Easily a 4 star, satisfying way to spend the day. Netgalley sent me It Ends at Midnight around 9 am this morning, and here I am at, lol almost midnight on the same day, and I'm done and writing the review. This was a compelling listen. I did not stop all day, and have a cleaner house thanks to the audiobook.
Dual timelines, young kids who make mistakes who then grow up to be adults who make mistakes. I thought I had it all figured out, but, alas, Harriet Tyce fooled me and although I had snippets, I was still pleasantly surprised by the end.
The narration flowed and did not get in the way of the characters - perfect.
I'm now going to get Tyce's previous novel which I understand is phenomenal. That's the highest praise a reader can give.
Thank you to Highbridge Audio for allowing me to listen in advance of the 2/21/23 release date.
Okay, I finished this book in less than six hours, and I'm still perplexed by the outcome, and we love a book that leaves me confused (in a good way.) So, I am VERY thankful to Sourcebooks, Harriet Tyce, HighBridge Audio, and NetGalley for granting me both an audiobook and a finished copy, complete with an autograph and some goodies. Yall didn't mess around with this fast-paced thriller! It Ends at Midnight is available to the public on February 21, 2023, which is my birthday as well, and I know yall are tired of hearing that by now, but there are perks to sharing your birthday with a pub day!
Sylvie is at the top of her game, sitting in as a district judge and fighting to the top to secure a Crown Court placement. She's recently scored a new hot boyfriend, and life is swimmingly until she learns of her best friend's cancer diagnosis, which sends her into a pit of despair. Tess is in the middle of separating from her husband and has hit rock bottom with this new installment in her life. But Sylvie saves the day by resolving Tess's "death bed" wishes, reuniting her with her husband, and making peace with their ages-old secret that they've burned and buried -- to make nice with Linda, an old foe who they wrongfully accused of killing Sylvie's former boyfriend.
Yep, that's a lot to digest, but trust me, this book is a trip. I don't want to spoil it even further, but page after page will lead you to believe that perhaps our dutiful narrator and her best friend aren't all they seem.
