I wanted to love this SO BAD. But frankly, it was terrible. Horrible writing, bad romance with no chemistry, and steretypical vampires all around. The third act conflict was bad and resolved way too easily, and the comps were barely there. I can see The Flatshare a little bit, but What We Do in the Shadows? It felt like it wanted to be campy, but it fell flat.
Badly written Reylo fiction.
Also PLEASE stop writing these giant men with giant dicks and small women who can barely fit it. My god.
Oof I had really high hopes for this one but it was so hard to finish. It took me over two weeks and I had to force myself to pick it back up.
The dynamic between Frederick and Cassie felt incredibly fan-fic esque. He was just so obsessed and she was like “👉👈🥺 …but why?” (I was also asking …but why?” because I really wasn’t a fan.) In his eyes, she could do no wrong and she was on a major pedestal. Also she was upset there were no pans in the apartment after she moved in and I’m like girl??? You really didn’t have any pans?? Pot meet kettle. I dunno I just really didn’t feel it.
There was no chemistry and the infatuation was so instantaneous that I felt nothing for them as a couple. Despite the insta-love, their relationship “development” took so long and the pacing was really slow. The third act was external and didn’t force them to grow at all. It was really just DRY and boring and started a massive reading slump for me.
It also did not feel like a vampire romance?? The vampire stuff felt like an afterthought to try to make the plot seem unique. Vampires don’t automatically add razzle dazzle! You need to also provide the razzle and the dazzle! There wasn’t any lore and you’re kinda just like boom vampires exist which works sometimes…but it didn’t here. I could’ve maybe ignored it for super interesting character development and plot…but there wasn’t any.
Overall, I had to force myself to finish the book, and even then I could stay focused for more than a page or two before I needed another break. The premise seemed really fun and I love the cover but the delivery left much to be desired.

*The one sex scene was pretty lukewarm on my spice scale and didn’t do much for me. It also took so long for them to bang it out. There was minor bite play but mama wanted more.
Questions: his mom was a vampire but Frederick was randomly turned during the war? Was his mom always a vampire? Did she change him? Was he always going to change? Idk fam maybe I just didn’t focus.
Also I’m so sorry but I really didn’t understand her art. It felt so…performative.

Cassie Greenberg is desperate for a new place to live, and she finds an apartment that's too good to be true with roommate Frederick J. Fitzwilliam. She's out during the day and he's out at night; it's a perfect arrangement, until Cassie finds out he's a vampire.
I liked this story overall. I enjoyed the POV from Frederick in the forms of his texts to Reginald, and the notes between Cassie and Frederick. This is a slow burn and I found Cassie and Frederick to both be good people, and I was rooting for their relationship. Despite this being about vampires, it's a light and sweet romance. The last quarter of the book was fun and action-filled, and I was happy with the ending.
The writing was great and I'll definitely be recommending this through readers' advisory.
My Roommate is a Vampire is a delightfully quirky romance. It’s a little slow to start, but the humour picks up as soon as our heroine, Cassie, meets her new roommate. Frederick J. Fitzwilliam is not at all what she was expecting when she answered the Craigslist ad. He’s painfully attractive and painfully awkward. He’s old fashioned and severe, but utterly clueless about how the world works. The reason for all of this? He’s a vampire, of course!
The author makes good use of the reader’s double vision throughout the beginning of this book. We, as the reader, are fully aware that Frederick J. Fitzwilliam is a vampire, and we see all the signs, but Cassie remains understandably clueless. Frederick is quite literal, which adds quite a bit of the humour in the story. That said, while the book has funny parts, it’s never deliriously funny.
This book is told solely from Cassie’s point of view, but each chapter opens with a piece of epistolary that give us insights into Frederick’s past and his present. Text messages (which he despises sending and receiving), letters, and even diary entries all provide us with background information, giving us some cleverly placed clues about where the plot will lead later in the novel.
While the book gets a little steamy later on, it’s an unexpectedly wholesome vampire tale. It never gets particularly dark (despite the fact that the male lead drinks human blood!). Unfortunately, the author leaves a lot of questions unanswered. For example, Frederick mentions being “damned for all eternity” at one point, but that’s never brought up again. Are vampires truly “damned” in this world? If that’s the case, does that mean that Cassie and Frederick’s blossoming love should be avoided at all costs, out of fear for her soul?
All in all, this is a light, somewhat superficial vampire romance that’s a perfect pick-me-up for readers who want to read a vampire romance that is neither bloody nor violent, and definitely isn’t sparkly.

MY ROOMMATE IS A VAMPIRE is exactly what the title promises — a story of sheer ridiculousness that devolves as the pages go on.
The premise has merit, but the character development and execution of the plot could use some work. Particularly the ending. The entire dungeon bit was so unbelievable it just didn’t land. (I’ll say it — the whole affair was torridly and unapologetically unrealistic. And not in a way that draws a reader in.)
All in all, I’m not wholly convinced Jenna Levine’s debut is worth the effort. My advice? Proceed with caution.

My Roommate is a Vampire is a quirky, laugh out loud funny debut with characters that are goofy, endearing and extremely likable - and will be a great read when it comes as it transitions into spooky season!
All of us Twilight fans knew vampires can be sweet but Frederick puts Edward to shame. He is super sweet, caring, thoughtful and, in the end, just wants what is best for Cassie. Cassie is a passionate artist who has just been down on her luck and perfectly compliments Frederick.
It’s a slow burn with some tense and spicy moments - overall a great romance read!
Thank you to Berkley for the digital arc 💜
P.S. this book would be perfect for those who want to read fantasy but are intimidated. There are low stakes but still a little bit of world building that could help you get used to it before diving into a big fantasy romance.
I received an e-Arc from Netgalley and the publisher for an honest review.
I could not put this book down. This book made me laugh and made my toes curl up in a good way! It was so fun to read. It was quirky, fun, cute moments, and so much more. Once again vampires...are my jam, even in a rom com!
Rom Com and Vampires...it is a must!
Main characters: Cassie and Frederick are so goofy and fun and young! They just have this vibe that clicks so well. I loved the strange but tricky situations these two get in like at the party and on the train. Cassie is a young woman who is into libraries and art. She is so creative and kind. She's a good heroine I think. Frederick of course you find out what he is. He is so kind of making sure that Cassie has what she needs. He also slowly picks up on things which is pretty epic considering how old he is.
Basically Cassie is looking for an apartment where she comes across a good to be true place to move in on Craigslist. She takes the chance on it considering the conditions were a tad strange to her. In time she finds out the reasons for the conditions and almost flees from the apartment.
She adjusts to learning more about Frederick as he learns about her and the ways of the time. I will say there were great moments and wished the book had a bit more great moments like dress shopping, going to a party and more. I loved the reactions between Cassie and Frederick.
I loved the written letters exchange between Cassie and Frederick. That was so swoon worthy. Then the emails from Reggie aka Reginald and Fredericks were hilarious! I laughed quite a few times.
Another point I must point out is that I loved the fact that Chicago is mentioned along with Schaumburg and Naperville. I know the area! I squealed with delight seeing that.
There was a nice spicy part in the book which I thought was great!! It was just the right amount of spice for a cute rom com.
Since it's the author's first book, it was fun, flirty and so cute. I think she did a great job.
The ending felt like it could be left open for a sequel! I hope that will happen!
Maybe a story for Reginald?? More more drama for Frederick and Cassie? Something dramatic will happen? I want to know like now.
The was definitely breezy and light, but maybe perhaps TOO light? The plot was very thin which made the page length feel long, despite the book clicking in at at just 330ish pages anyway. I was expecting a bit more magical hijinks, more vampire drama, and at the very least a bit more supernatural romance.
As it was, the first 60% of this felt like it crawled by quite slowly, while the drama in the last 80% of the book was resolved much too quickly and with so little fanfare and presence on the page, I actually wondered if my galley was missing chapters. Overall, I think if you want to write some hotel transylvania type fanfiction, that could work, IF it manages to capture the right balance between fun charming magic and bring something refreshing or more adult to the table, this sadly missed the mark there.
This book is cute. Not exactly what I expected in the story line or the ending. But I did enjoy it. I will consider reading more books by Jenna Levine.
'My Roommate is a Vampire' is extremely enjoyable to read. Cassie moves into a new apartment because it was (almost suspiciously) cheap and she's a struggling artist. Soon she gets roped into helping her very-hot-and-kinda-weird roommate blend into 21st-century Chicago. Very fun, occasionally spicy, and I was rooting for both main characters!
I didn't know until I read it that I needed a book like this in my life! This forced proximity, roommates to lovers, vampire romcom is swoony, fun, and laugh out loud funny! I haven't read a debut this good in a long time and I'm very much looking forward to many more books from the author in the near future!
My Roommate is a Vampire is exactly what it seems to be. It’s about a centuries old vampire who gets a human roommate to help bring him into the current century, it’s a cutesy, humorous, romance that I think will be very popular when it comes out. I enjoyed parts of it, but normally do not read these types of books myself. I wanted to give it a shot because I try to get out of my genre comfort zones and try new things, and the title and cover were intriguing to me. While it personally was not my cup of tea, I do believe it will be a lot of other peoples who enjoy books of this sort. I will definitely recommend it to those looking for a light, easy read. I appreciate the addition of Vampires that make is stand out from all the the other similar types of books.
My Roommate is a Vampire is about a young woman named Cassie who is a struggling artist that is getting evicted from her apartment. While apartment hunting, she comes across this ad that seems too good to be true in a really nice Chicago neighborhood so obviously, there has to be a catch.
When she goes to meet up with her potential new roommate, she is introduced to Frederick J. Fitzwilliam who is very much so not your average dude. He tells her that he sleeps throughout the day and is out at night for his job which is weird enough on its own but he also talks like he’s stepped straight out of a Regency romance novel. But Cassie moves in because she can’t pass it up.
Once she moves in, the two mostly communicate by notes which is one of my personal favorite parts of the book. But one day Cassie comes back home to grab something she forgot and she finds out that her new roommate is a vampire and he needs her to help him.
To put it bluntly, this book is not only one of my top reads for 2023 but it’s secured a spot in my list of favorite reads of all time. This book is the romantic comedy of my dreams, with the exact formula of vampires in modern times that I didn’t realize I had been wanting or missing from my life. I spent a huge chunk of this book laughing hysterically and the rest of the time swooning hard over Frederick (and occasionally the two things overlapped and I was in a state of pure bliss). This book got devoured by me in a single day and I am immediately preordering a signed copy.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this book!
I absolutely loved this romcom! I loved reading about Cassie and Frederick falling for each other. I'm such a sucker for a romance involving vampires. Reginald was the perfect comedic relief! This book was so well written and such a cozy read! I hope we get a spin off for Reginald and his accountant, with a little Freddie and Cassie on the side!
This was a charming read with a concept that I really loved. Unfortunately, I just didn't find I had any connection to the characters and didn't find myself invested in their relationship. Still a great summery read that made me smile, but it just didn't connect with me personally.
The premise of this book was so cute, but it took me until halfway through the book to start feeling the chemistry between Cassie and Frederick. I also didn't always like them. Frederick was almost too stiff and old-fashioned at times, like with the bathing suit scene. His personality worked best when humorous situations about his lack of modern knowledge was displayed. (I found the Taylor Swift bit particularly amusing.) At times, Cassie felt a bit airheaded and woe-is-me. But I also really loved her career growth which showed her out-growing some of her self-doubt.
One thing I thought worked really added to the story and worked well for showing the developing relationship, were the notes, diary entries, and text interactions that started each chapter. Despite the slow start, by the end of the book I was rooting for the characters to get their happily-ever-after. Overall, this is a fun book once you get into it.
This was one of the cutest romance I have read in such a long while. It was absolutely adorable, I mean don't even get me started on the cinnamon roll hero that is Frederick. Frederick and Cassie were just so cute and I couldn't get enough of them. It was such a quick read and I enjoyed the bits of vampire lore that we got. I loved the epilogue but wished we had gotten just a bit more of the future with Cassie and Frederick.
Total side not, but I'm really hoping we get a companion novel for Reginald because he was hilarious and I would love more.
Either way, I loved this one and can't wait for everyone to get the chance to read it.
Thank you to the publisher for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
This book is the PERFECT romcom for fantasy lovers!! I didn’t want to put the book down once I passed the 10% mark.
In this book we follow Cassie who is going through a lot in terms of not having a successful job, having no money to pay her rent, and oh yeah, moving in with a vampire for a roommate. And that doesn’t even cover the issues the vampire, Frederick 🫶🏼, has going on!
I enjoyed this book so much. It was fun and quick. I did have some questions and things I felt could have been elaborated on, but overall the book did its job as a romance and I can’t complain!
Definitely pick this one up in August 2023 if it’s on your radar!
This was a delight! It was quite entertaining and I will be recommending it to friends and customers once it is released :)
was surprised to find a vampire book, that, for once, decided to change the archetype of vampires as a whole. In a way that I actually appreciated and enjoyed.
My Roommate is a Vampire by Jenna Levine is an adult fantasy romance novel that follows starving artist, Cassie Greenberg, as she tries to find some place to call home. As eviction lingers a little too closely on the horizon. But her luck changes when she finds an awfully cheap apartment in Chicago, with an overly eager roommate, Frederick J. Fitzwilliam. Who is the basic definition of weird with his bizarre sleeping pattern and accent from a regency novel. But Frederick must come clean when Cassie finds liters of blood in the refrigerator. And things just spiral past complicated.
What I really liked about this book, was how relatable Cassie was. Especially with her bajillion jobs just to make ends meet. (Though I am a bit partial over the fact that she is also a librarian). As well as how Levine explored new vampire powers never seen before in other similar titles. (Take that Twilight's sparkly Edward Cullen). But what I especially loved was how Frederick was portrayed with the classic stick of not knowing 21st century lingo and slang. Ie. What is tiktok, wifi, Nordstrom rack?
Though I could have easily done without all the romance scenes. As it had no real point to the plot. I also wish that we got a little more about character's backstories, especially that of Frederick's mother.
But despite it all, I'm still wondering.
What happened to Sam?
