DNFed - I chose to DNF this book in the past. I am typing as a review so it doesn't harm my %. I haven't chose to pick the title back up.
I liked this cozy mystery. The title and name of the bakery implied more weed storyline but that wasn’t the case. Which is fine by me but if one was hoping for more, you could be disappointed. Still a good cozy mystery.
It's been a while since I enjoyed a book this much. I love the the author was able to weave in so much backstory without dragging the story down. I love the sense of family, in whatever shape it is. I love the way she dealt with eating disorders and bullying and the aftereffects of each. Most cozies use the same old tropes. This was delightfully different and I really enjoyed the story. I can't wait for the next book in the series!
This is the first in a series, and I tend to like trying out books of a series to see if there is something in it for future me. I sometimes do the choosing in such a hurry that I might not pay attention to the contents of the plotline. This was one such situation.
I am not against the consumption of weed for recreational purposes per se, but I have never enjoyed being around even drunk people, so this was a stretch into slightly uncomfortable territory concept-wise.
That said, the topic itself is a secondary thing in the narrative. Our lead protagonist is a foreign returnee who had to come back home to care for her ailing grandmother. Once home, she is trying to find her footing when she is attacked by an old classmate. This same classmate is found dead with a knife in him the next day. This is where the actual plot begins.
Since her aunt is a suspect, Chloe begins to dig into things and figure out who the actual culprit is.
The investigation is haphazard at best, and she manages to stumble onto a few other secrets before uncovering the true killer. I think I enjoyed this mostly because of the narrative style and the fact that I had an audio version, which made the pacing a lot of fun.
I have no doubt that fans of this sub-genre will enjoy the chaotic nature of the investigation because it makes the ' amateur detection ' part of the mystery seem more realistic.
I would read another book by the author, but perhaps not this series.
I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the review is entirely based on my own listening experience.
My first foray into cozy mysteries! This book was a lot of fun. The vibes were a perfect ratio of cute and funny. Although I wasn't DYING to know whodunnit, I was charmed through the entire book and never found myself bored. And another plus is that I didn't predict the ending! Overall this was a great debut on the part of Emily George, I'm excited to see what she does next.
Also she's Australian, which is the land of Bluey and 5SOS, so.
I was disappointed. Not in the story but since it was titled a “cannabis cafe” murder I was hoping for more blurbs or innuendos about smoking or weed. I enjoyed her relationship with her grandma and becoming successful with her cafe, I just assumed it would have more “cannabis”
A cozy-mystery mixed with baked goods is always a perfect match! This adventurous story of Chloe, who only wants to keep her aunt safe, is adjusting to life back at her small-town home after a whole string of bad news.
How do you start over again and have the courage to try a new adventure in life? I loved how it challenged the norm and tried to branch into an out of the box thinking with a new business. This story was completely relatable, with loveable characters, many laughs and cozy feels.
This was a pretty quick and fun read once I sat and finally listened to this book. I enjoyed trying to figure out who did it while being fascinated learning about the stigma of using cannabis to help those who are going through chemo. This is a book you can read in any season because although there is. a murder, there's something cozy about the book.
I sadly had to dnf but I just really couldn’t get into it. I didn’t like the characters and the storyline just wasn’t it for me.
Thanks NetGalley for an advanced copy of the audiobook
I did not finish this one, it was not for me, I couldn't relate to the characters, and just did not care for the story.
Great first book for this series. A young woman is starting a legal cannabis bake shop and discovers a body. There are some strong characters here and the premise is a fun one. I admit that I was more intrigued by the pot pastries and the baking techniques than the murder, but I'm usually that way when the murder victim wasn't very likable. Yeah, yeah...someone killed the jerk. Let's get back to the baking! Fun book. I'll check out #2 if/when it becomes available.
I really enjoyed listening 🎧 to this book. Was well written book. I will be checking out more books.
Thank you, Netgalley, for the ARCs!
I didn’t know I was craving a cozy murder mystery until I started this book. Admittedly, I requested the ARCs for this book solely for the cannabis bakery, and it delivered. I’d definitely try some of these recipes if I was into that lifestyle.
Everything about this book — the characters, the setting — was comforting. There’s something so charming about the town, maybe because it feels like one I spent the past two months in (or even my hometown, especially since my street name was in the book).
I had my bets on who the murderer was and it was so much fun to try and solve the mystery alongside Chloe, especially since so many people seemed to have a motive. It’s been a while since I read a murder mystery that kept my interest and I didn’t guess it so I might have lost my touch. Oh well, still enjoyed it.
(Also, "the boy knows how to make a gesture" - I would love to receive a chilli plant like, god. We love Jake here).
I’ll happily continue this series. I need to read more about the cannabis bakery.
This wasn't my favorite. I just had a very hard time getting into this story. I wanted to like this, but I wasn't able to finish it.
A Half-Baked Murder was a very cute cozy mystery. I enjoyed the twist of the cannabis bakery, quirky Aunt, and small town setting. For being a mystery, I found a lot of parts felt like a big hug. The characters were very endearing!
I absolutely loved listening to this addictive cozy mystery! It was so much fun. The narrator had an incredible style of narrating the story - and I loved every second of it!
Cannot wait to read more from the author! <3
Part of me wanted to get high as I write this but being high as I listened was just iconic and so much fun like this book.
I had a great time listening to this audiobook. It was cute and narrator is amazing! Interesting plot and I enjoy how the story build up. Thanks so much NetGally and publisher to the great opportunity. I am looking forward to upcoming books from the author. #AHalfBakedMurder #NetGalley
This was a great cozy mystery! I enjoyed the characters and it was a lighthearted and fun read! I don’t think this book will be for everyone, as it centers around a controversial subject. I enjoyed all the humor!
This was an absolutely adorable cozy mystery. The narrator was fantastic and the story had me intrigued right from the beginning.
