This was such a cute rom-com! Funny, low angst, plenty of steam when it counted. Cassie is super easy to root for, and Frederick is adorable in a just-out-of-a-Jane Austen-novel" kind of way. I could have read several more chapters of Cassie trying to teach Frederick about the modern world. Perfect reading for when you need a light, humorous romance!
Thank you to Berkley and NetGalley for an e-arc of this book.
It was fine. It was cute. I got to 50% and was like, do I even care about finishing this book? The answer was...not really. I was not invested in this book at all. I don't know what I was expecting, but I certainly was left wanting. I didn't feel any chemistry between the characters, which I wish I had, because I feel like this is a concept I would have adored.
The other issue was...Cassie. As a character, I found her not the most likeable, and her inner thoughts were...a tad bit irritating. I would have forgiven all the above if I had been invested in the romance or the plot, but I was invested in neither.
And I am a huge PNR fan -- I love vampire romances, but to me, it felt like the vampires were on the backburner, and had less to do with the story. Despite the title of the book.
It was cute, but not a book that I would be inclined to pick up again.
This was such a fun, cozy and quick read! I knew from the very beginning that I was going to love it! I mean, I’m a sucker for a vampire story!
My Roommate Is a Vampire was laugh out loud funny! The best part of this book was Cassie helping Frederick navigate the modern world. He is cloudless about the 21st century so there are lots of hilarious scenes. When this is released, I’m going to have to get the audiobook so I can reread!
The romance was sweet! I really enjoyed their back and forth letters. It was such a clever way for them to get to know each other.
The ending was a little too easy and kind of rushed. You’d think that since vampires are involved it would have been more dangerous. I do like how things wrapped up though. I would 100% devour a sequel!
Other random things that I loved:
-Cassie’s little drawings on the letters
-Cassie’s love for art & Frederick’s interest in her passion
-Frederick learning to use Instagram..specifically what he commented on a post
-The messages between Frederick and Reginald made me laugh
-The Taylor Swift references
-Frederick ordering a coffee
-Fruit
If you are looking for a hilarious & cute paranormal romance to sink your teeth into, add this to your TBR immediately! Spooky season is on its way and this book would be perfect to pick up!
My Roommate is a Vampire by Jenna Levine
Vampire romcom meets roommates trope!! I don't read paranormal romance often, but steamy vampire romances that aren't too dark or scary are definitely my type.
Cassie is desperate for a place to live and can't pass up the price of this apartment. Her roommate seems a little odd, but she assumes she isn't in any real danger until she discovers the undeniable evidence that he is a vampire. He explains that he has been asleep for the last century and needs her help to live among humans.
What I liked:
🦇My favorite part of this book is the notes that Frederick and Cassie leave for each other in their apartment. It reminded me of The Flatshare, because Cassie sleeps at night and Frederick sleeps during the day, so there is a lot of communication through letters.
🦇 Classic awkward roommie moments, such as the post-shower towel-only run-in.
🦇Frederick, being a centuries old vampire, is very formal and starchy. He also reads regency romance!
🦇 They watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer together and have some cute moments...
🦇 Set in Chicago and Naperville, IL (who knew there was a vampire dungeon in the city I grew up 😅)
🦇 A book that came to mind while reading this was Just Like Magic by Sarah Hogle, because each hero is out of place and the magic/paranormal aspect is more silly than sexy.
👎
🦇 This was really missing the chemistry and pining of a typical vampire romance. Like, does he even vant to suck her blood? He is way too chill around her. There's no Twilight-y "This is the skin of a killer, Bella" stuff in this one. He doesn't really seem very thirsty, if you know what I mean...
🦇 I like that Frederick was starchy, earnest, and kind. . .but he was unfortunately a really bland character overall. I think this book could have been more interesting if we also got his point of view.
🦇 I really wanted more information about vampire life and myths. Cassie barely asks him anything about being a vampire. Is he super fast? How often does he need to feed?Does he sparkle in the sun? Can he drink animals? We get some vampire world-building eventually, but it felt like too-little-too-late. He just didn't *feel* like a vampire at all and his secret magical ability was absolutely ridiculous... I am seriously still scratching my head about this choice.
🦇 I think my hopes were too high for this one and by the second half I was disappointed with the character development and story arc. By the end, I still had so many unanswered questions.
There is still a chance I'd read a sequel if there will be one. However, I think I'd try it on audio instead of taking the time to read it.
Thanks so much Berkley and Netgalley! All thoughts are my own.
I'm not a big vampire fan but when my friend Kristin told me that I needed to read this immediately, I picked it up. I wasn't expecting to read it in less than a few days! It was a super fast read and extremely humorous.
What would have made this book even better for me is it were a dual POV, especially considering Fredrick being a damn vampire. I do feel like Cassie and Fredrick's chemistry wasn't as strong on page and needed to be a bit more flushed out. It's very much an insta-love/instant attraction romance. I also think that the conflict at the end was resolved way too quickly and the ending was abrupt.
What I did like about it was how funny it was. Cassie is teaching Fredrick how to act like a normal human in this day in age and he is not having it, especially texting. He has a vampire buddy Reginald that is an absolute riot and I hope he ends up getting a sequel because I need more of that guy. Cassie is also a relatable character for me as she is around my age and doesn't know what the fuck she wants to do with her life at the beginning of the book but we follow her as she realizes her dreams and how she goes about achieving them. I thought that was really inspiring!
If you love vampires and want a super quick and fun read, I highly recommend this one! It was perfect to pick up and get lost in the pages.
As much as I enjoyed reading this story, some of it fall flat for me. I couldn't get into the main character and her love interest development. It just wasn't for me.
I went into this book expecting a lighthearted, hopefully funny, maybe a little spicy (?) romcom about a girl who accidentally moves in with a hot vampire, with an added bonus of it being set in Chicago (where I've lived for 20+ years). Was I expecting a literary masterpiece? No... but I was hoping for something more, especially from the main female character, Cassie, who was deeply irritating and not enjoyable to read about at all.
You see, Cassie is an Artist - a capital A Artist - who paints landscapes and then glues trash to the canvas to make a statement about consumer society or something. Her Art is apparently too subversive for anyone to appreciate (lol), so she struggles to make ends meet as a barista. She moves in with vampire dude, Frederick J. Fitzwilliam (FJF), who immediately thinks she is the most amazing creature he's ever seen and super digs her trash art, and romance develops with some ups and downs along the way.
There were some legitimately funny moments - the vampire dungeon in Naperville was hilarious, and I liked a lot of FJF's ridiculous confusion about modern society, but then... Cassie. Cassie and her art were so cringey it pulled me out of the story. I loved the cover and the premise of this and thought there was a lot of potential, so hopefully other readers are able to enjoy it more than I did.
While this could be a cute, fun escapist read, the directionless rambling of the first two chapters had me not just lost interest, but never actually gain interest.
It might get better once you immerse yourself in the story, but the style of writing didn't lead me to believe this.
Again, reviews are just opinions. Your opinion might be different!
I am always here for a dark prince and My Roommate Is A Vampire definitely gave me that. That said, the writing did not match the tension these two characters had while we didn’t see them grow a lot either as people/occults. If you want a quick steamy read, Levine’s book is a lot of fun but I wouldn’t expect a lot of character building.
This one was such a fun read! I did find it a bit cringey that Tiktok played such a large role in the plot, but that was such a minor qualm it didn't really matter. As always, watching clueless immortals discover and explore the modern world was hilarious. The main romance was adorably cute and fluffy. I'd recommend this one!
4.5 stars (rounded up)!
The cover of My Roommate is a Vampire immediately made me want to pick up this book and it truly fits the content of the story. Romcom vibes throughout!
Cassie, "perennial fuckup", unknowingly moves into a 300-year-old vampire's apartment. This 300-year-old vampire, Frederick, is so sweet and completely clueless making him instantly loveable. Of all things, he gives Cassie kumquats as a welcome gift. I mean, if that's not the most adorable thing, I don't know what is. He's so incredibly out of the 21st century loop that his ignorance is actually endearing and quite hilarious.
"He might be an undead creature of the night--but as undead creatures of the night went, he was a marshmallow."*
The connection Cassie and Frederick form over the course of the story is sweet. They write notes to each other and leave them on the kitchen counter, cute! I appreciated the more realistic reactions Cassie has to her situation as the story progresses even with this whole story being wildly unrealistic. She finds out she's living with a vampire, that's bound to freak anyone out.
As Reginald said, "I'm at once surprised, because it is really silly, and not at all surprised."*
I think that sums my reading experience up quite well.
Overall, a fantastic read if you're looking for something a little out the vampire norm with a more fluffy, silly plotline.
HUGE thank you to Berkley Romance via NetGalley for the e-ARC to read, enjoy, and honestly review.

My Roommate Is a Vampire was such a fun and charming book. I easily binge-read this late into the night and could not stop until the conclusion was met. This story is about Cassie, an artist that is down on her luck. She finds a Craigslist ad for a ritzy apartment that is cheap to rent and seems too good to be true, especially when she moves in and finds that her roommate and landlord, the mysterious Frederick J. Fitzwilliam, has a few conditions such as never entering a certain room and never enter a closet that has a big lock on it. Beyond that, Frederick dresses and speaks as if he lives in the Regency era, only comes out at night, and is oddly pale. Nothing fishy about that at all. Since Cassie is left with no other option despite the oddities, she decides to stay in the apartment and finds herself growing closer and closer to the enigmatic Frederick, who is on a schedule opposite hers so they end up writing each other letters throughout their days. Just when Cassie starts to believe that maybe there is perhaps something between them, everything changes when she discovers a bag full of blood in their refrigerator.
The premise lived up to my personal hype. I really enjoyed this book. I thought Frederick especially was a rich character that I loved getting to know. I think Cassie was funny as well, although she just did not shine as much as I would have liked considering she is the main character of this book. The romance was to die for (pun intended), and I just found myself smiling constantly at the banter and dynamics between Cassie and Frederick. Would recommend. A bloody good romance!
This was fun, but I'll admit that parts fell a little flat for me - just a couple times, so just 1 star removed, but wanted to mention it still. I absolutely love the cover though and still plan to grab a copy of it for my bookshelves! I also know this is a bit biased, lmao, but I love stories that have characters with my name! It's just so fun, haha.
I love the concept and the idea behind the story, but it felt like it needed more development. There were a ton of funny bits that I enjoyed, but overall I thought it was lacking in a lot of areas, especially concerning Frederick. His personality seemed kind of inconsistent. There were times that I wish we could've seen more background and development from him. I think he was still enjoyable to read about and really funny but there needed to be some more buildings for his character. The same goes for the story, as it felt a bit surface-level. And the ending especially left a lot to be desired. There was surprisingly a large amount of time discussing Buffy for such a short book.
Cassie was the best part of the story as I loved getting to see her become more confident and secure in herself as an artist. Overall I enjoyed the book and thought it was fine.
This was such a fun read! Finished in one sitting, because it was just so cute. Cassie responds to a roommate wanted Craigslist ad in upscale neighborhood at a too-good-to-be-true price. The owner of the house keeps odd hours, speaks and dresses like he's in an episode of Downton Abbey, but Cassie is out of options as she's being evicted from her current housing situation and works part-time jobs to make ends meet.
It is too-good-to-be-true, as her housemate Frederick J. Fitzwilliam is a vampire. The odd couple scenario is super cute, and I really loved Cassie and Frederick separately, but especially together. Although this is told from Cassie's POV, there are fun text conversations, diary entries, and letters from Frederick sprinkled at the beginning of each chapter.
I binge read this entire book in one evening. There were many times I had tears running down my face from laughing so hard. I completely fell in love with Cassie and Frederick. They are couple goals, I loved everything about this book and will hence forth scream it from the hilltops. All the stars. (Oh and Cassie is right - Giles is the best man on Buffy.)
When you find a Craiglists add for a gorgeous apartment but for only $200... something's gotta be wrong right? Like the fact that your roommate might be a real life vampire... but rent is so cheap so why not? It doesn't hurt that he's also absolutely stunning and the sweetest guy ever. Cassie Greenberg is an artist, she just hasn't really found a way to make a living out of it. She's being evicted from her apartment but suddenly finds a too good to be true apartment listing for an extremely cheap price so she decides to apply for the listing despite her reservations... and when she arrives to meet her roommate its a absolutely gorgeous but slightly weird guy named Frederick J. Fitzwilliam who speaks very formally, is only awake during the night, and dresses like he came out of a regency novel. Despite all of that Frederick is extremely sweet and funny so Cassie decides to move in... but strange things begin happening... and when Cassie finds bags of blood in the fridge Frederick has some explaining to do. Falling for your hot vampire roommate?? When can I move in. This was such a cute and funny rom com and I adored Frederick so much. This was a really fun read and I would definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a sweet light hearted rom com with a vampire in it!

Rating 1.5
This had potential, but it wasn't good. The dialogue was cringey and the story and characters were boring.
The entire concept of this book still makes us laugh: Cassie is looking for a new place to live and comes across a suspiciously-low priced ISO ad on Craigslist: only $200/month for a room in a gorgeous lakeside townhouse in Chicago. But beggars can't be choosers. When she moves in, her (super hawt) roommate acts a bit weird. He only comes out at night, has not a single cooking implement in the whole place. leaves her notes on stationery sealed with wax, and (perhaps weirdest of all) won't share the wifi password with her.
Yeah, he's a vampire, y'all.
The comedy of errors was the very best part! The romance felt a little secondary to the whole concept, but that didn't bother us. We would have really liked a little more vampire lore, though. We get dribs and drabs of it, but Frederick never sits down with Cassie and lays it all out. (Would this have been a little cliche? Sure! But WE'RE READING A VAMPIRE ROMANCE, we don't mind cliches.)
Would we read another vampire romance in this universe? Oh, yeah. Especially if it features Reggie...
This objective review is based on a complimentary copy of the novel.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5 stars
My Roommate Is a Vampire is a hilarious and joyful little romcom. The story follows Cassie, an artist desperately looking for a place to rent. When she comes across an odd ad for a roommate, she has her suspicions, but the rent is too low to turn down. She meets her new roommate, Fredrick J. Fitzwilliam, and immediately recognizes that he is 1) very odd and 2) very attractive. When Cassie finds blood in the fridge though..she has serious questions.
This book made me laugh out loud so many times. It is so goofy and unhinged, but so cozy and fun. I loved Fredrick and Cassie and their chemistry was so soft and sweet. Their banter was off the wall and wacky and I loved every minute. A nice change of pace from the typical forced proximity romcoms!
