This book was fun. It’s basically about a poor artist, looking for a new apartment when she hits the jackpot: nice apartment, cheap rent, great location, and hot roommate. The catch? He’s a really old vampire.
I actually liked the characters in this one and the narrator was spot on. Frederick was a fun character with his old fashioned ways. Bound to happen when you’ve been in a poison coma for over 100 years. I liked how Cassie grew through the story too. Became more sure of herself and her art.
4.5 stars - No stakes needed for this vampire!
This was such a charming, funny, and light-hearted story, I devoured the entire audibook in a day. The perfect romcom to break anyone out of a funk, especially myself since I've been reading darker stories lately. As a Twihard, I'm always a little leery of vampire stories, but this one has earned a special place in my heart.
Frederick gives off strong Mr. Darcy vibes and I was here for every moment. Cassie is a lovable character, with plenty of witty banter, making the perfect roommate for Frederick. Even his friend/enemy steals the scene on multiple occasions.
From a movie perspective, if you could combine Kate & Leopold and Forever Young, then make the male lead a vampire, you'd have this book! This will definitely be one I'll add to my yearly October list, and the audio was SO entertaining.
My Roommate Is a Vampire is a lighthearted, fluffy, and sometimes cheesy paranormal rom-com. When I think of vampires, I think edgy and sexy, so the book wasn't exactly what I expected. I liked the book, but I didn't love it. I would recommend My Roommate Is a Vampire to readers who like their romance books playful with no angst.
I thought I was over vampire books, but... I was WRONG. I loved this fun, steamy page-turner from a new author who is one to watch! Dare I hope for a sequel?
Cassie Greenberg is a struggling artist who has just been evicted and Fredrick J. Fitzwilliam is a struggling vampire who has just awoken from a 100-year coma into a modern world he doesn't understand. Of course, a suspicious Craigslist ad would bring these two together as roommates and a love story would ensue!
I don't know why, it's a silly premise and the cover promises a fluffy fun read, but I couldn't get enough of these two goofballs or their romance. Maybe I just needed something light and fun. I can see why people are enjoying this so much. About 20% of the way through this I had to see if Ms. Levine had written anything else I needed to start hunting down. This is her first book! Which I hope means many more campy, romantic romps to come!
Oh boy - this was fluff. Pure fluff. Nothing new or life changing, some wild contemporary social references, and a weird mix of Twilight/Raylo fanfiction. It was also oddly spicy for like 2 scenes when the rest of the time our main characters wouldn't touch each other at all so that felt like a little too much. I would have been happier with fade-to-black scenes because that would've fit the overall tone of the book much better.
I sadly don't have a lot to say about this one - it is fun but I won't remember it by the end of the year.
My Roommate is a Vampire is a fantasy romance featuring the forced proximity and age gap tropes. I would recommend this book to fans of fantasy romances like Eternally Yours by Patrice Caldwell et al., The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling, The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna, and Witcha Gonna Do? by Avery Flynn. Themes present include technology, society/ social norms, change versus tradition, displacement, companionship, arranged marriage, family, empowerment, and love.
First off, I didn’t realize that Frederick is almost a historical character in that he belongs in a different era; seeing as I’m not a fan of historical fiction, I found that I didn’t really connect with this historical character. Overall, I found My Roommate is a Vampire to be slow paced; not only was the romance very much a slow burn, but the first half of the book seemed like it was just setting up Cassie and Frederick’s story. When Cassie is trying to introduce Frederick to technology and social media, I thought that Frederick’s reactions were a tad cringey in that he was almost likened to a stereotype of an elderly person who doesn’t know how to use technology. Lastly, I found it odd that the conflict was both introduced and easily resolved within the last couple of chapters; I felt like this was a tad rushed and could have been more engaging.
On the other hand, I thought that the plot of My Roommate is a Vampire, a displaced vampire needing help navigating modern society, was unique in comparison to other vampire romances I’ve read. I enjoyed all the romantic texts and notes that Frederick and Cassie exchange throughout the novel as I thought that these were very sweet and swoony. My favourite moment was when Frederick, after determining that Taylor Swift is popular in modern society, brings up 1989 to blend in at a party and is hilariously labeled a “Swiftie” by Cassie’s friends.
Overall, I thought that My Roommate is a Vampire was a swoony and somewhat spicy rom com that would be a perfect addition to any fall or Halloween TBR list!
I am an absolute sucker for Reylo influenced books.
And this one was no different! I loved it so much! It was just so perfectly cute.
Helped that the fmc was named Cassie, lol.
Fun, cute, funny, and adorable!
This was precisely how I thought it would be! Fluffy, funny, and heartwarming, books like this make my life as a reader amazing. I loved how much of a teddy bear Frederick was. He's been in a coma for a long time and does not know how to act in our current world. Cassie doesn't think twice about his quirks because the rent in his apartment is so cheap and she is desperately trying to get her life in order. The back and forth through little notes they left each other was so cute!
The romance was sweet but also had me covering my eyes because NO FREDDY IS SO INNOCENT but oh boy is he not when he gets under the sheets. I would have asked a lot more questions if I were Cassie, but she seemed to get with his vampirism quickly (probably because he's so hot. I would too)
Reginald is Frederick's friend and reminded me a lot of Matt Berry's character in What We Do In The Shadows but less vulgar. He was probably my favorite character. Cassie's best friend Sam is also amazing, but I wish she would have confided in him a bit more.
The cons:
There are some parts of the plot that were not fleshed out and left me confused. The overall conflict was also resolved far too easily and quickly.
Overall, I had a good time reading this one and will definitely read more if the author decides to make it a series.
3.5
My Roommate Is a Vampire follows Cassie who is on the brink of eviction and desperate to find a new place. She sees an ad for an apartment in a great neighborhood with cheap rent and a nice roommate. Cassie jumps at the apartment but still thinks it is too good to be true. Her new roommate Frederick seems a little odd because he sleeps during the day and is out at night on business. The two rarely see each other and communicate mostly through notes. Cassie starts to fall for Frederick. But soon she learns the truth about Frederick he is a vampire. Now Cassie has to decide if she wants to live with him or move on.
This was such a cute read. It took me back to middle school when I was obsessed with Twilight. I did think it took a while to build up to the romance part. I wish that part was not dragged out so much. But other than that I really enjoyed how a vampire was trying to adjust to the modern world. The relationship between the main characters was also really cute. If you grew up reading vampire books like I did I would highly suggest this one.
Thank you Jenna Levine, Berkley Romance, and Netgalley for the ARC of this book.
this book was fucking delightful. absolutely absurd and ridiculous but delightful.
my only complaints:
- i always find it incredibly hard to read about creatives (singers, performers, artists) because the description of their work always feels very cliché. cassie’s art rlly tested my limits lmfao
- I KNOW that the ending was good… however….. sorry i am pained by unresolved stuff and i hate the idea of “i’ll think about it” rather than “yes.” (that is very confusing and misleading but oh well)
- sometimes fredrick’s confusions about the real world we’re weird?? idk at times he spoke in a very bizarre way that didn’t feel like someone who had been alive in the 1920s…. very weird but i guess that’s to be expected for comedic effect
DESPITE THOSE!!! i rlly liked this!! it was so incredibly silly while also maintaining so much heart. (and surprisingly super sexy? idk why i say surprisingly, vampires are sexy)
anyway!! super fun read, super unique, super quick and enjoyable
The most unrealistic part of this book was the possibility that the rent was $200. Even for a three hundred year old vampire who was asleep for one hundred years, But the amount of love I have for that ancient, beautiful man makes it okay. I was really falling in love with a vampire named Frederick, not surprising really. I always was Team Edward.
I loved this book. Cassie and Frederick were an absolute delight to read. This book was a breath of fresh air. I truly think that Jenna Levine is a new favourite author for me. Her voice is so bubbly and bright. I loved how Cassie’s reactions were so realistic to finding out that your roommate was actually a vampire. This book was wonderful.
I hope Reginald is going to get his HEA next because that chaos would be so fun to read.
Thank you NetGalley for providing my with an ARC in exchange for an honest review :)
Rating: 4.5 stars!
This was so FUN!! I found myself laughing out loud as I sat in bed reading this until 1am - Frederick was so silly. This reminded me of The Flatmate sometimes, but was still completely unique and different in its own way. I love the letters they exchanged to each other and Frederick's attempts at blending into modern society were hilarious - especially when Cassie thought he was just trying to be funny. I was tempted to give 5 stars solely for the mention of my favorite K-drama - Crash Landing on You!
I found the ending to fall just a bit flat and rushed - the conflict came and was resolved too fast for me, but I enjoyed the Epilogue :)
A great new Romantic Comedy!
My Roommate is a Vampire is about exactly what you think. Cassie is an artist who is in desperate need of a new place to live. Frederick is a rich vampire who needs someone to teach him how to fit into modern society because he was in a coma for 100 years. Romance and ridiculousness ensue. It was almost the story I wanted to read but never quite got to where I needed it to go.
Cassie needed to find somewhere to live and quick. When she saw a listing on Craig's List for an apartment in Lincoln Park for only $200 a month, it seemed too good to be true and maybe it was. Though she was initially wary, the owner, Frederick, grew on her with his very formal and old fashioned ways, and she decided to stay. Little did she know that this arrangement would result in a friendship and a whole lot more.
I didn't quite know what to expect when I picked up this novel, but I could not resist a title like that. And, you know what? I had a rather delightful time getting to know Cassie and Frederick.
The premise was a fun one. Frederick had been a coma for many, many, MANY years, and now that he had awakened, he needed guidance navigating the modern world. That's where his roommate fit in. He would observe them, and they would be his guide on how to fit into this new world. Obviously, this resulted in some amusing situations, but what I really adored was the growing friendship and attraction between Cassie and Frederick. One moment that really stood out for me was when they were watching episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer together. The resulting discourse tickled me, and it was also fun remembering a show I loved so much.
Though this story was told primarily from Cassie's point of view, Levine allowed me into Frederick's head via notes, texts, and diary entries. I was grateful for that because I always yearn for both parties' thoughts when reading a romance. It may even be really important for me to fully buy into the relationship.
There was one plot point which I felt was resolved too quickly (easily?), but it was a small blip in a story I had a great time reading. Overall, I found this to be a solid debut. I even felt like a door was left open for a sequel or companion novel, and I know I would happily return to this world.
I absolutely LOVED this book and I ATE it up. If it hadn't been for the plans I'd had the night I started the book, I easily would've finished it in one sitting. That's how invested I was. I didn't go into this book with high expectations - I imagined it was either going to go really well, or really poorly and I'm SO happy it went well.
This book felt like one of the 2000s Disney Channel movies with the far-fetched (but fun) plot, messy (but lovable) characters, cringey (but also not) humor. Cassie was great as an MC and Fredrick was AMAZING as a love interest. He made the book for me. He just gave lost puppy, golden retriever energy throughout the book. His dialogue was hilarious, and the way he treated Cassie was so wonderful. Their interactions through their notes was a pleasure to read. And can we talk about the spicy scene? Because WOW, it was fantastic.
Is the book perfect? Certainly not. Cassie accepts vampires are a thing FAR too easily and the ending was just... whack. Too rushed, too easy. But considering I was smiling and giggling and kicking my feet during this book... I don't really care for those imperfections. I'm willing to turn a semi-blind eye to them.
Overall, this book was a blast and I will be eagerly waiting for this author's future books!
Cassie Greenberg needed a room to rent and felt so lucky she found one for $200 a month in a great neighborhood with a good looking roommate and although the furnishings were quite antique and from different era’s it was still way more than she expected for the price. She did find her roommate although extremely hot a bit awkward and old fashion what Cassie doesn’t know is that her roommate is a vampire and he is falling for her as much as she is falling for him. Unfortunately his mother wants him to honor the arrangement she made for him to marry another woman. Her name is Esmeralda Jamison and just like Frederick‘s mother she doesn’t take no for an answer there are many reasons why Frederick and Cassie cannot be together most of all because she is mortal and he is a vampire but needs moss in love sometimes when’s the day but what about his mother Cassie was just supposed to teach him how to live in the modern era in the last thing Kathy needs is complications especially when all her dreams seem to be coming true but it’s being with a vampire part of those dreams? This was my favorite book this year I absolutely loved this book I love reading Frederick and Casey’s correspondence with Fredericks oh so innocent viewpoint of today I thought his hatred of Reginald was hilarious I love Sam and his husband I did think Cassies art sounded weird but that’s just my opinion and a minor part to the story. This is a great book and one I highly recommend a definite five star laugh out loud hilariously funny sweet romance read! I want to thank Berkeley publishing and NetGalley for my free arc copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
“My Roommate Is a Vampire” by Jenna Levine was exactly what I needed. It was a light, fun, easy read that I flew through in 2 days! We all know that every book plot has a conflict, a moment when our happy story comes to a screeching halt and something happens that our characters must overcome. What I liked about this story is that the conflict wasn’t too heavy, too drawn out, too dark.
As I said before, this was an incredibly light read, and I was entertained the whole time. It read like a rom-com, but our dashing love interest was a vampire, so I loved it. What I didn’t really like was the quick wrap up. This tends to be a recurring problem for me, as I really enjoy the story, then the ending just… ends too quickly or too simply. That is my only complaint! Other than that, I thought this was a perfect read to get me in the mood for fall.
4/5 Stars.
A cute and fun paranormal romance, perfect for spooky season!!
It fell a little flat for me in a few spots - first, when Cassie finds out her roommate is a vampire, she just kind of accepts the fact that vampires exist immediately, without really any questioning.
And then the end was a little anti-climatic for me.
But I think anyone wanting an easy read during the fall time would love this book!
I absolutely adored this cozy vampire romance! It was such a different pacing and vibe than other vampire romances, and while I love those, what set this one apart really made it shine. The reader is presented with the crazy idea of a vampire needing a roommate, and then when the roommate shows up, the vampire starts to have feelings. This is very much a slow burn sort of romance, alongside the popular trope of forced proximity, and the cast of characters make you feel like you know everyone without getting overwhelmed with details. The writing style is set at a good pace, especially for a "cozy" sort of romance where you want to feel like you're reading it real-time. This sort of story I always find is best read slowly, rather than rushing through to the end, and that's exactly what I did.
In desperate need of a new place to live, unemployed art teacher Cassie Greenberg is amazed to find a listing for a Chicago apartment in a nice neighborhood for just $200/month. Her best friend sees it as a giant red flag...but Cassie sees it as an opportunity. Upon meeting her potential roomie, she finds a gorgeous man completely out of touch with reality, including modern-day prices. Assuming he is just rich with no sense of how much things cost, she moves in and slowly adjusts to living with him. Given that he sleeps during the day and works at night, she is unbothered by his nocturnal activities...until one day she comes home early from a night out to find the fridge full of blood. Someone has some explaining to do. Frederick J. Fitzwilliam has no idea how to live in the 21st century, having been in a deep sleep for the last 100 years, and he is desperate to have a human companion to teach him how to live in present day. Making a deal with Cassie is easy, but keeping his feelings under control and his hands to himself is not. Especially when he realizes Cassie may just have feelings for him too.
The dynamic between Cassie and Frederick was so spot on - the chemistry, the daily interactions when they were just roommates, and how Cassie rolled with the punches as she learned about each new quirk Frederick had. The part of the story before she founds out he was a vampire were perhaps my favorite, simply because she just kept rationalizing everything. Strange closet she's not allowed in? He probably has an embarrassing collection of Precious Moments figurines. No cookware to be found in the kitchen? He must have so much money that he can eat out for every meal. I have to say, I'm not sure I would let so many things slide, but Cassie was so chill the entire time. Until the blood, of course. She wasn't so chill about that. But then Frederick was such a sweetheart, so genuine and understanding of her concerns. He really just wanted to make sure she was comfortable, and it was quite clear that they both missed each other's company when they were apart. And then when Cassie got Frederick new clothes to fit modern day fashion? That's when the steam started to form, and soon they couldn't resist the temptation of a romance. Even if it was likely doomed due to her mortality. Or is it? The book ends with a HFN ending, so maybe we'll find out in the future how they deal with that pesky problem.
I am so excited to have found this author at the beginning of her career, and I'm certain she'll be an auto-buy for me going forward. Between her character development, writing style, and overall cozy plot vibes, I am sure to like whatever she writes next.
Roommance, vampires and a hot mess heroine. This really should have worked for me, but it fell flat. There were some funny moments, but the old-timey man wakes up after 100 years bit got stale pretty quick. I didn't get the tension or depth I needed, which makes for a pretty fluffy but surface-level read. That said, the book was picked as an Indie Next title, so other people love it!
