This is a kooky, cute vampire rom-com. This is Jenna Levine's debut and she did an excellent job of entertaining me. This is a Flatshare meets Twilight type of book. Only much funnier and more ridiculous. This had me laughing so many times.
Cassie Greenberg is an artist who isn't doing too well financially. She loves her art class at the library and has been applying for Art Teacher positions with no luck.
Frederick J. Fitzwilliam is a landlord who dresses and acts like a character from the regency era. He lives in an upper-class apartment in a nice area of town.
Frederick places a Craigslist ad for a roommate for only $200 a month. Cassie wonders what is wrong with the place or with Frederick since it is a nice area, but so affordable on her tiny budget. Surprisingly, Cassie was the only one to reply to the ad so he immediately offered her the room....on a few conditions. One, she is to NEVER go in his room. And Two, she is to NEVER open the closet door that is padlocked shut. Ya, not sketchy at all! But she is left with sleeping on her gay best friend's couch or sleeping on the street. She has no choice since she is being evicted. So Cassie ignores all the red flags and moves in.
What she didn't expect was that she was going to be attracted to the cute, weird guy. He writes her letters in nice handwriting and seals them with a seal stamp. They don't often see each other since they have opposite hours. She never did find out what he did before she moved in. She just assumed some kind of doctor, with his strange hours and his old-school manners. When she meets his friend, Reginald, she finally learns the truth about Frederick. Will that be enough to scare her away??
This one was hilarious and ridiculous and I couldn't stop reading it. Warning, there are open door scenes in this one. This was such a quick read but I highly enjoyed it. I can totally see this being a rom-com for the big screen. This was just the fun, light book I didn't know I needed.
Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for sharing this highly entertaining DRC with me in exchange for my honest thoughts.
I really liked this one! I think the vampire element was a very welcome twist. I found found myself feeling like I was reading the same story over and over again, so this one felt very fresh. Well done! Sweet and funny.
Cassie Greenberg loves being an artist, but it doesn't pay the bills. She's days away from being evicted from her apartment and is desperate to find somewhere to live other than her best friend's couch. When she comes across an ad for a beautiful apartment that seems way too good to be true, Cassie figures she has nothing left to lose. Right off the bat, Cassie senses there's something off about her new roommate, Frederick J. Fitzwilliam. He's pale, oddly formal, sleeps all day, and stays out all night. He also leaves sweet notes for Cassie, asking her about her day or her artwork, and genuinely seems interested in getting to know her. But when Cassie finds a bag of blood in the fridge, she realizes her new roommate is hiding a big secret.
The premise of this sounded too good to pass up. While it was fun, I didn't love it as much as I hoped to. I think it was due to the structure of the story. Nothing felt fully fleshed out. It was almost as if the whole thing was still in its idea phase. I wanted more of Frederick and his backstory. It felt like everything about him was dumped on us at the end rather than building up to it. I also wished we got to see more of his vampire side. However, he was my favorite character because he was so hopeless and buttoned-up that he was funny without even trying. The romance between him and Cassie was okay, but again, it felt surface-level. It was a super quick read--I read it in one sitting--and I would still recommend it if you're looking for a quirky supernatural romance.

BASICALLY A 1000 yr Mr. Darcy MEETS A MODERN DAY GIRL LIKE US!
This is an absolutely laugh-out-loud, entertaining, and eccentric paranormal romance between a quirky, selfless, artsy heroine and a cinnamon bun immortal with dreamy Mr. Darcy vibes.
The main concept can be defined as "What We Do in the Shadows" meets "Flatshare" with more modern vibes.
Cassie is in search of an apartment when she finds an ad for a ridiculously cheap room. The roommate works nights and sleeps all day, dresses and speaks in an old fashioned way, and seems to have limited knowledge of current customs and events. It doesn’t take long for Cassie to suspect he’s a very good looking vampire.
This is a fun, whimsical paranormal romance debut. The storyline is cute and filled with pop culture references. Frederick is a sweet, quirky cinnamon roll main character and I enjoyed the funny side character, Reginald. The storyline is funny and lighthearted, with minimal conflict. It’s a very quick and entertaining read! There are plenty of vampire references like Twilight, Buffy, and Anne Rice books. If you like sweet, funny rom coms, Taylor Swift references, and quirky characters, you should read this book!
Thank you to Jenna Levine and Berkley Romance for sending me an arc in exchange for my honest review.
I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley and am voluntarily writing an honest review.
My Roommate is a Vampire is the story of Cassie, an artist who is struggling to find a place to live. She answers a sketchy Craigslist ad for a roommate, only her roommate is not exactly what she expects…
This is a very fun book; I really enjoyed it. The characters were fun and well developed and the relationships were believable.
I’m a sucker for vampire books and this has to be one of the most charming ones – the vampires in this book aren’t particularly frightening, and they’re more interesting as you learn about them and help Cassie introduce them to the modern world.
My only problem with this book is that I thought the ending was a little squished – it needed more time and felt a little rushed. Other than that, I recommend this book to people who like books about vampires, but not particularly scary ones.
3.5 stars. Artist Cassie’s housing situation is desperate enough that she ignores a color guard’s worth of red flags and moves in with the enigmatic Frederick. Her new roommate keeps weird nocturnal hours, has a forbidden closet, and owns no pots or pans. He’s also ridiculously attractive and seems to have no idea how to navigate 21st century America. Still it’s a shock (is it, though?) when she learns that he’s actually a 300-year-old vampire who needs her help to learn to operate undetected in modern society.
This was cute but I still have questions after finishing it. Frederick’s quest to fit into modern life was the best part. He’s so charming and clueless, like an adorable puppy. Their dynamic is very Kate and Leopold. But I was less invested in Cassie’s art career, their simmering romance, or the third act conflict that threatens the new lovers—and then abruptly wraps up.
Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher, and the author for the ARC to review. All opinions are my own.
I adored this sweet vampire rom com. Both characters, centuries old Frederick Fitzwilliam and human Cassie, are endearing and adorable and I was rooting for them right from the start.
Frederick, having suffered a century long nap as the result of his "friend" Reginald's prank, is now trying to learn to navigate the modern world. At Reginald's advice, he decides getting a roommate who is willing to assist him in his education is the best way to do so.
Enter Cassie. A little insecure, artistic and sooo ready for something good to happen in her life....
This was just a sweet, fun wonderful read!
This book was really cute! I have always had a love of a paranormal romance and this cute rom-comish one was right up my alley. I loved seeing how Cassie's and Fredrick's relationship changed over the course of the book. Cassie being such an artistic and eclectic individual while Fredrick is super straightforward and laced up is the perfect definition of opposites attract. I definitely laughed out loud during a couple of scenes, but I would have like to learn more about Fredrick's backstory and how he became a vampire. One other thing that I would have liked was this book to be longer but I do appreciate that the author left the ending of the book open for a sequel.
My Roommate is a Vampire is a fast-paced, light read, great for commutes or vacations. Cassie is an artist, struggling to make ends meet. I have to admit I wasn’t sure if we, the readers, have a clear understanding of how her work was received. It felt very much like Pam’s art from The Office, like people were indulging Cassie’s dream out of politeness. Is her art “good?” Well, I guess that’s a larger point at work here. What is good art? I found myself more focused on that than the romantic elements of the story. There are some cute and funny moments as Frederick tries to learn how to fit into modern life. I’d give this a 3.5 out of 5 stars.
This one was so fun. Was it the best thing I have ever read? No, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was a fast read. If you like vampires and romcoms then this is for you.
Thank you @netgalley for sending me an ARC of My Roomate is a Vampire in exchange for an honest review!
The story follows Cassie Greenberg, a struggling artist who needs a cheap place to live. When she finds a craiglist add for an apartment with 200 $ rent, she wonder what's wrong with her roomate. But she's not expecting to fall for Frederick J. Fitzwilliam, her vampire roomate.
I really enjoyed their relationship! Cassie always believed she was a nobody but Frederick showed her that she deserves respect and recognition. Cassie teaching Frederick about the modern world is so cute, he tries his hardest to learn and to make her happy, even if he doesn't always manage.
I love how they write letters to each other. Communicating through letters is an habbit that is fading from society, but I think it shouldn't. It's a proof of intimacy and respect, when it comes to someone you cherish.
I understand that Frederick is old fashioned and that he was jealous, but his reaction to seeing a picture of Cassie in a bikini was uncalled for. She's allowed to wear a bikini at the beach, that doesn't make her anyless interested in you. It just felt so possessive, women can wear whatever they want and their partners don't have the right to control that.
I thought it was a little odd that the vampires orderfood when they can't eat it. Isn't it a little bit of food waste? Perhaps they give it to other people, that would be nice.
The ending was a little underwelming. I expected that saving Frederick would be much more dangerous (and that it wouldn't involve TikTok at all). It's just that the phrase "brilliant Tiktok strategy" is something I never expected to read in my life.
I really loved the bisexual representation with Frederick. It just felt natural with his life story.
I really like this book, I just wish the ending had been a little more exciting!
TW:sexual content, kidnapping, violence, blood drinking.
Silly and fun but ultimately very underwhelming. Props to the author for knowing the correct answer to “who’s hotter, Angel or Spike?” is a resounding “Giles, actually!”
I had no clue what to expect coming into My Roommate is a Vampire. Was it going to read as a fantasy? A romance? As a sucker for any vampire book (yes…I grew up in the Twilight craze), I was intrigued by the concept of this story. Overall, I found this book okay. I enjoyed the little tidbits (texts, emails, news clippings) Levine added at the top of each chapter. I also liked the main and side characters. Reginald was such a delightful side character. Romance readers who like quick and lighthearted books will enjoy this one. Thank you to NetGalley for the arc.
MY ROOMMATE IS A VAMPIRE has been one of my most anticipated releases of this year, and I'm so happy to report it did *not* disappoint! I absolutely adored this book and can't wait for everyone to pick it up! We follow Cassie, who moves in with the mysterious and attractive Fredrick after seeing the outrageously affordable rent for his place in Chicago. Of course, the title gives away his secret, but it is so fun to follow Cassie as she discovers it for herself and gets to know Fredrick more. I laughed so many times while reading this book--mainly because Fredrick is so unknowledgeable about the human world and writes letters (and too straightforward Instagram comments) that he signs off as, "In Good Health, Fredrick." Honestly, this book is just a great time that doesn't take itself too seriously--and there's no third-act breakup! It was quick, romantic, and so much fun. Did I also sense some groundwork laid for a companion novel...? ;) I highly recommend it!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC (as always) :)
My favorite part about this book was the main character, Cassie. I loved her backstory, her hopes and dreams when it came to art, and overall just a 30-something trying to get her dream job.
The romance was cute, then a little spicy, then a happy epilogue.
It seemed WAY too short. Plot was very thin. I could literally map out the author being like "well, I need something to happen here, so let's add drama and have it resolved right away!" The only depth is Cassie, her art, and the glimpses of backstory we see regarding Frederick.
This is a light, fast, fun read. If you are looking for depth, do not look here.
Well this was quite addictive. I love how our FMC was down on her luck and somehow got a vampire roommate. The love came after the stability and reuniting her roommate with the real world was an added bonus. So good! And quite spicy!
Thank you Berkley for the advanced readers copy.
Looking for a contemporary romance with a bit of fantasy? My Roommate is a Vampire is the perfect mix between adorable and steamy. Cassie and Frederick navigate the awkwardness of new roommate struggles without much success – stumbling around, and into, each other things become more complicated with the revelation that Frederick is not what he appears to be. The story unfolds in a really charming fashion that keeps you rooting for Cassie and Frederick as they figure out how to be themselves and be around each other. My Roommate is a Vampire is a really strong debut and I hope to see more of Jenna Levine in the future. If you’re looking for a fun romp that delivers on the feel-good component of romantic comedies this book is the one for you!
This was a goofy & charming debut! I enjoyed the cinnamon bun/Darcy-esque hero (his last name is literally Fitzwilliam :D) and thought there were some genuinely funny moments that made me laugh out loud. I did think the heroine's art career component was under-developed and the third act conflict was resolved a little too easily, but overall, this was really enjoyable and I would continue in the series
This is a quick-easy to breeze through read that is perfect for anyone who is trying to get into the Paranormal Romance genre! I thought that the story was fun, had good pacing throughout, and humor to keep me reading! These books are definitely not easy to nail because there is a "fantastical element" that bends the norms of what exists, but I thoroughly enjoyed it!
