Cassie needs a place to stay as she’s about to be evicted for late/non-payment from her current apartment. She’s been struggling to make ends meet as an artist, working two jobs to get by when an advertisement for a room pops up sounding too good to be true.
The apartment is gorgeous, as is her roommate/landlord, but he’s a bit odd, but Cassie’s out of options and Fredrick seems harmless. That is until she finds his stash of blood in the fridge! Once the shock wears off, Fredrick has a proposition for Cassie: stay and help him navigate the 21st century.
I had a good time with this fish-out-of-water kind of story, with Frederick trying to figure out and fit into modern society after being out of it for a hundred years. Falling in love wasn’t part of the plan but Cassie and Frederick fall bit by bit over notes, text messages, and experimental outings.
My Roommate is a Vampire was a cute, lighthearted romance that cracked me up and made me smile! Plus, gotta love a book that pays homage to Buffy the Vampire Slayer!
After reading a book I didn’t really enjoy, this book was definitely the best thing that could have happened to me. I giggled so much reading this, it really lifted up my spirits.
It’s the right kind of quirky and silly that exactly fits my type of humour. Plus, falling in love through letter writing is MY trope. I eat that up like Girl Dinner.
If you ever watched the show Sleepy Hollow and loved watching Ichabod bumble about trying to understand the modern world, then this book is for you. Just picture that, but more humourous and less terrifying.
If you’re looking for a light read that’s entertaining and a bit goofy with precious moments and laugh-out-loud scenarios, you’ll want to pick this up this spooky season.

It didn’t matter that he wore a perfectly tailored three-piece suit, the charcoal-grey jacket and starched white shirt clinging to those broad shoulders like they were made specifically for his body, or that his matching grey slacks fit him just as well. None of this mattered, because this was someone with a room I maybe wanted to rent. Nothing more.
When I tell you that My Roommate is a Vampire is full of fun, campy paranormal vibes, laugh out loud characters, and a romance that is both wholesome and delivers on every single bit of swoon that was promised: there are no lies detected here. Jenna Levine has delivered a book that I guarantee you will love.
My Roommate is a Vampire is a modern-day Kate & Leopold with a paranormal twist. Cassie is a down on her luck artist. It’s hard to live in Chicago and make a living wage in the arts. When she stumbles on a “for rent” ad online, she thinks it’s too good to be true. Lo and behold, Frederick answers the door. Eccentric is a kind word to use for what Cassie discovers in his apartment, but for a Vampire, he takes it all in stride. After all, Frederick has got a secret to keep.
“Over the past two weeks I’ve discovered that in this city of millions, you are one of a kind.” His words carried a quiet intensity I could feel in the pit of my stomach.
With Cassie working during the day and Fredericks inexplicable nighttime habits, their communication comes down to notes and text messages, which are just as charming as their few and far between in-person interactions. That is until, Cassie finds out precisely why Frederick is so secretive. Although once Cassie finds out what Frederick is, he enlists her to help him blend into modern day Chicago, and who wouldn’t want to play dress up with Vampire Ken?
There is something about Frederick being so earnest in trying to adapt to the modern world that completely charmed me. His utter intolerance to be beholden to Reginald brought me endless giggles while reading. While My Roommate is a Vampire is definitely tongue in cheek, I just truly admired the overall romance between Frederick and Cassie. From their budding friendship to their admiration of each other to that final acceptance of what has been growing between them is truly delicious in a very unique way.
I smiled a little at the idea of Frederick threatening anyone at all. He might be an undead creature of the night—but as undead creatures of the night went, he was a marshmallow.
The hijinks of the paranormal side of the story are every bit of a rollercoaster of emotions. Frederick’s predicament and drama with his family and their very traditional views causes him a seemingly endless amount of annoyance, but in contrast, it’s his dedication to Cassie’s goodness that truly won me over.
I cannot stop thinking about My Roommate is a Vampire. I adored these characters. For building a new world, incorporating paranormal elements, and even having a bit of a thrill thrown in, this hit all the sweet spots in a truly unforgettable romance. I guarantee you will want to clear your to-do list to read this one! Congrats to Jenna Levine on a fangtastic new release!
This is one of the cutest vampire stories I've read! Cassie is desperate when she's been evicted to land an apartment she can actually pay for. What she doesnt realize is that her new roommate has a forbidden room, only sleeps at night, and never seems to eat. As an artist, Cassie is in tune with her surroundings and as time stretches she quickly realizes there's something very different about her hot roommate, Frederick. He is the worst at covering his tracks and is stuck in centuries old language and style. Cassie and Frederick form a quick bond while trying to get him up to speed into this century. It's fun, sexy, and has a great plot.
This book was so fun, and perfect if you're like me and are excited for spooky season, but want to read something that is not TOO spooky! The chemistry and tension between the two main characters was fantastic.
POV: Single FMC
Spice: 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️
Funny and cute are the only kind of vampire books that I want to read from here on out! I haven't read a vampire book in a really long time, but I'm so glad that this one was my re-introduction to this genre.
I really appreciated how both Frederick and Cassie are in their 30's, or at least "appear" to be, in Frederick's case, so they make mostly mature decisions. There are some details that are skipped over, such as Frederick's life 300 years ago and how he became a vampire, but I understand how it helps to keep the story lighter. Although it is technically only told from Cassie's POV, we do get little peeks of what is going on in Frederick's head with his text messages and letters. Frederick is very sweet, but has a possessive side and l absolutely loved his Darcy-esque fist clenching. There is only one open door spicy scene, so although you can feel the tension between these two, it is on the sweeter side.
You can't help but root for Cassie and cheer her on as she figures things out for herself, with the help of Frederick There are some fun side characters, and I have to say that Frederick's vampire friend Reginald definitely deserves to have his own story told because he is something else! It’s not very often I can say I'm reading a book with a 200+ year age gap, but this one is a feel good read I didn't want to put down!
My Roommate Is A Vampire is a really cute rom-com with a supernatural beings woven throughout the book. If you love a good rom-com but don't usually like fantasy, this is the book for you. You will love premise of this novel, just a vampire looking for someone to teach him the ways of the 21st century; expecting to fall for his human roommate and teacher. This is a must read.
(4.5 stars rounded up to a 5)
My Roommate is a Vampire by Jenna Levine is a charming debut paranormal romantic comedy.
Cassie is the epitome of a starving artist with an MFA. Her best friend shows her a too-good-to-be-true Craigslist ad for an apartment in Chicago, but she's sure there's a catch. And her new roommate Frederick is pretty weird: he sleeps all day, is out all night, and walks and talks like the characters in the regency romance novels he seems to enjoy. And then Cassie finds bags of blood in the fridge...
This was a breath of fresh air and I had such a blast reading it. It was my kind of goofy and I lost count how many times I laughed out loud. It's been a while since I've read a true rom-com, which was great. The end has a set-up for a second book, and I'm very excited to read further into this world.
Some of the vampire lore here is stuff that I've heard before, but there were a few new and cute things thrown in. Frederick gives off big Darcy vibes, and I'm always here for that.
I also really liked the epistolary segments at the beginnings of chapters. They're always a bit different, but feature text message exchanges, letters and notes, journal entries, and selections from books. I'm a big epistolary girlie, so I get very excited when that feature is included in a book.
The end felt like it was wrapped up too quickly; I would have absolutely read more from this story. The third act breakup was also resolved a bit fast for my taste. I wish we would have gotten some of Frederick's POV in here as well, that would have really provided depth to the book in general.
If you're looking for something fun and lighthearted, especially for spooky season this fall, this is a great book to pick up!
Tropes in this book include: cinnamon roll hero, epistolary, slow burn, age gap, forced proximity, opposites attract
CW: blood, abduction

What to expect:
💘 Insta Attraction
❤️🔥 Slow Burn
💛 Friends to Lovers
🎂 Age Gap
Quick thoughts:
✨ Loved the slow burn.
✨ Cinnamon roll MMC.
✨ It gets spicy.
✨ Quick read.
Overall thoughts:
Cassie’s life isn’t going how she planned. Evicted from her apartment, she’s at her wits end until she comes across a Craigslist add for a roommate at an unbelievable rate. Taking a chance Cassie agrees to the arrangement.
Frederick isn’t your normal roommate. Spending the last century in a coma, he has a lot to learn about the modern world. Hoping his new roommate, Cassie, can teach him about the world he ends up getting more than he bargained for.
Instantly attracted to one another, Cassie and Frederick must navigate their feelings and deal with secrets that come to light.
I loved this cute, quirky story. Cassie was a great FMC. She struggled yet kept a positive attitude. Frederick was a cinnamon roll MMC. He was so respectful and sweet it’d be hard not to love him.
The slow burn was the perfect pace. Their relationship was executed so well. They had their moments of not being on the same page but they were resolved quickly. The spiciness builds throughout and culminates in one scene.
Surprisingly the vampire aspect never felt out of place. The ending was a bit goofy but it fit well with the story overall. If you like vampire romances then give this light, quick read a try!
Lemme tell you, this is just the perfect amount of cheese. It's so cute.
I saw someone call this Reylo fanfic but I instantly thought of Tom Hiddleston in Crimson Peak over Adam Driver.
This is for the girlies that love the 2005 Pride & Prejudice and Twilight.
Thank you so much to Berkley Publishing for an early copy of My Roommate is a Vampire by Jenna Levine. This romance is a lot of fun to read.
Cassie needs a place to live and sees an ad in the paper for super cheap rent. Of course she's interested but she's also super suspicious because $200 for rent is unheard of in this economy. She moves in and that's when hijinks ensue. We know Frederick is a vampire but Cassie has no clue what's going on with her roommate other than he's kind of weird. The two do end up falling for each other and the truth comes out which Cassie takes pretty well (eventually).
The romance was not as interesting to me as was the wackiness that Cassie and Frederick went through before admitting their feelings to each other. I also freaking loved Frederick's friend and would love a book about him. Overall, this was just a fun story to read.
This is a cute roommate turned lovers romance with a twist. Frederick is an old world vampire that is amusing as he fumbles to fit into Cassie's modern life and learn her human ways. Cassie is surprised to learn her new roommate is a vampire, but the forced proximity eventually reveals a passionate chemistry between them. The audiobook is well done and was a joy to listen to.
Get your necks ready because vampire season is ready to take over with this newest offering from Jenna Levine.
My Roommate is a Vampire made me laugh, squeal, angry, and tear up which is a total rollercoaster of a ride.
Jenna Levine cleverly crafted this one and I won't accept any criticism period.
This was an extremely fun book! I loved the paranormal-ness (is that a word?) with Frederick being a vampire but it still being set in a very modern world. Frederick was an absolute cutie and the moments where Cassie was teaching him the ways of the modern world was funny. Plus I love a good "oh we need to kiss, you know to make sure you still know how to kiss".
The only thing about this book was I felt like Cassie and Frederick were better as friends. I did not feel any romantic chemistry between them at all for some reason. It just kind of jumped right into them being attracted to each other. I do think it would have been helpful to have more from Frederick's POV than the letters and text messages at the beginning of each chapter. I think that might have helped convinced me of the chemistry.
This is a good book to read in October to start to get you in the spooky mood! I recommend this one if you're looking for something fun, relatively light, and a quick read.
Tropes:
🧛🏼♂️ he’s a vampire

this was an interesting premise and read. I enjoyed seeing Frederick learn about what he’d missed in the last 100 years and try to figure things out. I think that it would
have benefited from being dual POV or just more insight into why he was so obsessed with Cassie because it felt too insta-lovey for me at times. It was nostalgic for the vampire fics I read as a teen so I enjoyed that aspect as well
Im going to be really honest with you, the title of this book made me unsure of what to expect...
Would it be corny?
Would it be laugh out loud funny?
Is this geared more toward a younger audience?
No.
Yes.
No.
My Roommate is a Vampire IS laugh out loud funny and will have you bellied over numerous times. It also has elements of true love that will have you begging to meet a "Frederick" for yourself...
Frederick is everyones perfect man, even if he is a vampire.
I really don't know what to tell you with this one, I absolutely loved it. I wasn't expecting it but gosh darn it, this might just be my favorite RomCom of the year!!!! I absolutely loved both Frederick and Cassie, and I know you will too!
Check out this teaser:
True love is at stake in this charming, debut romantic comedy.
Cassie Greenberg loves being an artist, but it’s a tough way to make a living. On the brink of eviction, she’s desperate when she finds a too-good-to-be-true apartment in a beautiful Chicago neighborhood. Cassie knows there has to be a catch—only someone with a secret to hide would rent out a room for that price.
Of course, her new roommate Frederick J. Fitzwilliam is far from normal. He sleeps all day, is out at night on business, and talks like he walked out of a regency romance novel. He also leaves Cassie heart-melting notes around the apartment, cares about her art, and asks about her day. And he doesn’t look half bad shirtless, on the rare occasions they’re both home and awake. But when Cassie finds bags of blood in the fridge that definitely weren’t there earlier, Frederick has to come clean...
Cassie’s sexy new roommate is a vampire. And he has a proposition for her.
This was okay. I didn’t fall in love with the story but I also didn’t hate it. The premise was promising and there is a lot to like about the book but I didn’t feel any kind of chemistry between Cassie and Frederick. I really need to feel that chemistry when I pick up a romance or it just isn’t as enjoyable. This was an enjoyable enough read but it was missing that extra spark that would have taken it to the next level.
Frederick is a vampire who hopes to find a roommate. He has been out of commission for the past 100 years after a friend’s joke and hopes that a new roommate can help him acclimate to the modern world. Cassie is in need of a new place to live and can’t resist checking out the ad that seems too good to be true. Frederick turns out to be a very polite and kind roommate, although he is rather old-fashioned. Of course, he does eventually have to share his secret with Cassie.
I listened to the audiobook and thought Gilli Messer did an excellent job with the narration. I believe that this was the first time that I have listened to her work but I must say that I was quite impressed. I liked the voices that she used for the various characters and thought that she had a very pleasant voice. I am certain that her performance only added to my overall enjoyment.
I think that a lot of readers will like this book even more than I did. This is a rather low-angst story with a really interesting premise. I wouldn’t hesitate to read more of this author’s work in the future.
I received a review copy of this book from Berkley Publishing Group and Penguin Random House Audio.
This plot sounds fun, right? Could be campy but I do like to give debut authors a chance. I thought Jenna Levine did a good job of giving the reader a great feel for our heroine, Cassie. She was a little naive, had low self esteem due to her upbringing, but had a positive outlook on life. I actually liked her as our heroine. Frederick though, was a caricature of a European vampire. Very good looking, formal way of speaking, and dressed to the nines all the time. All of these things could have made for a fun character, but old Freddie just seemed kind of stiff and uninteresting, and admittedly he should have been the more interesting of the two due to his vampire status. Despite these minor problems, I kept reading hoping that the author would either deliver the camp or make our characters feel real and get me to root for their romance. Neither thing happened.
I did finish the book, and after reading through to the end and sitting on my feelings before writing the review I can say with confidence that this wasn’t my favorite book…. but I have definitely read worse. The author had some trouble with her characters, but the idea for the novel was sound. I just didn’t fall in love with this book.
If you go into this vampire romance novel expecting Twilight-esque vibes, you won’t find them in My Roommate is Vampire.
Instead, you get a sweet and considerate vampire named Frederick, his quirky artist roommate who is on her latest eviction, and their unconventional agreement to bring the recently reanimated, centuries-old vampire into the modern age.
It’s a little bit charming, a little bit steamy, a little bit campy, and a whole lot of fun to read.
Frederick is the kindest vampire you’ll ever meet, and after an unfortunate accident, he finds himself thrust into the twenty-first century with no knowledge of how anything invented within the last hundred years works.
Enter Cassie. She’s in need of a place to live—and while Frederick’s listing is definitely too good to be true—a desperate girl can’t be too choosy when the opportunity arises.
Once Cassie moves in, she immediately becomes suspicious of what Frederick does in his reversed schedule. Not wanting to pry too deeply, she and Frederick communicate mostly through notes and his over-the-top gifts.
However, when Cassie discovers his secret, their entire relationship shifts into something she never expected.
I loved Frederick and his old-fashioned ways. Not only is he adorable, he’s honorable and generous. His relationship with Cassie changes so much over the course of the story and just makes you love him all the more.
While it took me a little while to warm up to Cassie, I found her to be exactly what Frederick needed to come out of his shell. She handled the secret discovery as well as could be expected and still fell for Frederick and his lovely, once-beating heart.
I will say that Frederick’s only other friend, Reginald, and their banter is the highlight of the book for me.
So, if you’re looking for a paranormal, forced-proximity roommate romance with a lovely slow burn and a decent amount of steam, My Roommate is a Vampire might be just for you!
