An important book about one of the most intelligent and important woman in the world. A very good book for children so we can remember Katherine Johnsons work.
Graphic novels are a fantastic way for young readers to be introduced to new topics. I LOVE that graphic biographies are now a thing, as well!
Young Katherine Johnson is wonderful! As a 3rd grade teacher, I am eager to share it with my students. Readers can take many things away from Young Katherine Johnson. I feel that it encourages perseverance, equality, and the need to continue dreaming. A great read for upper elementary students!
Thank you for the opportunity to read this gem!
I have not read many graphic biographies, but this one was wonderful. It was engaging and I personally learned a lot from it. I think it would be a good way to get reluctant readers to want to read nonfiction. I will be adding this to my classroom library and will look for others like it.
Katherine Johnson is my niece's biggest hero. Getting to read this with her while she tried to solve some of the math problems was so much fun. She really enjoyed reading about Katherine as a kid since everything she's seen about her so far has been about her work as an adult. I highly recommend this for classrooms, or if there's a kid in your life that enjoys math and science.
This is an excellent book—a good story, told in a manga/comic book way, about Katherine Johnson and what she must have been like as a kid. It makes math fun, and the questions are unthreatening—plus the answers are in the book! It is quite funny as well. It makes Katherine Johnson seem approachable and just like a regular kid, rather than an intellectual icon.
This book was provided to me as an advance readers copy, but was not dependent on a favorable review. My opinions are my own.
Great introduction to Katherine Johnson. This would be a great book to incorporate into a math class.
This would be an excellent addition to my classroom biography section. This book was really fun because the comic book style story telling also had various math puzzles to solve as you read. The kids will love the interactive format.
This book is more for children and middle grade students. I think it could be very interesting to practice doing math while keeping a fun approach and learning more about a mythical figure: Katherine Johnson.
I only regret that there is not more biographical information. Of course the fun approach requires taking liberties but I find it a bit sad not to learn more about the life of this incredible woman.
I absolutely love learning more about Katherine Johnson, so I was super excited to pick up the new Young Katherine Johnson book. This tells some stories about her growing up in the form of comic strips. A lot of funny ones but some series ones too about the racism she and her family had to deal with. I thought this was a fun approach to teach some good lessons and some history as well, both of which very important, in a way that kids would enjoy. It also has some interactive math related questions throughout with answers at the end of the book so you can see if you figured it out correctly.
I received a free e-copy of this book from NetGalley in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.
This book is perfect for children to read about Katherine Jonhson when she was a young girl. This is such a nice way to get them to relate to her and be inspired by her life.
Not only is it a cute and fun read, but it’s also tackling essential themes such as black identity, being different and having different interests from one’s peers and the historical and social consequences of segregation. These are such important subjects to teach young children, and it’s done in a very thoughtful way.
I also really like the math problems they can resolve along the way, with the different levels of difficulty. It will surely get some children interested in math and astronomy because of the very simple, playful way in which it is approached, through ordinary activities and conversations of Katherine's daily life.
The end of the book is filled with useful information and helpful pages such as a biography and a teaching guide, which is a great bonus.
I love Katherine so much! She’s the nerd I needed to be best friends with. I love young Sheldon Cooper, Dexter and the likes. So you know how she is! And I totally adore the comics. Each page has an amazing story to tell. Of course she may be annoying to some but we got to protect this kid at all cost!
If you love comic strips and are a hardcore fan, definitely check this one out for sure. I highly recommend this comic collection!
Thank you, Humanoids Inc, for the advance reading copy.
Thanks to NetGalley and publisher Humanoids Inc. for allowing me to read this before the publishing date. (Although March 6th isn’t that far off!)
This was such a great little story! The graphic novel format was great and I loved the small “chats” young Katherine had with the other characters. Katherine and her chicken cracked me up! And we can’t forget the added fun of the math problems integrated into the story! So much fun!
This would make a great addition to an upper elementary or middle grade classroom. I may just have to add it to my own!
There are other “Young” biographies for Agatha Christie (yes! How fun!) Leonardo and Mozart. I definitely have to read them!
🚀 This book is awesome! It is a unique look at the genius mathematician Katherine Johnson. The book is presented as a graphic novel depicting Johnson as a young child and each page is all about numbers and how she saw the world through the lens of mathematics. Some pages even have challenges for the reader to solve math problems discussed on the page (solutions are included in the back of the book).
🚀 Katherine Johnson is one of my heroes (first black woman to work at NASA) and I’ve reviewed books about her before. If you or your children aren’t familiar with her, I highly recommend this book. Everyone should know about Katherine Johnson.
🚀 I love reading about brilliant women in STEM fields. This book is a must in any library or classroom.
Thank you @netgalley and @HumanoidsInc for an eARC of this book, which I have read and reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Young Katherine Johnson is unlike any children's book I've ever seen or read. I recently read Hidden Figures so I was immediately drawn to this graphic novel since Katherine Johnson is so fascinating to me. The bulk of the book is comic pages of Katherine Johnson as a child. I love that some actual mathematical puzzles were included. Stars give the level of difficulty and solutions were given at the end of the book. The end of the book also included a biography and so many other fun extras such pre-reading activities, discussion questions, project ideas, and more.
This would be a great addition to a classroom and would make the perfect gift for a young reader.
Thank you to NetGalley and Humanoids Inc for allowing me to be an early reader. All opinions are my own.
A very nice book for kids to inspire them and make them laugh at the same time!
I thought it would a typical biography graphic novel but it’s a collection of strips with stories from her childhood. It talks about her love and talent for maths but also how she saw the world, her relationship with her family,…
I love that it’s also filled with small math problems for kids to solve (with answers provided) and some games at the end of the book. There are also some activities ideas for teachers/ parents.
At the end there’s a few pages with a biography and some pictures of her!
