Wow. THAT ENDING. I don’t even know how to feel right now.
The amount of angst and romantic tension in this book is unmatched. I love a good pining moment, and it’s definitely delivered in this book. The pacing is very fast. A lot of things happen in the span of this book, and the chapters are pretty short. So you really just fly through.
Meren is really continuing to come into her own, while Reven struggles with the darkness in him. Throughout the book, they kind of go on their own journeys while staying in close proximity, which I thought was really unique. Although I do really love their romance, so I was just begging for some romantic action.
There’s a great cast of characters, and the storyline is fun. There is a HUGE cliffhanger through, so read at your own risk. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
This is a good follow-up to The Liar's Crown. Middle books aren't always the best so no judgement there.
I'm sure this will get a lot of great reviews from its intended audience. However, this isn't for me. I read the first book leading up to this ARC, but I wasn't a huge fan already and this series just feels like suffering.
Also I hate smut in books for teens. This book definitely deserves an R rating as a heads up.
However, if you liked ACOMAF or These Hollow Vows by Lexi Ryan, then these books are probably going to be a home run for you.
Thank you to Netgalley and Entangled Teen for the ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thank you, thank you NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for granting me an advance copy of this Fantastic book in return for my honest opinions.
Having read book one, I was super, super excited to be granted an advance copy of book two! The cover is stunning and I have ordered my own hard copy!
The book built off of book one and I just loved ever minute of it! Meren is one of my most favorite characters. I just can't wait to read the next book in the series!
The plot and story line just keep getting better and better!
Highly, highly recommend!
This was kind of a letdown compared to The Liar's Crown which saddened me since I greatly was looking forward to continuing Meren and Tabra's journeys. I didn't like how The Stolen Throne started since the reader thinks it picks up right where The Liar's Crown ended, but instead it's months later. Reven and Cane immediately rescue Meren from the palace and besides Meren reminiscing about how awful living in the palace was, we don't know anything else about it. I was also confused on why it took months to rescue Meren when the process was extremely easy.
I wasn't a fan of Reven's whiplash regarding his feelings for Meren. Before he rescues her, all he thinks about is Meren and how much he loves her. Once she is rescued, he immediately puts up walls and tells Meren he can't be with her in order to protect her from himself. This excuse has been overused in so many teen books, but I was relieved that Meren didn't fall apart at the news. She was sad, but she knew she had a kingdom to save and so she plowed forward. I was also thankful that the one-sided love triangle stayed that way from beginning to end. Cane expressed his feelings for Meren, but she remained loyal to Reven even though Reven was hot and cold.
Despite the lack of suspense compared to The Liar's Crown (in my opinion), I look forward to reading the next book to see how the trilogy ends. Thank you NetGalley for an ARC.
3 stars mostly bc this book suffers from the SJM phenomenon of putting two ppl together, bonding them, calling them mates, etc. Reven and Meren aren't the heart of this story for me. So that we spend 75% of the time in her head with her wanting him, needing him, him falling apart anytime she's not near, is exceedingly tiring. Yes she's 19. Yes she's not had her own life for that amount of time. But goodness, get your head in the game. His iron silk velvet voice and sexy walk is not worth all these pages. Ok rant over.
More history and mythology is in this book and I'll grant that towards the end we get a little more about this thing between these two. And this ragtag group doesn't win all the time (obvs there's a new book coming) and I think Tabra will be key in the coming book even though very sidelined here.
The first book in the series was great and this DOES answer alot of questions while raising more. So I'll definitely be looking forward to the next but this suffered a bit from second book syndrome. I still recommend it.
This beautiful YA Fantasy series has such vivid and rich world building, well-developed characters, and a fast-paced plot. Stand-in-Queen Meren is so fierce and strong here, it's delightful to follow along on her adventures. We learn even more about the world's history and how powers came to be. We learn more about Meren and Tabra's line of Queens and their abilities. Highly recommended!
Interesting take on some typical fantasy modern tales, engaging characters and plot. A great sequel and I look forward to the third book.
Thank you for the ARC!
"You're mine, Mereneith Evangeline.Written in the stars to be mine"
The second book in the Dominions series thankfully doesn't suffer the dreaded second book syndrome, while it's a teeny bit different than my expectations after the smashing first book, I still think the book delivered overall. The world building is just as beautiful as it was in the first book, in fact more expansive in this one with introduction of new characters and layering with more tales from Dominions past. This probably was my favorite part in the book, it felt like reading a story within the story and I love how it was connected to the current events
The plot picks up right where it was left off and launches into rescuing Meren from you know who's place, it led to interesting tension between Cain and Reven which was funny. The stakes are even higher in this book and there is no time to waste, the plot involves a lot of traveling which was super fun to read with all the lush details Abigail Owen had penned down. The plot is packed with some revelations, fierce action and some twists that I really enjoyed and in the usual fashion of the first book , this one also ends on a high note that had me immediately look up the release date of third book lol
That being said, the reason why I said it fell a little below my expectations is because character development and the romance factor, I absolutely loved the little found family trope going on and Pella had grown on me so much that I really enjoyed her's and Hakkan's hint of a side plot. However, I really felt Tabra's character was underwhelming as she barely has anything to do, and Reven's character development was all over the place as he felt considerably different from how he was in book 1 which to be honest was a disappointment because I felt like Cain outshined him a tad bit through out. The dragged out push and pull between Reven and Meren did not help either, after having a sizzling chemistry in book 1, they barely have time together until 70% mark and then it changes so abruptly that I had hard time enjoying the romance sequence
Overall, I enjoyed the sequel and definitely looking to the finale. Thanks to the publisher for my digital ARC
Ah, I’m so bummed. I LOVED book 1, but sadly, this one was a DNF for me. The tone felt vastly different than book 1 and read much more like a YA from the early 2010s. Between the drama and the random minor characters that kept getting thrown out without development, I struggled to get into the adventure and want to keep reading. I tried SO hard to like this, but sadly, just wasn’t for me.
I don’t want to discourage others from trying it out though. If you loved book 1, it may be perfect for you! If you weren’t super interested after book 1, you could probably skip the rest of the series.
I will continue to support this author because I think she’s very talented! This book just didn’t hit for me.
Wow! What a great sequel! I am obsessed with this world and the characters. Abigail does such a great job at writing such in appealing story that draws you in and makes you not want to put down the book. Meren is such a great protagonist and I loved seeing her personality grow more confident and strong. Add in a fun shapeshifting side kick and I was all in again lol. If you loved the first book you will absolutely love this one as well.
Thank you Netgalley, Entangled Teen and Riki Cleveland for inviting me and allowing me to read and review this title! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
"You have to do this. I hate that you have to do it, but it's who you are. Not because you were born to be a sacrifice but because that's your heart. I see you, Mereneith Evangeline."
There may be spoilers ahead!
Alright Abigail Owen and Entangled Teen. imma need book 3 ASAP after what you both put me through especially after those last few chapters!
The Stolen Throne is an exciting and enthralling read. I was addicted to finding out what would come next for these ever-developing characters. I love Meren and how fierce she is. Her flaws, her sense of loyalty, and the way she handles tough situations are relatable and inspiring. I adore her and Reven together. They are one of my new favorite YA book couples and, while I kind of predicted what would happen at the end of The Stolen Throne, I'm crossing my fingers for, if not entirely happy, a little bit of a bittersweet ending for them in book 3.
The tiny nitpicks I have are there were some moments that felt a little long and others I wish were not so rushed. I wish there were more scenes of Reven and Meren being together. For most of the book Reven distanced himself from Meren due to not being able to fully control his shadows. He wanted to make sure he didn't hurt her and he wanted to protect her from himself so by doing that they had a limited amount of sweet moments. I do wish they had more time together so their romantic development didn't feel so rushed during that one chapter towards the end. You know the one...
Many sequels in a trilogy series tend to feel like filler but The Stolen Throne never felt that way. The characters were constantly in motion and there was a lot of action and revelations. There is a plot twist or two I wasn't expecting and a couple I figured out a few chapters in. I greatly enjoyed reading from Meren's point of view but I do wish we had one or two more of Reven's.
I highly recommend continuing this series, you won't be disappointed.
4.75 stars
Safe to say that i loved and devoured The Liar's Crown in one breath.
The Stolen Throne is the second book from the Dominions trilogy by Abigail Owen, and it's more addictive, thrilling and emotional from the first!
The story continues right where we left, gasping in surprise and heartache in the final chapter of The Liar's Crown.
It wasn't easy for our beloved Shadowraith to steal the queen….and ironically, now he has to do it again…but with much higher stakes at play because he has to save the girl he fell in love with.
All of our beloved characters from book 1 are in full swing, and together they have to find a way to save Meren from Eidolon's grasp, find out what is happening to her sister Tabra, keep an eye on Reven and his shadows that are growing more violent by the day….and the cherry on top they have to find a way to defeat Eidolon and save not only their kingdom but all others too.
So many dangerous adventures, new allies and wonderful twist and turns you won't see coming.
And I didn't know a heart can break and mend so many times in a span of a one book! The relationship between Reven and Meren is leaving breathing thing like his shadows that grips you by the heart and doesn't let go during the whole ride!
I'm counting the days, no the hours until the release of the third book, The Shadows Rule All, so I can dive back into this breathtaking story again!
Meren was forced to take her sister's place in order to protect her, now she is still pretending to be queen in order to keep her safe.
I usually feel like the second book in a three-part series can feel like filler, but that wasn’t the case here. Although it had a slow start, this picked up about halfway through and added enough to the plot that it kept me engaged and wanting to know more. Although I’m loving the world-building and action, I’m having a harder time with the romance aspect. I love a morally grey character as much as the next person, but Raven’s constant hot/cold attitude was getting annoying. The romance scenes kept giving me whiplash with how quickly their relationship kept changing. I’m excited to see how this story ends in The Shadows Rule All.
Also, I just want to say how pretty these covers are! From what I can tell, it looks like embroidery and I love that. I wish I had a physical copy because I’m sure it is stunning in person.
Very big thanks to Entangled Publishing for granting me the experience of reading The Stolen Throne ARC! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Whereas I was expecting the second book in the series to be a filler book - to build on what's happened in the first of the series, leading to a banger of an end to the series - this was not the case! I even think I might like this book better than the first in the series, with the continuous action and all the emotions I've felt throughout the book. I simply can't get over Meren and Reven and DEFINITELY hope to get more of them in the third and last book. Can't wait!
Wow. That's what I've got. Wow.
No sophomore slump for this series. The Stolen Throne picks up where The Liar’s Crown leaves off, expanding the world and cast of characters we met in book 1.
Reven continues to fight the Shadows inside of him, and while I'll admit that sometimes I had to re-read portions of the text when shadows were being talked about, it was a very clever device to further blur the lines between good and evil. I enjoyed seeing Meren come into her power and Reven's struggle with the Shadows creates that will they/won't they angst. I had hoped for a little more from a couple of the characters, but I'm hopeful for one of them at least in the last book, The Shadows Rule All , which comes out in January of 2024 and which I'm also very eager for. Who knew that I would be wishing for January when we are just starting to warm up with spring temps? Abigail Owen....that's who.
I already ordered my physical copy of The Liar's Crown, and I'm eager to get my final copy of this one as well. This series is getting a permanent place on my shelves.
I have been anxiously awaiting this book ever since I finished the first. I’ve really enjoyed this series and with that ending I am now looking forward to the next book. It can’t get here soon enough, we need more Reven & Meren 🥰.
It was face paced, exciting, and made me fall even more in love with these characters and this magical world.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for sending me a copy. All opinions expressed are my own.
The Stolen Throne is a can't-put-down, need-to-read-all-night sequel to The Liar's Crown. It is a perfect second book in a series, and I say this knowing that great middle books often end on gut-wrenching cliffhangers (spoiler alert, this one does just that). The Stolen Throne picks up where The Liar's Crown left off, with Meren in the hands of Eidolon and Reven and Tabra healing with Cain's family. The book is action-packed, fast-paced, and quite exciting. Outside of the action, the author spends considerable time further developing characters' relationships, including the sister relationship between Meren and Tabra, the love triangle that has formed, and the many friendships between groups. I really enjoy reading as Meren matures and comes to realize her own worth and value. She is a fantastic POV. In addition to the looming threat of Eidolon, the group finds that there is a traitor among their midst. Once again, it's a very gripping read. Easy five stars!
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book, provided by Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I am not okay after finishing this book. That ending was rough, and I need the third book yesterday. The world building in this series in phenomenal, but my heart is hooked on the love story of Meren and Reven. For the majority of the book, Reven tries to stay away from Meren, thinking they are better off apart as he tries to protect her, but that is just not true. They are 100% MFEO, and his defenses finally crumble so they can be together.
Owen's attention to detail and her flair for description makes you feel as if you are in the story with Meren and Reven. The world is lush and epic, the characters have depth. Meren is so committed to finding and saving her sister that she will go to any length - but is she a match for the immortal king Eidolon? While she's been thrown into this surreal quest, Meren must deal with a hot-and-cold Reven, an overbearing zariphate who wants her to marry her best friend, said best friend's mean girl sister and a traitor amongst those Meren thinks she can trust.
This installment is fast-paced and action-packed as Meren and her merry band of cohorts set out to destroy king Eidolon, freeing not only his people and Reven, but Meren and Tabra, and their lineage, as well. We meet new characters, appreciate the old characters and just plain wanna roll our eyes at some characters haha!
My heart did a little happy dance as the relationship between Meren and Reven finally built to bursting in this middle story, and I can't wait to see how it ends.
*This is my honest and voluntary review. Thanks so much to the publisher and Netgalley for this ebook.*
If I liked The Liar's Crown, I fell in love with The Stolen Throne.
ᅠ
The second book in this trilogy follows the rhythm of the first, action at all times, and the fact is that the plot does not stop, when you think the characters have a break in a chapter, something happens that starts them up again. I really love that in books, it makes you want to keep reading all the time.
ᅠ
The story continues, but Meren and Reven don't get a moment's rest. They must find a way to end the threat posed by Eidolon, and after learning about the enemy's plan, they need allies to stop it. It's not enough that they know what Eidolon wants, they need to stay one step ahead.
ᅠ
Meren and Reven are still my favorite characters. I have suffered a lot for both of them, although they have had their moments of happiness, their love story is destined to be difficult from the beginning, and that makes them cherish those little moments even more. In this book, the characters from The Liar's Crown are joined by new characters. Each one with their power or special ability, and their place in the group. But I want to highlight the evolution of Meren, despite continuing to think that Tabra is the true queen of Aryd, she does not hesitate to take her place when necessary to the point that she earns the trust of those around her.
ᅠ
Abigail has surprised me, because in my opinion, The Stolen Throne definitely beats the first book and it was difficult. And that ending has left me stunned. I'm looking forward to 2024 so I can enjoy the last book in this series.
ᅠ
I highly recommend this series full of action, fantasy, romance, loyalty and betrayal. It has fascinated me.
Meren is posing as her sister, the Queen of Aryd and wife of the merciless villain King Eidolon after the explosive events at the end of The Lair's Crown. Compared to the previous book, this one is much more action packed fantasy than slow burn romance, but it still left just as much of an impact. Brilliant world building and strong characters, this a series I absolutely adore!
