This was such a cute little book. It gave me Practical Magic vibes mixed with 13 Going On 30. It was nice to see that even though she wasn’t necessarily from that universe most of her support system was the same. My only question for the whole book is what happened to the Gemma that was originally there?
This is funny! I was so pleasantly surprised to find out this was a debut novel. There are many seasoned authors who don't write novels this easy to read. This was a great pallette cleanser. It was an easy, lighthearted romance in the same vein as Emily Henry and I'm happy I read it! I tend to be very picky about my romance and I would read this author again for sure. I will say I understand nothing about curling, but that didn't stop me from enjoying this read. 😂 And the second time now I've snagged an ARC that's also a BOTM! (A good sign 😉) I would have picked it this month if I hadn't read it already. Definitely recommend!
Thank you Netgalley and Random House for the ARC!
What an amazing debut book. There was romance and a bit of magic. If you had the option to travel to a parallel universe and see yourself down a different path in life would you? That’s what happens with Gemma during one night of doing a witchy spell with her aunt and sister after a break up. She still has the same people in her life, in this parallel universe but her relationship with her best friend Dax is different.
In this universe Gemma’s life is different, she’s not as reserved as she is in her “real,” universe. She doesn’t have the same ex. She doesn’t work at a job that she doesn’t enjoy. But the biggest difference is she doesn’t have her best friend.
Throughout the story you can see Gemma figuring out her feelings for Dax, you can also see what is was missing all along. There’s a lot that happens during her stay in the parallel universe. During her stay she also takes a step back to reflect what she wants from this universe that isn’t there in her original universe. She also reflects on her relationship with her loved ones.
Will she stay, if given the chance to go back home? Or will she stay in this universe where it seems like she has everything she wanted?
.Loveddddd this one. I really liked the idea of the book. Gemma wants to cure her heart by drinking and casting a love spell. She wakes up in an alternate universe where she has it all. It’s one of those books that teaches us the grass isn’t always greener. I loved that it wasn’t predictable and love how it ended. It was cute and lighthearted and Dax has just been added to the book boyfriend list. Must read!
What an amazing book, especially as a debut. This Spells Love asks the question: if given the chance to start anew, would you follow the same life path, or would you choose a different road? The story was a delightful and unique story. Gemma and Dax are relatable characters, who are easy to root for in their friends-to-lovers romance.
In summary Gemma is heartbroken and performs this witchy ritual to erase the day she met her ex. The only problem is that she met her best friend, Dax, that same day. And the problems begin.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC. I am so happy I read this book in October. The magic, the parallel universe timeline was so much fun. I enjoyed this book and am excited to read more by Kate Robb.
Gemma is reeling from a breakup from her long-term boyfriend. So she reacts like any young woman would, by getting drunk with her sister, aunt, and her best friend Dax and casting a love cleaning spell to forget about her ex. It might sound crazy, but what has she got to lose?
Gemma wakes up from her margarita filled night in an unfamiliar place. She’s not quite sure what is going on, but it appears shes in a different reality where she has never met her ex, and her best friend has no idea who she is.
In order to get back her old life, Gemma must realize what she is truly looking for and wanting. Can she do it and reverse the spell?
It wasn’t until this year, and this book particularly, that I realized how much I time skip, or parallel universe type romance. I also am a sucker for a friends to lover romance, so this one was just about the perfect read for me. While the romance in this one was what I would consider a slow burn, I really enjoyed it. I usually get bored, but this one held my attention right from the beginning, and it didn’t let up. I loved Gemma, and how much she few over the course of the book. She started out as so unsure of herself, but then she learned that she can trust herself, and she does have value. I loved the relationship that she and her sister had as well. Her sister was her ultimate supporter and that was so heartwarming. I also loved the relationship Gemma had with her aunt. Dax was also a fun character and reading about the conflicting personalities he had in each universe was interesting.
If you are looking for a truly enjoyable romance, then check this one out.
Thank you so much to Random House, Dial Press Trade Paperback, and Netgalley for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publishers for this Advanced Readers Copy of This Spells Love by Kate Robb!
3 Stars An enjoyable "sliding doors" type romance. It was fun to read about both sides of Gemma's life, including how it could have been if she'd never met her best friend Dax. The chemistry between Gemma and Dax was natural and undeniable. A great story about going after what you truly want.
This spells love was super enjoyable. Lots of relatable moments that we’ve all experienced when trying to make a good impression on someone we are interested in and the drama of jumping to conclusions before knowing all of the facts. While magic helped our MFC see what an alternative path could have been she realizes that messing with something can also hurt someone else and to make sure this is really a good choice. The romance of friends to lovers is done very well and tastefully. Our MCs have great chemistry and their steamy scenes deliver the spice. I highly recommend giving this a read if you are looking for a romance story that makes you root for the happy ending but also characters going after what they truly want in their lives.
I've been anticipating this book for a while now and it did not disappoint! After a breakup, Gemma's quirky aunt suggests she do a magic spell to cleanse the memory of her ex. Only Gemma wakes up in an alternate dimension where she's not only cleansed her ex from her life, but she never met her best friend Dax either. In the "new" world, she befriends Dax and the two of them fall in love making Gemma wonder if she wants to go back to her old life where they are still only friends.
I love "sliding doors" type of books and this one was so well written. I was completely drawn into Gemma's world (both of them). I felt the chemistry between her and Dax and really enjoyed the dynamic between Gemma and her older sister. It's hard to believe this is the author's debut. I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next!
Magical realism and a rom-com. This was a fun story. The main characters worked together. Glad that I read this one
I really enjoyed this book!! Watching Gemma on her journey of growth and trusting herself was beautiful. I want a best friend like Dax, someone who listens and would move mountains to be there and support you. It was wonderful!
Received this as an ARC from Kate Robb and Netgalley
Honestly the cutest story I have ever read. The story line was unique and kept me hooked. It reminds you that sometimes the best thing in life are right in front of you. Also that even if you got the chance to change the course of your life doesn’t mean it’s always going to be the best thing. Read this book in literally a day! Thank you so much for this amazing book Kate I can’t wait to read more from you ♥️
Overall, this book is five stars all around. Romance, mystery, smut, character development, etc.
Dax and Gemma are so cute and relatable. Aunt Livi is one of my fave characters of all time. I love the idea of a spell taking someone to a different timeline as opposed to just switching everything around and then switching them all back.
This book is so cute and so cozy. It gives off freaky Friday but with yourself in a different universe vibes. It’s friends to lovers and there is so much self development of Gemma! I loved the relationship between Gemma and her sister. There was so much growth and love that I was really routing for them. Aunt Livi was hilarious and the perfect amount of unexpected! So so cute and a great October read!
I normally don’t enjoy parallel universe plots, however, I loved This Spells Love! I found the story to be well written and entertaining with unique characters. I enjoyed Gemma and Dax’s best friends to lovers plot. I’d highly recommend if you’re looking for a fun, entertaining and engaging romantic comedy. Thank you again to the publisher and netgalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I really loved this book so much! I just could not put it down! I loved the chemistry between Dax and Gemma as well as the dynamics with Gemma and her family. I found the characters to be unique but also very relatable, and I was rotting for them all to be happy the whole time. I couldn't help but keep reading this book because I just had to know what was going to happen!
It was the perfect rom com!
My one tiny complaint is that I wish I that Dax and Gemma would have re-met in a different way to make Dax's following interactions with Gemma a little more believable, but I still rated 5 stars because I have not stopped thinking about this book since I finished it!
Thank you to @netgalley and Random House Publishing Group for an advanced review copy in exchange for my honest opinion!
First thing’s first, this is not an unfamiliar concept in romance, especially if you’re one of those people who loves to watch Hallmark romance movies around the holiday.
Wishing to forget something in life and having it work, only to realize you’ve messed up royally? Yep. We’ve all seen it before. That being said.
I freaking love it.
The reason she realizes that it was a mistake is a spoiler so stop reading now.
Her best friend. The bestest of friends. Someone who is totally awesome, like I fell in love with him from the moment he appeared on the page.
I understand her distress for sure. I would miss him too.
I appreciated both versions of Dax though, as both of them were kind, but tough and tried their best at everything they did.
One version of Gemma might have ended up a little tougher than the other in the end, and I really appreciated her plight before and after the wish had been made.
This is friends to lovers in the best way, with no real third act breakup. And for those who might be worried about the magic in this book? It’s not so crazy out there as you might expect.
This was fine, it was a cute concept with magical realism. It was a nice fluff read for friends-to-lovers debut romance book. ARC kindly provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed this unique spin on a friends-to-lovers + sliding doors romance. I found myself reaching for this book often, curious about how things would resolve in the end. The characters are really well-developed, including the excellent side characters, and even though the main character bugged me at times, I could see growth across the story, which helped me root for her (and for the love story).
For those looking for steam, this has it! Very open door (at least for my easily blush-able sensibilities).
The sliding doors aspect has a bit of a magical twist, similar to 13 Going On 30, but I think the title of the book might lead to some disappointed readers who are looking for more witchy vibes. I wonder if some of the witchy elements ended up on the cutting room floor since there seemed to be a few unresolved threads related to the MC's magical/witchy/mystical Aunt Livi.
Read this if you like alternate reality, 'what if' stories - this book really offers a fun, unique set-up to explore that premise. Snappy, modern writing makes for an enjoyable read all around.
