Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I didn't end up finishing this novel, unfortunately. I was intrigued by the synopsis which sets the stage for a tale about an author struggling with writer's block and her landlord who is in need of a writing-related favour. This premise is the main reason I requested the book. However, I was not prepared for the celebrity culture which makes up the setting for this story. That's not a context I find relatable or interesting personally. It's not particularly overbearing and generally is well written. The hook simply didn't work for me. So, rather than keep going with a book I suspect will not land for me, I'm moving on.

(I normally do not rate books I have not finished but netGalley requires a start rating)

Thank you so much to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.

This was such a fun read! I really enjoyed it. It was a great palette cleanser from all the fantasy and I can't wait to read more of Erin's work!

I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book. It was so cute! It was somewhat of a slow burn. It gave lots of tingles and butterflies. I enjoyed the humor, although it did tend to get a little corny. This is a best friend's brother romance. This book focuses a lot on dealing with being a recovering alcoholic and toxic family dynamics. It was the right balance of cute and heartwarming, with some spice and character growth. I didn’t realize this was book 2 in a series but this book makes me want to check out the first. Our female main character is a writer, so there is a lot of meta-stuff going on in the plot as she’s simultaneously writing her romance book but her novel is not the biggest focus. Her struggles with writing her novel provide her with the motivation to grow as a character. The male main character has already been doing work on himself, but his struggle with alcoholism and resistance to asking for help and low self-esteem are the driving forces of his character growth throughout this book. I am a sucker for great characters and great character development so this book definitely did it for me.

I’ve never read anything by Erin La Rosa before, but the cover piqued my interest. This story has a great unique plot and the characters kept you coming back to see what happens next, but wasn’t a fast read that I couldn’t put down. There was just enough mystery between the main characters that you really didn’t know what was going to happen next. This was definitely an interesting book and might be enough for me to read more books by this author.

Plot twist is a cute and funny story about two characters struggling to find success. One facing alcoholism recovery and the other facing a complete loss of self. Helping and supporting each other these two form a friendship riddled with sexual tension. The book has subtle LGBTQ themes but with a primarily straight romantic focus. This story will make you laugh out loud while bringing to light important questions of masculinity, trust, and self exploration.

I read this without having read the first book but it almost felt like a stand alone, so I wasn't too lost, which I really liked. I enjoyed the characters and the touch on addiction. The whole thing was enjoyable. Would def recommend.

I told myself so many times to read book 1 before reading this, but I plum forgot and got sucked in anyways haha.
Sophie and Dash were cute! I was put off with them knowing each other for a while, Sophie being Dash’s sisters best friend, but there is no back connections or ties. It was bizarre. Maybe I missed them being friends later in life. And maybe Sophie crushes on him as a young indie actor when she was a teen but hadn’t met him yet? I feel like they knew each other and it’s never referred to any earlier than Sophie just renting from Dash. So that messsd me up.
Dash’s story and his struggle with addiction was so well done. I really loved it. The longer the book went with this man avoiding meetings, the more anxious I became, but Erin really tells a beautiful story about how those struggling with addiction can be anyone and how much more love they need because of their disease. It was really great. It was really rough to have Dash’s mom be the main villain in the novel. And I wanted more from his dad and older Brother. Also the female relationships felt very forced. Is Sophie really anyone’s friend? Sophie really kind of bothered me in this story. I felt I couldn’t relate to her and was more focused on Dash’s story. It was more compelling and I felt Sophie’s chapters dragged comparatively. I wanted to be equally invested in both characters. I will still probably read book 1 because I’m nosy and I think I will like Nina more!

this was so cute! i love rom-coms, they're my favorite romance sub-genre and this was no different. it was a beautiful mix of spice and cuteness that grabbed my attention and made me want to keep reading. i also love the fact that me and our main character, sophie, are both redheads, it makes me feel more connected!

I was so in the mood for a good grumpy v. sunshine book and Erin La Rosa hooked me with this one. The spice was delicious and we get all the tropes! But the one thing I didn’t love was all of the TikTok references.

Trigger warnings: alcoholism, rehab, and recovery

My patrons will absolutely eat this one up. I breezed through this book so quickly that I felt hungover after I was done. IT IS SO GOOD. I want to read it over and over again. I will definitely be looking into the Author's other books as well.

3.5-from the first chapter, i can usually tell when i'm going to enjoy something and when i'm not. that being said, this book was okay. i couldn't really find myself caring about the characters much, but that's on me. there was something almost inauthentic (?) about them. they just felt very one dimensional. i wasn't really a fan of sophie, dash was okay. i feel like it could have been so much more but it just fell a little flat for me. i would like to thank netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review.

This book had some of all the best tropes:
- best friend's brother
-childhood crush
- romance author

however, I think this also led to its disadvantages because often the story was tropey and it seemed disingenuous. It's like those books that have all the perfect tropes, but they don't weave into the story organically. This is a personal preference, but I dislike tiktok references or any real social media reference because it takes me out of the story, and this book had a lot. BUT their chemistry and the plot/character depth that happened later on the book definitely made up for it. It hits you emotionally as you reach the end, and the way the author dealt with the conflict of Dash's addiction felt just right and handled properly. It was steamy and yet absolutely adorable.

Thank you to Netgalley for this e-ARC.

A quirky, sexy romp that had me turning pages into the night. An ex-actor struggling with sobriety and a frazzled writer struggling to meet her deadline decide to help each other out, with sizzling results. Will definitely look for more from Erin de la Rosa.

A book about books. A novel about a novel. It's tricky to get perfect.
"Plot Twist" has some stumbles, but it stuck the landing.

Sophie is a romance writer suffering from the two most common associated afflictions: writer's block and hopeless romanticism.
With a dash of existential dread and the question of whether love exists for everyone else, I found Sophie to be very real. By no means perfect, She often said and did exactly the wrong thing in whatever situation she found herself in. She's childish, and she's reactionary. She's struggling.

Dash is a former indie child star who's trying to stay steady and struggling with his new-ish sobriety. This struggle is honestly one I've never come across in a rom-com novel and it was so well written. Dash is struggling too.

Together their chemistry was strong, their banter engaging and their conversations were moving.

But what I loved most about this novel is the way they were both trying and striving for better. Things didn't just patch themselves up at the end. The message that life is better as we try to just be our best selves and forgive ourselves for our past mistakes was so profoundly hopeful and precisely what I needed to read this month.

Don't get me wrong there were moments where characters behaved so nonsensically that I had to put the book down and walk away. But I was touched by the ending.

No one is perfect but we're here to love each other and try to do our best.

I was given a chance to read an arc this by Netgalley, Erin LA Rosa, and Harlequin Trade Publishing.

I was very into the beginning of this book. I thought I was really going to enjoy it but I hit a wall about 60-70% through the book where I felt it really lost steam. I enjoy a lot of the tropes in the book (ex, one bed) but I felt that the author put too many tropes in the book and had to rush to tie up all the loose ends of the book. Also, I understand the book was trying to be with the times using TikTok but it seemed unnecessary to reference it and use it so much.

Oh this was a good book. I mean GOOD. My heart felt so so full when realizing not only how good the writing was, but the building of the relationship (and how HEALTHY it was), the open communication over life drama, the TROPES, the inside jokes 😩

Things that I LOVED about this book:
🔸the one bed trope
🔹the best friend’s brother trope
🔸no third act breakup
🔹healthy communication
🔸the interactions with her exes (the “unfunny comedian” got me)

➖➖➖
Quote that made me laugh:

Dash felt inclined to say, “Don’t bring up tractors in front of Sophie. She has a Pavlovian response.” Sophie’s mouth quirked up in a smirk as she elbowed him. “Please don’t mention my kinks in front of company.”
➖➖➖

⁉️Honestly, if you are on the fence about reading this then I say go for it because it had a cute relationship, no third act breakup, no dumb miscommunication, and the writing was perfectly paced. READ IT.

📆The book’s published on November 14, 2023 so mark your calendars!!!

Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin for providing this ARC!

Plot Twist by Erin La Rosa

The chemistry and tension between Sophie and Dash made this a page turner just like the first book about Sophie’s sister, Nina.

The heavier topics discussed were done very tactfully; addiction, self sabotage, chronic illness, as well as other topics such as: love (regardless the gender), difficult family, and loss, were all explained wonderfully. As a standalone book, “Plot Twist” was overall well done, however I recommend reading the first book in the series: “For Butter or Worse” to have a better grasp on the story, and especially the characters.

The author always nails the banter in their books; the sweet and spiciness of this book is filled in with meaningful, heartfelt parts, and the interactions between Sophie and Dash are the cutest. They both go through self discovery which was very relatable, even the returning bonus characters are an amusing group; I was happy to see them sprinkled in the storyline again.

I loved Dash and Sophie’s story, and I highly recommend this fun, fast read. Thank you NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for a chance to read this. All reviews are my own, and I can’t wait to buy this in stores November 14th 2023; it’s the perfect heartwarming story for when the weather starts to become cold.

Tropes mentioned:
Addiction rep
Chronic illness rep
Dual pov
Falls for the landlord
One bed
Friends with benefits
Best friends brother
Ex movie star
Romance author
Pan sexual

I enjoyed the first book in this series so I had high hopes for this book and they were not met. The references where terrible and way to cliche. It’s overly tropey. To me it read as if someone had AI watch Booktok videos and then make something based off what was said. All the things people like with none of the plot, character development, or really any substance. Only finished this book so I could review it honestly and say I read every page.
