This was a fun story. I really liked Dash and Sophie and following their arc - they’re both smart and funny and a little quirky. The book started strong from me, felt a bit stretched towards the half, and then the last fourth seemed condensed. Or maybe I just wanted more of the depth and story found in the last fourth. Regardless, I enjoyed it and found myself rooting for the MCs to get themselves together (in the best of ways) and out of their own way.
My favorite part, of course, is Richard. 😉
I received an ARC courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley. The opinions are mine alone.
Love! Great character development. THIS is why you need good character arcs to make a book great. They were so cute together, but the moment they got together felt...off.
This book was pretty cute! I went into this just hoping for a good time and it delivered!
This book is spicier than I expected and it was well written. I like how it tackled deeper subjects like Dash’s alcoholism, Nina’s difficulty having children, etc. but still left room for a cute romance.
This book is by no means perfect. The total misunderstanding of TikTok as a platform was difficult to read, and Sophie grated on me quite a bit. I also wish we got to see more of Poppy throughout because a good bit of the plot centered around Dash being the “best friend’s brother” archetype but we didn’t meet the best friend early enough to make me care about her feelings. It was a poor motivator for Sophie to initially reject Dash as a result.
My issues with it kept it from getting the coveted five star rating but it was still a cute and fun book worth reading.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review!
Sophie is a writer who can't write, and Dash is Hollywood royalty who wants nothing to do with the spotlight. Sophie's also best friends with Dash's sister, so he's totally off-limits. Totally. Right? Wrong. The pair makes a deal to help one another with their current problems, and as they spend time together, there's an undeniable chemistry between them that becomes difficult to ignore. There's only one problem — actually, there are several — but the MAIN one is that Dash wants to focus on his sobriety and not get into a relationship, while Sophie is singularly focused on falling in love. Naturally, they agree to a friends-with-benefits situation, because hey, we're all human and make terrible life choices that we know aren't in our best interests. So buckle up and enjoy the ride!
This was exactly what I wanted it to be: uncomplicated, sweet, full of sexual tension, and easy to read. Is it earth-shattering? No, but it works really well. I found the early bits about BookTok, how to social media, and the exhaustive listing of various tropes to be kind of annoying, but readers outside the sphere of bookish social media might find that stuff interesting and helpful to their understanding. The pace was quick and steady throughout, which I always appreciate in a romance. And usually I find the smutty bits off-putting, but Sophie and Dash's encounters were honestly so REALISTIC and not over-the-top — no gymnast positions, cringy pet names, or porno-level dirty talk — that I rather enjoyed them.
Some plot points here were predictable (but that's romance for you, really) but I think they were handled extremely well and again, realistically. Pick this one up if you need a satisfying romance with a little FWB, forced proximity, and off limits action. Thank you to Erin La Rosa, Canary Street Press, and NetGalley for my advance digital copy!
Thank you to the publisher and NG for a free e-arc copy for review. All opinions are my own.
Plot Twist is a cute read and I am glad I was given the opportunity to read it before its release date!
No third act breakup, communication between the two, safe sex, therapy, learning about themselves and one another, all great things.
I did find some of it was a bit corny and that the ending went too fast compared to the rest of the story. They also mentioned a character near the ending who I am not 100% sure who it was, so that was a thing. Might be on me honestly.
Overall, a fun romance but definitely not a fave. I still suggest giving it a chance if you're intrigued enough!
Really enjoyed Sophie and Dash’s story! I’m not a big fan of social media playing a role in stories but I think the author did a good job at not overwhelming readers when it came to TikTok. I’m a sucker for a friends to lover trope and watching Dash and Sophie’s story evolve into more was really sweet. Also loved the Nina cameo! This book also deals with heavy topics such as addictions and family struggles, and I think the author did a good job being sensitive to those topics!
Thank you NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for the eARC!
*As Always* Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for sending me an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The story follows Sophie and Dash. Sophie is an author, who is suffering from a writer’s block. Dash is Sophie's best friend's brother. He lives alone working on this crafting skills. Sophie and Dash start working together, becoming friends but there relationship slowly turns into something more as they get to know each other. This is a really fast paced read! This is a solid romance for any season too! I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves reading rom-coms! The setting is very cozy and relatable!
I really enjoyed this book! The spicyness was on point and I liked how it discussed themes of alcoholism and didn't shy away from how it can affect interpersonal relationships.
Unfortunately, this title was not for me. I think the writing is great, and the plot overall was good. The inclusion of different characters, LGBTQ individuals and disabilities/recovery was nice. But this was very tropey, the inclusion of TikTok turned me off (as an Avid poster, it just didn’t click well imo) and the cheating trope really turned me off.
Plot Twist was such a quick and fun read! I zoomed through this book in two sittings. I loved the characters and the plot of the story. Buuuuuut- I can’t say that this has been my favorite book or is in the top ten. I think the way the story starts out makes sense, but it quickly sidetracks to another story. There were also times that I was confused as to how the MC’s ended up in some situations. I wanted more in regards to natural scene/mood changes. It all felt a little… forced and rushed at times. But I will say this was lessened with the dual POV’s because without that I would have been even more lost. Overall, a great (spicy) romance. Just not my absolute favorite atm. #NetGalley #NetGalleyARC #ARC #PlotTwist #Romance
What a sweet, sexy charmer this book is! I love it when the central pairing of a romance novel features people who each need to heal some fundamental part of themselves and are able to find that healing in each other, and Plot Twist delivers that in spades. Lovely main characters, reasonably good side characters, believable conflicts, a villain definitely worth hating... can't wait to read more from this author!
I had this on my wishlist after reading For Butter or Worse. I was so excited to receive an advanced copy. This book did not disappoint. Both Sophie and Dash had a lot in common with hang ups from their pasts. Having each other as a sounding board really created a strong connection. There was a lot of wit in this book that I loved but a lot of impactful truths. “Love is a word, but more importantly, love is an action” I really enjoyed this book, I look forward to more! Very clever with the em dash !
I like this type of story, I like the characters, I love the cute cover, and I really wanted to like this book more. It's good, but I was ready to like it so much more than I really did...
As expected of a main character who is a writer, Sophie's got a block. She's almost at the end of her second book but she can't finish it. And of course that leads her into a crisis—she's never been in love. That's when her hunk of a neighbor, former movie star and her teenager days crush Dash, appears at her doorstep. Dash also needs to confront his ghosts, and as they become closer, they help each other get over the adversities.
I think my first disappointment was the twist on the "getting closer to a movie actor" trope. Although Sophie does say she's always had a crush on Dash, I don't see it in the story. I do believe she had a crush on him as an actor (I kept imagining Devon Sawa, by the way), but I don't think she identifies her neighbor (who is also her best friend's brother) as the same person. After all, Dash has changed a lot, leaving that heartthrob persona behind, and Sophie sees and reacts to that. Good for them. That's perfect. But not interesting for a story.
And the book continues to ignore all the paths that would have had me excited for. Which made the read not only drag for me but feel lacking. I recognize it is my fault. I do know many people will enjoy the path it takes, it's much more real than the summary could have suggested, even if we're talking about characters that are at least surrounded by fame (Sophie's friend is from a famous family, her sister is famous, she's gone viral on TikTok).
The characters and their relationships are great though. Amidst all things torn that are happening, they're so healthy, so aspiring, it was an unexpectedly healthy read. It's very healing. So don't miss this book if you're looking for super cute romance.
(By the way, this is part of a series, and though they mention the first book a lot, I didn't read it and I didn't feel like I was missing anything because of that, so it does work as a standalone!)
Honest review based on an ARC provided by Netgalley. Many thanks to the publisher for this opportunity.
This was super cute. Not sure how I felt about the meetings with all the exs. Not sure if that really added to the story.
I really enjoyed this book! It hit some of the hard stuff without being over the top and the chemistry between the characters was sizzling! There's just the right amout if spice and the storyline is ok with the bffs brother situation that's happening. The mother is absolutely unbelievable un this entire story. I wanted to throttle her! Very good writing as well, not just with the storytelling but grammatically as well.
So the synopsis sounds cute and I didn’t hate it overall but some of the real world references were just so cringey I couldn’t bring myself to look past them.
The characters felt pretty flat and the storyline felt really overly dramatic. I wanted to love it but it just didn’t grab my attention at all.
I really loved this book! The writing was really clever and touching. I found myself rooting so hard for Sophie and Dash, especially once they realized they had deep feelings for each other.
To start, this took me a long time to finish. I wasn’t motivated to read it at all. It’s not that it was a bad book, it just wasn’t that interesting to me. The characters didn’t seem to have that much depth to them and I felt like the plot was lacking. So much more could’ve been done with this. I also thought that the sex scenes were cheesy.
The one thing that I did like about the book was that Dash and Sophie talked about their feelings and there wasn’t some big miscommunication trope. They gave each other space and came back together. I didn’t feel annoyed with them ever for getting into some huge fight that was about a dumb little thing. So thank you to Erin La Rosa for not adding in a miscommunication trope.
Plot Twist is a fun, cute read! Dash and Sophie are charming and delightful together and as individuals. And the spicy scenes were spicy so be warned! Fans of For Butter or Worse will enjoy this one!
Plot Twist is everything you want in a romance and more! It's cute, sweet, steamy, and fun! This is the perfect fast read, romance, that is the perfect pick-me-up!
