌟🌟🌟🌟

I was sooooo invested in this book!!! The concept is so unique and fun. Gemma is so relatable and I love her personality so much!!! Dax is the most caring guy I wish I had, and he is honestly hot too. Gemma’s relationship with her sister is super sweet and reminds me of my relationship with my own sister (she is 12 years older than me instead of 10). Her aunt is also very amazing and supportive, and had some of the best lines!!! The witchy vibes were immaculate, there were scenes that made me laugh out loud, and scenes that made me cry. This Spells Love is a romantic and heartfelt read, that is perfect for fall/winter!!! 🧹🖤✨
