Emmeline Hopkins-Keller is in paradise, sharing a luxurious holiday on a tropical island with her husband Jeffrey and his family. But it's hard to enjoy it when she knows her marriage is in deep trouble. One fateful night, a cataclysmic argument between Emeline and Jeffrey sends him fleeing into the deep, dark forest. A day later he is still missing, leaving everyone shocked and bewitched. The, a miracle, Jeffrey turns up unharmed and wants to reconcile. But something is horribly wrong. He looks and sounds like Jeffrey, but Emmeline is 100% sure he's not the man she married. Even if everyone in the family is welcoming this stranger with open arms.

There's one thing we find out quite quickly reading this book, Emmeline isn't a very nice character. In fact, she's despicable. The only character I did like is Jeffrey. This is quite a dark read. I do believe the story could have been a lot shorter than it was, there was an awful lot of repetition. I wasn't keen on the authors style in writing this book either. I nearly gave up on this book a couple of times, but I'm glad I didn't as the last couple of chapters were well worth the wait.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #InkunatorBooks and the author #ColeBoxter for my ARC of #TheDoppelganger in exchange for an honest review.

Quite an interesting idea but poorly executed. The characters and dialogue are very simplistic. The reader is walked through the attempted twists in such a way as to feel completely they have been completely mansplained to. I wanted to like this book but struggled to finish it.

Finished ✔️ The Doppelgänger by Cole Baxter!

Most dry, repetitive book I’ve ever read
There is a problem when you can skim read, skip paragraphs, & skip chapters AND still know what’s going in the storyline because they’re still discussing the same repetitive issues a few chapters earlier! 🤦🏻‍♀️
Absolutely no plot at all.
A book any reader could hold a full fledge conversation with others while in the mist of reading and still knowing what’s going on.
I don’t think you could loose your post in this book when someone is talking to you.
I’ll let others judge whether or not they want to read it. 😉

It's very repetitive. Same responses by characters alot. No one was allowed to keep their phones, then when asked by head of security if Jeffrey had his phone Emmeline wasn't sure. Just didn't make sense.

So much potential and felt let down early on to the point I couldn't finish the book.
Not a fan.

Wow, this was honestly my very first book by this author and I have to say that I’m definitely not disappointed! It kept me on the edge of my seat!

The plot is so unique and best-seller material so to me the book had so much potential but why??!!! Why to write a book from the perspective of an antagonist that is so despicable and disgusting right from the first page and take us through every single thought that crossed her empty, self-centered brain??!!!. There was so much room here to work with. Write from the husband's perspective, write from the third point of view without having to hear her stupid thoughts, write from her deceptive perspective with a big reveal in the end. Give us something to like about her... make us doubt whether she is a good guy, a bad guy, or a good guy.

Why not to build on her stress and anxiety of wondering where her husband is and whether she is going crazy instead of having a confrontation right away. Give us some memory loss or potential prosopagnosia red-herrings. Give us something to doubt about. No one wants to read repetitive dialogues of "you are not my husband", "yes, I am". You want a big tension growing and then a release towards the end, like a song, like music, like anything in life.

The references to the family being ultra-rich were unnecessary. Does the author want to disconnect the book from the audience completely? A more realistic set up of a family going on a holiday would have been more believable and connect with the readers better.

If you want to read the whole book like a joke about a cold bitch who gets what she deserves, then you might enjoy it.

I tried this after not getting on with a previous book by this author and unfortunately this is a similar problem. The best part of this book is the last chapter but unfortunately it ends there.

Emmeline Hopins-Keller is on a luxurious holiday in paradise with her husband Jeffrey and his family, she knows her marriage is in trouble,so is finding it hard to relax.
After a massive argument between the two of them Jeffrey runs off into the dark forest, everyone is shocked when he is still missing a day later but then he returns and wants to make up with Emmeline but she's 100% sure that the man standing in front of her isn't her husband yes he looks and sounds like him and the rest of the family have welcomed him with opened arms but she's not convinced.Who is he and how has he convinced everyone else? She beings to doubt herself and when she does reveal the truth her life is changed forever.
A good read from Cole Baxter I did find it abit to long, I think things could have been wrapped up sooner but it did have me guessing throughout, but the ending was well worth the wait,
Thanks to Netgalley and Inkubator Books for the ARC.

A narcissistic main character you'll love to hate. And one you shouldn't trust. This book kept me interested and was a total explosion in the end. My favorite novel of Baxter's.

Thank you NetGalley, Inkubator Books, and Cole Baxter for allowing me to read an advanced copy of The Doppelganger.

Up until the last two chapters I wanted to give this book a one star review. The main character, Emmeline, was infuriating and insufferable throughout the entire story. To put it bluntly, she was a narcissistic bitch! She was a manipulative bully and her thought process made for a very taxing and painful reading.

The conclusion made me change my mind about the book and that is why I am giving it four stars. I do not want to give away any spoliers, but the ending was definitely satisfying and worth the previous torture.

Emmeline travels to a tropical island with her husband Jeffrey and his rich family. She sees it as an opportunity to fix their broken marriage, but after a particularly severe argument Jeffrey disappears off into the woods and doesn't come back. Emmeline is shocked when Jeffrey then turns up safe, but something isn't right about him... Emmeline is convinced it isn't her husband, and can't understand why his family can't see that...

A creepy and thrilling story that keeps you guessing. A unique book, a good read!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the book in return for my honest feedback.

Quite a long book that was drawn out in some areas however still a great enjoyable read with a major twist at the end.

I love Cole baxter so went into this expecting great things but this one left me on the fence a little bit. I loved the initial dilemma, the whole psychological torture element going on, not knowing what on earth was happening and not knowing if it was the main character, her husband, the family or something of the other world. It wad so eerie and creepy and I was certainly hooked and kept entertained but..... there are just a lot of loose ends in this one for me so I've still a lot of questions and don't really see that it would have been possible. And I know, it's a fiction, they rarely would ever play out the way they go in books but still...... I can't even ask the main question without giving away the ending so I will just have to wait until release day and see everyone else's theories lol.

Anyways, that didn't give much of a review did it? OK so it's quite slow but that helps build the tension and the whole creeper out vibe. It also worked well to really drive home that the main character is also trapped in this neverending loop and that feeling of needing some kind of conclusion or freedom from the trap really comes through.

I can't say j liked the main character. Which is probably to be expected because she's horrid! The family were also really well written and I actually was rooting for them more than the main character lol. The doppelganger was very unnerving and it's certainly an unsettling idea which I loved.

There were twists and turns and you do make assumptions that would be completely inaccurate because it is one of those annoying things where the end is something you could never have forseen. Think pretty little lairs and A for any other millennials reading lol. But.... that just means you get a majorly shocking reveal and also get to spend the book thinking it's this completely different story which I kind of liked. The story wouldn't have seemed so unsettling had my brain not been taking me down the route that it was led down.

This is all sounding incredibly cryptic so I'll just give up! Uf you pike domestic noirs, if you've read Cole baxter before, you'll know what you're getting yourself into and it's another quick, easy read that may confuse but won't disappoint
