-m/f vampire romance
-rooomance
-age gap
-my kumquats bring all the girls to the yard
-kissing for the sake of science
-sloow burn
-epistolary elements
-the stoic one and the chaos one
This book was just fun and put the COM in the ROM. I cackled so much. Just imagine a vampire rip van winkle style waking up a 100 years later and just trying to figure out modern life so of course he decides to get a roommate to teach him about things like tie too and how to order a coffee. Because you need a credit card now and not a gold dabloon.
Cassie was chaotic in the best way, still figuring out her life and her art. Her friends seem put together and she wants the same but refuses to let them help her too much, just a fierce independence streak. So she moves into the really cheap apartment with the very strange man. And gosh Frederick, so old fashioned stoic and just gone on Cassie from the beginning despite his denial. These two danced around each other so sweetly as they used their modernity lessons to get to know each other, become friends and ultimately fall in love with each other.
I adored the sweet notes, all of the roommance stapes (when they crashed into each other when she was only wearing ga towel just more of that please), I very much enjoyed this one and can't wait to see what Jenna writes next.
Steam: 3
Hilarious. I loved the dichotomy between the characters - posture, language, etc. - everything you'd expect from a vampire that had been asleep a century! I wish it had been a bit longer, but the story was well rounded and came to a conclusion without feeling rushed. I can see this becoming a series and really enjoyed it!
$200 a month for a lake-view apartment in Chicago? Cassie can't believe this is a legit offer, but since funds are tight, she decides to check it out. The apartment owner turns out to be Frederick J. Fitzwilliam, a thoroughly buttoned-up and old-fashioned man -- who also happens to be utterly gorgeous and irresistible. Is it a red flag that his decor seems to be kind of Victorian Goth? Or that there are two rooms Cassie must never enter? Or that Frederick must never be disturbed during the day? Or is it just that Frederick is... a vampire?
This sweet and funny romance features the most unusual vampire I've ever read about: a total cinnamon roll. Frederick has completely missed the past 100 years (long story) and needs Cassie's help getting up to speed on modern society, but he's so adorably awkward and earnest -- and none too impressed with modern things like fancifully-named coffee drinks, the tendency to post photos of food on Instagram, and 1980s TV shows about talking cars (like THAT's believable!) -- that Cassie can't help but fall for him a little more every day. Cassie herself is a familiar and relatable figure, trying to make ends meet on two part-time jobs while keeping up with making art and dreaming of making it somehow as an artist.
The story is fast-paced and a little over the top, but in the best possible way. Will Frederick's friend Reggie get his story next? Four solid stars.
Thank you, Berkley Romance and NetGalley, for providing an eARC of this book. Opinions expressed here are solely my own.
This vampire romcom was such a charming read! A centuries old vampire living with an artistic imaginative human made for a fantastic book!
Cassie is about to be evicted (again) and is desperate to find a new apartment within her budget. And she finds one that’s almost too good to be true: it’s in a great area, lots of natural light and it’s only $200 a month!! Her new roommate is slightly eccentric, but we all have quirks, right? Frederick, a vampire, is anxious about having a human roommate and is attempting to make a decidedly ~normal~ impression. He is very out of touch with modern society and it shows. When his secret gets out to Cassie one evening things change quickly between them and she learns he has need of her human expertise.
So this book was hilarious! Frederick and Cassie were such charming characters. The relative slow burn was so well written and the pair have amazing chemistry. I loved reading all the stolen moments they had together and seeing them almost pine. Frederick is so gentlemanly and sweet and so out of his element. His attempts to be normal and to learn about modern culture and society were fun to read. I also appreciated how realistic it was. His getting frustrated at times while being told about Instagram or shopping does make sense, and I appreciated the realism.
Cassie is a wonderful leading character and I appreciated the single narrative for this book. After reading so many books lately with dual or more POVs I was really happy to have a book with one single POV. And Cassie is so vibrant and fun! She’s very tenacious and even when she’s feeling down she tends to bounce back quickly. I loved reading about her art and whatnot means to her. It was lovely seeing how passionate she is!
The plot is so good for this book! And the writing is easy to read and flows well. I flew through this book in less than 24 hours and I would definitely read it again!
Honestly, vampire romcoms are almost always a hit with me and this book is just a solid, funny, exciting addition to that sub genre. The author is a welcome bit of fresh blood to the romcom world! I’ll say it again: this book definitely doesn’t suck. (That should do it for the requisite vampire jokes lol).
Thanks very much to NetGalley and Berkley Romance for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review!
My Roommate is a Vampire is such a cute, quirky read! I’ve been dying to get my hands on this book for a while now and it did NOT disappoint!!! The story is told almost completely from Cassie’s POV, but we do get to see some of Fredrick’s thoughts here and there through letters and his google search history.
The book gave me major ‘Kate and Leopold’ vibes (one of my fav movies), with Fredrick being thrown in a whole new century and being completely out of his element. I loved the letters that him and Cassie wrote to each other and seeing the closing sign-off change as the relationship/feelings grow! (I’m a sucker for some good old fashioned love letters) I’m also a sucker for a good spicy rom-com and let me just say Jenna has BLESSED US! There are about 1.5 spicy scenes and even though the number is low the spice is not! It was sexy and emotional….and maybe had a lil blood involved👀👀👀 I mean it is a vampire book!
Overall this has been one of favorite reads this year! I only wish I could be so lucky to have a hot, sexy vampire roommate who let me pay $200 in rent😪
Guys my face hurts from smiling so big the entire time I was reading this!!!
We first meet Cassie on the search for an apartment, when her friend stumbles across an ad for the perfect brownstone for only $200 a month, it seems too good to be true. Enter Frederick J. Fitzwilliam, owner of said brownstone- and just so happens to be a 300 year old vampire. He's also the newest addition on my shelf of Book Boyfriends.
This book is perfect in every! way! I’m a little biased- I’ve been a fan of Jenna’s writing for a long time. But that doesn’t change the fact that this is the sweetest, coziest book I’ve read this year!
Cassie is so genuine and creative and interesting, and Frederick is so gentle and kind and such a freaking sweetheart. The chemistry between them is electric and absolutely perfect. Also, all the hilarious Buffy and Twilight references had me squealing! I already can’t wait to reread this book!!!
My Roommate is a Vampire is out this August, preorder it book babes!!!
Thank you so much to Berkley Romance and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
this is a super cute, and funny slow burn romance. never have i read any vampire story with a similar plot.
I loved this!!!
This is a fast paced, quirky, and adorable rom com about an artist and a centuries old vampire. It's cute, and that was exactly what I wanted out of it. I easily binged this in a couple hours and absolutely loved the sticky note communication between the two main characters.
It did give slight Flat Share vibes so if you loved that book you might also enjoy this one too!
As a vampire girlie I fully approve.
A fun, quirky romp through Chicagoland...with a vampire in tow. Cassie Greenberg is struggling-she's being evicted from her (admittedly gross) apartment, she hasn't found an audience for her somewhat avant-garde art, and she's currently cobbling together income from an assortment. of jobs- namely as a barista at a local coffeehouse, and a part-time gig in the children's library. The ad for a roommate in swanky Lincoln Park, at a bargain basement price of $200/month seems too good to be true, but at this point Cassie is left little choice: it's either this place or crashing on her newlywed BFF's couch for the foreseeable future. After seeing the (gorgeous) apartment and meeting the odd-but-not-really-creepy guy she'll be renting from, Cassie decides the apartment is the lesser of two evils and moves in with the strangely formal Frederick.
It's nice to see a midwestern take on the vampire genre (Chicago in the winter is a great place to avoid the sun, haha), but there's not a lot of originality in the story or plot. It was still an enjoyable read and one I would happily recommend for fans of the genre.
This was over the top and I loved every minute of it!
This was a ridiculously sweet romance between a young artist, Cassie and a centuries old vampire, Frederick set against the backdrop of a gorgeous apartment they are sharing. I love that the author isn’t taking anything too seriously. She had fun with this one and it really shows.
The interactions Cassie and Frederick have throughout the book were so funny and wholesome. I enjoyed how the vampire details and idiosyncrasies were handled.
This is a book that I recommend if you’re wanting a good, sweet romance that you can really fly through.
I so wanted to love this. I love a roomate-leaves-notes trope but not this one. Everything in this book was soooo fast. *SPOILERS AHEAD* She moves in and Reginald almost immediately scares her by outing Frederick as a vampire in a really odd and very dramatic way. When she forgives Frederick and they fall into the instalove trope which I kinda hate. Which is a bummer, because the two moments we got at home with them were cute, but that was it. THEN he's kidnapped and I thought "oh! okay a conflict that will take some time to resolve" and did it? No. She makes one thinnly veiled threat against centuries old vampires and they give in within a few minutes... literally on the same page of the book. and I thought "oh! Well surely this is a trap to create further conflict" and was it? No. She shows up at their mansion and they all but shove Frederick out of the door and tell them to go home. Which they do and then the book is over.
This was a cute story. When I first thought we were staying in normal vampire tropes, it would take turns I wasn’t expecting in such a funny way. Frederick was so quirky and adorable, I loved reading all of the precious things he thought and said. The climax being centered around tiktok killed me. I enjoyed how self aware the book was of its humor and simplicity. I was waiting for a complex plot point for the climax of the story and was given such a funny way of solving the main issue that happens, I found myself chuckling. Adorable read.
If you’re looking for a quick and easy read with a bit of spice and some laughs, this book is for you. ‘My Roommate Is a Vampire’ approaches Vampire Romance in a unique way. How do you adjust to modern life after being asleep for the last century? You get a millennial roommate.
While the characters were fun and charming, at times I felt their new relationship lacked depth. You learn very little about the male leads life before this story and while the female lead seems to struggle with her own past, and feelings of inadequacy it’s hardly addressed besides a few comments she mostly makes to herself. Again, this was mostly just a fun read. With my minor critiques aside, if Levine chose to make a spinoff with perhaps Reginald, I’d read it.
I really enjoyed this one. It’s a quick, breezy read that has the most cluelessly adorable male lead, who I really want more of. Is it too much to hope that it becomes a series?
If you are tired of vampires in romance books, trust me when I say it’s different. It’s absolutely worth it.
Detailed review to come.
My Roommate Is a Vampire is a new breed, hybrid rom-com and paranormal romance, and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Between the cast of characters and the humor that Levine infused into both the narrative and the dialogue, this is a standout vampire romance.
This story definitely read differently than your normal vampire romance. Levine clearly wrote this story more as a rom-com that just happens to feature a vampire, rather than a paranormal romance that has a lot of laughs. It was refreshing to read a vampire romance that strayed so far from the standard, formulaic paranormal romance plot.
Due to their age gap, Cassie and Frederick had quite the list of obstacles to overcome, but Levine made all these differences on the lighthearted side. I never once thought that these two wouldn't end up together, but I still enjoyed every bit of their journey.
Of course, Levine had to incorporate some conflict into the story, but I loved that it seemed more low-key than other vampire drama. Even at its worst, the tension was hardly physical. I thought Levine crafted a resolution that was quick and painless, but also managed to showcase both Cassie and Frederick to their full potential.
The whole premise of this romance was fun and quirky, and I liked that we got all that in a vampire romance. I enjoyed Levine's writing style, and loved both the characters and their plot. Levine gave us fun, campy, and sexy, and My Roommate Is a Vampire is definitely a unique vampire romance.
The cover is divine - whoever did the artwork is my new favorite artist! This story had me wondering if this roommate agreement will work out and when/if Cassie will figure out he's a vampire. I really liked this book and look forward to more from Levine!
This was a quick and easy read. There was nothing too original about it, quirky girl meets refined old school boy, though Reginald did make me laugh.
Well this was loads of fun! My vampire-loving heart really enjoyed this fun adventure that’s full of laughs and romance. This book absolutely exceeded my expectations. Cassie and Frederick’s moments together were *chef’s kiss* and their chemistry jumped off from the page. All in all, super well written, loads of fun, and a real page turner!
This is an absolutely laugh-out-loud, entertaining, and eccentric paranormal romance between a quirky, selfless, artsy heroine and a cinnamon bun immortal with dreamy Mr. Darcy vibes.
"How to be a Roommate with a Vampire and Teach Him How to Adapt in the Modern World" sounds like a hilarious and creative sitcom concept that I would happily binge-watch for seasons.
The main concept can be defined as "What We Do in the Shadows" meets "Flatshare."
Both of the main characters are goofy, sweet, and likable. Their palpable chemistry, handwritten notes they share, their irresistible attraction, and the awkward situations they put themselves into are absolutely swoon-worthy.
The main plot revolves around aspiring artist Cassie Greenberg and Frederick Fitzwilliam, an eccentric landlord at the age of 35, who looks like he was transported from the regency era by his looks, manners, and way of talking.
Unfortunately, Cassie is about to get evicted from her flat and is reconsidering her living arrangements after reading a Craigslist post providing a spare room with an unbelievably affordable price located in a good part of the city. As you can guess, the apartment belongs to Frederick, who doesn't get much return for his post. Only Cassie applies for the apartment, ignoring red flags because beggars can't be choosers. At least the young Colin Firth in regency era suits styled man, who also has adorable six-packs, doesn't give her any Dexter meets Dahmer vibes! But she has no idea that the adorable man has Edward Cullen meets Damon Salvatore vibes, indeed.
Cassie can barely resist her attraction to her roommate/landlord, feeling extra pleased by his formal but also genuine old-style letters and his honestly encouraging compliments to her art. But when she learns the truth about why he has unconventional sleeping habits and working schedule, his lack of appetite, and his unusual old-school manners, the first thing she does is run away without looking back!
But what if she can give him a chance and help him adapt to the modern world, even though she cannot hold her feelings for him at risk of her own life?
I think this was an absolutely enjoyable, fresh, and lighthearted debut. I sense from the open ending that more sequels may come out!
Reginald is an absolutely delightful and hilarious supporting character. The text exchanges between him and Frederick were the highlight of my day! I am looking forward to reading more works by the author in the near future.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for sharing this very entertaining book's digital reviewer copy with me in exchange for my honest thoughts.
A bloody fun twist on the rom coms. A recommended purchase for collections where the genre is popular.
