This is a really fun book to introduce the changing of seasons to young readers. I particularly like the lyrical style of the words that make it a delightful read aloud book. The book uses some wonderfully descriptive words which I love as a way to expand my children’s vocabulary. The pictures were lovely as well and had my children saying, “I want to go there!”
Sweet book about family adventures in the summer. A quick and simple book, but still descriptive. Beautiful scenery abounds as the family explores different places and sees different animals in each biome. This book will inspire you to get outside.
Join a family as they make the most of a glorious summer by spending time outdoors, and exploring nature. This is just a nice, pleasant book that makes you feel the warm sunshine, and may encourage your young ones (okay, maybe a few older ones, too) to get outside and do some adventuring on their own.
As a child who lived for the outdoor adventures of summer and attended summer camp almost every year, and later worked many summers as a staff member, When Summer Comes took me back in time. When Summer Comes is perfect for the start of the season. It will have many children dreaming of all the adventures they might have.
Thank you to Netgalley and Sasquatch Books, Little Bigfoot for providing me with a review copy.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. A fun book about all the activities you can do in the summer.
After Winter (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/3536564626) and with Fall to happen somewhen, comes this love letter to the wild outdoors in summer. Here the human characters paddle canoes, bike to swimming spots in the mountains, paddleboard and just generally soak in all the wonders of the northern American summer – with never a midge or mosquito to put anyone off. We see them hike, wander, camp and randomly explore, and it's all wonderful – helped of course by the realism and craft in the art, which really does make this idyllic. If it should matter to anyone, they're people of colour, too – but this for me is about showing off and thanking the great natural world – it's not all about This Mountain and That-Hole-in-Rock National Park, it's just the non-specific, average countryside being admired. And it's very pleasant to see.
I received a copy of this book through Netgalley. This is my honest review.
This book didn't rhyme, but it felt like it should have. And I felt that way before seeing it described as poetic. I realize poetry doesn't have to rhyme, but there really was something about this story that made me feel like it should.
Ignoring the lack of rhymes, it was a fun story detailing all the fun things you can do in nature in the summer time. This family either took a nice long vacation across the country, or they live in like California where you can absolutely hit the ocean, mountains, and forest in fairly short order. Most of the country doesn't have the ocean as a readily available option for summer fun (and I'm jealous!)
The illustrations were colorful and engaging, drawing you into the story with clear lines and solid shading. I'd be fine reading this story a few times before I'd start to get sick of it, probably, although that rhyming thing may change that. Overall I give this book 3.68 out of 5 stars.
This story has me looking forward to the summer with its beautiful pictures of the outdoor summer activities. Children will enjoy this story that is sure to spark conversation of summers past and present.
This beautifully illustrated story makes me wish that summer would be here now! It's such a lovely book about all of the simple, but amazing adventures that happen during the summer months. From exploring to stargazing, this is picture book does a wonderful job of capturing the beauty of the warmest season.
What a cute read! Perfect to read to the kids on the weekends and summer time to encourage outdoor fun! I really enjoyed that the main focus of this book was on summer and all of the outdoor activities you can do.
With detailed, colorful illustrations and lilting rhyme, When Summer Comes is an ode to all that nature has to offer us in the warmest season. In addition to being a charming story about camping, hiking, biking, and swimming to connect with. nature, this book portrays a family of color exploring the outdoors, filling a gap in the field of children's literature. This would make a great read at the end of the school year as we start looking toward summer activities!
A very simple children's book in verse depicting the outdoor joys of summer season. The book makes you long for summer. Best part about this book is the illustrations. Loved it. Very creative.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for providing me an ARC for this book.
This book about all the outdoor joys of summer will be a perfect mentor text for helping my students write descriptive sentences. It made me long for an end to winter. The illustrations were beautiful.
Loved this!
I didn’t realize before reading it that the author and publishing company is from the Seattle area, but through the illustrations I immediately knew it was the Pacific Northwest that the author was describing.
Fun, relatable family outing story, Well done!
Thankyou to Author Aimée M Bissonette, illustrator Erin Hourigan, publisher Sasquatch Books and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this!
