I wish I could give this book a higher rating. This thriller was hard to put down and the character development was incredible - until the 75% mark. The ending felt thrown together out fo sync with the rest of the book. That said, I'm looking forward to reading more of Wendy Heard's work as she branches out from the YA genre.
This one was an okay read, it wasn't spectacular but it was a good read. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and seeing them try to figure out the mystery. The ending was a bit confusing but I enjoyed it.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing an advance copy in exchange for honest feedback. A great thriller showing the dark side of the uber rich
I've enjoyed Wendy Heard's previous books, and this thriller didn't disappoint. What a ride. The suspense kept me glued to the page. It was fast paced and thrilling and loved every minute of it.
I really enjoyed this book! It had my attention from the beginning, from when I learned about Summer and Leo's lifestyle, and kept me hooked the whole time. I loved Summer and Leo's stories, but separately and the story of their life together. There was never a dull moment in the book, and I tore through it because I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I would definitely recommend this to those who like thrillers and I think the uberwealth aspect of it was really interesting too. Thank you to Bantam and NetGalley for this ARC!
I didn’t finish this book. It lost my attention early on and I tried to finish but it wasn’t happening, it really wasn’t for me
Summer and Leo are the best of friends, having found one another at some of the lowest points in their life. Their bond is a strong as it gets and they are thick as thieves. Literally.
The two young women live a vagabond-ish lifestyle funded by the hard work of others. Summer is a skilled pickpocket while Leo is a con artist of sorts, using her immense beauty to get money out of men. Leo has set her sights on a tech guru named Michael after he likes a picture on her Instagram post. “Coinicidentally” the two bump into each other at a party and hit it off.
Not long after this run in with Michael, Leo goes missing and Summer knows this is not like her friend and she is bound to find out what happened to her. Which leads her to an isolated island in the middle of nowhere with no way out. Will the two women be reunited and in what condition?
I found this book enjoyable and did not see the ending coming! The beginning was a tad slow to me but the story did pick up and really take off. Some of the parts of the book were quite a stretch of the imagination but then again this is fiction novel meant to entertain, and entertain it did!
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group-Ballantine for this amazing arc in exchange for an honest review!
This was an unusual book, to say the least. It's a story about 2 friends that have each other's back. The format of the book is a little different, it goes back and forth between the 2 friends. Leo disappears during the process of trying to scam a wealthy tech guy. Summer never gives up on her. She puts herself in danger trying to find her. This was an easy read, doesn't take too much out of the reader.
Thank you to NetGalley, Wendy Heard and Random House Publishing Group for the opportunity to read this ARC.
Wow. You Can Trust Me is definitely a solid thriller, these con artists take you on an exciting wild ride.
Unfortunately this book didn’t work for me and was a DNF but I am sure other readers will feel differently! Thank you for the ARC!
Thank you Netgalley for the advance reader copy of You Can Trust Me by Wendy Heard in exchange for an honest review. This book was a slow burn and delved into the loneliness, friendships and dangers of a girl who does not exist.
I appreciated that it was fast paced- I didn't find myself being bored! I would just say it was a little confusing at times, but it was ultimately a good thriller.
Michael's weird island compound offers an atmospheric (read: creepy) setting, and this is a fast read. There are certainly some twists, even if some felt a bit telegraphed from afar. If you're looking for a quick page-turner, you'll enjoy YOU CAN TRUST ME.
Coming in with somewhat high hopes, based on some very public reviews of this book, I was fairly disappointed. The story is dubbed a thriller, and it perhaps is - in bits and pieces.
Summer and Leo are best friends, chosen sisters for each other, kindred spirits, who live the #vanlife and get by with small-time cons. With this basic premise, the story tries to take on the tech industry, the patriarchy, MeToo - all with the backdrop of a mystery of some sort, powered by alternating first-person narratives from the dual lead characters of Summer and Leo.
To be honest, I was left confused by their characters, and that may be just my unfamiliarity with their way of life, or where they come from, or just California in general. Either way, I found it difficult to empathize with either, and realized early on that I should also check-in my credulity at the door. Through a series of incredibly questionable circumstances, and equally questionable characters, through equally questionable interaction, the story races through from LA to a tech billionaire's personal island, and there are flashbacks that reveal more of the backstory, while our intrepid explorer face hostile natural environments and even more hostile enemy combatants (!), to reveal the truth - with no concern for personal safety.
I will point out - the author did have a reasonably decent plot, and there are parts where Summer is almost believable and real. Some of her one-liners are superb and spot-on, but sadly those are few and far in between.
Just not for me.
I heard so many good things about this one but ultimately it was a DNF for me. The story was all over the place and very confusing to follow.
Well that wasn’t what I expected at all, but I liked it a lot more than I thought I would once I started reading. Really liked the two main characters and the setup was unique. I also really liked that there were a few points where I thought the story was going to be predictable, but then I was proven wrong! Love when that happens, honestly. Definitely a page-turner that kept me entertained and it was also just an overall great story.
Summer and Leo have bonded by their traumatic pasts. They rely on each other to survive on the road, living in a car and funding their lifestyle by stealing and conning the wealthy. After Leo is invited to the private island of a billionaire she goes missing. Summer would do anything to find Leo.
This book was such a nice surprise. One of the best thrillers I have read! There were so many turns this story took and I never knew what was going to happen next! I stayed up late reading because I had to know how things ended. I was really rooting for Summer and Leo. They needed each other after all they had been through.
The ending kind of threw me off. I don't think I got the answers justice that I wanted. I am a big fan of a revenge story and this didn't quite give me what I wanted.
But I would absolutely still recommend this book!
Thank you to Netgalley and Random House Publishing Group for sending me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Two women forming an unexpected friendship as grifters, conspirers, and then a midway twist that has you reviewing everything you thought you knew about their friendship. This was a fun sneak peek into the glamorous world of the wealthy too. A five star read!
Loved this thriller! Though the main characters are female con artist they are very likeable! Many twist and turns that have you not wanting to put it down. The powerful friendship prevails in the end and the ending wraps things up nicely! Thank you Netgalley for the ARC! Cant wait to read more Wendy Heard books.
Summer and Leo are grifters, living from score to score. When Leo disappears, Summer investigates and discovers much more is going on than either one assumes. It took me a couple of chapters into this book to really get interested in the story - probably because it's harder to identify with two thieves than with some other characters. However, once it got my attention I couldn't put it down and I ended up reading the rest in one sitting.
I'd call it primarily a thriller - the story has action and a lot of suspense. I did end up liking the characters, and really wondering what would (and had) happened to them!
