Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an E-Arc copy of this novel. A fun and cute romance novel.
Plot Twist was SUCH a good book. It had the perfect amount of spice, chaotic family, and best friends brother trope all wrapped up into one. The Sophie and Dash love story was super cute and I loved how it grew throughout the book.
I would recommend this to anyone.
A quirky, sexy romp that had me turning pages into the night. An ex-actor struggling with sobriety and a frazzled writer struggling to meet her deadline decide to help each other out, with sizzling results. Will definitely look for more from Erin de la Rosa.
Thank you to NetGalley & Harlequin for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Erin La Rosa is a new author to me, but I loved the cover and the premise sounded so promising. Unfortunately, I didn't love this one as much as I had hoped to.
I loved that Sophie & Dash were older protagonists, as someone in their thirties I liked that I was very close in age to them. I liked that their relationship was not perfect and they struggled, but I wanted more tension and chemistry between them. There were a lot of tropes in this, and it almost felt overbearing sometimes and made me lose interest.
Overall this was cute and had some spice, but it never truly hooked me.
This was a very enjoyable read. At first, based on the summary, I thought I had read it before. There have been other romances featuring an author suffering from writer’s block. However, Erin La Rosa put a fresh spin on this trope. I am in awe that this writer was able to make this book so fresh and engaging.
Sophie, the romance writer who has never been in love, attempts to figure out what is wrong with her love life by visiting exes. She is helped along the way by Dash, the brother of her best friend. In addition to the romance that develops between the two, there are several plot lines that were interesting. For example, Dash is a member of an acting dynasty family. The constant pressure and attention pushed Dash into alcoholism. And, the added benefit with having a writer as a main character is the emphasis on the writing process and grammar-related humor…my favorite being “rebel without a clause.”
I appreciate the opportunity to read this witty and wise novel. Thank you Netgalley for the ARC.
This is a wonderful, cohesive romance with unforgettable characters that actually focuses on the idea of love regardless of gender. Sophie is a romance author in her thirties that is struggling to write the end of her second book because she’s never been in love. Dash is a former actor turned artist with an anonymous TikTok account that allows him to show his work but also help him maintain his sobriety.
When Sophie is filmed in a bar saying she’s never been in love, she sets off to meet with her exes to see what went wrong and, hopefully, cure her writers block. Enter Dash, with his TikTok account. He helps Sophie with her TikTok videos about her exes and they grow closer. You can see the sparks between these two but Dash isn’t ready for the commitment of a relationship. Sophie then poses the idea of a friends with benefits situation and that’s where I stop because you have to read it to figure out the end.
The story gave off hallmark movie vibes in some parts but with more normal characters. This story also talks about some sensitive topics like mental health, dysfunctional families, and alcoholism. These issues didn’t take away from the story, but were incorporated into it and were the root of a few twists and turns in the story.
Overall, loved this story and the characters. I couldn’t put it down and read it in a few days.
Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy. This is my honest and voluntary review.
Really enjoyed this book and figured I would since the description was right up my alley! I really appreciated the main character being pansexual. I feel like we don't really see that too much in stories. I also appreciated that Dash's struggle with sobriety wasn't perfect and didn't have a super happy ending. Too many times books like to kind of make the struggle easier than it is - this one made it more real. Overall the comedy of this book was good and found myself chuckling at some parts and I really liked the characters. Definitely a fun read and one that was easy to finish in a day since I was so interested in the story.
Great cover right? Well, it started high and went low for me. The description sounded intriguing. A romance writer meeting a muse but the writing just fell flat for me. The pace was so slow without really any build on the characters to give this story momentum and cohesion.
Also, Dash was never a compelling character for me. His alcoholism and his lack of regard for others were too much to get invested in his character. Also, the crafter thing didn't work for me either.
The pluses, Sophie, the adorable dates, there was some steam, and the LA bookstores. But the ePUB sample font was not adjustable and difficult to read and stay with it.
I'm sorry this story fell flat for me. Dash never seemed desirable and I prefer stronger female heroines.
I would like to thank NetGalley, the publisher for the opportunity to read and review Plot Twist by Erin La Rosa.
This book did not work for me. Before I get to that, I do want to say that I was very intrigued by this book. I like the grumpy vs sunshine vibes, the exploration of different types of relationships, and that our MFC is a romance author.
That being said, I felt like the author had a very long list of things and tropes that she wanted in the book and tried very hard to squeeze everything in, which makes the plot a bit confusing and inconsistent. I kept being quite confused as I was reading. Why did they even go on a road trip together? Was it just to use the one-bed trope, because nothing else really happened? Why did her sister react in that way? Do they not have a good relationship? Wouldn't her sister know that things can be misconstrued in the media? Why is Dash leaving strange comments on her TikTok videos?
This one was just not for me.
The cover drew me in, but it was hard to keep going with this one. I was excited to read about this romance writer in a rut. Seemed like a light and fun trope. It was a light read that went fast if you are looking for a fun beach read this summer.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. However, I had trouble connecting with the characters and their stories.
I thought the little dates he took her on were just adorable. And the tension was good. But I felt like it was trying too hard to have main characters with trauma. It felt very forced.
I had trouble believing that the sister and the main character were best friends. Their relationship was very bland and forced.
With all that said, it was still an enjoyable read.
Thank you to Net Galley and Canary Street Press for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of Plot Twist by Erin La Rosa. Unfortunately, I didn't love this one like I did "For Butter or Worse", so I'm giving it a 3-star review because even though I didn't love it, it was still an enjoyable book. Sometimes the downfall of series books is I tend to compare them to each other which was probably the downfall with this one.
An aspect of this book I loved was Sophie being a romance author who has never been in love. I love when storylines include romance authors because I think it provides a fun glimpse into where I spend so much of my time - reading romance books. A big plus for me was seeing little glimpses into Nina's relationship throughout the book.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
This book was absolutely adorable and I couldn’t get enough of it.
Sophie is a romance novelist, but she’s never been in love and once a slightly embarrassing video of her surfaces on TikTok she comes up with a great idea to help with her writers block.
Does she end up finding love? Read it and find out. Trust me, it’s worth it. There are also some pretty steamy scenes 🥵
There’s even plot twists that weren’t anything I was expecting and it kept me on my toes. I find books that have that drama factor, just makes it that more interesting to read.
I think it’s cool how she mentions her first book in her second book and they’re characters in this world… her sister and sisters husband so I’m interested to see how that book will be.
Kudos to Erin because I loved this book! I can’t wait to read anymore books that she’ll write in the future.
Thank you to NetGalley, Harlequin Trade Publishing and Canary Street Press for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Overall, it was okay. A good beach read if you are looking for some spicier moments and modern drama.
I really wanted to love this book. It had a good enough plot idea - a romance writer who has never been in love meets with their exes to figure out what has gone wrong. A funny idea, and a great trope. However, the characters fell flat for me and I felt that there were some extra embellishments that didn’t really add a ton of value to the story. But maybe I feel that because I wasn’t fully bought in.
I would be interested in reading Poppy’s story though, so I will continue to follow the author!
Such a cute and dynamic story. It really explored the complexities of families and friendships who have gone through hard times and come out stronger. A little spicy but I would definitely recommend. I didn't realize it was the second in a series but totally not necessary to read the previous book to get the full experience.
Sophie needs to finish her manuscript or her publisher will yank her advance payment and she'll be at career stage zero all over again. Sure, she's wrote one bestseller, but as her deadline approaches she finds her own inability to love or acknowledge it altogether is keeping the 'happily ever after' locked behind writer's block.
Inspired by the confidence she gains from her hottie-former-teen-star-crush-neighbor-landlord, shes going to interview her past partners and work her way through what went wrong. Though, in some cases, breakups were the exact thing she needed. Its all part of what twists a plot together to make a life. Sophie has quite a bit of life to sort through to get to her own happy ending.
What 'Plot Twist' does best is give Sophie & Dash (see aforementioned hottie) time to themselves. They each have toxic relationships and stellar supportive friends that shape them on page as you go. I loved reading Sophie & her sister, and Dash & his sponsor. These individual moments for our couple contributed to the drama but also how they apply other social epiphanies to building a new relationship.
Can I give extra points for the name drop of several bucket list LA area bookstores? I can and I will. Have some points!
You'll love reading 'Plot Twist' for its journey. Sophie & Dash both find it hard to see happiness while they're hurting. But finding someone worthy of trust, and taking a chance can be the start of something they never expected to have - love.
Interesting story from Erin La Rosa. I enjoyed the characters and plot of Plot Twist but it missed the build of her last book. Dash’s and Sophie’s story was cute but felt like there were holes in the development of their relationship. I really liked the overall storyline, but wanted more realistic build. I do hope Poppy has a story to come! Alcoholism and family dysfunction were handled with care.
Such a sweet and cute read! I couldn't stop grinning! The main characters are easy to love and root for. I especially loved the vulnerable moments Sophie and Dash had in the book. Moments, where Sophie revisit her exes, were a little annoying and frustrating. I enjoyed how Sophie realized she wasn't the best partner in her past relationships. Sadly her exes would treat her horribly as she tries to make amends which kinda overshadowed the experience for me. Maybe it's my toxic trait to think Sophie could do no wrong.
I don't think the title matches the book well. There were no moments in the book that really surprised me that the title feels a little mismatched.
This is my second book by Erin La Rosa and I have enjoyed "Plot Twist" twice as much. I look forward to the author's future works.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Harlequin publishing and NetGalley. Thank you and the Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is the first book I read by this author. I was attracted by the cover of the book. It had everything I love in a romantic comedy; best friend's grumpy brother, neighbors, close proximity. I loved the premise of the novel and the characters. I loved how realistic and relatable the main characters' are individually, especially the struggle with alcoholism, or finding love. However, I felt there was no relationship connection between the 2 main characters, that "spark".
Overall, I would still definitely recommend this book. It was still a cute fun read.
I enjoyed this sweet and sexy romance, which included hints of necessary angst and tackled sensitive subjects such as alcoholism and dysfunctional family relationships, just as much as the author's previous book. The forced proximity and friends-to-lovers tropes were also well-executed.
The main heroine, Sophie Lyon, is a romance writer suffering from writer's block with only six weeks left to finish her new book for her contract. Her lack of love life has killed her passion, so she decides to face her past by meeting with her exes to understand what went wrong in her relationships. She plans to document her meetings on social media, which helps her become a TikTok sensation.
Her landlord, Dash Montrose, who was once a teen heartthrob, offers to help her during her romance journey. This plan may also benefit Dash, who has long fought with alcoholism. Coming from Hollywood royalty, he intends to stay out of scandals, but he can't help being attracted to Sophie, leading them to become friends with benefits. Their chemistry is palpable, but they both like each other more than they can admit. Sophie has never fallen for someone before and is confused about her feelings, while Dash deals with heavier issues and feels he's not good enough for her. Can they fight against their insecurities to ride into the sunset for their HEA?
The cover is dreamy, and the love story is appealing. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more Erin La Rosa romances in the near future.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for sharing this digital reviewer copy with me in exchange for my honest thoughts.
