I was so excited when I got the ARC for this book! From the cute cover to the description, I couldnt wait to read this!
This was a really cute contemporary romance. The character stories were very fun to follow. I loved Sophie's adventures as she seeks to find herself through her old relationships. Her struggles were really relatable too, so it was very fun to follow along and see her expand and grow. Dash is a hottie with a body who has his own struggles, which were written with so much care. Hes progress throughout the book was really heartwarming.
Overall a very enjoyable read!
Plot Twist by Erin La Rosa is a delightful contemporary romance about a failing romance writer, Sophie, and a recovering alcoholic, Dash, They are thrown into dual projects after a tumultuous night and find themselves growing closer each day, despite their reluctance to be in a serious relationship. The story is full of sweet moments where the main characters open up to one another and challenges that each face alone in pain. When Sophie and Dash finally learn to trust each other they realize that their story is the perfect love story! I really enjoyed the characters and their families as they were introduced in the book. My favorite quote was "You deserve to be loved, deeply, by someone worthy. Please remember that.."
This was a cute read. I got Runaway Bride vibes with Sophie's failure to commit along with adopting her partners favorite things/activities. I love the book writing element throughout and utilizing social media to move through ex's in a documenting manner.
Dash was a sweet but conflicting MMC. His struggles with addiction and hiding that from his friends and family were interesting to the story.
I did think that there might be a few too many elements of conflict within this story. The addiction, the family drama, the celebrity of it all, the stalker. Even writing it out now it just feels like a lot. But it was still a fun read. Love the addition of Richard the squirrel.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
Sophie loves writing a HEA…even if she doesn’t believe in love herself.
I started really intrigued with the story between Dash & Sophie but somewhere along the way I started to lose interest. I wish there had been more build up/pining between the two MC.
I enjoyed the complex story of Dash and almost felt like this was his story more than Sophie’s.
TW: Alcoholism, addiction, toxic relationship, emotional abuse.
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC in exchange of an honest review
When it takes me over a month to read a romance book - it's not a good sign. Here are some of my (personal) gripes with the book.
Tiktok references do not belong in MY romance books. I'm sorry but the internet moves so fast that by the time this was published, the references were so dated that I barely even remembered them.
There are SO many tropes in this book, one's that barely even fit the plot but are extremely marketable. He's her landlord but he's also an out of work actor that she (obviously) had a crush on.
She's his sister's best friend. She's a writer that can't find inspo besides interviewing her old exes as a form of self-discovery. And of course, even though they live next door to each other, there's somehow a one bed scene.
Maybe I could overlook everything if they had any chemistry but... I didn't see it. They fell for each other SO fast, but why? They've lived next door to each other for YEARS, but he sees her hungover one time and suddenly now he's in love? What about all the other times he's seen her??
Additionally, this book is set in the same universe as another, which I wasn't aware of but there's background with the MC's sister that only makes sense if you've read the previous one. That's probably my biggest pet peeve.
rep// recovery (alcohol)
cw// alcoholism
Ultimately, I just ended up not being the right audience for this novel.
While, I did feel the writing was really good and engaging I just could not relate to any character. I am not up to speed on different terms for the sexual preferences and what those mean. I found this to be a challenge early on in the book when the MFC began talking about her exes.
I don't feel like I can adequately review this book to social media outlets without it negatively affecting the author, and that is not my intent. Ultimately, I just wasn't the audience to enjoy this.

𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿: Erin La Rosa
𝗠𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: Plot Twist is a book with great spice and cute characters, and is an overall solid read. Nothing extremely deep but definitely a good time.
Unfortunately this book is just not for me.
The social media references are skewing very juvenile, and I’ve read books that use these platforms as a successful tool but this was just not executed very seamlessly.
DNFing at 25% as I find the characters hard to follow and not likeable.
Thank you to Netgalley for the review copy.
I wasn’t a huge fan of this romcom at all. The plot was weak, I didn’t really feel connected or cared about the characters, the writing was okay but not great. I did enjoy the pacemaker representation and I don’t think I’ve ever read a novel that included that so much it brought something new. I still ended up ordering this title for my library because I think a lot of people, especially those getting started or back into reading would find it an easy, enjoyable read.
unfortunately, i found this book SO hard to get into and spent a lot of time giving it a lot of tries but it just wouldn’t hook me so i dnfed around 30%. i think there was too much going on for me. mmc is dealing with recovery from alcoholism and an acting career nepo baby, but has a secret cooking tiktok and the fmc is a writer connecting with her exes a la “what’s your number?”. i almost wished their journeys were two separate stories rather than crammed into the same romance book. i just don’t think i’m the right audience. it was written well and i can see many people really liking the mmc based on his personality but i struggled with it.
I tried to read this book several times, but I just could never quite get into it. I think this speaks way more to me as a reader than La Rosa as a writer. I'll have to try another of hers some other time!
Sadly, I couldn't get into this one. While I love a good trope, this was not it for me. The writing was choppy and lackluster. (On the first page, almost every paragraph was only a sentence or two long and started with "She" or "So,".) The characters felt one-dimensional and immature yet also trying to do too much, and so collectively it just didn't work great for me. If I want cheesy romance, I want to like the characters and feel invested. Or I want the writing to be fantastic to makeup for the cheese fest. This missed the mark all around for me, unfortunately.
An adorable love story! I love books about books and this story about a romance author who’s never been in love was so good. Sophie has to overcome her writers block by reuniting with her exes to find out where it all went wrong. Starting a social media video to document, she enlists the help of her reclusive landlord, Dash. Over the course of the story, the two of them grow closer and sparks fly.
I liked this book a lot! It had me feeling all the things and wanting more. I can’t wait to read more romances from Erin La Rosa in the future!
Very cute, quick read! Great, potato-chippy romance with relatable characters. I would recommend those who love the genre to read this book.
I have mixed feelings on this one. On the one hand, I enjoyed the romance between Dash and Sophie, and that the story covered some heavier topics such as alcoholism and complicated family dynamics. On the other, I don't think this book executed the concept of "heroine reaching out to past flames to find out what went wrong" as well as other books I have read. At the same time, I had a hard time believing that Sophie would go viral in the way that she did (but maybe that's just me not understanding the fickle nature of TikTok and what goes viral). While I did enjoy a lot of the rom-com movie type of vibes throughout this book, I still enjoyed the first book in this series, For Butter or Worse, more.
There was a little too much going on in this book for my liking. We had stalking, addiction, family drama, lying, meeting up with exes and probably more. We could have been okay with just two of those things.
I also did not love Sophie. She was very self centered and I just didn’t vibe with her. I found the whole plot of her seeing her exes completely pointless.
Dash was lovely and probably the reason k kept reading.
Overall I liked the book but I didn’t love it. I do plan to read the other books in this series.
3 stars | 2 spice
There was a lot going on in this contemporary romance: romance (of course), writer's block, stalkers, struggling with addiction, meeting up with past exes, and family drama. I liked the idea that Sophie was going through her dating history to see where things went wrong, I also love a forbidden-type romance and how Dash was her brother's best friend AND her landlord.
The story itself was cute and I did like Sophie and Dash together. There's a little bit of spice in this, nothing too heavy but a solid 3-ish scenes. The spice was well written and not cringy like some are - but the cringe definitely comes out in their relationship and the fact they kept avoiding their feelings. It got a little annoying with the back and forth of Dash being like "I'm not good enough for her" and Sophie being all "I can't be with him."
There was a lot I appreciated though in the different representations like Sophie's pacemaker, LGBTQ+ reps, and alcohol addiction. I also appreciated the squirrel that kept terrorizing Dash.
Overall, a solid 3-star romance. Nothing wowed me about it but I wasn't disappointed either. I would like to check out the first in the series, For Butter or Worse. I would recommend this for a contemporary romance lover who doesn't need a lot of spice in their book but appreciates a little.
Big thanks to Erin La Rosa, Harlequin Trade Publishing and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinions!
This was a cute read. It held my attention and the characters were good. It just didn't wow me. It's a great book though and I still recommend you check it out!
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an arc of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
I really enjoyed Plot Twist and I love that Sophie is Nina's sister (from For Butter or Worse) because I was already connected with Nina's character from the last book and while this is a completely different story, I got to see how Nina and Leo are doing after theirs ended, which feels like an extended epilogue or extra chapter and that's just fun.
Sophie's character felt very relatable, she's a writer with writer's block, specifically a romance writer who hasn't felt like she's ever really been in love. I think that having a little bit of imposter syndrome is something most people can relate to and a lot of romance readers and writers can also probably agree that occasionally reading a ton of romance novels can lead to seeing idealized versions of their partners or wanting something that isn't actually what they have without knowing it. Dash is also really relatable because he's like the perfect example of middle child syndrome -- which doesn't actually require being the middle child but is more of a feeling of not being good enough and constantly being compared to your siblings. I always prefer a book where the characters are both relatable in some way so that definitely helped me connect to the characters more and I like that they are dealing with more than just trying to find love; Dash is working through his addiction and coming to terms with how he sees his future/career and Sophie is trying to work through her writer's block to finish her manuscript so that she doesn't lose her publishing contract/career over it, while also trying to find out why it is she's never fallen in love.
I'm not a TikTok girlie but it didn't bother me at all that it's referenced often and the basis for Sophie's self-discovery through her exes and Dash's outlet for his passion and his escape from all that's going on. This made sense to me since a lot of authors/celebrities/creators are utilizing TikTok, so our main characters: a romance author and an actor from a famous family would be using this platform either to sell their product/themselves and connect with fans or at least be really familiar with how to do so.
Overall if you want a steamy, best friend's brother, only one bed romance book, look no further!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of the ebook through NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. This book was published in mid-November so it should definitely be available at your local bookstore or library! My review is shared to Goodreads, Amazon and Instagram.
This book has it all. My fave trope included is the secret identity and it is done so well. You truly understand his reasons for keeping it a secret. Plot Twist also has serious topics it deals with and does it wth compassion and sensitivity. The chemistry between Sophie and Dash is hot and irresistible. This was a great read and I'll be looking for more books form La Rosa.
